2 Samuel 2 And it came to pass after this, that David inquired of Jehovah, saying, Shall I go up into any of the cities of Judah? And Jehovah said unto him, Go up. And David said, Whither shall I go up? And he said, Unto Hebron.

H3068 And Jehovah H559 said H5927 unto him, Go up. H1732 And David H559 said, H5927 Whither shall I go up? H559 And he said, H2275 Unto Hebron.

2 H1732 So David H5927 went up H8147 thither, and his two H802 wives H293 also, Ahinoam H3159 the Jezreelitess, H26 and Abigail H802 the wife H5037 of Nabal H3761 the Carmelite.

3 H582 And his men H1732 that were with him did David H5927 bring up, H376 every man H1004 with his household: H3427 and they dwelt H5892 in the cities H2275 of Hebron.

4 H582 And the men H3063 of Judah H935 came, H4886 and there they anointed H1732 David H4428 king H1004 over the house H3063 of Judah. H5046 And they told H1732 David, H559 saying, H582 The men H3003 of Jabesh-gilead H6912 were they that buried H7586 Saul.

5 H1732 And David H7971 sent H4397 messengers H582 unto the men H3003 of Jabesh-gilead, H559 and said H1288 unto them, Blessed H3068 be ye of Jehovah, H6213 that ye have showed H2617 this kindness H113 unto your lord, H7586 even unto Saul, H6912 and have buried him.

6 H3068 And now Jehovah H6213 show H2617 lovingkindness H571 and truth H6213 unto you: and I also will requite H2896 you this kindness, H6213 because ye have done H1697 this thing.

7 H3027 Now therefore let your hands H2388 be strong, H1121 and be ye valiant; H7586 for Saul H113 your lord H4191 is dead, H1004 and also the house H3063 of Judah H4886 have anointed H4428 me king over them.

8 H74 Now Abner H1121 the son H5369 of Ner, H8269 captain H7586 of Saul's H6635 host, H3947 had taken H378 Ish-bosheth H1121 the son H7586 of Saul, H5674 and brought him over H4266 to Mahanaim;

9 H4427 and he made him king H1568 over Gilead, H805 and over the Ashurites, H3157 and over Jezreel, H669 and over Ephraim, H1144 and over Benjamin, H3478 and over all Israel.

10 H378 Ish-bosheth, H7586 Saul's H1121 son, H705 was forty H8141 years H1121 old H4427 when he began to reign H3478 over Israel, H4427 and he reigned H8147 two H8141 years. H1004 But the house H3063 of Judah H310 followed H1732 David.

11 H4557 And the time H1732 that David H4428 was king H2275 in Hebron H1004 over the house H3063 of Judah H7651 was seven H8141 years H8337 and six H2320 months.

12 H74 And Abner H1121 the son H5369 of Ner, H5650 and the servants H378 of Ish-bosheth H1121 the son H7586 of Saul, H3318 went out H4266 from Mahanaim H1391 to Gibeon.

13 H3097 And Joab H1121 the son H6870 of Zeruiah, H5650 and the servants H1732 of David, H3318 went out, H6298 and met H3162 them H1295 by the pool H1391 of Gibeon; H3427 and they sat down, H1295 the one on the one side of the pool, H1295 and the other on the other side of the pool.

14 H74 And Abner H559 said H3097 to Joab, H5288 Let the young men, H6965 I pray thee, arise H7832 and play H6440 before H3097 us. And Joab H559 said, H6965 Let them arise.

15 H6965 Then they arose H5674 and went over H4557 by number: H8147 twelve H1144 for Benjamin, H378 and for Ish-bosheth H1121 the son H7586 of Saul, H8147 and twelve H5650 of the servants H1732 of David.

16 H2388 And they caught H376 every one H7453 his fellow H7218 by the head, H2719 and thrust his sword H7453 in his fellow's H6654 side; H5307 so they fell down H3162 together: H4725 wherefore that place H7121 was called H2521 Helkath-hazzurim, H1391 which is in Gibeon.

