  2 H3290 And when Jacob H7200 [H8804] saw them, H559 [H8799] he said, H430 This is God's H4264 host: H7121 [H8799] and he called H8034 the name H4725 of that place H4266 Mahanaim.
3 H3290 And Jacob H7971 [H8799] sent H4397 messengers H6440 before him H6215 to Esau H251 his brother H776 to the land H8165 of Seir, H7704 the country H123 of Edom.
  4 H6680 [H8762] And he commanded H559 [H8800] them, saying, H559 [H8799] Thus shall ye speak H113 to my lord H6215 Esau; H5650 Thy servant H3290 Jacob H559 [H8804] saith H1481 [H8804] thus, I have sojourned H3837 with Laban, H309 [H8799] and stayed there till now:
  5 H7794 And I have oxen, H2543 and donkeys, H6629 flocks, H5650 and male H8198 and female servants: H7971 [H8799] and I have sent H5046 [H8687] to tell H113 my lord, H4672 [H8800] that I may find H2580 grace H5869 in thy sight.
6 H4397 And the messengers H7725 [H8799] returned H3290 to Jacob, H559 [H8800] saying, H935 [H8804] We came H251 to thy brother H6215 Esau, H1980 [H8802] and also he is coming H7125 [H8800] to meet thee, H3967 and four hundred H376 men with him.
  7 H3290 Then Jacob H3966 was greatly H3372 [H8799] afraid H3334 [H8799] and distressed: H2673 [H8799] and he divided H5971 the people H6629 that were with him, and the flocks, H1241 and herds, H1581 and camels, H8147 into two H4264 bands;
8 H559 [H8799] And said, H6215 If Esau H935 [H8799] shall come H259 to the one H4264 company, H5221 [H8689] and smite it, H4264 then the other company H7604 [H8737] which is left H6413 shall escape.
9 H3290 And Jacob H559 [H8799] said, H430 O God H1 of my father H85 Abraham, H430 and God H1 of my father H3327 Isaac, H3068 the LORD H559 [H8802] who saidst H7725 [H8798] to me, Return H776 to thy land, H4138 and to thy kindred, H3190 [H8686] and I will deal well with thee:
10 H6994 [H8804] I am not worthy of the least H2617 of all the mercies, H571 and of all the truth, H6213 [H8804] which thou hast shown H5650 to thy servant; H4731 for with my staff H5674 [H8804] I passed over H3383 this Jordan; H8147 and now I am become two H4264 bands.
11 H5337 [H8685] Deliver me, H3027 I pray thee, from the hand H251 of my brother, H3027 from the hand H6215 of Esau: H3373 for I fear H935 [H8799] him, lest he will come H5221 [H8689] and smite me, H517 and the mother H5921 with H1121 the children.
12 H559 [H8804] And thou saidst, H3190 [H8687] I will surely H3190 [H8686] do thee good, H7760 [H8804] and make H2233 thy seed H2344 as the sand H3220 of the sea, H5608 [H8735] which cannot be numbered H7230 for multitude.
  13 H3885 [H8799] And he lodged H3915 there that same night; H3947 [H8799] and took H935 [H8802] of that which came H3027 to his hand H4503 a present H6215 for Esau H251 his brother;
14 H3967 Two hundred H5795 female goats, H6242 and twenty H8495 male goats, H3967 two hundred H7353 ewes, H6242 and twenty H352 rams,
  15 H7970 Thirty H3243 [H8688] milk H1581 camels H1121 with their colts, H705 forty H6510 cows, H6235 and ten H6499 bulls, H6242 twenty H860 female donkeys, H6235 and ten H5895 foals.
16 H5414 [H8799] And he delivered H3027 them into the hand H5650 of his servants, H5739 every drove H559 [H8799] by themselves; and said H5650 to his servants, H5674 [H8798] Pass over H6440 before me, H7760 [H8799] and put H7305 a space H996 between H5739 drove H996 and H5739 drove.
17 H6680 [H8762] And he commanded H7223 the foremost, H559 [H8800] saying, H6215 When Esau H251 my brother H6298 [H8799] meeteth thee, H7592 [H8804] and asketh thee, H559 [H8800] saying, H3212 [H8799] Whose art thou? and where goest H6440 thou? and whose are these before thee?
18 H559 [H8804] Then thou shalt say, H5650 They are thy servant H3290 Jacob's; H4503 it is a present H7971 [H8803] sent H113 to my lord H6215 Esau: H310 and, behold, also he is behind us.
19 H1571 And so H6680 [H8762] he commanded H8145 the second, H7992 and the third, H1980 H310 [H8802] and all that followed H5739 the droves, H559 [H8800] saying, H1697 In this manner H1696 [H8762] shall ye speak H6215 to Esau, H4672 [H8800] when ye find him.
  20 H559 [H8804] And say ye H1571 moreover, H5650 Behold, thy servant H3290 Jacob H310 is behind us. H559 [H8804] For he said, H3722 [H8762] I will appease H6440 him H4503 with the present H1980 [H8802] that goeth H6440 before me, H310 and afterward H7200 [H8799] I will see H6440 his face; H5375 [H8799] perhaps he will accept H6440 of me.
21 H4503 So the present H5674 [H8799] went over H6440 before him: H3885 [H8804] and he himself lodged H3915 that night H4264 in the company.
  22 H6965 [H8799] And he arose H3915 that night, H3947 [H8799] and took H8147 his two H802 wives, H8147 and his two H8198 female servants, H6240 H259 and his eleven H3206 sons, H5674 [H8799] and passed over H4569 the ford H2999 Jabbok.
23 H3947 [H8799] And he took them, H5674 [H8686] and sent them over H5158 the brook, H5674 [H8686] and sent over that which he had.
24 H3290 And Jacob H3498 [H8735] was left H79 [H8735] alone; and there wrestled H376 a man H5927 [H8800] with him until the breaking H7837 of the day.
25 H7200 [H8799] And when he saw H3201 [H8804] that he prevailed H5060 [H8799] not against him, he touched H3409 the hollow of his thigh; H3709 and the hollow H3290 of Jacob's H3409 thigh H3363 [H8799] was out of joint, H79 [H8736] as he wrestled with him.
  26 H559 [H8799] And he said, H7971 [H8761] Let me go, H7837 for the day H5927 [H8804] breaketh. H559 [H8799] And he said, H7971 [H8762] I will not let thee go, H518 except H1288 [H8765] thou bless me.
27 H559 [H8799] And he said H8034 to him, What is thy name? H559 [H8799] And he said, H3290 Jacob.
28 H559 [H8799] And he said, H8034 Thy name H559 [H8735] shall be called H3290 no more Jacob, H3478 but Israel: H8280 [H8804] for as a prince hast thou power H430 with God H582 and with men, H3201 [H8799] and hast prevailed.
29 H3290 And Jacob H7592 [H8799] asked H559 [H8799] him, and said, H5046 [H8685] Tell H8034 me, I pray thee, thy name. H559 [H8799] And he said, H2088 why is it H7592 [H8799] that thou dost ask H8034 after my name? H1288 [H8762] And he blessed him there.
  30 H3290 And Jacob H7121 [H8799] called H8034 the name H4725 of the place H6439 Peniel: H7200 [H8804] for I have seen H430 God H6440 face H6440 to face, H5315 and my life H5337 [H8735] is preserved.
31 H5674 [H8804] And as he passed over H6439 Penuel H8121 the sun H2224 [H8799] rose H6760 [H8802] upon him, and he limped H3409 upon his thigh.
32 H1121 Therefore the children H3478 of Israel H398 [H8799] eat H1517 not of the sinew H5384 which shrank, H3709 which is upon the hollow H3409 of the thigh, H3117 to this day: H5060 [H8804] because he touched H3709 the hollow H3290 of Jacob's H3409 thigh H1517 in the sinew H5384 that shrank.

Respondit: Jacob. 28 At ille: Nequaquam, inquit, Jacob appellabitur nomen tuum, sed Israël: quoniam si contra Deum fortis fuisti, quanto magis contra homines prævalebis? 29 Interrogavit eum Jacob: Dic mihi, quo appellaris nomine?
Wycliffe(i) 1 Forsothe Jacob wente forth in the weie in which he began, and the aungels of the Lord metten him. 2 And whanne he hadde seyn hem, he seide, These ben the castels of God; and he clepide the name of that place Manaym, that is, castels. 3 Sotheli Jacob sente bifore him also messangeris to Esau, his brother, in to the lond of Seir, in the cuntrey of Edom; 4 and comaundide to hem, and seide, Thus speke ye to my lord Esau, Thi brothir Jacob seith these thingis, Y was a pilgrym at Laban, `and Y was `til in to present dai; 5 Y haue oxun, and assis, and scheep, and seruauntis, and hand maydis, and Y sende now a message to my lord, that Y fynde grace in thi siyt. 6 And the messageris turneden ayen to Jacob, and seiden, We camen to Esau, thi brother, and lo! he hastith in to thi comyng, with foure hundrid men. 7 Jacob dredde greetli, and he was aferd, and departide the puple that was with hym, and he departide the flockis, and scheep, and oxun, and camels, in to twei cumpenyes; 8 and seide, If Esau schal come to o cumpeny, and schal smyte it, the tothir cumpeny which is residue schal be saued. 9 And Jacob seide, A! God of my fadir Abraham, and God of my fadir Isaac, A! Lord, that seidist to me, Turne thou ayen in to thi lond, and in to the place of thi birthe, and Y schal do wel to thee, 10 Y am lesse than alle thi merciful doyngis, and than thi treuthe which thou hast fillid to thi seruaunt; with my staf Y passide this Jordan, and now Y go ayen with twei cumpanyes; 11 delyuere thou me fro the hond of my brothir Esau, for Y drede him greetli, lest he come and sle the modris with the sones. 12 Thou spakist that thou schuldist do wel to me, and shuldist alarge my seed as the grauel of the see, that mai not be noumbrid for mychilnesse. 13 And whanne Jacob hadde slept there in that nyyt, he departide of tho thingis whiche he hadde yiftis to Esau, his brothir, 14 two hundrid geet, and twenti buckis of geet, two hundrid scheep, and twenti rammys, 15 camels fulle with her foolis thretti, fourti kyen, and twenti boolis, twenti sche assis, and ten foolis of hem. 16 And he sente bi the hondis of his seruauntis alle flockis bi hem silf; and he seide to hise children, Go ye bifore me, and a space be betwixe flok and flok. 17 And he comaundide to the formere, and seide, If thou schalt mete my brothir Esau, and he schal axe thee, whos man thou art, ether whidir thou goist, ether whos ben these thingis whiche thou suest, 18 thou schalt answere, Of thi seruaunt Jacob, he hath sent yiftis to his lord Esau, and he cometh aftir vs. 19 In lijk maner, he yaf comaundementis to the secounde, and to the thridde, and to alle that sueden flockis; and seide, Speke ye bi the same wordis to Esau, 20 whanne ye fynden hym, and ye schulen adde, Also Jacob hym silf thi seruaunt sueth oure weie. For Jacob seide, Y schal plese Esau with yiftis that goon bifore, and aftirward Y schal se hym; in hap he schal be mercyful to me. 21 And so the yiftis yeden bifore hym; sotheli he dwellide in that nyyt in the tentis. 22 And whanne Jacob hadde arise auysseli, he took hise twei wyues, and so many seruauntessis with enleuen sones, and passide the forthe of Jaboth. 23 And whanne alle thingis that perteyneden to hym weren led ouer, he dwellide aloone, and, lo! 24 a man wrastlide with him til to the morwetid. 25 And whanne the man seiy that he miyte not ouercome Jacob, he touchide the senewe of Jacobis hipe, and it driede anoon. 26 And he seide to Jacob, Leeue thou me, for the morewtid stieth now. Jacob answeride, Y schal not leeue thee, no but thou blesse me. 27 Therfore he seide, What name is to thee? He answeride, Jacob. 28 And the man seide, Thi name schal no more be clepid Jacob, but Israel; for if thou were strong ayens God, hou miche more schalt thou haue power ayens men. 29 Jacob axide him, Seie thou to me bi what name thou art clepid? He answerde, Whi axist thou my name, whiche is wondirful? And he blesside Jacob in the same place. 30 And Jacob clepide the name of that place Fanuel, and seide, Y siy the Lord face to face, and my lijf is maad saaf. 31 And anoon the sunne roos to hym, aftir that he passide Fanuel; forsothe he haltide in the foot. 32 For which cause the sones of Israel eten not `til in to present day the senewe, that driede in the hipe of Jacob; for the man touchide the senewe of Jacobs hipe, and it driede.
