1 Chronicles 19

  1 H310 Now it came to pass after this H5176 , that Nahash H4428 the king H1121 of the children H5983 of Ammon H4191 died [H8799]   H1121 , and his son H4427 reigned [H8799]   in his stead.

  2 H1732 And David H559 said [H8799]   H6213 , I will shew [H8799]   H2617 kindness H2586 unto Hanun H1121 the son H5176 of Nahash H1 , because his father H6213 shewed [H8804]   H2617 kindness H1732 to me. And David H7971 sent [H8799]   H4397 messengers H5162 to comfort [H8763]   H1 him concerning his father H5650 . So the servants H1732 of David H935 came [H8799]   H776 into the land H1121 of the children H5983 of Ammon H2586 to Hanun H5162 , to comfort [H8763]   him.

  3 H8269 But the princes H1121 of the children H5983 of Ammon H559 said [H8799]   H2586 to Hanun H5869 , Thinkest H1732 thou that David H3513 doth honour [H8764]   H1 thy father H7971 , that he hath sent [H8804]   H5162 comforters [H8764]   H5650 unto thee? are not his servants H935 come [H8804]   H2713 unto thee for to search [H8800]   H2015 , and to overthrow [H8800]   H7270 , and to spy out [H8763]   H776 the land?

  4 H2586 Wherefore Hanun H3947 took [H8799]   H1732 David's H5650 servants H1548 , and shaved [H8762]   H3772 them, and cut off [H8799]   H4063 their garments H2677 in the midst H4667 hard by their buttocks H7971 , and sent them away [H8762]  .

  5 H3212 Then there went [H8799]   H5046 certain, and told [H8686]   H1732 David H582 how the men H7971 were served. And he sent [H8799]   H7125 to meet [H8800]   H582 them: for the men H3966 were greatly H3637 ashamed [H8737]   H4428 . And the king H559 said [H8799]   H3427 , Tarry [H8798]   H3405 at Jericho H2206 until your beards H6779 be grown [H8762]   H7725 , and then return [H8804]  .

  6 H1121 And when the children H5983 of Ammon H7200 saw [H8799]   H887 that they had made themselves odious [H8694]   H1732 to David H2586 , Hanun H1121 and the children H5983 of Ammon H7971 sent [H8799]   H505 a thousand H3603 talents H3701 of silver H7936 to hire [H8800]   H7393 them chariots H6571 and horsemen H763 out of Mesopotamia H758 , and out of Syriamaachah H4601   H6678 , and out of Zobah.

  7 H7936 So they hired [H8799]   H7970 thirty H8147 and two H505 thousand H7393 chariots H4428 , and the king H4601 of Maachah H5971 and his people H935 ; who came [H8799]   H2583 and pitched [H8799]   H6440 before H4311 Medeba H1121 . And the children H5983 of Ammon H622 gathered themselves together [H8738]   H5892 from their cities H935 , and came [H8799]   H4421 to battle.

  8 H1732 And when David H8085 heard [H8799]   H7971 of it, he sent [H8799]   H3097 Joab H6635 , and all the host H1368 of the mighty men.

  9 H1121 And the children H5983 of Ammon H3318 came out [H8799]   H4421 , and put the battle H6186 in array [H8799]   H6607 before the gate H5892 of the city H4428 : and the kings H935 that were come [H8804]   H7704 were by themselves in the field.

  10 H3097 Now when Joab H7200 saw [H8799]   H4421 that the battle H6440 was set against him before H268 and behind H977 , he chose out [H8799]   H977 of all the choice [H8803]   H3478 of Israel H6186 , and put them in array [H8799]   H7125 against [H8800]   H758 the Syrians.

  11 H3499 And the rest H5971 of the people H5414 he delivered [H8804]   H3027 unto the hand H52 of Abishai H251 his brother H6186 , and they set themselves in array [H8799]   H7125 against [H8800]   H1121 the children H5983 of Ammon.

  12 H559 And he said [H8799]   H758 , If the Syrians H2388 be too strong [H8799]   H8668 for me, then thou shalt help H1121 me: but if the children H5983 of Ammon H2388 be too strong [H8799]   H3467 for thee, then I will help [H8689]   thee.

  13 H2388 Be of good courage [H8798]   H2388 , and let us behave ourselves valiantly [H8691]   H5971 for our people H5892 , and for the cities H430 of our God H3068 : and let the LORD H6213 do [H8799]   H2896 that which is good H5869 in his sight.

  14 H3097 So Joab H5971 and the people H5066 that were with him drew nigh [H8799]   H6440 before H758 the Syrians H4421 unto the battle H5127 ; and they fled [H8799]   H6440 before him.

  15 H1121 And when the children H5983 of Ammon H7200 saw [H8804]   H758 that the Syrians H5127 were fled [H8804]   H5127 , they likewise fled [H8799]   H6440 before H52 Abishai H251 his brother H935 , and entered [H8799]   H5892 into the city H3097 . Then Joab H935 came [H8799]   H3389 to Jerusalem.

  16 H758 And when the Syrians H7200 saw [H8799]   H5062 that they were put to the worse [H8738]   H6440 before H3478 Israel H7971 , they sent [H8799]   H4397 messengers H3318 , and drew forth [H8686]   H758 the Syrians H5676 that were beyond H5104 the river H7780 : and Shophach H8269 the captain H6635 of the host H1928 of Hadarezer H6440 went before them.

  17 H5046 And it was told [H8714]   H1732 David H622 ; and he gathered [H8799]   H3478 all Israel H5674 , and passed over [H8799]   H3383 Jordan H935 , and came [H8799]   H6186 upon them, and set the battle in array [H8799]   H1732 against them. So when David H4421 had put the battle H6186 in array [H8799]   H7125 against [H8800]   H758 the Syrians H3898 , they fought [H8735]   with him.

  18 H758 But the Syrians H5127 fled [H8799]   H6440 before H3478 Israel H1732 ; and David H2026 slew [H8799]   H758 of the Syrians H7651 seven H505 thousand H7393 men which fought in chariots H705 , and forty H505 thousand H376 footmen H7273   H4191 , and killed [H8689]   H7780 Shophach H8269 the captain H6635 of the host.

  19 H5650 And when the servants H1928 of Hadarezer H7200 saw [H8799]   H5062 that they were put to the worse [H8738]   H6440 before H3478 Israel H7999 , they made peace [H8686]   H1732 with David H5647 , and became his servants [H8799]   H14 : neither would [H8804]   H758 the Syrians H3467 help [H8687]   H1121 the children H5983 of Ammon any more.