17 H4421 And the battle H3966 was very H7186 sore H3117 that day: H74 and Abner H5062 was beaten, H582 and the men H3478 of Israel, H6440 before H5650 the servants H1732 of David.

18 H7969 And the three H1121 sons H6870 of Zeruiah H3097 were there, Joab, H52 and Abishai, H6214 and Asahel: H6214 and Asahel H7031 was as light H7272 of foot H259 as a H7704 wild H6643 roe.

19 H6214 And Asahel H7291 pursued H310 after H74 Abner; H3212 and in going H5186 he turned H3225 not to the right hand H8040 nor to the left H310 from following H74 Abner.

20 H74 Then Abner H6437 looked H310 behind H559 him, and said, H6214 Is it thou, Asahel? H559 And he answered, It is I.

21 H74 And Abner H559 said H5186 to him, Turn thee aside H3225 to thy right hand H8040 or to thy left, H270 and lay thee hold H259 on one H5288 of the young men, H3947 and take H2488 thee his armor. H6214 But Asahel H14 would H5493 not turn aside H310 from following him.

22 H74 And Abner H559 said H3254 again H6214 to Asahel, H5493 Turn thee aside H310 from following H5221 me: wherefore should I smite H776 thee to the ground? H5375 how then should I hold up H6440 my face H3097 to Joab H251 thy brother?

23 H3985 Howbeit he refused H5493 to turn aside: H74 wherefore Abner H310 with the hinder end H2595 of the spear H5221 smote H413 him in H2570 the body, H2595 so that the spear H3318 came out H310 behind H5307 him; and he fell down H4191 there, and died H8478 in the same place: H935 and it came to pass, that as many as came H4725 to the place H6214 where Asahel H5307 fell down H4191 and died H5975 stood still.

24 H3097 But Joab H52 and Abishai H7291 pursued H310 after H74 Abner: H8121 and the sun H935 went down H935 when they were come H1389 to the hill H522 of Ammah, H6440 that lieth before H1520 Giah H1870 by the way H4057 of the wilderness H1391 of Gibeon.

25 H1121 And the children H1144 of Benjamin H6908 gathered themselves together H310 after H74 Abner, H259 and became one H92 band, H5975 and stood H7218 on the top H1389 of a hill.

26 H74 Then Abner H7121 called H3097 to Joab, H559 and said, H2719 Shall the sword H398 devour H5331 for ever? H3045 knowest H4751 thou not that it will be bitterness H314 in the latter end? H559 how long shall it be then, ere thou bid H5971 the people H7725 return H310 from following H251 their brethren?

27 H3097 And Joab H559 said, H430 As God H2416 liveth, H3884 if thou hadst not H1696 spoken, H1242 surely then in the morning H5971 the people H5927 had gone away, H310 nor followed H376 every one H251 his brother.

28 H3097 So Joab H8628 blew H7782 the trumpet; H5971 and all the people H5975 stood still, H7291 and pursued H310 after H3478 Israel H3898 no more, neither fought H3254 they any more.

29 H74 And Abner H582 and his men H1980 went H3915 all that night H6160 through the Arabah; H5674 and they passed over H3383 the Jordan, H5674 and went through H1338 all Bithron, H935 and came H4266 to Mahanaim.

30 H3097 And Joab H7725 returned H310 from following H74 Abner: H6908 and when he had gathered H5971 all the people H6908 together, H6485 there lacked H1732 of David's H5650 servants H8672 nineteen H376 men H6214 and Asahel.

31 H5650 But the servants H1732 of David H5221 had smitten H1144 of Benjamin, H74 and of Abner's H582 men, H7969 so that three H3967 hundred H8346 and threescore H376 men H4191 died.

32 H5375 And they took up H6214 Asahel, H6912 and buried H6913 him in the sepulchre H1 of his father, H1035 which was in Beth-lehem. H3097 And Joab H582 and his men H3212 went H3915 all night, H215 and the day H2275 brake upon them at Hebron.