Tyndale(i) 1 But Iacob went forth on his iourney. And the angells of God came and mett him. 2 And when Iacob sawe them he sayde: this is godes hoost: and called the name of that same place Mahanaim. 3 Iacob sente meessengers before him to Esau his brother vnto the lande of Seir and the felde of Edom. 4 And he comaunded them saynge: se that ye speake after this maner to my lorde Esau: thy seruaunte Iacob sayth thus. I haue sogerned ad bene a straunger with Laban vnto this tyme: 5 and haue gotten oxen asses and shepe menservauntes and wemanseruauntes and haue sent to shewe it mi lorde that I may fynde grace in thy syghte. 6 And the messengers came agayne to Iacob sainge: we came vnto thi brother Esau and he cometh ageynst the and .iiij. hundred men with hi. 7 Than was Iacob greatlye afrayde and wist not which waye to turne him selfe and devyded the people that was with him and the shepe oxen and camels in to .ij. companies 8 and sayde: Yf Esau come to the one parte and smyte it the other may saue it selfe. 9 And Iacob sayde: O god of my father Abraham and God of my father Isaac: LORde which saydest vnto me returne vnto thy cuntre and to thy kynrede and I will deall wel with the. 10 I am not worthy of the leaste of all the mercyes and treuth which thou hast shewed vnto thy seruaunte. For with my staf came I over this Iordane and now haue Igoten .ij. droves 11 Delyver me from the handes of my brother Esau for I feare him: lest he will come and smyte the mother with the childeru. 12 Thou saydest that thou woldest surely do me good and woldest make mi seed as the sonde of the see which can not be nombred for multitude. 13 And he taried there that same nyghte and toke of that which came to hande a preasent vnto Esau his brother: 14 ij hundred she gootes ad xx he gootes: ij hundred shepe and xx rammes: 15 thyrtye mylch camels with their coltes: xl kyne ad x bulles: xx she asses ad foles 16 and delyuered them vnto his seruauntes euery drooue by them selues ad sayde vnto them: goo forth before me and put a space betwyxte euery drooue. 17 And he comaunded the formest sayngeWhe Esau my brother meteth the ad axeth the saynge: whose seruaute art thou and whither goost thou and whose ar these that goo before ye: 18 thou shalt say they be thy seruaunte Iacobs and are a present sent vnto my lorde Esau and beholde he him selfe cometh after vs. 19 And so comaunded he the seconde ad euen so the thirde and lykewyse all that folowed the drooues sainge of this maner se that ye speake vnto Esau whe ye mete him 20 ad saye more ouer. Beholde thy seruaunte Iacob cometh after vs for he sayde. I will pease his wrath with the present yt goth before me and afterward I will see him myself so peradventure he will receaue me to grace. 21 So went the preset before him ad he taried all that nyghte in the tente 22 ad rose vp the same nyghte ad toke his .ij. wyves and his .ij. maydens and his .xi. sonnes and went ouer the foorde Iabok. 23 And he toke them ad sent the ouer the ryuer ad sent ouer that he had 24 ad taried behinde him selfe alone. And there wrastled a man with him vnto the breakynge of the daye. 25 And when he sawe that he coude not prevayle agaynst him he smote hi vnder the thye and the senowe of Iacobs thy shranke as he wrastled with him. 26 And he sayde: let me goo for the daye breaketh. And he sayde: I will not lett the goo excepte thou blesse me. 27 And he sayde vnto him: what is thy name? He answered: Iacob. 28 And he sayde: thou shalt be called Iacob nomore but Israell. For thou hast wrastled with God and with men ad hast preuayled. 29 And Iacob asked him sainge tell me thi name. And he sayde wherfore dost thou aske after my name? and he blessed him there. 30 And Iacob called the name of the place Peniel for I haue sene God face to face and yet is my lyfe reserved. 31 And as he went ouer Peniel the sonne rose vpon him and he halted vpon his thye: 32 wherfore the childern of Israell eate not of the senow that shrancke vnder the thye vnto this daye: because that he smote Iacob vnder the thye in the senow that shroncke.
Coverdale(i) 1 As for Iacob, he wente on his iourney, & the angels of God met him. 2 And whan he sawe them, he sayde: It is Gods hoost, & called the same place Mahanaim. 3 Iacob sent messaungers before him to his brother Esau in to the lande of Seir, of the felde of Edom, 4 & commaunded the, & sayde: Saye thus vnto my lorde Esau: Thy seruaunt Iacob sendeth ye this worde: I haue bene out wt Laban, & haue bene hither to amonge straungers, 5 & haue oxen & Asses, shepe, seruauntes & maydes, & haue sent forth to shewe it the my lorde, yt I might fynde fauoure in thy sight. 6 The messaungers came agayne vnto Iacob, and sayde: We came vnto thy brother Esau, & he commeth forth also agaynst the with foure hundreth men. 7 Then was Iacob sore afrayed, and wyst not what waye to turne himself, & deuyded the people that was with him, and the shepe, and the oxen, & the Camels in to two droues, 8 & sayde: Yf Esau come vpon the one droue, and smyte it, the other shal escape. 9 Iacob sayde morouer: O God of my father Abraha, God of my father Isaac, LORDE thou that saydest vnto me: Departe agayne to thine owne londe and to thy kynred, and I wyl do the good: 10 I am to litle for all the mercies and all the trueth that thou hast shewed vnto thy seruaunt (for I had no more but this staff whan I wente ouer this Iordan, and now am I become two droues) 11 delyuer me from ye hande of my brother, fro the hade of Esau, for I am afrayed of him, lest he come and smyte me the mother with the children. 12 Thou saydest: I wyll do the good, and wyll make thy sede as the sonde of ye see, which can not be nombred for multitude. 13 And there he taried that night, and toke of soch as came to hande, a present vnto his brother Esau, 14 two hudreth she goates, twentye he goates, two hundreth shepe, twentye rammes 15 and thirtie mylck camels wt their foales, fourtye kyne, ten bullockes, twentye she Asses with ten foales, 16 and put them in the handes of his seruauntes, euery flock by them selues, & sayde vnto them: Go ye forth before me, & put a space betwixte one flocke after the other, 17 and commaunded the first and sayde: When my brother Esau meteth the, and axeth the: Whose art thou? & whyther goest thou? and whose are these that thou dryuest before the? 18 Thou shalt saye: They be thy seruaunt Iacobs, which sendeth a present vnto his lorde Esau, and commeth behynde vs him self. 19 Thus commaunded he the seconde also, and the thirde, and all them that folowed the flockes, and sayde: Like as I haue tolde you, so speake ye vnto Esau, whan ye mete him, 20 and saye vnto him also: Beholde, yi seruaut Iacob is behynde vs. For he thought: I wyll reconcyle him with the present that goeth before me, after warde wyll I se him my self, peraduenture he shall receaue me to grace. 21 So the present wente before him, but he taried in the tente the same night, 22 and rose vp in ye night, and toke his two wyues and the two maydens and his eleuen sonnes, and wente vnto the foorde of Iacob, 23 toke them and caried them ouer the water, so that all that he had came ouer, 24 and taried him self alone on this syde. Then wrestled there a man with him vntyll the breake of ye daye. 25 And whan he sawe yt he might not ouercome him, he touched the senowe of his thye, and ye senowe of his thye shrancke in wrestlinge with him. 26 And he sayde: Let me go, for ye daye breaketh on. But he answered: I will not let ye go, excepte thou blesse me. 27 He sayde: What is thy name? He answered: Iacob. 28 He sayde: Thou shalt nomore be called Iacob, but Israel, for thou hast stryuen with God and with men, and hast preuayled. 29 And Iacob axed him, & sayde: Tell me, what is yi name? But he sayde: Why axest thou what my name is? And he blessed him there. 30 And Iacob called the place Peniel, for I haue sene God face to face, & my soule is recouered. 31 And as he came ouer fro Peniel, ye Sonne rose vpo him, & he halted vpon his thye. 32 Therfore eate the children of Israel no vane vpon the senow of ye thye vnto this daye, because ye vane vpon the senow of Iacobs thye was touched.
MSTC(i) 1 But Jacob went forth on his journey. And the angels of God came and met him. 2 And when Jacob saw them, he said, "This is God's host," and called the name of that same place Mahanaim. 3 Jacob sent messengers before him to Esau his brother, unto the land of Seir and the field of Edom. 4 And he commanded them, saying, "See that ye speak after this manner to my LORD Esau, 'thy servant, Jacob, sayeth thus: I have sojourned and been a stranger with Laban unto this time; 5 and have gotten oxen, asses and sheep, menservants and womenservants, and have sent to show it my lord, that I may find grace in thy sight.'" 6 And the messengers came again to Jacob, saying, "We came unto thy brother Esau, and he cometh against thee; and four hundred men with him." 7 Then was Jacob greatly afraid, and wist not which way to turn himself, and divided the people that was with him and the sheep, oxen and camels, into two companies, 8 and said, "If Esau come to the one part and smite it, the other may save itself." 9 And Jacob said, "O God of my father Abraham, and God of my father Isaac: LORD, which saidest unto me, 'return unto thy country and to thy kindred, and I will deal well with thee.' 10 I am not worthy of the least of all the mercies and truth which thou hast showed unto thy servant. For with my staff came I over this Jordan, and now have I gotten two droves. 11 Deliver me from the hands of my brother Esau, for I fear him: lest he will come and smite the mother with the children. 12 Thou saidest that thou wouldest surely do me good, and wouldest make my seed as the sand of the sea which can not be numbered for multitude." 13 And he tarried there that same night, and took of that which came to hand, a present, unto Esau his brother: 14 Two hundred she goats and twenty he goats: two hundred sheep and twenty rams: 15 thirty milch camels with their colts: forty cows and ten bulls: twenty she asses and ten foals 16 and delivered them unto his servants, every drove by themselves, and said unto them, "Go forth before me, and put a space betwixt every drove." 17 And he commanded the foremost, saying, "When Esau my brother meeteth thee and asketh thee, saying, 'whose servant art thou and whither goest thou, and whose are these that go before thee?' 18 thou shalt say, 'they be thy servant Jacob's, and are a present sent unto my lord Esau, and behold, he himself cometh after us.'" 19 And so commanded he the second, and even so the third, and likewise all that followed the droves, saying, "Of this manner see that ye speak unto Esau when ye meet him, 20 and say moreover. 'Behold thy servant Jacob cometh after us.'" For he said, "I will appease his wrath with the present that goeth before me, and afterward I will see him myself, so peradventure he will receive me to grace." 21 So went the present before him, and he tarried all that night in the tent, 22 and rose up the same night and took his two wives and his two maidens and his eleven sons, and went over the ford Jabbok. 23 And he took them and sent them over the river, and sent over that he had, 24 and tarried behind; himself alone. And there wrestled a man with him unto the breaking of the day. 25 And when he saw that he could not prevail against him, he smote him under the thigh, and the sinew of Jacob's thigh shrank as he wrestled with him. 26 And he said, "Let me go, for the day breaketh." And he said, "I will not let thee go, except thou bless me." 27 And he said unto him, "What is thy name?" He answered, "Jacob." 28 And he said, "Thou shalt be called Jacob no more, but Israel. For thou hast wrestled with God and with men and hast prevailed." 29 And Jacob asked him, saying, "Tell me thy name." And he said, "Wherefore dost thou ask after my name?" And he blessed him there. 30 And Jacob called the name of the place Peniel, "for I have seen God face to face, and yet is my life reserved." 31 And as he went over Peniel, the sun rose upon him, and he halted upon his thigh. 32 Wherefore the children of Israel eat not of the sinew that shrank under the thigh, unto this day: because that he smote Jacob under the thigh in the sinew that shrank.
