Judges 18 In those days there was no king in Israel : and in those days the tribe of the Danites sought them an inheritance to dwell in ; for unto that day all their inheritance had not fallen unto them among the tribes of Israel.

2 H1121 And the children H1835 of Dan H7971 sent [H8799] H4940 of their family H2568 five H582 men H7098 from their coasts H1121 , men H2428 of valour H6881 , from Zorah H847 , and from Eshtaol H7270 , to spy [H8763] H776 out the land H2713 , and to search [H8800] H559 it; and they said [H8799] H3212 unto them, Go [H8798] H2713 , search [H8798] H776 the land H935 : who when they came [H8799] H2022 to mount H669 Ephraim H1004 , to the house H4318 of Micah H3885 , they lodged [H8799] there.

3 H1004 When they were by the house H4318 of Micah H5234 , they knew [H8689] H6963 the voice H5288 of the young man H3881 the Levite H5493 : and they turned in [H8799] H559 thither, and said [H8799] H935 unto him, Who brought [H8689] H1988 thee hither H6213 ? and what makest [H8802] thou in this place ? and what hast thou here?

4 H559 And he said [H8799] H2090 unto them, Thus H2090 and thus H6213 dealeth [H8804] H4318 Micah H7936 with me, and hath hired [H8799] H3548 me, and I am his priest.

5 H559 And they said [H8799] H7592 unto him, Ask counsel [H8798] H430 , we pray thee, of God H3045 , that we may know [H8799] H1870 whether our way H1980 which we go [H8802] H6743 shall be prosperous [H8686] .

6 H3548 And the priest H559 said [H8799] H3212 unto them, Go [H8798] H7965 in peace H5227 : before H3068 the LORD H1870 is your way H3212 wherein ye go [H8799] .

7 H2568 Then the five H582 men H3212 departed [H8799] H935 , and came [H8799] H3919 to Laish H7200 , and saw [H8799] H5971 the people H7130 that were therein H3427 , how they dwelt [H8802] H983 careless H4941 , after the manner H6722 of the Zidonians H8252 , quiet [H8802] H982 and secure [H8802] H3423 ; and there was no magistrate [H8802] H6114 H776 in the land H3637 , that might put them to shame [H8688] H1697 in any thing H7350 ; and they were far H6722 from the Zidonians H1697 , and had no business H120 with any man.

8 H935 And they came [H8799] H251 unto their brethren H6881 to Zorah H847 and Eshtaol H251 : and their brethren H559 said [H8799] unto them, What say ye?

9 H559 And they said [H8799] H6965 , Arise [H8798] H5927 , that we may go up [H8799] H7200 against them: for we have seen [H8804] H776 the land H3966 , and, behold, it is very H2896 good H2814 : and are ye still [H8688] H6101 ? be not slothful [H8735] H3212 to go [H8800] H935 , and to enter [H8800] H3423 to possess [H8800] H776 the land.

10 H935 When ye go [H8800] H935 , ye shall come [H8799] H5971 unto a people H982 secure [H8802] H7342 , and to a large H776 land H430 : for God H5414 hath given [H8804] H3027 it into your hands H4725 ; a place H4270 where there is no want H1697 of any thing H776 that is in the earth.

11 H5265 And there went [H8799] H4940 from thence of the family H1839 of the Danites H6881 , out of Zorah H847 and out of Eshtaol H8337 , six H3967 hundred H376 men H2296 appointed [H8803] H3627 with weapons H4421 of war.

12 H5927 And they went up [H8799] H2583 , and pitched [H8799] H7157 in Kirjathjearim H3063 , in Judah H7121 : wherefore they called [H8804] H4725 that place H4265 Mahanehdan H3117 unto this day H310 : behold, it is behind H7157 Kirjathjearim.

13 H5674 And they passed [H8799] H2022 thence unto mount H669 Ephraim H935 , and came [H8799] H1004 unto the house H4318 of Micah.

14 H6030 Then answered [H8799] H2568 the five H582 men H1980 that went [H8802] H7270 to spy out [H8763] H776 the country H3919 of Laish H559 , and said [H8799] H251 unto their brethren H3045 , Do ye know [H8804] H3426 that there is H1004 in these houses H646 an ephod H8655 , and teraphim H6459 , and a graven image H4541 , and a molten image H3045 ? now therefore consider [H8798] H6213 what ye have to do [H8799] .

15 H5493 And they turned [H8799] H935 thitherward, and came [H8799] H1004 to the house H5288 of the young man H3881 the Levite H1004 , even unto the house H4318 of Micah H7592 , and saluted [H8799] H7965 him.

16 H8337 And the six H3967 hundred H376 men H2296 appointed [H8803] H3627 with their weapons H4421 of war H1121 , which were of the children H1835 of Dan H5324 , stood [H8737] H6607 by the entering H8179 of the gate.

