2 Samuel 11 And it came to pass, after the year was expired , at the time when kings go forth to battle, that David sent Joab , and his servants with him, and all Israel ; and they destroyed the children of Ammon , and besieged Rabbah . But David tarried still at Jerusalem.

But David H3427 tarried still [H8802] H3389 at Jerusalem.

2 H6153 And it came to pass in an eveningtide H6256 H1732 , that David H6965 arose [H8799] H4904 from off his bed H1980 , and walked [H8691] H1406 upon the roof H4428 of the king's H1004 house H1406 : and from the roof H7200 he saw [H8799] H802 a woman H7364 washing [H8801] H802 herself; and the woman H3966 was very H2896 beautiful H4758 to look upon.

3 H1732 And David H7971 sent [H8799] H1875 and enquired [H8799] H802 after the woman H559 . And one said [H8799] H1339 , Is not this Bathsheba H1323 , the daughter H463 of Eliam H802 , the wife H223 of Uriah H2850 the Hittite?

4 H1732 And David H7971 sent [H8799] H4397 messengers H3947 , and took [H8799] H935 her; and she came in [H8799] H7901 unto him, and he lay [H8799] H6942 with her; for she was purified [H8693] H2932 from her uncleanness H7725 : and she returned [H8799] H1004 unto her house.

5 H802 And the woman H2029 conceived [H8799] H7971 , and sent [H8799] H5046 and told [H8686] H1732 David H559 , and said [H8799] H2030 , I am with child.

6 H1732 And David H7971 sent [H8799] H3097 to Joab H7971 , saying, Send [H8798] H223 me Uriah H2850 the Hittite H3097 . And Joab H7971 sent [H8799] H223 Uriah H1732 to David.

7 H223 And when Uriah H935 was come [H8799] H1732 unto him, David H7592 demanded [H8799] H3097 of him how Joab H7965 did H5971 , and how the people H7965 did H4421 , and how the war H7965 prospered.

8 H1732 And David H559 said [H8799] H223 to Uriah H3381 , Go down [H8798] H1004 to thy house H7364 , and wash [H8798] H7272 thy feet H223 . And Uriah H3318 departed out [H8799] H4428 of the king's H1004 house H310 , and there followed H4864 him a mess H4428 of meat from the king.

9 H223 But Uriah H7901 slept [H8799] H6607 at the door H4428 of the king's H1004 house H5650 with all the servants H113 of his lord H3381 , and went not down [H8804] H1004 to his house.

10 H5046 And when they had told [H8686] H1732 David H559 , saying [H8800] H223 , Uriah H3381 went not down [H8804] H1004 unto his house H1732 , David H559 said [H8799] H223 unto Uriah H935 , Camest [H8802] H1870 thou not from thy journey H3381 ? why then didst thou not go down [H8804] H1004 unto thine house?

11 H223 And Uriah H559 said [H8799] H1732 unto David H727 , The ark H3478 , and Israel H3063 , and Judah H3427 , abide [H8802] H5521 in tents H113 ; and my lord H3097 Joab H5650 , and the servants H113 of my lord H2583 , are encamped [H8802] H6440 in the open H7704 fields H589 ; shall I H935 then go [H8799] H1004 into mine house H398 , to eat [H8800] H8354 and to drink [H8800] H7901 , and to lie [H8800] H802 with my wife H2416 ? as thou livest H5315 , and as thy soul H2416 liveth H6213 , I will not do [H8799] H1697 this thing.

12 H1732 And David H559 said [H8799] H223 to Uriah H3427 , Tarry [H8798] H3117 here to day H4279 also, and to morrow H7971 I will let thee depart [H8762] H223 . So Uriah H3427 abode [H8799] H3389 in Jerusalem H3117 that day H4283 , and the morrow.

13 H1732 And when David H7121 had called [H8799] H398 him, he did eat [H8799] H8354 and drink [H8799] H6440 before H7937 him; and he made him drunk [H8762] H6153 : and at even H3318 he went out [H8799] H7901 to lie [H8800] H4904 on his bed H5650 with the servants H113 of his lord H3381 , but went not down [H8804] H1004 to his house.