Matthew(i) 1 But Iacob went forth on his iourney. And the angels of God came & met hym. 2 And when Iacob sawe them, he said, thys is Gods hoost: & called the name of that same place, Mahanaim. 3 Iacob sent messengers before him to Esau hys brother, vnto the land of Seir, and the fyeld of Edom 4 And he commaunded theym sayinge: see that ye speake after thys maner to my Lord Esau: thy seruaunte Iacob sayeth thus. I haue soiourned and bene a straunger wyth Laban vnto thys time, 5 and haue gotten oxen, asses, and shepe, menseruauntes & womenseruauntes, & haue sent to shew it my Lord, that I may finde grace in thy sight. 6 And the messengers came againe to Iacob sayinge: we came vnto thi brother Esau, & he commeth agaynst the & .iiij. hundred men wyth him. 7 Then was Iacob greatly afrayed, & wyste not whych way to turne him selfe, and deuided the people that was wyth hym, and the shepe, oxen, & camels, into .ij. companyes, 8 & sayd: If Esau come to the one part & smite it the other maye saue it selfe. 9 And Iacob said: O god of mi father Abraham, & God of my father Isaac: Lord whiche saydest vnto me, returne vnto thy countrye & to thy kynred, & I wyll do all well with the. 10 I am not worthy of the leaste of all the mercies & trueth whyche thou hast shewed vnto thy seruaunt. For wyth my stafe came I ouer thys Iordane, & now haue I goten two droues. 11 Deliuer me from the handes of my brother Esau: for I feare hym: least he wyll come and smyte the mother wyth the chyldren. 12 Thou saydest that thou wouldest surely do me good, and wouldest make my sede as the sande of the sea, whyche canne not be numbred for multitude. 13 And he taried ther that same nyghte, and toke of that which came to hand a present, vnto Esau hys brother 14 .ij. hundred she gootes, and .xx. he gootes: .ij. hundred shepe, and .xx. rammes: 15 thyrtye mylch camels wyth their coltes .xl. kyne, and .x. bulles .xx. she asses, & .x. foles, 16 and deliuered theym vnto hys seruauntes, euery droue by them selues, & said vnto theim, go forth before me & put a space betwyxte euerye droue. 17 And he commaunded the formest sayinge. When Esau mi brother meteth the & axeth the sayinge: whose seruaunte arte thou and whither goest thou, and whose are these that go before the: 18 thou shalte say they be thy seruaunt Iacobs, and are a present sent vnto my Lorde Esau, and beholde he him selfe commeth after vs. 19 And so commaunded he the second, & euen so the thyrd, & likewise al that folowed the droues sayinge, of this maner se that ye speake vnto Esau saying when ye mete hym, 20 & said moreouer. Behold thy seruaunt Iacob cometh after vs, for he said. I wyl pease his wrath wt the present that goth before me, and afterward I wil se hym my selfe, so peraduenture he wil receiue me to grace. 21 So wente the present before hym and he taried all that nyght in the tent, 22 and rose vp the same night and toke hys two wyues, and his two maydens and hys .xi. sonnes, and went ouer the fourd Iabok. 23 And he toke them and sent them ouer the ryuer, and sente ouer that he had, 24 & taried behind hym selfe alone. And ther wresteled a man wyth him vnto the breaking of the day. 25 And when he sawe that he could not preuayle agaynste hym, he smote hym vnder the thye, & the senowe of Iacobs thye shranke as he wrestled with him 26 And he said: let me goo, for the day breaketh. And he said: I wyll not lette the go, excepte thou blesse me. 27 And he sayd vnto hym: what is thy name? He answered: Iacob. 28 And he said: thou shalt be called Iacob no more, but Israel. For thou hast wresteled with God and hast preuayled. 29 And Iacob asked hym sayinge, tell me thy name. And he said, wherfore doest thou aske after my name? & he blessed hym there. 30 And Iacob called the name of that place Pheniel for I haue sene God face to face, & yet is my life reserued. 31 And as he went ouer Pheniel the sonne rose vpon him, & he halted vpon his thye: 32 wherfore the children of Israell eate not of the senow that shranke vnder the thye, vnto thys daye: bicause that he smote Iacob vnder the thye in the senowe that shroncke.
Great(i) 1 But Iacob went forth on his iourney. Thus shall ye speake to my Lord Esau: thy seruaunte Iacob sayth thus: I haue sogeorned & bene a straunger wyth Laban vnto thys tym 5 and haue oxen, asses & shepe men seruauntes and wemenseruauntes, and haue sent to shewe it my Lorde, that I may fynde grace in thy syghte. 6 And the messengers came agayne to Iacob saying: we came vnto thy brother Esau, and he commeth agaynst the & hath .iiii. hundreth men wt hym. 7 But Iacob was greatly afrayed, and wyst not whych waye to turne hym selfe, and deuyded the people that was wyth hym & the shepe, & oxen & camels, into .ii. companyes: 8 & sayd: If Esau come to the one parte & smyte it, the other shall saue it selfe. 9 And Iacob sayde agayne: O God of my father Abraham; & God of my father Isahac: Lorde whych saydest vnto me returne vnto thy countre and to thy kynred, & I wyll do all well wyth the. 10 I am not worthy of the leaste of all the mercyes and truthe whych thou hast shewed vnto thy seruaunte. If Esau my brother mete the and aske the sayinge: whose art thou, and whyther goest thou: & whose are these that goo before the? 18 thou shalt saye, they be thy seruaunte Iacobs, and it is a present sent vnto my Lord Esau, and beholde, he hym selfe commeth after vs: 19 And so commaunded he the seconde, and the thyrde, and all that folowed the droues sayinge of thys maner se that ye speake vnto Esau when ye mete hym 20 and saye moreouer: thy seruaunte Iacob also commeth after vs, for he sayde: I wyll pease his wrath with the present that goeth before me, and afterward I wyll see hym my selfe, yf peraduenture he wyll receaue me to grace: 21 So went the present before hym and he taryed all that nyght in the company, and rose vp the same nyghte, 22 and toke hys two wyues and hys two maydens, and hys eleuen sonnes, and went ouer the foorde Iabok 23 And he toke them and sent them ouer the ryuer, and sent ouer that he had, 24 and taried behinde hym selfe alone. And there wrastled a man wyth hym vnto the breakynge of the daye. 25 And when he sawe that he coulde not preuayle against hym, he smote hym vnder the thye, and the senowe of Iacobs thye shranke, as he wrastled wyth hym. 26 And he sayde: let me goo, for the daye breaketh. Which answered: I wyll not let the goo, excepte thou blesse me. 27 And he sayde vnto hym: what is thy name? He answered: Iacob. 28 He sayde: thou shalt be called Iacob nomore, but Israell. For as a prynce hast thou wrastled wyth God: and wyth man, and hast preuayled. 29 And Iacob asked hym sayinge: tell me thy name. And he sayde, wherfore dost thou so aske after my name? and he blessed hym there. 30 And Iacob called the name of the place Pheniel, for I haue sene God face to face, & my lyfe is preserued. 31 And as he went ouer Pheniel, the sonne rose vpon hym, and he halted vpon hys thye. 32 And therfore is it that the chyldren of Israell eate not of the senow that shranke in that place of the thye, vnto thys daye: because that he touched the place of Iacobs thye in the senow that shroncke.
Geneva(i) 1 Nowe Iaakob went forth on his iourney and the Angels of God met him. 2 And when Iaakob saw them, he said, This is Gods hoste, and called the name of the same place Mahanaim. 3 Then Iaakob sent messengers before him to Esau his brother, vnto the land of Seir into the countrey of Edom: 4 To whom he gaue commandement, saying, Thus shall ye speake to my lorde Esau: thy seruant Iaakob sayeth thus, I haue bene a stranger with Laban, and taried vnto this time. 5 I haue beeues also and Asses, sheepe, and men seruantes, and women seruantes, and haue sent to shew my lord, that I may find grace in thy sight. 6 So ye messengers came againe to Iaakob, saying, We came vnto thy brother Esau, and hee also commeth against thee and foure hundreth men with him. 7 Then Iaakob was greatly afraid, and was sore troubled, and deuided the people that was with him, and the sheepe, and the beeues, and the camels into two companies. 8 For he said, If Esau come to ye one company and smite it, the other companie shall escape. 9 Moreouer Iaakob said, O God of my father Abraham, and God of my father Izhak: Lord, which saydest vnto me, Returne vnto thy coutrey and to thy kinred, and I will do thee good, 10 I am not worthy of the least of all the mercies, and al the trueth, which thou hast shewed vnto thy seruant: for with my staffe came I ouer this Iorden, and now haue I gotte two bads. 11 I pray thee, Deliuer me from the hande of my brother, from the hande of Esau: for I feare him, least he will come and smite me, and the mother vpon the children. 12 For thou saydest; I will surely doe thee good, and make thy seede as the sande of the sea, which can not be nombred for multitude. 13 And he taryed there the same night, and tooke of that which came to had, a present for Esau his brother: 14 Two hundreth shee goates and twenty hee goates, two hundreth ewes and twentie rammes: 15 Thirtie mylche camels with their coltes, fourtie kine, and ten bullockes, twentie she asses and ten foles. 16 So he deliuered them into the hande of his seruants, euery droue by themselues, and saide vnto his seruants, Passe before me, and put a space betweene droue and droue. 17 And he commanded the formost, saying, If Esau my brother meete thee, and aske thee, saying, Whose seruant art thou? And whither goest thou? And whose are these before thee? 18 Then thou shalt say, They be thy seruant Iaakobs: it is a present sent vnto my lord Esau: and beholde, he him selfe also is behinde vs. 19 So likewise commanded he the seconde and the thirde, and all that followed the droues, saying, After this maner, ye shall speake vnto Esau, when ye finde him. 20 And ye shall say moreouer, Beholde, thy seruant Iaakob commeth after vs (for he thought, I will appease his wrath with the present that goeth before me, and afterwarde I will see his face: it may be that he will accept me.) 21 So went the present before him: but he taried that night with the companie. 22 And he rose vp the same night, and tooke his two wiues, and his two maides, and his eleuen children, and went ouer the forde Iabbok. 23 And he tooke them, and sent them ouer the riuer, and sent ouer that he had. 24 Now when Iaakob was left him selfe alone, there wrestled a man with him vnto the breaking of the day. 25 And he sawe that he could not preuaile against him: therefore he touched the holowe of his thigh, and the holowe of Iaakobs thigh was loosed, as he wrestled with him. 26 And he saide, Let me goe, for the morning appeareth. Who answered, I will not let thee go except thou blesse me. 27 Then said he vnto him, What is thy name? And he said, Iaakob. 28 Then said he, Thy name shalbe called Iaakob no more, but Israel: because thou hast had power with God, thou shalt also preuaile with men. 29 Then Iaakob demaded, saying, Tell me, I pray thee, thy name. And he said, Wherefore now doest thou aske my name? and he blessed him there 30 And Iaakob called the name of the place, Peniel: for, saide he, I haue seene God face to face, and my life is preserued. 31 And the sunne rose vp to him as he passed Peniel, and he halted vpon his thigh. 32 Therefore the children of Israel eate not of the sinewe that shranke in the hollowe of the thigh, vnto this day: because he touched the sinew that shranke in the holow of Iaakobs thigh.