17 H2568 And the five H582 men H1980 that went [H8802] H7270 to spy out [H8763] H776 the land H5927 went up [H8799] H935 , and came in [H8804] H3947 thither, and took [H8804] H6459 the graven image H646 , and the ephod H8655 , and the teraphim H4541 , and the molten image H3548 : and the priest H5324 stood [H8737] H6607 in the entering H8179 of the gate H8337 with the six H3967 hundred H376 men H2296 that were appointed [H8803] H3627 with weapons H4421 of war.

18 H935 And these went [H8804] H4318 into Micah's H1004 house H3947 , and fetched [H8799] H6459 the carved image H646 , the ephod H8655 , and the teraphim H4541 , and the molten image H559 . Then said [H8799] H3548 the priest H6213 unto them, What do [H8802] ye?

19 H559 And they said [H8799] H2790 unto him, Hold thy peace [H8685] H7760 , lay [H8798] H3027 thine hand H6310 upon thy mouth H3212 , and go [H8798] H1961 with us, and be to us [H8800] H1 a father H3548 and a priest H2896 : is it better H3548 for thee to be a priest H1004 unto the house H259 of one H376 man H3548 , or that thou be a priest H7626 unto a tribe H4940 and a family H3478 in Israel?

20 H3548 And the priest's H3820 heart H3190 was glad [H8799] H3947 , and he took [H8799] H646 the ephod H8655 , and the teraphim H6459 , and the graven image H935 , and went in [H8799] H7130 the midst H5971 of the people.

21 H6437 So they turned [H8799] H3212 and departed [H8799] H7760 , and put [H8799] H2945 the little ones H4735 and the cattle H3520 and the carriage H6440 before them.

22 H7368 And when they were a good way [H8689] H1004 from the house H4318 of Micah H582 , the men H1004 that were in the houses H4318 near to Micah's H1004 house H2199 were gathered together [H8738] H1692 , and overtook [H8686] H1121 the children H1835 of Dan.

23 H7121 And they cried [H8799] H1121 unto the children H1835 of Dan H5437 . And they turned [H8686] H6440 their faces H559 , and said [H8799] H4318 unto Micah H2199 , What aileth thee, that thou comest with such a company [H8738] ?

24 H559 And he said [H8799] H3947 , Ye have taken away [H8804] H430 my gods H6213 which I made [H8804] H3548 , and the priest H3212 , and ye are gone away [H8799] H559 : and what have I more? and what is this that ye say [H8799] unto me, What aileth thee?

25 H1121 And the children H1835 of Dan H559 said [H8799] H6963 unto him, Let not thy voice H8085 be heard [H8686] H4751 among us, lest angry H5315 H582 fellows H6293 run [H8799] H622 upon thee, and thou lose [H8804] H5315 thy life H5315 , with the lives H1004 of thy household.

26 H1121 And the children H1835 of Dan H3212 went [H8799] H1870 their way H4318 : and when Micah H7200 saw [H8799] H2389 that they were too strong H6437 for him, he turned [H8799] H7725 and went back [H8799] H1004 unto his house.

27 H3947 And they took [H8804] H4318 the things which Micah H6213 had made [H8804] H3548 , and the priest H935 which he had, and came [H8799] H3919 unto Laish H5971 , unto a people H8252 that were at quiet [H8802] H982 and secure [H8802] H5221 : and they smote [H8686] H6310 them with the edge H2719 of the sword H8313 , and burnt [H8804] H5892 the city H784 with fire.

28 H5337 And there was no deliverer [H8688] H7350 , because it was far H6721 from Zidon H1697 , and they had no business H120 with any man H6010 ; and it was in the valley H1050 that lieth by Bethrehob H1129 . And they built [H8799] H5892 a city H3427 , and dwelt [H8799] therein.

29 H7121 And they called [H8799] H8034 the name H5892 of the city H1835 Dan H8034 , after the name H1835 of Dan H1 their father H3205 , who was born [H8795] H3478 unto Israel H199 : howbeit H8034 the name H5892 of the city H3919 was Laish H7223 at the first.

30 H1121 And the children H1835 of Dan H6965 set up [H8686] H6459 the graven image H3083 : and Jonathan H1121 , the son H1647 of Gershom H1121 , the son H4519 of Manasseh H1121 , he and his sons H3548 were priests H7626 to the tribe H1839 of Dan H3117 until the day H1540 of the captivity [H8800] H776 of the land.

31 H7760 And they set them up [H8799] H4318 Micah's H6459 graven image H6213 , which he made [H8804] H3117 , all the time H1004 that the house H430 of God H7887 was in Shiloh.
