H302 Moreover Ahithophel H559 said [H8799]   H53 unto Absalom H977 , Let me now choose out [H8799]   H8147 twelve H6240   H505 thousand H376 men H6965 , and I will arise [H8799]   H7291 and pursue [H8799]   H310 after H1732 David H3915 this night:
H935 And I will come [H8799]   H3023 upon him while he is weary H7504 and weak H3027 handed H2729 , and will make him afraid [H8689]   H5971 : and all the people H5127 that are with him shall flee [H8804]   H5221 ; and I will smite [H8689]   H4428 the king only:
H7725 And I will bring back [H8686]   H5971 all the people H376 unto thee: the man H1245 whom thou seekest [H8764]   H7725 is as if all returned [H8800]   H5971 : so all the people H7965 shall be in peace.
H1697 And the saying H3474 pleased [H8799]   H53 Absalom H5869 well H2205 , and all the elders H3478 of Israel.
H559 Then said [H8799]   H53 Absalom H7121 , Call [H8798]   H2365 now Hushai H757 the Archite H8085 also, and let us hear [H8799]   H6310 likewise what he saith.
H2365 And when Hushai H935 was come [H8799]   H53 to Absalom H53 , Absalom H559 spake [H8799]   H559 unto him, saying [H8800]   H302 , Ahithophel H1696 hath spoken [H8765]   H1697 after this manner H6213 : shall we do [H8799]   H1697 after his saying H1696 ? if not; speak [H8761]   thou.
H2365 And Hushai H559 said [H8799]   H53 unto Absalom H6098 , The counsel H302 that Ahithophel H3289 hath given [H8804]   H2896 is not good H6471 at this time.
H559 For, said [H8799]   H2365 Hushai H3045 , thou knowest [H8804]   H1 thy father H582 and his men H1368 , that they be mighty men H4751 , and they be chafed H5315 in their minds H1677 , as a bear H7909 robbed H7704 of her whelps in the field H1 : and thy father H376 is a man H4421 of war H3885 , and will not lodge [H8799]   H5971 with the people.
H2244 Behold, he is hid [H8737]   H259 now in some H6354 pit H259 , or in some H4725 other place H5307 : and it will come to pass, when some of them be overthrown [H8800]   H8462 at the first H8085 , that whosoever [H8802]   H8085 heareth [H8804]   H559 it will say [H8804]   H4046 , There is a slaughter H5971 among the people H310 that follow H53 Absalom.
H1121 And he also that is valiant H2428   H3820 , whose heart H3820 is as the heart H738 of a lion H4549 , shall utterly [H8736]   H4549 melt [H8735]   H3478 : for all Israel H3045 knoweth [H8802]   H1 that thy father H1368 is a mighty man H2428 , and they which be with him are valiant H1121 men.
H3289 Therefore I counsel [H8804]   H3478 that all Israel H622 be generally [H8736]   H622 gathered [H8735]   H1835 unto thee, from Dan H884 even to Beersheba H2344 , as the sand H3220 that is by the sea H7230 for multitude H1980 ; and that thou go [H8802]   H7128 to battle H6440 in thine own person.
H935 So shall we come [H8804]   H259 upon him in some H4725 place H4672 where he shall be found [H8738]   H5168 , and we will light H2919 upon him as the dew H5307 falleth [H8799]   H127 on the ground H582 : and of him and of all the men H3498 that are with him there shall not be left [H8738]   H1571 so much as H259 one.
H518 Moreover, if H622 he be gotten [H8735]   H5892 into a city H3478 , then shall all Israel H5375 bring [H8689]   H2256 ropes H5892 to that city H5498 , and we will draw [H8804]   H5158 it into the river H1571 , until there be not one H6872 small stone H4672 found [H8738]   there.
H53 And Absalom H376 and all the men H3478 of Israel H559 said [H8799]   H6098 , The counsel H2365 of Hushai H757 the Archite H2896 is better H6098 than the counsel H302 of Ahithophel H3068 . For the LORD H6680 had appointed [H8765]   H6565 to defeat [H8687]   H2896 the good H6098 counsel H302 of Ahithophel H5668 , to the intent H3068 that the LORD H935 might bring [H8687]   H7451 evil H53 upon Absalom.
H559 Then said [H8799]   H2365 Hushai H6659 unto Zadok H54 and to Abiathar H3548 the priests H302 , Thus and thus did Ahithophel H3289 counsel [H8804]   H53 Absalom H2205 and the elders H3478 of Israel H3289 ; and thus and thus have I counselled [H8804]  .