Bishops(i) 1 But Iacob went foorth on his iourney, and the angelles of God came and met him 2 And when Iacob saw them, he sayde: this is gods hoste, & called the name of the same place, Mahanaim 3 And Iacob sent messengers before him to Esau his brother, vnto the lande of Seir, the fielde of Edom 4 And he commaunded them, saying: Thus shall ye speake to my Lorde Esau, thy seruaunt Iacob sayeth thus: I haue ben a straunger with Laban, and haue stayed there vnto this time 5 And haue oxen, asses, and sheepe, menseruauntes, and womenseruauntes: and haue sent to shewe [it] my Lord, that I may finde grace in thy sight 6 And the messengers came agayne to Iacob, saying: we came to thy brother Esau, and he commeth to meete thee, and hath foure hundred men with him 7 But Iacob was greatly afrayde, and wist not whiche way to turne him selfe: and deuided the people that was with him, and the sheepe, and oxen, and camelles, into two companies 8 And sayd, if Esau come to the one part and smite it, the other shall saue it selfe 9 And Iacob said agayne: O God of my father Abraham, and God of my father Isahac, Lorde whiche saydest vnto me, returne vnto thy countrey, and to thy kindred, & I will do well with thee 10 I am not worthy of the least of all the mercyes and trueth whiche thou hast shewed vnto thy seruaunt: for with my staffe came I ouer this Iordane, & nowe haue I gotten two companies 11 Deliuer me from the hand of my brother Esau, for I feare hym, lest he wyll come and smyte me, [yea] the mother with the chyldren 12 Thou saydest, I wyll surely do thee good, and make thy seede as the sande of the sea, whiche can not be numbred for multitude 13 And he taryed there that same nyght, and toke of that whiche came to hande, a present for Esau his brother 14 Two hundred shee gotes, and twentie hee gotes, two hundred sheepe, & twentie rammes 15 Thirtie milche camelles with theyr coltes, fourtie kine, and ten bulles, twentie shee asses, and ten foales 16 And deliuered them into the handes of his seruauntes, euery droue by them selues, and sayde vnto his seruauntes: go foorth before me, and put a space betwixt droue and droue 17 And he commaunded the formost, saying: If Esau my brother meete thee, and aske thee, saying, whose art thou? and whyther goest thou? and whose are these [that go] before thee 18 Thou shalt say, they be thy seruaunt Iacobs, and it is a present sent vnto my Lorde Esau, and beholde, he him selfe commeth after vs 19 And so commaunded he the seconde, and the thirde, and all that folowed the droues, saying: on this maner see that you speake vnto Esau when ye meete hym 20 And say moreouer: beholde, thy seruaunt Iacob also commeth after vs: for he sayde, I wyll appeace his wrath with the present that goeth before me, and afterward I will see him my selfe, peraduenture he wyll receaue me to grace 21 So went the present before hym: and he taryed al that night in the company 22 And he rose vp the same nyght, and toke his two wyues, & his two maydeseruauntes, and his eleuen sonnes, and went ouer the forde Iaboc 23 And he toke them, and sent them ouer the ryuer, and sent ouer that he had 24 And Iacob was left hym selfe alone: and there wrasteled a man with hym, vnto the breakyng of the day 25 And when he sawe that he coulde not preuayle agaynst hym, he smote hym vpon the hucklebone of his thigh, and the hucklebone of Iacobs thigh loosed out of ioynt as he wrastled with him 26 And he said: let me go, for the day breaketh. Whiche aunswered: I will not let thee go, except thou blesse me 27 And he sayde vnto hym: what is thy name? He aunswered: Iacob 28 He sayde: thy name shalbe called no more Iacob, but Israel: For as a prince hast thou wrasteled with God, and with men, and hast preuayled 29 And Iacob asked him, saying: tell me thy name. And he sayde: wherefore doest thou aske after my name? DouayRheims(i) 1 Jacob also went on the journey he had begun: and the angels of God met him. 2 And when he saw them, he said: These are the camps of God, and he called the name of that place Mahanaim, that is, Camps. 3 And he sent messengers before him to Esau, his brother, to the land of Seir, to the country of Edom: 4 And he commanded them, saying: Thus shall ye speak to my lord Esau: Thus saith thy brother Jacob: I have sojourned with Laban, and have been with him until this day: 5 I have oxen, and asses, and sheep, and menservants, and womenservants: and now I send a message to my lord, that I may find favour in thy sight. 6 And the messengers returned to Jacob, saying: We came to Esau, thy brother, and behold he cometh with speed to meet thee with four hundred men. 7 Then Jacob was greatly afraid; and in his fear divided the people that was with him, and the flocks, and the sheep, and the oxen, and the camels, into two companies, 8 Saying: If Esau come to one company, and destroy it, the other company that is left, shall escape. 9 And Jacob said: O God of my fahter Abraham, and God of my father Isaac: O Lord who saidst to me, Return to thy land, and to the place of thy birth, and I will do well for thee. 10 I am not worthy of the least of all thy mercies, and of thy truth which thou hast fulfilled to thy servant. With my staff I passed over this Jordan; and now I return with two companies. 11 Deliver me from the hand of my brother Esau, for I am greatly afraid of him; lest perhaps he come, and kill the mother with the children. 12 Thou didst say, that thou wouldst do well by me, and multiply my seed like the sand of the sea, which connot be numbered for multitude. 13 And when he had slept there that night, he set apart, of the things which he had, presents for his brother Esau, 14 Two hundred she goats, twenty he goats, two hundred ewes, and twenty rams, 15 Thirty milch camels with their colts, forty kine, and twenty bulls, twenty she asses, and ten of their foals. 16 And he sent them by the hands of his servants, every drove by itself, and he said to his servants: Go before me, and let there be a space between drove and drove. 17 And he commanded the first, saying: If thou meet my brother Esau, and he ask thee: Whose art thou? or whither goest thou? or whose are these before thee? 18 Thou shalt answer: Thy servant Jacob's: he hath sent them as a present to my lord Esau; and he cometh after us. 19 In like manner he commanded the second, and the third, and all that followed the droves, saying: Speak ye the same words to Esau, when ye find him. 20 And ye shall add: Thy servant Jacob himself also followeth after us; for he said: I will appease him with the presents that go before, and afterwards I will see him, perhaps he will be gracious to me. 21 So the presents went before him, but himself lodged that night in the camp. 22 And rising early, he took his two wives and his two handmaids, with his eleven sons, and passed over the ford of Jaboc. 23 And when all things were brought over that belonged to him, 24 He remained alone; and behold, a man wrestled with him till morning. 25 And when he saw that he could not overcome him, he touched the sinew of his thigh, and forthwith it shrank. 26 And he said to him: Let me go, for it is break of day. He answered: I will not let thee go, except thou bless me. 27 And he said: What is thy name? He answered: Jacob. 28 But he said: Thy name shall not be called Jacob, but Israel; for if thou hast been strong against God, how much more shalt thou prevail against men? 29 Jacob asked him: Tell me by what name art thou called? He answered: Why dost thou ask my name? And he blessed him in the same place. 30 And Jacob called the name of the place Phanuel, saying: I have seen God face to face, and my soul has been saved. 31 And immediately the sun rose upon him, after he was past Phanuel; but he halted on his foot. 32 Therefore the children of Israel, unto this day, eat not the sinew, that shrank in Jacob's thigh: because he touched the sinew of his thigh and it shrank.

Thomson(i) 1 and Jacob proceeded on his journey. And raising his eyes he saw a camp of God pitched and messengers of God were coming to meet him. 2 And when Jacob saw them he said, That is a camp of God, So he called the name of that place Camps. 3 Now Jacob had sent messengers before him to his brother Esau, to the land of Seir, to the country of Edom, 4 and had given them a charge, saying, Thus shall you say to my lord Esau, Thus saith thy servant Jacob, I have sojourned with Laban and staid till now. 5 And I have got oxen and asses and sheep and men servants and maid servants. And I have sent to give notice to my lord Esau, that thy servant may find favour in thy sight. 6 So the messengers returned to Jacob and said, We have been to thy brother Esau; and lo! he is coming to meet thee; and four hundred men with him. 7 Thereupon Jacob was greatly terrified and distressed. And he divided the people who were with him and the cattle and the camels and the flocks into two camps. 8 And Jacob said, If Esau come to the first camp and smite it, there will be another camp to escape. 9 Then Jacob said, God of my father Abraham, and the God of my father Isaak, Thou, Lord, who saidst to me, Return to the land of thy nativity, and I will deal well with thee; 10 let me be satisfied with all the kindness and with all the truth which thou hast shewn to thy servant. For with this staff of mine I crossed the Jordan, but now I am become two camps. 11 Deliver me from the hand of my brother; from the hand of Esau; for I am afraid of him. Peradventure he may come and smite me and the mother with the children. 12 But thou hast said, I will deal well with thee and make thy seed like the sand of the sea, which, for multitude cannot be numbered. 13 So he halted there that night and took presents of what he had brought and sent to his brother Esau 14 two hundred she-goats and twenty he-goats; two hundred ewes and twenty rams; 15 thirty milch camels with their thirty colts; forty cows and ten bulls; twenty asses and ten foles. 16 These he delivered to his servants, each drove by itself, and he said to his servants, Go on before me and make a small distance between drove and drove. 17 And he gave orders to the first saying, If my brother Esau meet thee and ask thee saying, To whom dost thou belong, and whither art thou going? And whose are these before thee? 18 thou shalt say, They belong to thy servant Jacob; presents which he hath sent to my lord Esau. And lo! he is behind us. 19 This charge he gave to the first, and to the second, and to the third, and to all who went before him after their droves, saying, In this manner speak to Esau when you meet him. 20 Moreover ye shall say, Behold thy servant Jacob is coming behind us. For he said, I will appease him with these previous gifts, and afterwards I will look him in the face, perhaps he will receive me favourably. 21 So the presents went on before him; but he lay that night in the camp. 22 And he arose in the night and took his two wives with the two handmaids and his eleven sons and crossed the ford of Jabok. 23 And when he had taken and conducted them over the brook he caused all belonging to him to cross over; 24 and Jacob was left alone. And a man wrestled with him till the morning. 25 And when he saw that he could not prevail against him he touched the hollow of his thigh; and the hollow of Jacob's thigh became numb, in wrestling with him. 26 And he said to him, Let me go: for the dawn approached. But Jacob said I will not let thee go unless thou bless me. 27 And he said to him what is thy name? to which he replied, Jacob. 28 Thereupon he said to him, Thy name shall no more be Jacob only, but Israel also shall be thy name. Since thou hast been enabled to prevail with God, therefore with men thou shalt be mighty. 29 Then Jacob asked him saying, Tell me thy name. And he said why dost thou ask my name? Then he blessed him there. 30 And Jacob called the name of that place, Face of God: for I have seen God face to face and my life is preserved. 31 Now the sun was risen when he departed from Face of God: and he limped with his thigh. 32 For this cause even to this day the children of Israel do not eat the sinew which is in the hollow of the thigh which was numbed; for he had touched the hollow of Jacob's thigh on the sinew and it was numbed.
Webster(i) 1 And Jacob went on his way, and the angels of God met him. 2 And when Jacob saw them, he said, This is God's host: and he called the name of that place Mahanaim. 3 And Jacob sent messengers before him to Esau his brother, to the land of Seir, the country of Edom. 4 And he commanded them, saying, Thus shall ye speak to my lord Esau: Thy servant Jacob saith thus, I have sojourned with Laban, and stayed there till now: 5 And I have oxen, and asses, flocks, and men-servants, and women-servants: and I have sent to tell my lord, that I may find grace in thy sight. 6 And the messengers returned to Jacob, saying, We came to thy brother Esau, and also he is coming to meet thee, and four hundred men with him. 7 Then Jacob was greatly afraid, and distressed: and he divided the people that were with him, and the flocks, and herds, and camels, into two bands; 8 And said, If Esau shall come to the one company, and smite it, then the other company which is left, will escape. 9 And Jacob said, O God of my father Abraham, and God of my father Isaac, the LORD who saidst to me, Return to thy country, and to thy kindred, and I will deal well with thee; 10 I am not worthy of the least of all the mercies, and of all the truth, which thou hast shown to thy servant: for with my staff I passed over this Jordan, and now I am become two bands. 11 Deliver me, I pray thee, from the hand of my brother, from the hand of Esau: for I fear him, lest he shall come and smite me, and the mother with the children. 12 And thou saidst, I will surely do thee good, and make thy seed as the sand of the sea, which cannot be numbered for multitude. 13 And he lodged there that same night; and took of that which came to his hand a present for Esau, his brother; 14 Two hundred she-goats, and twenty he-goats, two hundred ewes and twenty rams, 15 Thirty milch camels with their colts, forty cows and ten bulls, twenty she-asses and ten foals. 16 And he delivered them into the hand of his servants, every drove by themselves; and said to his servants, Pass over before me, and put a space betwixt drove and drove. 17 And he commanded the foremost, saying, When Esau, my brother, meeteth thee, and asketh thee, saying, Whose art thou? and whither goest thou? and whose are these before thee? 18 Then thou shalt say, They are thy servant Jacob's: it is a present sent to my lord Esau: and behold also he is behind us. 19 And so he commanded the second, and the third, and all that followed the droves, saying, In this manner shall ye speak to Esau, when ye find him. 20 And say ye moreover, Behold, thy servant Jacob is behind us. For he said, I will appease him with the present that goeth before me, and afterward I will see his face; peradventure he will accept of me. 21 So the present went over before him; and he himself lodged that night in the company. 22 And he arose that night, and took his two wives, and his two women-servants, and his eleven sons, and passed over the ford Jabbok. 23 And he took them, and sent them over the brook, and sent over that which he had. 24 And Jacob was left alone; and there wrestled a man with him, until the breaking of the day. 25 And when he saw that he prevailed not against him, he touched the hollow of his thigh: and the hollow of Jacob's thigh was out of joint, as he wrestled with him. 26 And he said, Let me go, for the day breaketh; And he said, I will not let thee go, except thou bless me. 27 And he said to him, What is thy name? And he said, Jacob. 28 And he said, Thy name shall be called no more Jacob, but Israel: for as a prince hast thou power with God, and with men, and hast prevailed. 29 And Jacob asked him, and said, Tell me, I pray thee, thy name: And he said, why is it that thou dost ask after my name? and he blessed him there. 30 And Jacob called the name of the place Peniel: for I have seen God face to face, and my life is preserved. 31 And as he passed over Penuel the sun rose upon him, and he halted upon his thigh. 32 Therefore the children of Israel eat not of the sinew which shrunk, which is upon the hollow of the thigh, to this day; because he touched the hollow of Jacob's thigh in the sinew that shrunk.

  13 H3885 [H8799] And he lodged H3915 there that same night H3947 [H8799] ; and took H935 [H8802] of that which came H3027 to his hand H4503 a present H6215 for Esau H251 his brother;

  17 H6680 [H8762] And he commanded H7223 the foremost H559 [H8800] , saying H6215 , When Esau H251 my brother H6298 [H8799] meeteth thee H7592 [H8804] , and asketh thee H559 [H8800] , saying H3212 [H8799] , Whose art thou? and where goest H6440 thou? and whose are these before thee?
  18 H559 [H8804] Then thou shalt say H5650 , They are thy servant H3290 Jacob's H4503 ; it is a present H7971 [H8803] sent H113 to my lord H6215 Esau H310 : and, behold, also he is behind us.
