Joshua 7:1-26 But the children of Israel committed a trespass in the accursed thing : for Achan , the son of Carmi , the son of Zabdi , the son of Zerah , of the tribe of Judah , took of the accursed thing : and the anger of the LORD was kindled against the children of Israel.

2 H3091 And Joshua H7971 sent [H8799] H582 men H3405 from Jericho H5857 to Ai H5973 , which is beside H1007 Bethaven H6924 , on the east side H1008 of Bethel H559 , and spake [H8799] H559 unto them, saying [H8800] H5927 , Go up [H8798] H7270 and view [H8761] H776 the country H582 . And the men H5927 went up [H8799] H7270 and viewed [H8762] H5857 Ai.

3 H7725 And they returned [H8799] H3091 to Joshua H559 , and said [H8799] H5971 unto him, Let not all the people H5927 go up [H8799] H7969 ; but let about two or three H505 thousand H376 men H5927 go up [H8799] H5221 and smite [H8686] H5857 Ai H5971 ; and make not all the people H3021 to labour [H8762] H4592 thither; for they are but few.

4 H5927 So there went up [H8799] H5971 thither of the people H7969 about three H505 thousand H376 men H5127 : and they fled [H8799] H6440 before H582 the men H5857 of Ai.

5 H582 And the men H5857 of Ai H5221 smote [H8686] H7970 of them about thirty H8337 and six H376 men H7291 : for they chased [H8799] H6440 them from before H8179 the gate H7671 even unto Shebarim H5221 , and smote [H8686] H4174 them in the going down H3824 : wherefore the hearts H5971 of the people H4549 melted [H8735] H4325 , and became as water.

6 H3091 And Joshua H7167 rent [H8799] H8071 his clothes H5307 , and fell [H8799] H776 to the earth H6440 upon his face H6440 before H727 the ark H3068 of the LORD H6153 until the eventide H2205 , he and the elders H3478 of Israel H5927 , and put [H8686] H6083 dust H7218 upon their heads.

7 H3091 And Joshua H559 said [H8799] H162 , Alas, O H136 Lord H3069 GOD H5674 , wherefore hast thou at all [H8687] H5674 brought H5971 this people H5674 over [H8689] H3383 Jordan H5414 , to deliver [H8800] H3027 us into the hand H567 of the Amorites H6 , to destroy [H8687] H3863 us? would to God H2974 we had been content [H8689] H3427 , and dwelt [H8799] H5676 on the other side H3383 Jordan!

9 H3669 For the Canaanites H3427 and all the inhabitants [H8802] H776 of the land H8085 shall hear [H8799] H5437 of it, and shall environ us round [H8738] H3772 , and cut off [H8689] H8034 our name H776 from the earth H6213 : and what wilt thou do [H8799] H1419 unto thy great H8034 name?

10 H3068 And the LORD H559 said [H8799] H3091 unto Joshua H6965 , Get thee up [H8798] H5307 ; wherefore liest [H8802] H6440 thou thus upon thy face?

11 H3478 Israel H2398 hath sinned [H8804] H5674 , and they have also transgressed [H8804] H1285 my covenant H6680 which I commanded [H8765] H3947 them: for they have even taken [H8804] H2764 of the accursed thing H1589 , and have also stolen [H8804] H3584 , and dissembled [H8765] H7760 also, and they have put [H8804] H3627 it even among their own stuff.

12 H1121 Therefore the children H3478 of Israel H3201 could [H8799] H6965 not stand [H8800] H6440 before H341 their enemies [H8802] H6437 , but turned [H8799] H6203 their backs H6440 before H341 their enemies [H8802] H2764 , because they were accursed H3254 : neither will I be with you any more [H8686] H3808 , except H8045 ye destroy [H8686] H2764 the accursed H7130 from among you.

13 H6965 Up [H8798] H6942 , sanctify [H8761] H5971 the people H559 , and say [H8804] H6942 , Sanctify [H8690] H4279 yourselves against to morrow H559 : for thus saith [H8804] H3068 the LORD H430 God H3478 of Israel H2764 , There is an accursed thing H7130 in the midst H3478 of thee, O Israel H3201 : thou canst [H8799] H6965 not stand [H8800] H6440 before H341 thine enemies [H8802] H5493 , until ye take away [H8687] H2764 the accursed thing H7130 from among you.