H7971 Now therefore send [H8798]   H4120 quickly H5046 , and tell [H8685]   H1732 David H559 , saying [H8800]   H3885 , Lodge [H8799]   H3915 not this night H6160 in the plains [H8675]   H5679   H4057 of the wilderness H5674 , but speedily [H8800]   H5674 pass over [H8799]   H4428 ; lest the king H1104 be swallowed up [H8792]   H5971 , and all the people that are with him.
H3083 Now Jonathan H290 and Ahimaaz H5975 stayed [H8802]   H5883 by Enrogel H3201 ; for they might [H8799]   H7200 not be seen [H8736]   H935 to come [H8800]   H5892 into the city H8198 : and a wench H1980 went [H8804]   H5046 and told [H8689]   H3212 them; and they went [H8799]   H5046 and told [H8689]   H4428 king H1732 David.
H5288 Nevertheless a lad H7200 saw [H8799]   H5046 them, and told [H8686]   H53 Absalom H3212 : but they went [H8799]   H8147 both H4120 of them away quickly H935 , and came [H8799]   H376 to a man's H1004 house H980 in Bahurim H875 , which had a well H2691 in his court H8033 ; whither H3381 they went down [H8799]  .
H802 And the woman H3947 took [H8799]   H6566 and spread [H8799]   H4539 a covering H875 over the well's H6440 mouth H7849 , and spread [H8799]   H7383 ground corn H1697 thereon; and the thing H3045 was not known [H8738]  .
H53 And when Absalom's H5650 servants H935 came [H8799]   H802 to the woman H1004 to the house H559 , they said [H8799]   H290 , Where is Ahimaaz H3083 and Jonathan H802 ? And the woman H559 said [H8799]   H5674 unto them, They be gone over [H8804]   H4323 the brook H4325 of water H1245 . And when they had sought [H8762]   H4672 and could not find [H8804]   H7725 them, they returned [H8799]   H3389 to Jerusalem.
H310 And it came to pass, after H3212 they were departed [H8800]   H5927 , that they came up [H8799]   H875 out of the well H3212 , and went [H8799]   H5046 and told [H8686]   H4428 king H1732 David H559 , and said [H8799]   H1732 unto David H6965 , Arise [H8798]   H4120 , and pass quickly H5674 over [H8798]   H4325 the water H302 : for thus hath Ahithophel H3289 counselled [H8804]   against you.
H1732 Then David H6965 arose [H8799]   H5971 , and all the people H5674 that were with him, and they passed over [H8799]   H3383 Jordan H1242 : by the morning H216 light H5737 there lacked [H8738]   H259 not one H5674 of them that was not gone over [H8804]   H3383 Jordan.
H302 And when Ahithophel H7200 saw [H8804]   H6098 that his counsel H6213 was not followed [H8738]   H2280 , he saddled [H8799]   H2543 his ass H6965 , and arose [H8799]   H3212 , and gat him home [H8799]   H1004 to his house H5892 , to his city H1004 , and put his household H6680 in order [H8762]   H2614 , and hanged [H8735]   H4191 himself, and died [H8799]   H6912 , and was buried [H8735]   H6913 in the sepulchre H1 of his father.
H1732 Then David H935 came [H8804]   H4266 to Mahanaim H53 . And Absalom H5674 passed over [H8804]   H3383 Jordan H376 , he and all the men H3478 of Israel with him.
H53 And Absalom H7760 made [H8804]   H6021 Amasa H6635 captain of the host H3097 instead of Joab H6021 : which Amasa H376 was a man's H1121 son H8034 , whose name H3501 was Ithra H3481 an Israelite H935 , that went in [H8804]   H26 to Abigail H1323 the daughter H5176 of Nahash H269 , sister H6870 to Zeruiah H3097 Joab's H517 mother.
H3478 So Israel H53 and Absalom H2583 pitched [H8799]   H776 in the land H1568 of Gilead.
H1732 And it came to pass, when David H935 was come [H8800]   H4266 to Mahanaim H7629 , that Shobi H1121 the son H5176 of Nahash H7237 of Rabbah H1121 of the children H5983 of Ammon H4353 , and Machir H1121 the son H5988 of Ammiel H3810 of Lodebar H1271 , and Barzillai H1569 the Gileadite H7274 of Rogelim,
H5066 Brought [H8689]   H4904 beds H5592 , and basons H3335 , and earthen [H8802]   H3627 vessels H2406 , and wheat H8184 , and barley H7058 , and flour H7039 , and parched H6321 corn, and beans H5742 , and lentiles H7039 , and parched pulse,
H1706 And honey H2529 , and butter H6629 , and sheep H8194 , and cheese H1241 of kine H1732 , for David H5971 , and for the people H398 that were with him, to eat [H8800]   H559 : for they said [H8804]   H5971 , The people H7457 is hungry H5889 , and weary H6771 , and thirsty H4057 , in the wilderness.