  19 H1571 And so H6680 [H8762] he commanded H8145 the second H7992 , and the third H1980 H310 [H8802] , and all that followed H5739 the droves H559 [H8800] , saying H1697 , In this manner H1696 [H8762] shall ye speak H6215 to Esau H4672 [H8800] , when ye find him.
  20 H559 [H8804] And say ye H1571 moreover H5650 , Behold, thy servant H3290 Jacob H310 is behind us H559 [H8804] . For he said H3722 [H8762] , I will appease H6440 him H4503 with the present H1980 [H8802] that goeth H6440 before me H310 , and afterward H7200 [H8799] I will see H6440 his face H5375 [H8799] ; perhaps he will accept H6440 of me.
21 H4503 So the present H5674 [H8799] went over H6440 before him H3885 [H8804] : and he himself lodged H3915 that night H4264 in the company.
  22 H6965 [H8799] And he arose H3915 that night H3947 [H8799] , and took H8147 his two H802 wives H8147 , and his two H8198 female servants H6240 H259 , and his eleven H3206 sons H5674 [H8799] , and passed over H4569 the ford H2999 Jabbok.

24 H3290 And Jacob H3498 [H8735] was left H79 [H8735] alone; and there wrestled H376 a man H5927 [H8800] with him until the breaking H7837 of the day.
25 H7200 [H8799] And when he saw H3201 [H8804] that he prevailed H5060 [H8799] not against him, he touched H3409 the hollow of his thigh H3709 ; and the hollow H3290 of Jacob's H3409 thigh H3363 [H8799] was out of joint H79 [H8736] , as he wrestled with him.
  26 H559 [H8799] And he said H7971 [H8761] , Let me go H7837 , for the day H5927 [H8804] breaketh H559 [H8799] . And he said H7971 [H8762] , I will not let thee go H518 , except H1288 [H8765] thou bless me.
  27 H559 [H8799] And he said H8034 to him, What is thy name H559 [H8799] ? And he said H3290 , Jacob.
  28 H559 [H8799] And he said H8034 , Thy name H559 [H8735] shall be called H3290 no more Jacob H3478 , but Israel H8280 [H8804] : for as a prince hast thou power H430 with God H582 and with men H3201 [H8799] , and hast prevailed.
  29 H3290 And Jacob H7592 [H8799] asked H559 [H8799] him, and said H5046 [H8685] , Tell H8034 me, I pray thee, thy name H559 [H8799] . And he said H2088 , why is it H7592 [H8799] that thou dost ask H8034 after my name H1288 [H8762] ? And he blessed him there.
  30 H3290 And Jacob H7121 [H8799] called H8034 the name H4725 of the place H6439 Peniel H7200 [H8804] : for I have seen H430 God H6440 face H6440 to face H5315 , and my life H5337 [H8735] is preserved.
31 H5674 [H8804] And as he passed over H6439 Penuel H8121 the sun H2224 [H8799] rose H6760 [H8802] upon him, and he limped H3409 upon his thigh.
32 H1121 Therefore the children H3478 of Israel H398 [H8799] eat H1517 not of the sinew H5384 which shrank H3709 , which is upon the hollow H3409 of the thigh H3117 , to this day H5060 [H8804] : because he touched H3709 the hollow H3290 of Jacob's H3409 thigh H1517 in the sinew H5384 that shrank.
Brenton(i) 1 And Jacob departed for his journey; and having looked up, he saw the host of God encamped; and the angels of God met him. 2 And Jacob said, when he saw them, This is the Camp of God; and he called the name of that place, Encampments. 3 And Jacob sent messengers before him to Esau his brother to the land of Seir, to the country of Edom. 4 And he charged them, saying, Thus shall ye say to my lord Esau: Thus saith thy servant Jacob; I have sojourned with Laban and tarried until now. 5 And there were born to me oxen, and asses, and sheep, and men-servants and women-servants; and I sent to tell my lord Esau, that thy servant might find grace in thy sight. 6 And the messengers returned to Jacob, saying, We came to thy brother Esau, and lo! he comes to meet thee, and four hundred men with him. 7 And Jacob was greatly terrified, and was perplexed; and he divided the people that was with him, and the cows, and the camels, and the sheep, into two camps. 8 And Jacob said, If Esau should come to one camp, and smite it, the other camp shall be in safety. 9 And Jacob said, God of my father Abraam, and God of my father Isaac, O Lord, thou art he that said to me, Depart quickly to the land of thy birth, and I will do thee good. 10 Let there be to me a sufficiency of all the justice and all the truth which thou hast wrought with thy servant; for with this my staff I passed over this Jordan, and now I am become two camps. 11 Deliver me from the hand of my brother, from the hand of Esau, for I am afraid of him, lest haply he should come and smite me, and the mother upon the children. 12 But thou saidst, I will do thee good, and will make thy seed as the sand of the sea, which shall not be numbered for multitude. 13 And he slept there that night, and took of the gifts which he carried with him, and sent out to Esau his brother, 14 two hundred she-goats, twenty he-goats, two hundred sheep, twenty rams, 15 milch camels, and their foals, thirty, forty kine, ten bulls, twenty asses, and ten colts. 16 And he gave them to his servants each drove apart; and he said to his servants, Go on before me, and put a space between drove and drove. 17 And he charged the first, saying, If Esau my brother meet thee, and he ask thee, saying, Whose art thou? and whither wouldest thou go, and whose are these possessions advancing before thee? 18 Thou shalt say, Thy servant Jacob's; he hath sent gifts to my lord Esau, and lo! he is behind us. 19 And he charged the first and the second and the third, and all that went before him after these flocks, saying, Thus shall ye speak to Esau when ye find him; 20 and ye shall say, Behold thy servant Jacob comes after us. For he said, I will propitiate his countenance with the gifts going before his presence, and afterwards I will behold his face, for peradventure he will accept me. 21 So the presents went on before him, but he himself lodged that night in the camp. 22 And he rose up in that night, and took his two wives and his two servant-maids, and his eleven children, and crossed over the ford of Jaboch. 23 And he took them, and passed over the torrent, and brought over all his possessions. 24 And Jacob was left alone; and a man wrestled with him till the morning. 25 And he saw that he prevailed not against him; and he touched the broad part of his thigh, and the broad part of Jacob's thigh was benumbed in his wrestling with him. 26 And he said to him, Let me go, for the day has dawned; but he said, I will not let thee go, except thou bless me. 27 And he said to him, What is thy name? and he answered, Jacob. 28 And he said to him, Thy name shall no longer be called Jacob, but Israel shall be thy name; for thou hast prevailed with God, and shalt be mighty with men. 29 And Jacob asked and said, Tell me thy name; and he said, Wherefore dost thou ask after my name? and he blessed him there. 30 And Jacob called the name of that place, the Face of God; for, said he, I have seen God face to face, and my life was preserved. 31 And the sun rose upon him, when he passed the Face of God; and he halted upon his thigh. 32 Therefore the children of Israel will by no means eat of the sinew which was benumbed, which is on the broad part of the thigh, until this day, because the angel touched the broad part of the thigh of Jacob — even the sinew which was benumbed.

Leeser(i) 1 And Jacob went on his way, and there met him angels of God. 2 And when Jacob saw them, he said, This is a host of God; and he called the name of that place Machanayim. 3 And Jacob sent messengers before him to Esau his brother unto the land of Seir, the country of Edom. 4 And he commanded them, saying, Thus shall ye speak unto my lord, to Esau, Thus hath said thy servant Jacob, With Laban have I sojourned, and stayed until now. 5 And I have acquired oxen, and asses, flocks, and men-servants, and women-servants; and I send now to tell my lord, to find grace in thy eyes. 6 And the messengers returned to Jacob, saying, We came to thy brother, to Esau, and also he cometh to meet thee, and four hundred men with him. 7 Then Jacob was greatly afraid, and he felt distressed; and he divided the people that were with him, and the flocks, and the herds, and the camels, into two bands. 8 And he said, If Esau should come to the one band and smite it, then the other band which is left may escape. 9 And Jacob said, O God of my father Abraham, and God of my father Isaac, the Lord who saidst unto me, Return unto thy country, and to thy birthplace, and I will deal well with thee: 10 I am not worthy of all the kindness, and of all the truth, which thou hast shown unto thy servant; for with my staff I passed over this Jordan; and now I am become two bands. 11 Deliver me, I pray thee, from the hand of my brother, from the hand of Esau; for I fear him, lest he will come and smite me, the mother with the children. 12 And thou saidst, I will surely do thee good, and make thy seed as the sand of the sea, which cannot be numbered for multitude. 13 And he lodged there that same night; and he took of that which he carried with him a present for Esau his brother: 14 Two hundred she-goats, and twenty he-goats, two hundred ewes, and twenty rams. 15 Thirty milch camels with their colts, forty cows, and ten bulls, twenty she-asses, and ten foals. 16 And he delivered them into the hand of his servants, every drove by itself; and he said unto his servants, Pass on before me, and put a space between drove and drove. 17 And he commanded the foremost, saying, When Esau my brother should meet thee, and ask thee, saying, Whose art thou? and whither art thou going? and for whom are these before thee? 18 Then shalt thou say, They belong to thy servant, to Jacob; it is a present sent unto my lord, to Esau; and, behold, also, he is himself behind us. 19 And so he commanded also the second, also the third, as also all that followed the droves, saying, After this manner shall ye speak unto Esau, when ye find him. 20 And say ye moreover, Behold, also thy servant Jacob is behind us. For he said, I will appease him with the present that goeth before me, and afterward I will see his face; peradventure he will receive me kindly. 21 The present went thus on before him; and he lodged himself that night in the camp. 22 And he rose up that night, and he took his two wives, and his two women-servants, and his eleven sons, and passed over the ford of the Yabbok. 23 And he took them, and sent them over the stream and sent over what he had. 24 And Jacob was left alone; and there wrestled a man with him until the breaking of the day. 25 And when he saw that he could net prevail against him, he struck against the hollow of his thigh; and the hollow of Jacob’s thigh was put out of joint, as he was wrestling with him. 26 And he said, Let me go, for the day hath dawned. And he said, I will not let thee go until thou hast blessed me. 27 And he said unto him, What is thy name? and he said, Jacob. 28 And he said, Not Jacob shall any more be called thy name, but Israel; for as a prince hast thou power with God and with men, and hast prevailed. 29 And Jacob asked him, and said, tell me, I pray thee, thy name. And he said, Wherefore is it that thou dost ask after my name? And he blessed him there. 30 And Jacob called the name of the place Peniel: for I have seen an angel of God face to face, and my life hath been preserved. 31 And the sun rose unto him as he passed by Penuel, and he halted upon his thigh. 32 Therefore do the children of Israel not eat the sinew which shrank, which is upon the hollow of the thigh, unto this day; because he struck against the hollow of Jacob’s thigh on the sinew that shrank.
YLT(i) 1 And Jacob hath gone on his way, and messengers of God come upon him; 2 and Jacob saith, when he hath seen them, `This is the camp of God;' and he calleth the name of that place `Two Camps.'
3 And Jacob sendeth messengers before him unto Esau his brother, towards the land of Seir, the field of Edom, 4 and commandeth them, saying, `Thus do ye say to my lord, to Esau: Thus said thy servant Jacob, With Laban I have sojourned, and I tarry until now; 5 and I have ox, and ass, flock, and man-servant, and maid-servant, and I send to declare to my lord, to find grace in his eyes.' 6 And the messengers turn back unto Jacob, saying, `We came in unto thy brother, unto Esau, and he also is coming to meet thee, and four hundred men with him;' 7 and Jacob feareth exceedingly, and is distressed, and he divideth the people who are with him, and the flock, and the herd, and the camels, into two camps, 8 and saith, `If Esau come in unto the one camp, and have smitten it—then the camp which is left hath been for an escape.'
9 And Jacob saith, `God of my father Abraham, and God of my father Isaac, Jehovah who saith unto me, Turn back to thy land, and to thy kindred, and I do good with thee: 10 I have been unworthy of all the kind acts, and of all the truth which Thou hast done with thy servant—for, with my staff I passed over this Jordan, and now I have become two camps. 11 `Deliver me, I pray Thee, from the hand of my brother, from the hand of Esau: for I am fearing him, less he come and have smitten me—mother beside sons; 12 and Thou—Thou hast said, I certainly do good with thee, and have set thy seed as the sand of the sea, which is not numbered because of the multitude.'
