2 Samuel 11 And it came to pass, at the return of the year, at the time when kings go out to battle, that David sent Joab, and his servants with him, and all Israel; and they destroyed the children of Ammon, and besieged Rabbah. But David tarried at Jerusalem.

1 H8666 And it came to pass, at the return H8141 of the year, H6256 at the time H4428 when kings H3318 go out H1732 to battle, that David H7971 sent H3097 Joab, H5650 and his servants H3478 with him, and all Israel; H7843 and they destroyed H1121 the children H5983 of Ammon, H6696 and besieged H7237 Rabbah. H1732 But David H3427 tarried H3389 at Jerusalem.

2 H6153 And it came to pass at eventide, H1732 that David H6965 arose H4904 from off his bed, H1980 and walked H1406 upon the roof H4428 of the king's H1004 house: H1406 and from the roof H7200 he saw H802 a woman H7364 bathing; H802 and the woman H3966 was very H2896 beautiful H4758 to look upon.

3 H1732 And David H7971 sent H1875 and inquired H802 after the woman. H559 And one said, H1339 Is not this Bath-sheba, H1323 the daughter H463 of Eliam, H802 the wife H223 of Uriah H2850 the Hittite?

4 H1732 And David H7971 sent H4397 messengers, H3947 and took H935 her; and she came in H7901 unto him, and he lay H6942 with her (for she was purified H2932 from her uncleanness); H7725 and she returned H1004 unto her house.

5 H802 And the woman H2029 conceived; H7971 and she sent H5046 and told H1732 David, H5046 and said, H2030 I am with child.

6 H1732 And David H7971 sent H3097 to Joab, H7971 saying, Send H223 me Uriah H2850 the Hittite. H3097 And Joab H7971 sent H223 Uriah H1732 to David.

7 H223 And when Uriah H935 was come H1732 unto him, David H7592 asked H3097 of him how Joab H7965 did, H5971 and how the people H7965 fared, H4421 and how the war H7965 prospered.

8 H1732 And David H559 said H223 to Uriah, H3381 Go down H1004 to thy house, H7364 and wash H7272 thy feet. H223 And Uriah H3318 departed out H4428 of the king's H1004 house, H310 and there followed H4864 him a mess H4428 of food from the king.

9 H223 But Uriah H7901 slept H6607 at the door H4428 of the king's H1004 house H5650 with all the servants H113 of his lord, H3381 and went not down H1004 to his house.

10 H5046 And when they had told H1732 David, H559 saying, H223 Uriah H3381 went not down H1004 unto his house, H1732 David H559 said H223 unto Uriah, H935 Art thou not come H1870 from a journey? H3381 wherefore didst thou not go down H1004 unto thy house?

11 H223 And Uriah H559 said H1732 unto David, H727 The ark, H3478 and Israel, H3063 and Judah, H3427 abide H5521 in booths; H113 and my lord H3097 Joab, H5650 and the servants H113 of my lord, H2583 are encamped H6440 in the open H7704 field; H589 shall I H935 then go H1004 into my house, H398 to eat H8354 and to drink, H7901 and to lie H802 with my wife? H2416 as thou livest, H5315 and as thy soul H2416 liveth, H6213 I will not do H1697 this thing.

12 H1732 And David H559 said H223 to Uriah, H3427 Tarry H3117 here to-day H4279 also, and to-morrow H7971 I will let thee depart. H223 So Uriah H3427 abode H3389 in Jerusalem H3117 that day, H4283 and the morrow.

13 H1732 And when David H7121 had called H398 him, he did eat H8354 and drink H6440 before H7937 him; and he made him drunk: H6153 and at even H3318 he went out H7901 to lie H4904 on his bed H5650 with the servants H113 of his lord, H3381 but went not down H1004 to his house.

14 H1242 And it came to pass in the morning, H1732 that David H3789 wrote H5612 a letter H3097 to Joab, H7971 and sent H3027 it by the hand H223 of Uriah.

15 H3789 And he wrote H5612 in the letter, H559 saying, H3051 Set H223 ye Uriah H6440 in the forefront H2389 of the hottest H4421 battle, H7725 and retire H310 ye from him, H5221 that he may be smitten, H4191 and die.

16 H3097 And it came to pass, when Joab H8104 kept watch H5892 upon the city, H5414 that he assigned H223 Uriah H4725 unto the place H3045 where he knew H2428 that valiant H582 men were.

17 H582 And the men H5892 of the city H3318 went out, H3898 and fought H3097 with Joab: H5307 and there fell H5971 some of the people, H5650 even of the servants H1732 of David; H223 and Uriah H2850 the Hittite H4191 died also.

18 H3097 Then Joab H7971 sent H5046 and told H1732 David H1697 all the things H4421 concerning the war;

19 H6680 and he charged H4397 the messenger, H559 saying, H3615 When thou hast made an end H1696 of telling H1697 all the things H4421 concerning the war H4428 unto the king,

20 H4428 it shall be that, if the king's H2534 wrath H5927 arise, H559 and he say H5066 unto thee, Wherefore went ye so nigh H5892 unto the city H3898 to fight? H3045 knew H3384 ye not that they would shoot H2346 from the wall?

21 H5221 who smote H40 Abimelech H1121 the son H3380 of Jerubbesheth? H802 did not a woman H7993 cast H6400 an upper H7393 millstone H2346 upon him from the wall, H4191 so that he died H8405 at Thebez? H5066 why went ye so nigh H2346 the wall? H559 then shalt thou say, H5650 Thy servant H223 Uriah H2850 the Hittite H4191 is dead also.

22 H4397 So the messenger H3212 went, H935 and came H5046 and showed H1732 David H3097 all that Joab H7971 had sent him for.

23 H4397 And the messenger H559 said H1732 unto David, H582 The men H1396 prevailed H3318 against us, and came out H7704 unto us into the field, H6607 and we were upon them even unto the entrance H8179 of the gate.

24 H3384 And the shooters H3384 shot H5650 at thy servants H2346 from off the wall; H4428 and some of the king's H5650 servants H4191 are dead, H5650 and thy servant H223 Uriah H2850 the Hittite H4191 is dead also.

25 H1732 Then David H559 said H4397 unto the messenger, H559 Thus shalt thou say H3097 unto Joab, H1697 Let not this thing H3415 displease H2719 thee, for the sword H398 devoureth H2090 one as well as another; H4421 make thy battle H2388 more strong H5892 against the city, H2040 and overthrow H2388 it: and encourage thou him.

26 H802 And when the wife H223 of Uriah H8085 heard H223 that Uriah H376 her husband H4191 was dead, H5594 she made lamentation H1167 for her husband.

27 H60 And when the mourning H5674 was past, H1732 David H7971 sent H622 and took H1004 her home to his house, H802 and she became his wife, H3205 and bare H1121 him a son. H1697 But the thing H1732 that David H6213 had done H3415 displeased H3068 Jehovah.