ERV(i) 1 Moreover Ahithophel said unto Absalom, Let me now choose out twelve thousand men, and I will arise and pursue after David this night: 2 and I will come upon him while he is weary and weak handed, and will make him afraid: and all the people that are with him shall flee; and I will smite the king only: 3 and I will bring back all the people unto thee: the man whom thou seekest is as if all returned: [so] all the people shall be in peace. 4 And the saying pleased Absalom well, and all the elders of Israel. 5 Then said Absalom, Call now Hushai the Archite also, and let us hear likewise what he saith. 6 And when Hushai was come to Absalom, Absalom spake unto him, saying, Ahithophel hath spoken after this manner: shall we do [after] his saying? if not, speak thou. 7 And Hushai said unto Absalom, The counsel that Ahithophel hath given this time is not good. 8 Hushai said moreover, Thou knowest thy father and his men, that they be mighty men, and they be chafed in their minds, as a bear robbed of her whelps in the field: and thy father is a man of war, and will not lodge with the people. 9 Behold, he is hid now in some pit, or in some [other] place: and it will come to pass, when some of them be fallen at the first, that whosoever heareth it will say, There is a slaughter among the people that follow Absalom. 10 And even he that is valiant, whose heart is as the heart of a lion, shall utterly melt: for all Israel knoweth that thy father is a mighty man, and they which be with him are valiant men. 11 But I counsel that all Israel be gathered together unto thee, from Dan even to Beer-sheba, as the sand that is by the sea for multitude; and that thou go to battle in thine own person. 12 So shall we come upon him in some place where he shall be found, and we will light upon him as the dew falleth on the ground: and of him and of all the men that are with him we will not leave so much as one. 13 Moreover, if he be gotten into a city, then shall all Israel bring ropes to that city, and we will draw it into the river, until there be not one small stone found there. 14 And Absalom and all the men of Israel said, The counsel of Hushai the Archite is better than the counsel of Ahithophel. For the LORD had ordained to defeat the good counsel of Ahithophel, to the intent that the LORD might bring evil upon Absalom. 15 Then said Hushai unto Zadok and to Abiathar the priests. Thus and thus did Ahithophel counsel Absalom and the elders of Israel; and thus and thus have I counselled. 16 Now therefore send quickly, and tell David, saying, Lodge not this night at the fords of the wilderness, but in any wise pass over; lest the king be swallowed up, and all the people that are with him. 17 Now Jonathan and Ahimaaz stayed by En-rogel; and a maidservant used to go and tell them; and they went and told king David: for they might not be seen to come into the city. 18 But a lad saw them, and told Absalom: and they went both of them away quickly, and came to the house of a man in Bahurim, who had a well in his court; and they went down thither. 19 And the woman took and spread the covering over the well’s mouth, and strewed bruised corn thereon; and nothing was known. 20 And Absalom’s servants came to the woman to the house; and they said, Where are Ahimaaz and Jonathan? And the woman said unto them, They be gone over the brook of water. And when they had sought and could not find them, they returned to Jerusalem. 21 And it came to pass, after they were departed, that they came up out of the well, and went and told king David; and they said unto David, Arise ye, and pass quickly over the water: for thus hath Ahithophel counselled against you. 22 Then David arose, and all the people that were with him, and they passed over Jordan: by the morning light there lacked not one of them that was not gone over Jordan. 23 And when Ahithophel saw that his counsel was not followed, he saddled his ass, and arose, and gat him home, unto his city, and set his house in order, and hanged himself; and he died, and was buried in the sepulchre of his father. 24 Then David came to Mahanaim. And Absalom passed over Jordan, he and all the men of Israel with him. 25 And Absalom set Amasa over the host instead of Joab. Now Amasa was the son of a man, whose name was Ithra the Israelite, that went in to Abigal the daughter of Nahash, sister to Zeruiah Joab’s mother. 26 And Israel and Absalom pitched in the land of Gilead. 27 And it came to pass, when David was come to Mahanaim, that Shobi the son of Nahash of Rabbah of the children of Ammon, and Machir the son of Ammiel of Lo-debar, and Barzillai the Gileadite of Rogelim, 28 brought beds, and basons, and earthen vessels, and wheat, and barley, and meal, and parched [corn], and beans, and lentils, and parched [pulse], 29 and honey, and butter, and sheep, and cheese of kine, for David, and for the people that were with him, to eat: for they said, The people is hungry, and weary, and thirsty, in the wilderness.