13 And he lodgeth there during that night, and taketh from that which is coming into his hand, a present for Esau his brother: 14 she-goats two hundred, and he-goats twenty, ewes two hundred, and rams twenty, 15 suckling camels and their young ones thirty, cows forty, and bullocks ten, she-asses twenty, and foals ten; 16 and he giveth into the hand of his servants, every drove by itself, and saith unto his servants, `Pass over before me, and a space ye do put between drove and drove.' 17 And he commandeth the first, saying, `When Esau my brother meeteth thee, and hath asked thee, saying, Whose art thou? and whither goest thou? and whose are these before thee? 18 then thou hast said, Thy servant Jacob's: it is a present sent to my lord, to Esau; and lo, he also is behind us.' 19 And he commandeth also the second, also the third, also all who are going after the droves, saying, `According to this manner do ye speak unto Esau in your finding him, 20 and ye have said also, Lo, thy servant Jacob is behind us;' for he said, `I pacify his face with the present which is going before me, and afterwards I see his face; it may be he lifteth up my face;' 21 and the present passeth over before his face, and he hath lodged during that night in the camp. 22 And he riseth in that night, and taketh his two wives, and his two maid-servants, and his eleven children, and passeth over the passage of Jabbok; 23 and he taketh them, and causeth them to pass over the brook, and he causeth that which he hath to pass over.
24 And Jacob is left alone, and one wrestleth with him till the ascending of the dawn; 25 and he seeth that he is not able for him, and he cometh against the hollow of his thigh, and the hollow of Jacob's thigh is disjointed in his wrestling with him; 26 and he saith, `Send me away, for the dawn hath ascended:' and he saith, `I send thee not away, except thou hast blessed me.' 27 And he saith unto him, `What is thy name?' and he saith, `Jacob.' 28 And he saith, `Thy name is no more called Jacob, but Israel; for thou hast been a prince with God and with men, and dost prevail.' 29 And Jacob asketh, and saith, `Declare, I pray thee, thy name;' and he saith, `Why is this, thou askest for My name?' and He blesseth him there. 30 And Jacob calleth the name of the place Peniel: for `I have seen God face unto face, and my life is delivered;' 31 and the sun riseth on him when he hath passed over Penuel, and he is halting on his thigh; 32 therefore the sons of Israel do not eat the sinew which shrank, which is on the hollow of the thigh, unto this day, because He came against the hollow of Jacob's thigh, against the sinew which shrank.
JuliaSmith(i) 1 And Jacob went on his way and the messengers of God met with him. 2 And Jacob will say when seeing them, This the camp of God: and he will call the name of that place the camps. 3 And Jacob will send messengers before his face to Esau his brother, to the land of Seir, the field of Adam. 4 And he will command them, saying, Thus shall ye say to my lord to Esau, Thus thy servant Jacob said, With Laban I sojourned and lingered till now. 5 And there will be to me ox and ass, sheep and servant, and maid; and I shall send to announce to my lord to find grace in thine eyes. 6 And the messengers will turn back to Jacob, saying, We came to thy brother, to Esau, and also he came to thy meeting, and four hundred men with him. 7 And Jacob will be greatly afraid and it will press upon him: and he will divide the people which were with him, and the sheep and the oxen, and the camels, into two camps. 8 And he will say, If Esau shall come to the one camp and smite it, and the remaining camp was to escape. 9 And Jacob will say, God of my father Abraham, and God of my father Isaak, Jehovah having said to me, Turn back to thy land and to thy family, and I will do well with thee. 10 I was little from all the kindness and from all the truth which thou didst to thy servant; for with my rod I passed over this Jordan, and now I became into two camps. 11 Take me away now from the hand of my brother, from the hand of Esau, for I am afraid of him, lest he shall come and smite me, the mother upon the sons. 12 And thou saidst, Doing well I will do well with thee, and I set thy seed as the sand of the sea, which shall not be counted for multitude. 13 And he will pass the night them in that night, and he will take from what came into his hand, a gift to Esau his brother. 14 Two hundred she-goats, and twenty he-goats, two hundred sheep and twenty rams. 15 Camels giving suck, and their young, thirty; forty heifers and ten bulls; twenty she-asses and ten foals. 16 And he will give into the hand of his servants a flock, a flock itself alone; and he will say to his servants, Pass over before me, and ye shall put enlargement between flock and between flock. 17 And he will command the first, saying, When Esau my brother shall meet thee and ask thee saying, To whom thou? and whither wilt thou go? and to whom these before thee? 18 And thou saying, To thy servant, to Jacob: this a gift sent to my lord to Esau, and behold also he is behind us. 19 And he will command also the second, also the third, also all going behind the flocks, saying, According to this word shall ye speak to Esau in your finding him. 20 And ye said, Also behold thy servant Jacob behind us. For he said, I will appease his face with the gift going before me, and after this I will see his face; perhaps he will receive my face. 21 And the gift will pass over before his face, and he remained in that night in the camp. 22 And he will rise in that night and take his two wives and his two maids, and his eleven sons, and he will pass over the passage of Jabbok. 23 Andhewill take them and will cause them to pass through the torrent, and he will cause to pass through what is to him. 24 And Jacob will be left alone by himself, and a man will wrestle with him till the ascending of the morning. 25 And he will see thathewill not prevail over him and he will touch upon the hollow of his thigh; and the hollow of Jacob's thigh will be alienated in his wrestling with him. 26 And he will say, Send me away, for the morning ascended: and he will say, I will not send thee away, unless thou didst bless me. 27 And he will say to him, What thy name? and he will say, Jacob. 28 And he will say, Thy name shall no more be said Jacob, but Israel, for thou wert a prince with God and with men, and thou shalt prevail. 29 And Jacob will ask and will say, Announce now, thy name: and he will say, For what this thou wilt ask for my name? and he will bless him there. 30 And Jacob will call the name of the place, the face of God: for I saw God lace to face, and my soul shall be saved. 31 And the sun will rise to him when he passed through the face of God, and he limped upon his thigh. 32 For this, the sons of Israel will not eat the sinew which dried up which is upon the hollow of the thigh, even till this day; for he touched upon the hollow of Jacob's thigh in the sinew which dried up.
Darby(i) 1 And Jacob went on his way; and the angels of God met him. 2 And when Jacob saw them he said, This is the camp of God. And he called the name of that place Mahanaim. 3 And Jacob sent messengers before his face to Esau his brother, into the land of Seir, the fields of Edom. 4 And he commanded them, saying, Thus shall ye speak to my lord, to Esau: Thy servant Jacob speaks thus -- With Laban have I sojourned and tarried until now; 5 and I have oxen, and asses, sheep, and bondmen, and bondwomen; and I have sent to tell my lord, that I may find favour in thine eyes. 6 And the messengers returned to Jacob, saying, We came to thy brother, to Esau; and he also is coming to meet thee, and four hundred men with him. 7 Then Jacob was greatly afraid, and was distressed; and he divided the people that were with him, and the sheep and the cattle and the camels, into two troops. 8 And he said, If Esau come to the one troop and smite it, then the other troop which is left shall escape. 9 And Jacob said, God of my father Abraham, and God of my father Isaac, Jehovah, who saidst unto me: Return into thy country and to thy kindred, and I will do thee good, 10 -- I am too small for all the loving-kindness and all the faithfulness that thou hast shewn unto thy servant; for with my staff I passed over this Jordan, and now I am become two troops. 11 Deliver me, I pray thee, from the hand of my brother, from the hand of Esau; for I fear him, lest he come and smite me, [and] the mother with the children. 12 And thou saidst, I will certainly deal well with thee, and make thy seed as the sand of the sea, which cannot be numbered for multitude. 13 And he lodged there that night; and took of what came to his hand a gift for Esau his brother -- 14 two hundred she-goats, and twenty he-goats; two hundred ewes, and twenty rams; 15 thirty milch camels with their colts; forty kine, and ten bulls; twenty she-asses, and ten young asses. 16 And he delivered [them] into the hand of his servants, every drove by itself; and he said to his servants, Go on before me, and put a space between drove and drove. 17 And he commanded the foremost, saying, When Esau my brother meets thee, and asks thee, saying, Whose art thou, and where goest thou, and whose are these before thee? 18 -- then thou shalt say, Thy servant Jacob`s: it is a gift sent to my lord, to Esau. And behold, he also is behind us. 19 And so commanded he the second, and the third, and all that followed the droves, saying, According to this word shall ye speak to Esau when ye find him. 20 And, moreover, ye shall say, Behold, thy servant Jacob is behind us. For he said, I will propitiate him with the gift that goes before me, and afterwards I will see his face: perhaps he will accept me. 21 And the gift went over before him; and he himself lodged that night in the camp. 22 And he rose up that night, and took his two wives, and his two maidservants, and his eleven sons, and passed over the ford of the Jabbok; 23 and he took them and led them over the river, and led over what he had. 24 And Jacob remained alone; and a man wrestled with him until the rising of the dawn. 25 And when he saw that he did not prevail against him, he touched the joint of his thigh; and the joint of Jacob`s thigh was dislocated as he wrestled with him. 26 And he said, Let me go, for the dawn ariseth. And he said, I will not let thee go except thou bless me. 27 And he said to him, What is thy name? And he said, Jacob. 28 And he said, Thy name shall not henceforth be called Jacob, but Israel; for thou hast wrestled with God, and with men, and hast prevailed. 29 And Jacob asked and said, Tell [me], I pray thee, thy name. And he said, How is it that thou askest after my name? And he blessed him there. 30 And Jacob called the name of the place Peniel -- For I have seen God face to face, and my life has been preserved. 31 And as he passed over Peniel, the sun rose upon him; and he limped upon his hip. 32 Therefore the children of Israel do not eat of the sinew that is over the joint of the thigh, to this day; because he touched the joint of Jacob`s thigh -- the sinew.
ERV(i) 1 And Jacob went on his way, and the angels of God met him. 2 And Jacob said when he saw them, This is God’s host: and he called the name of that place Mahanaim. 3 And Jacob sent messengers before him to Esau his brother unto the land of Seir, the field of Edom. 4 And he commanded them, saying, Thus shall ye say unto my lord Esau; Thus saith thy servant Jacob, I have sojourned with Laban, and stayed until now: 5 and I have oxen, and asses [and ]flocks, and menservants ard maidservants: and I have sent to tell my lord, that I may find grace in thy sight. 6 And the messengers returned to Jacob, saying, We came to thy brother Esau, and moreover he cometh to meet thee, and four hundred men with him. 7 Then Jacob was greatly afraid and was distressed: and he divided the people that was with him, and the flocks, and the herds, and the camels, into two companies; 8 and he said, If Esau come to the one company, and smite it, then the company which is left shall escape. 9 And Jacob said, O God of my father Abraham, and God of my father Isaac, O LORD, which saidst unto me, Return unto thy country, and to thy kindred, and I will do thee good: 10 I am not worthy of the least of all the mercies, and of all the truth, which thou hast shewed unto thy servant; for with my staff I passed over this Jordan; and now I am become two companies. 11 Deliver me, I pray thee, from the hand of my brother, from the hand of Esau: for I fear him, lest he come and smite me, the mother with the children. 12 And thou saidst, I will surely do thee good, and make thy seed as the sand of the sea, which cannot be numbered for multitude. 13 And he lodged there that night; and took of that which he had with him a present for Esau his brother; 14 two hundred she-goats and twenty he-goats, two hundred ewes and twenty rams, 15 thirty milch camels and their colts, forty kine and ten bulls, twenty she-asses and ten foals. 16 And he delivered them into the hand of his servants, every drove by itself; and said unto his servants, Pass over before me, and put a space betwixt drove and drove. 17 And he commanded the foremost, saying, When Esau my brother meeteth thee, and asketh thee, saying, Whose art thou? and whither goest thou? and whose are these before thee? 18 then thou shalt say, [They be ]thy servant Jacob’s; it is a present sent unto my lord Esau: and, behold, he also is behind us. 19 And he commanded also the second, and the third, and all that followed the droves, saying, On this manner shall ye speak unto Esau, when ye find him; 20 and ye shall say, Moreover, behold, thy servant Jacob is behind us. For he said, I will appease him with the present that goeth before me, and afterward I will see his face; peradventure he will accept me. 21 So the present passed over before him: and he himself lodged that night in the company. 22 And he rose up that night, and took his two wives, and his two handmaids, and his eleven children, and passed over the ford of Jabbok. 23 And he took them, and sent them over the stream, and sent over that he had. 24 And Jacob was left alone; and there wrestled a man with him until the breaking of the day. 25 And when he saw that he prevailed not against him, he touched the hollow of his thigh; and the hollow of Jacob’s thigh was strained, as he wrestled with him. 26 And he said, Let me go, for the day breaketh. And he said, I will not let thee go, except thou bless me. 27 And he said unto him, What is thy name? And he said, Jacob. 28 And he said, Thy name shall be called no more Jacob, but Israel: for thou hast striven with God and with men, and hast prevailed. 29 And Jacob asked him, and said, Tell me, I pray thee, thy name. And he said, Wherefore is it that thou dost ask after my name? And he blessed him there. 30 And Jacob called the name of the place Peniel: for, [said he], I have seen God face to face, and my life is preserved. 31 And the sun rose upon him as he passed over Penuel, and he halted upon his thigh. 32 Therefore the children of Israel eat not the sinew of the hip which is upon the hollow of the thigh, unto this day: because he touched the hollow of Jacob’s thigh in the sinew of the hip.