14 H1242 In the morning H7126 therefore ye shall be brought [H8738] H7626 according to your tribes H7626 : and it shall be, that the tribe H3068 which the LORD H3920 taketh [H8799] H7126 shall come [H8799] H4940 according to the families H4940 thereof; and the family H3068 which the LORD H3920 shall take [H8799] H7126 shall come [H8799] H1004 by households H1004 ; and the household H3068 which the LORD H3920 shall take [H8799] H7126 shall come [H8799] H1397 man H1397 by man.

15 H3920 And it shall be, that he that is taken [H8737] H2764 with the accursed thing H8313 shall be burnt [H8735] H784 with fire H5674 , he and all that he hath: because he hath transgressed [H8804] H1285 the covenant H3068 of the LORD H6213 , and because he hath wrought [H8804] H5039 folly H3478 in Israel.

16 H3091 So Joshua H7925 rose up early [H8686] H1242 in the morning H7126 , and brought [H8686] H3478 Israel H7626 by their tribes H7626 ; and the tribe H3063 of Judah H3920 was taken [H8735] :

17 H7126 And he brought [H8686] H4940 the family H3063 of Judah H3920 ; and he took [H8799] H4940 the family H2227 of the Zarhites H7126 : and he brought [H8686] H4940 the family H2227 of the Zarhites H1397 man H1397 by man H2067 ; and Zabdi H3920 was taken [H8735] :

18 H7126 And he brought [H8686] H1004 his household H1397 man H1397 by man H5912 ; and Achan H1121 , the son H3756 of Carmi H1121 , the son H2067 of Zabdi H1121 , the son H2226 of Zerah H4294 , of the tribe H3063 of Judah H3920 , was taken [H8735] .

19 H3091 And Joshua H559 said [H8799] H5912 unto Achan H1121 , My son H7760 , give [H8798] H3519 , I pray thee, glory H3068 to the LORD H430 God H3478 of Israel H5414 , and make [H8798] H8426 confession H5046 unto him; and tell [H8685] H6213 me now what thou hast done [H8804] H3582 ; hide [H8762] it not from me.

20 H5912 And Achan H6030 answered [H8799] H3091 Joshua H559 , and said [H8799] H546 , Indeed H2398 I have sinned [H8804] H3068 against the LORD H430 God H3478 of Israel H6213 , and thus and thus have I done [H8804] :

21 H7200 When I saw [H8799] H7998 among the spoils H259 a H2896 goodly H8152 Babylonish H155 garment H3967 , and two hundred H8255 shekels H3701 of silver H259 , and a H3956 wedge H2091 of gold H2572 of fifty H8255 shekels H4948 weight H2530 , then I coveted [H8799] H3947 them, and took [H8799] H2934 them; and, behold, they are hid [H8803] H776 in the earth H8432 in the midst H168 of my tent H3701 , and the silver under it.

22 H3091 So Joshua H7971 sent [H8799] H4397 messengers H7323 , and they ran [H8799] H168 unto the tent H2934 ; and, behold, it was hid [H8803] H168 in his tent H3701 , and the silver under it.

23 H3947 And they took [H8799] H8432 them out of the midst H168 of the tent H935 , and brought [H8686] H3091 them unto Joshua H1121 , and unto all the children H3478 of Israel H3332 , and laid them out [H8686] H6440 before H3068 the LORD.

24 H3091 And Joshua H3478 , and all Israel H3947 with him, took [H8799] H5912 Achan H1121 the son H2226 of Zerah H3701 , and the silver H155 , and the garment H3956 , and the wedge H2091 of gold H1121 , and his sons H1323 , and his daughters H7794 , and his oxen H2543 , and his asses H6629 , and his sheep H168 , and his tent H5927 , and all that he had: and they brought [H8686] H6010 them unto the valley H5911 of Achor.

25 H3091 And Joshua H559 said [H8799] H4100 , Why H5916 hast thou troubled [H8804] H3068 us? the LORD H5916 shall trouble [H8799] H3117 thee this day H3478 . And all Israel H7275 stoned [H8799] H68 him with stones H8313 , and burned [H8799] H784 them with fire H5619 , after they had stoned [H8799] H68 them with stones.

26 H6965 And they raised [H8686] H1419 over him a great H1530 heap H68 of stones H3117 unto this day H3068 . So the LORD H7725 turned [H8799] H2740 from the fierceness H639 of his anger H8034 . Wherefore the name H4725 of that place H7121 was called [H8804] H6010 , The valley H5911 of Achor H3117 , unto this day.

And all Israel stoned him with stones, and burned them with fire, after they had stoned them with stones. ²⁶ And they raised over him a great heap of stones unto this day. So the LORD turned from the fierceness of his anger. Wherefore the name of that place was called, The valley of Achor, unto this day.