14 H1242 And it came to pass in the morning H1732 , that David H3789 wrote [H8799] H5612 a letter H3097 to Joab H7971 , and sent [H8799] H3027 it by the hand H223 of Uriah.

15 H3789 And he wrote [H8799] H5612 in the letter H559 , saying [H8800] H3051 , Set [H8798] H223 ye Uriah H6440 in the forefront H4136 H2389 of the hottest H4421 battle H7725 , and retire [H8804] H310 ye from him H5221 , that he may be smitten [H8738] H4191 , and die [H8804] .

16 H3097 And it came to pass, when Joab H8104 observed [H8800] H5892 the city H5414 , that he assigned [H8799] H223 Uriah H4725 unto a place H3045 where he knew [H8804] H2428 that valiant H582 men were .

17 H582 And the men H5892 of the city H3318 went out [H8799] H3898 , and fought [H8735] H3097 with Joab H5307 : and there fell [H8799] H5971 some of the people H5650 of the servants H1732 of David H223 ; and Uriah H2850 the Hittite H4191 died [H8799] also.

18 H3097 Then Joab H7971 sent [H8799] H5046 and told [H8686] H1732 David H1697 all the things H4421 concerning the war;

19 H6680 And charged [H8762] H4397 the messenger H559 , saying [H8800] H3615 , When thou hast made an end [H8763] H1696 of telling [H8763] H1697 the matters H4421 of the war H4428 unto the king,

20 H4428 And if so be that the king's H2534 wrath H5927 arise [H8799] H559 , and he say [H8804] H5066 unto thee, Wherefore approached ye so nigh [H8738] H5892 unto the city H3898 when ye did fight [H8736] H3045 ? knew [H8804] H3384 ye not that they would shoot [H8686] H2346 from the wall?

21 H5221 Who smote [H8689] H40 Abimelech H1121 the son H3380 of Jerubbesheth H802 ? did not a woman H7993 cast [H8689] H6400 a piece H7393 of a millstone H2346 upon him from the wall H4191 , that he died [H8799] H8405 in Thebez H5066 ? why went ye nigh [H8738] H2346 the wall H559 ? then say [H8804] H5650 thou, Thy servant H223 Uriah H2850 the Hittite H4191 is dead [H8804] also.

22 H4397 So the messenger H3212 went [H8799] H935 , and came [H8799] H5046 and shewed [H8686] H1732 David H3097 all that Joab H7971 had sent [H8804] him for.

23 H4397 And the messenger H559 said [H8799] H1732 unto David H582 , Surely the men H1396 prevailed [H8804] H3318 against us, and came out [H8799] H7704 unto us into the field H6607 , and we were upon them even unto the entering H8179 of the gate.

24 H3384 And the shooters [H8688] H3384 shot [H8686] H2346 from off the wall H5650 upon thy servants H4428 ; and some of the king's H5650 servants H4191 be dead [H8799] H5650 , and thy servant H223 Uriah H2850 the Hittite H4191 is dead [H8804] also.

25 H1732 Then David H559 said [H8799] H4397 unto the messenger H559 , Thus shalt thou say [H8799] H3097 unto Joab H1697 , Let not this thing H3415 displease [H8799] H5869 H2719 thee, for the sword H398 devoureth [H8799] H2090 one as well as another H4421 : make thy battle H2388 more strong [H8685] H5892 against the city H2040 , and overthrow [H8798] H2388 it: and encourage [H8761] thou him.

26 H802 And when the wife H223 of Uriah H8085 heard [H8799] H223 that Uriah H376 her husband H4191 was dead [H8804] H5594 , she mourned [H8799] H1167 for her husband.

27 H60 And when the mourning H5674 was past [H8799] H1732 , David H7971 sent [H8799] H622 and fetched [H8799] H1004 her to his house H802 , and she became his wife H3205 , and bare [H8799] H1121 him a son H1697 . But the thing H1732 that David H6213 had done [H8804] H3415 displeased [H8799] H5869 H3068 the LORD.