For he said, I will appease him with the present that goeth before me, and afterward I will see his face; peradventure he will accept me. 21 So the present passed over before him: and he himself lodged that night in the company. 22 And he rose up that night, and took his two wives, and his two handmaids, and his eleven children, and passed over the ford of the Jabbok. 23 And he took them, and sent them over the stream, and sent over that which he had. 24 And Jacob was left alone; and there wrestled a man with him until the breaking of the day. 25 And when he saw that he prevailed not against him, he touched the hollow of his thigh; and the hollow of Jacobs thigh was strained, as he wrestled with him. 30 And Jacob called the name of the place Peniel: for, said he, I have seen God face to face, and my life is preserved. 31 And the sun rose upon him as he passed over Penuel, and he limped upon his thigh. 32 Therefore the children of Israel eat not the sinew of the hip which is upon the hollow of the thigh, unto this day: because he touched the hollow of Jacobs thigh in the sinew of the hip.

17 H6680 And he commanded H7223 the foremost, H559 saying, H6215 When Esau H251 my brother H6298 meeteth thee, H7592 and asketh thee, H559 saying, H3212 Whose art thou? and whither goest H6440 thou? and whose are these before thee?

29 H3290 And Jacob H7592 asked H559 him, and said, H5046 Tell H8034 me, I pray thee, thy name. H559 And he said, H2088 Wherefore is it H7592 that thou dost ask H8034 after my name? H1288 And he blessed him there.
30 H3290 And Jacob H7121 called H8034 the name H4725 of the place H6439 Peniel: H7200 for, said he, I have seen H430 God H6440 face H6440 to face, H5315 and my life H5337 is preserved.
31 H8121 And the sun H2224 rose H5674 upon him as he passed over H6439 Penuel, H6760 and he limped H3409 upon his thigh.

Rotherham(i) 1 When, Jacob, had gone on his way, there met him, messengers of God. 2 And Jacob said, when he saw them, the camp of God, is this! So he called the name of that place, Mahanaim. 3 Then did Jacob send messengers before him unto Esau his brother, to the land of Seir, the field of Edom. 4 And he commanded them, saying, Thus, shall ye say to my lord to Esau, Thus, saith thy servant Jacob, With Laban, have I sojourned, and tarried until now: 5 And I have oxen and asses, flocks and men-servants, and maid-servants, So I must needs send to tell my lord, that I might find favour in thine eyes. 6 And the messengers returned unto Jacob, saying,—We came in unto thy brother unto Esau, moreover also he is on his way to meet thee, and four hundred men with him. 7 Then was Jacob greatly afraid, and in distress. So he divided the people that were with him and the flocks and the herds and the camels into two camps, 8 And he said. Should Esau come upon the one camp, and smite it, yet shall the camp that is left escape. 9 And Jacob said, God of my father Abraham, and God of my father Isaac,—Yahweh, who wast saying unto me,—Return to thy land and to thy kindred that I may deal well with thee: 10 I am too small for all the lovingkindnesses and for all the faithfulness, which thou hast done unto thy servant,—For with my staff, passed I over this Jordan, But, now, have I become two camps. 11 Deliver me I pray thee out of the hand of my brother out of the hand of Esau, for I, am afraid of him, lest he come in and smite mother as well as sons 12 But, thou thyself, saidst,—I wilt deal well with thee. So will I make thy seed as the sand of the sea, which is not to be counted, for multitude. 13 And he tarried there that night, and took of that which came to his hand a present for Esau his brother: 14 She-goats, two hundred; And he-goats, twenty; Ewes, two hundred; And rams, twenty; 15 Milch camels, with their colts, thirty; Cows, forty; And bulls, ten; She-asses, twenty; And 16 And he gave them into the hand of his Servants, each drove by itself, and said unto his servants—Pass over before me, and, a breathing-space, shall ye put betwixt drove and drove. 17 And be commanded the first one saying: When Esau my brother shall fall in with thee, and shall ask thee, saying Whose art thou? and whither wouldst thou go? and to whom belong these before thee? 18 then shalt thou say, To thy servant Jacob: It is, a present, sent to my lord, to Esau; And behold he himself also is behind us, 19 And he commanded the second also, and the third yea all that were going on behind the droves, saying,—According to this word, shall ye speak unto Esau, when ye find him. 20 Then shall ye say, Also, lo! thy servant Jacob is behind us. For he said: I must pacify him with the present that goeth on before me. And, after that, will I see his face: Peradventure he will accept me. 21 So the present passed over before him,—whereas he himself tarried that night in the camp. 22 And he arose in that night and took his two wives, and his two handmaids, and his eleven sons,—and pressed over the ford of Jabbok. 23 So he took them, and sent them over the brook,—and sent over that which he had. 24 And Jacob was left alone,—and there wrestled a man with him, until the uprisings of the dawn. 25 And when he saw, that he prevailed not against him, he touched the hollow of his thigh,—and the hollow of Jacob’s thigh was put out of joint, as he wrestled with him. 26 Then said he—Let me go, for uprisen hath the dawn. And he said: I will not let thee go, except thou have blessed me 27 Then he said unto him—What is thy name? And he said—Jacob. 28 Then he said—Not Jacob, shall thy name be called any more, but Israel,—For thou hast contended with God and with men and hast prevailed. 29 Then asked Jacob and said, Do, I pray thee, tell me thy name! And he said—Wherefore now, shouldest thou ask for my name? And he blessed him there, 30 So Jacob called the name of the place Peniel; For I saw God face to face; and my soul was delivered, 31 And the sun rose on him as soon as he had passed over Penuel,—he, moreover was halting upon his thigh, 32 For this cause, the sons of Israel eat not of the nerve of the large hip-sinew, which is by the hollow of the thigh, until this day,—because he touched the hollow of the thigh of Jacob, in the nerve of the hip-sinew.
CLV(i) 1 And Jacob goes his way. And seeing in a vision, he sees the camp of the Elohim encamped. And coming upon him are messengers of the Elohim. 2 And saying is Jacob as he sees them, "The camp of the Elohim is this!"And calling is he the name of that place Mahanaim. 3 And sending is Jacob messengers before him to Esau, his brother, to the land of Seir, the field of Edom. 4 And instructing them is he, saying, "Thus shall you say to my lord, to Esau, `Thus says your servant Jacob: With Laban I sojourn and it delayed me till now. 5 And mine are becoming bulls and asses and a flock, and servants and maids. And sending am I to tell my lord Esau that your servant finds grace in your eyes.. 6 And returning are the messengers to Jacob, saying, "We came to your brother, Esau, and, moreover, going is he to meet you, and four hundred men with him. 7 And fearing is Jacob exceedingly, and it is distressing to him. And dividing is he the people who are with him, and the flock and the herd and the camels, into two camps. 8 And saying is Jacob, "Should Esau be coming to one camp and smite it, yet the remaining camp will come to be delivered. 9 And saying is Jacob, "Elohim of my forefather Abraham and Elohim of my father Isaac, Yahweh Who said to me, `Return to your land and to your kindred and I will do good to you.. 10 Smaller am I than all the kindnesses and than all the truth which You do to Your servant, for with my stick I crossed this Jordan, and now I have become two camps. 11 Rescue me, pray, from the hand of my brother, from the hand of Esau, for I fear him, lest he comes and smites me, and the mother with the sons. 12 And you said, `Good, yea, good will I do to you, and I make your seed as the sand of the sea, which is not being numbered for multitude.. 13 And lodging there is he in that night. And taking is he, of that which is coming to his hand, a present offering, and sends it to Esau, his brother. 14 Two hundred she goats, and twenty bucks, two hundred ewes, and twenty rams, 15 thirty suckler camels and their foals, forty young cows and ten bulls, twenty she-asses, and ten colts. 16 And giving them is he into the hand of his servants, drove by drove alone. And saying is he to his servants, "Pass before me, and place an interval between drove and drove. 17 And instructing is he the first, saying, "In case Esau, my brother, is encountering you, and he asks you, saying, `Whose are you? And whither are you going? And whose are these before you?. 18 Then you say, `To your servant, to Jacob. A present offering is it, sent to my lord, to Esau. And, behold! He, moreover, is behind us.. 19 And instructing is he the first; moreover, the second; and, moreover, the third; and, moreover, all those who are going after the droves, saying, "According to this word shall you speak to Esau, when you find him. 20 And say, moreover, `Behold! Your servant Jacob comes after us.' For,said he, "a propitiatory shelter am I making before his face with the present offering which is going before me, and afterward will I see his face. Perhaps he will lift up my face. 21 And passing is the present offering on before his face. Yet he lodges in that night in the camp. 22 And rising is he in that night and taking his two wives and his two maids and his eleven children, and is crossing the crossing of the Jabbok. 23 And taking them is he and is passing them over the watercourse. And passing over is he all which is his. 24 And left is Jacob alone. And wrestling is a Man with him till the ascending of the dawn. 25 And seeing is he that he does not prevail against Him. Yet touching is He the palm of his thighbone. And strained is the palm of Jacob's thighbone in his wrestling with Him. 26 And saying is He to him, "Send Me away, for the dawn ascends. And saying is he, "Not letting You go am I save You bless me. 27 And saying is He to him, "What is your name? And saying is he, "Jacob. 28 And saying is He to him, "Not Jacob shall your name be called longer, but rather Israel is your name. For upright are you with the Elohim and with mortals, and are prevailing. 29 And asking is Jacob and saying, "Tell me, pray, your name. And saying is He, "Why is this that you are asking for My name? And blessing him is He there. 30 And calling is Jacob the name of the place Peniel, "for I see the Elohim face to face, and rescued is my soul. 31 And irradiating him is the sun as he passes Peniel. Yet he is limping on his thigh. 32 Therefore not eating are the sons of Israel the sinew which was benumbed, which is on the palm of the thighbone, till this day, for He touched the palm of Jacob's thighbone at the sinew benumbed.
BBE(i) 1 And on his way Jacob came face to face with the angels of God. 2 And when he saw them he said, This is the army of God: so he gave that place the name of Mahanaim. 3 Now Jacob sent servants before him to Esau, his brother, in the land of Seir, the country of Edom; 4 And he gave them orders to say these words to Esau: Your servant Jacob says, Till now I have been living with Laban: 5 And I have oxen and asses and flocks and men-servants and women-servants: and I have sent to give my lord news of these things so that I may have grace in his eyes. 6 When the servants came back they said, We have seen your brother Esau and he is coming out to you, and four hundred men with him. 7 Then Jacob was in great fear and trouble of mind: and he put all the people and the flocks and the herds and the camels into two groups; 8 And said, If Esau, meeting one group, makes an attack on them, the others will get away safely. 9 Then Jacob said, O God of my father Abraham, the God of my father Isaac, the Lord who said to me, Go back to your country and your family and I will be good to you: 10 I am less than nothing in comparison with all your mercies and your faith to me your servant; for with only my stick in my hand I went across Jordan, and now I have become two armies. 11 Be my saviour from the hand of Esau, my brother: for my fear is that he will make an attack on me, putting to death mother and child. 12 And you said, Truly, I will be good to you, and make your seed like the sand of the sea which may not be numbered. 13 Then he put up his tent there for the night; and from among his goods he took, as an offering for his brother Esau, 14 Two hundred she-goats and twenty he-goats, two hundred females and twenty males from the sheep, 15 Thirty camels with their young ones, forty cows, ten oxen, twenty asses, and ten young asses. 16 These he gave to his servants, every herd by itself, and he said to his servants, Go on before me, and let there be a space between one herd and another. 17 And he gave orders to the first, saying, When my brother Esau comes to you and says, Whose servant are you, and where are you going, and whose are these herds? 18 Then say to him, These are your servant Jacob's; they are an offering for my lord, for Esau; and he himself is coming after us. 19 And he gave the same orders to the second and the third and to all those who were with the herds, saying, This is what you are to say to Esau when you see him; 20 And you are to say further, Jacob, your servant, is coming after us. For he said to himself, I will take away his wrath by the offering which I have sent on, and then I will come before him: it may be that I will have grace in his eyes. 21 So the servants with the offerings went on in front, and he himself took his rest that night in the tents with his people. 22 And in the night he got up, and taking with him his two wives and the two servant-women and his eleven children, he went over the river Jabbok. 23 He took them and sent them over the stream with all he had. 24 Then Jacob was by himself; and a man was fighting with him till dawn. 25 But when the man saw that he was not able to overcome Jacob, he gave him a blow in the hollow part of his leg, so that his leg was damaged. 26 And he said to him, Let me go now, for the dawn is near. But Jacob said, I will not let you go till you have given me your blessing. 27 Then he said, What is your name? And he said, Jacob. 28 And he said, Your name will no longer be Jacob, but Israel: for in your fight with God and with men you have overcome. 29 Then Jacob said, What is your name? And he said, What is my name to you? Then he gave him a blessing. 30 And Jacob gave that place the name of Peniel, saying, I have seen God face to face, and still I am living. 31 And while he was going past Peniel, the sun came up. And he went with unequal steps because of his damaged leg. 32 For this reason the children of Israel, even today, never take that muscle in the hollow of the leg as food, because the hollow of Jacob's leg was touched.
MKJV(i) 1 And Jacob went on his way, and the angels of God met him. 2 And when Jacob saw them he said, This is God's camp. And he called the name of that place Two Camps. 3 And Jacob sent messengers before him to Esau his brother, to the land of Seir, the country of Edom. 4 And he commanded them, saying, So shall you speak to my lord Esau: Your servant Jacob says thus, I have lived with Laban and stayed until now. 5 And I have oxen and asses, flocks, and menservants, and slave women. And I have sent to tell my lord, that I may find grace in your sight. 6 And the messengers returned to Jacob saying, We came to your brother Esau, and also he comes to meet you, and four hundred men with him. 7 Then Jacob was greatly afraid and distressed, and he divided the people with him, and the flocks and herds, and the camels, into two bands. 8 And he said, If Esau comes to the one company and strikes it, then the other company which is left shall escape. 9 And Jacob said, Oh God of my father Abraham, and God of my father Isaac, Jehovah, who said to me, Return to your country and to your kindred, and I will deal well with you: 10 I am not worthy of the least of all the mercies and of all the truth which You have done to Your servant. For with my staff I passed over this Jordan, and now I have become two bands. 11 Deliver me, I pray You, from the hand of my brother, from the hand of Esau. For I fear him, lest he come and strike me, from mother to sons. 12 And You said, I will surely do you good, and make your seed as the sand of the sea, which cannot be numbered for multitude. 13 And he lodged there that night. And he took of that which came to his hand, a present for Esau his brother 14 two hundred she-goats, twenty he-goats, two hundred ewes, and twenty rams, 15 thirty milk camels with their colts, forty cows and ten bulls, twenty she-asses and ten foals. 16 And he delivered into the hands of his servants, every drove by themselves. And he said to his servants, Pass over in front of me and put a space between drove and drove. 17 And he commanded the foremost, saying, When Esau my brother meets you, and asks you saying, To whom do you belong? and, Where do you go? And whose are these before you? 18 Then you shall say, Your servant Jacob's. It is a present sent to my lord Esau. And, behold, he also is behind us. 19 And so he commanded the second and the third, and all that followed the droves, saying, In this way you shall speak to Esau when you find him. 20 And also you shall say, Behold, your servant Jacob is behind us. For he said, I will appease him with the present that goes before me, and afterward I will see his face. Perhaps he will accept me. 21 And the present went over before him. And he himself lodged that night in the camp. 22 And he rose up that night, and took his two wives, and his two slave women, and his eleven sons, and passed over the ford Jabbok. 23 And he took them, and sent them over the stream, and sent over what he had. 24 And Jacob was left alone. And a Man wrestled there with him until the breaking of the day. 25 And when He saw that He did not prevail against him, He touched the hollow of his thigh. And the hollow of Jacob's thigh was out of joint as he wrestled with Him. 26 And He said, Let Me go, for the day breaks. And he said, I will not let You go except You bless me. 27 And He said to him, What is your name? And he said, Jacob. 28 And He said, Your name shall no longer be called Jacob, but Israel; for like a prince you have power with God and with men, and have prevailed. 29 And Jacob asked and said, I pray You, reveal Your name. And He said, Why do you ask after My name? And He blessed him there. 30 And Jacob called the name of the place Face of God; for I have seen God face to face, and my life is preserved. 31 And as he passed over Penuel the sun rose upon him, and he limped upon his thigh. 32 Therefore the sons of Israel do not eat of the sinew of the thigh, which is on the hip-socket, until this day, because He touched Jacob's hip-socket, the sinew of the thigh.
LITV(i) 1 And Jacob went on his way, and the angels of God met him. 2 And when he saw them, Jacob said, This is the camp of God. And he called the name of that place, Refuge. 3 And Jacob sent messengers before his face to his brother Esau, to the land of Seir, the field of Edom. 4 And he commanded them, saying, You shall say to my lord, to Esau: Your servant Jacob says this: I have sojourned with Laban and remained until now. 5 And it is mine to have oxen, and asses, flocks, and slaves and slave-girls are mine. And I have sent to tell my lord, to find favor in your eyes. 6 And the messengers came back to Jacob, saying, We came to your brother Esau, and also he is coming to meet you, and four hundred men are with him. 7 And Jacob was afraid, and he was very distressed. And he divided the people with him, and the flocks, and the herds, and the camels, into two camps. 8 And he said, If Esau comes to the one company and strikes it, then it will be, the company that is left shall escape. 9 And Jacob said, Oh God of my father Abraham and God of my father Isaac, Jehovah, who said to me, Go back to your land and to your kindred and I will deal well with you. 10 I am not worthy of all the mercies and all the truth which You have done for Your servant, for I passed over this Jordan with my staff, and now I have become two companies. 11 Deliver me, I pray, from the hand of my brother, from the hand of Esau; for I fear him, lest he come and strike me, mother to sons. 12 And You said, I will surely deal well with you, and I will make your seed like the sand of the sea, which cannot be numbered for multitude. 13 And he remained there that night. And he took a present from what came into his hand, for his brother Esau: 14 two hundred she-goats, twenty he-goats, two hundred rams, 15 thirty nursing camels with their thirty colts, forty cows and ten bulls, twenty she-asses and ten young asses. 16 And he gave into the hand of his slaves every drove by itself. And he said to his slaves, Pass over before my face and put a space between drove and drove. 17 And he commanded the first ones, saying, When my brother Esau meets you and asks, saying, Whose are you, and where do you go, and whose are these before your face? 18 Then you will say, Your servant Jacob's. It is a present sent to my lord, to Esau; and, behold, also he is behind us. 19 And he also commanded the second, also the third, even all the ones going after the droves, saying, You shall speak this word to Esau when you find him. 20 And you shall also say, Behold, your servant Jacob is behind us. For he said, I will cover his face by the present, the one going before my face, and afterward I will see his face; perhaps he will lift up my face. 21 And the present passed before his face, and he remained in the camp that night. 22 And he rose up that night and took his two wives, and his two slave-girls, and his eleven children. And he passed over the ford Jabbok. 23 And he took them and sent them over the stream, and sent over that which was his. 24 And Jacob was left alone. And a Man wrestled with him until the ascending of the dawn. 25 And He saw that He had not prevailed against him. And He touched on his hip socket, and Jacob's hip socket was unhinged as he wrestled with Him. 26 And He said, Send me away, for the dawn has ascended. And he said, I will not let you go unless You bless me. 27 And He said to him, What is your name? And he said, Jacob. 28 And He said, Your name shall no longer be called Jacob, but Israel, because you have wrestled with God and with men, and have prevailed. 29 And Jacob asked and said, Please reveal Your name. And He said, Why this that you ask about My name? And He blessed him there. 30 And Jacob called the name of the place Penuel, because I saw God face to face, and my life is delivered. 31 And the sun rose on him as he passed over Penuel, and he was limping on his thigh. 32 On account of this the sons of Israel do not eat the sinew of the thigh that is on the hip socket until this day, because He touched on Jacob's hip socket, on the sinew of the thigh.

ANGELS OF ELOHIM ENCOUNTER YAAQOV
And Yaaqov goes on his way and the angels of Elohim encounter him: 2 and when Yaaqov sees them, he says, This is Camp Elohim! - and he calls the name of that place Machanayim/Double Camp. 3 And Yaaqov sends angels at the face of Esav his brother to the land of Seir, the field of Edom: 4 and he misvahs them, saying, Say thus to my adoni Esav: Your servant Yaaqov says thus: I sojourned with Laban and delayed there until now: 5 and I have oxen and he burros, flocks and servants and maids: and I send to tell my adoni, to find charism in your eyes. 6 And the angels return to Yaaqov, saying, We came to your brother Esav and he also comes to meet you with four hundred men. 7 And Yaaqov awes mightily and is depressed: and he halves the people with him and the flocks and oxen and the camels into two camps; 8 and says, If Esav comes to the one camp and smites it, then the other camp which survives escapes. 9 And Yaaqov says, O Elohim of my father Abraham and Elohim of my father Yischaq, Yah Veh who says to me, Return to your land and to your kindred and I well-please you: 10 I am less than the least of all the mercies and of all the truth, you worked to your servant; for with my staff I passed over this Yarden; and now I become two camps: 11 rescue me, I beseech you, from the hand of my brother, from the hand of Esav: for I awe him, lest he comes and smites me and the mother with the sons. 12 And you - you say, In well-pleasing, I well-please you and set your seed as the sand of the sea which cannot be scribed for abundance. 13 And he stays there overnight that same night; and takes of what comes to his hand - an offering for Esav his brother: 14 two hundred she goats and twenty he goats two hundred ewes and twenty rams 15 thirty suckling camels with their sons forty heifer and ten bullocks twenty she burros and ten foals: 16 and he gives them into the hand of his servants, drove by drove; and says to his servants, Pass over from my face and put a respiration between drove and between drove. 17 And he misvahs the first, saying, When Esav my brother meets you and asks you, saying, Whose are you? And where go you? And whose are these at your face? 18 Then you say, Of your servant Yaaqov - an offering sent to my adoni Esav: and behold, he also is behind us. 19 And thus he misvahs the second and the third and all who come after the droves, saying, Word this word to Esav, when you find him: 20 and also say, Behold, your servant Yaaqov is behind us: for he says, I kapar/atone at his face with the offering that goes at my face and afterward, I see his face: perhaps he lifts at my face. 21 So the offering passes from his face: and he stays overnight that night in the camp: 22 and he rises that night and takes his two women and his two maids and his eleven children and passes over the ford Yabboq: 23 and he takes them and passes them over the wadi and passes over what he has.
YAAQOV WRESTLES
24 And Yaaqov remains alone; and there a man wrestles with him until the ascending of the dawn: 25 and when he sees that he prevails not against him, he touches the hollow of his flank; and the hollow of the flank of Yaaqov dislocates as he wrestles with him: 26 and he says, Send me away, for the dawn ascends. And he says, I send you not away, unless you bless me.
YAAQOV NAMED YISRA EL 27 And he says to him, What is your name? And he says, Yaaqov. 28 And he says, Your name is said no more Yaaqov, but Yisra El: for you prevail with Elohim and with men - and prevail. 29 And Yaaqov asks him and says, Tell me, I beseech you, your name. And he says, Why ask you my name? - and he blesses him there. 30 And Yaaqov calls the name of the place Peni El: for I saw Elohim face to face and my soul is rescued. 31 And as he passes over Peni El the sun rises on him and he limps on his flank. 32 Therefore, to this day, the sons of Yisra El eat not of the sinew which shriveled, which is on the hollow of the flank: because he touched the hollow of the flank of Yaaqov in the sinew that shriveled.

For he said, I will appease him with the present that goes before me, and afterward I will see his face. Perhaps he will accept me. 21 So the present passed over before him, and he himself lodged that night in the company. 22 And he rose up that night, and took his two wives, and his two handmaids, and his eleven children, and passed over the ford of the Jabbok. 23 And he took them, and sent them over the stream, and sent over that which he had. 24 And Jacob was left alone, and a man wrestled with him until the breaking of the day. 25 And when he saw that he did not prevail against him, he touched the hollow of his thigh, and the hollow of Jacob's thigh was strained as he wrestled with him. 26 And he said, Let me go, for the day breaks. And he said, I will not let thee go unless thou bless me. 27 And he said to him, What is thy name? And he said, Jacob. 28 And he said, Thy name shall no more be called Jacob, but Israel, for thou have striven with God and with men, and have prevailed. 29 And Jacob asked him, and said, Tell me, I pray thee, thy name. And he said, Why is it that thou ask for my name? And he blessed him there. 30 And Jacob called the name of the place Peniel, for, I have seen God face to face, and my life is preserved. 31 And the sun rose upon him as he passed over Penuel [Peniel], and he limped upon his thigh. 32 Therefore the sons of Israel do not eat the sinew of the hip which is upon the hollow of the thigh, to this day, because he touched the hollow of Jacob's thigh in the sinew of the hip.
