Joshua 8:1-29 And the LORD said to Joshua, Fear not, neither be thou dismayed: take all the people of war with thee, and arise, go up to Ai: see, I have given into thine hand the king of Ai, and his people, and his city, and his land:

1 H3068 And the LORD H559 [H8799] said H3091 to Joshua, H3372 [H8799] Fear H2865 [H8735] not, neither be thou dismayed: H3947 [H8798] take H5971 all the people H4421 of war H6965 [H8798] with thee, and arise, H5927 [H8798] go up H5857 to Ai: H7200 [H8798] see, H5414 [H8804] I have given H3027 into thine hand H4428 the king H5857 of Ai, H5971 and his people, H5892 and his city, H776 and his land:

2 H6213 [H8804] And thou shalt do H5857 to Ai H4428 and its king H6213 [H8804] as thou didst H3405 to Jericho H4428 and its king: H7998 only its spoil, H929 and its cattle, H962 [H8799] shall ye take for a prey H7760 [H8798] to yourselves: lay H693 [H8802] thee an ambush H5892 for the city H310 behind it.

3 H3091 So Joshua H6965 [H8799] arose, H5971 and all the people H4421 of war, H5927 [H8800] to go up H5857 against Ai: H3091 and Joshua H977 [H8799] chose out H7970 thirty H505 thousand H1368 mighty H376 men H2428 of valour, H7971 [H8799] and sent them away H3915 by night.

4 H6680 [H8762] And he commanded H559 [H8800] them, saying, H7200 [H8798] Behold, H693 [H8802] ye shall lie in wait H5892 against the city, H310 even behind H5892 the city: H7368 0 go H3966 not very H7368 [H8686] far H5892 from the city, H3559 [H8737] but be ye all ready:

5 H5971 And I, and all the people H7126 [H8799] that are with me, will approach H5892 to the city: H3318 [H8799] and it shall come to pass, when they come out H7125 [H8800] against H7223 us, as at the first, H5127 [H8804] that we will flee H6440 at the face of them,

6 H3318 [H8804] (For they will come out H310 after H5423 [H8687] us) till we have drawn H5892 them from the city; H559 [H8799] for they will say, H5127 [H8801] They flee H6440 at the face of H7223 us, as at the first: H5127 [H8804] therefore we will flee H6440 at the face of them.

7 H6965 [H8799] Then ye shall rise H693 [H8802] from the ambush, H3423 [H8689] and seize H5892 upon the city: H3068 for the LORD H430 your God H5414 [H8804] will give H3027 it into your hand.

8 H8610 [H8800] And it shall be, when ye have taken H5892 the city, H3341 [H8686] that ye shall set H5892 the city H784 on fire: H1697 according to the commandment H3068 of the LORD H6213 [H8799] shall ye do. H7200 [H8798] See, H6680 [H8765] I have commanded you.

9 H3091 Joshua H7971 [H8799] therefore sent them forth: H3212 [H8799] and they went H3993 to lie in ambush, H3427 [H8799] and abode H1008 between Bethel H5857 and Ai, H3220 on the west side H5857 of Ai: H3091 but Joshua H3885 [H8799] lodged H3915 that night H8432 among H5971 the people.

10 H3091 And Joshua H7925 [H8686] rose early H1242 in the morning, H6485 [H8799] and numbered H5971 the people, H5927 [H8799] and went up, H2205 he and the elders H3478 of Israel, H6440 at the face of H5971 the people H5857 to Ai.

11 H5971 And all the people, H4421 even the people of war H5927 [H8804] that were with him, went up, H5066 [H8799] and drew near, H935 [H8799] and came H5892 before the city, H2583 [H8799] and encamped H6828 on the north side H5857 of Ai: H1516 now there was a valley H5857 between them and Ai.

12 H3947 [H8799] And he took H2568 about five H505 thousand H376 men, H7760 [H8799] and set H693 [H8802] them to lie in ambush H1008 between Bethel H5857 and Ai, H3220 on the west side H5857 H5892 [H8675] of the city.

13 H7760 [H8799] And when they had set H5971 the people, H4264 even all the host H6828 that was on the north H5892 of the city, H6119 and their ones lying in ambush H3220 on the west H5892 of the city, H3091 Joshua H3212 [H8799] went H3915 that night H8432 into the midst H6010 of the valley.

14 H4428 And it came to pass, when the king H5857 of Ai H7200 [H8800] saw H4116 [H8762] it, that they hasted H7925 [H8686] and rose early, H582 and the men H5892 of the city H3318 [H8799] went out H7125 [H8800] against H3478 Israel H4421 to battle, H5971 he and all his people, H4150 at a time appointed, H6440 at the face of H6160 the plain; H3045 [H8804] but he knew H693 [H8802] not that there were liers in ambush H310 against him behind H5892 the city.

15 H3091 And Joshua H3478 and all Israel H5060 [H8735] made as if they were beaten H6440 at the face of H5127 [H8799] them, and fled H1870 by the way H4057 of the wilderness.

16 H5971 And all the people H5857 H5892 [H8675] that were in Ai H2199 [H8735] were called H7291 H310 [H8800] together to pursue H7291 H310 [H8799] them: and they pursued H3091 Joshua, H5423 [H8735] and were drawn away H5892 from the city.

17 H376 And there was not a man H7604 [H8738] left H5857 in Ai H1008 or Bethel, H3318 [H8804] that went not out H310 after H3478 Israel: H5800 [H8799] and they left H5892 the city H6605 [H8803] open, H7291 [H8799] and pursued H3478 Israel.

18 H3068 And the LORD H559 [H8799] said H3091 to Joshua, H5186 [H8798] Stretch out H3591 the spear H3027 that is in thine hand H5857 toward Ai; H5414 [H8799] for I will give H3027 it into thine hand. H3091 And Joshua H5186 [H8799] stretched out H3591 the spear H3027 that he had in his hand H5892 toward the city.

19 H693 [H8802] And the ambush H6965 [H8804] arose H4120 quickly H4725 out of their place, H7323 [H8799] and they ran H5186 [H8800] as soon as he had stretched out H3027 his hand: H935 [H8799] and they entered H5892 into the city, H3920 [H8799] and took H4116 [H8762] it, and hasted H3341 [H8686] and set H5892 the city H784 on fire.

20 H582 And when the men H5857 of Ai H6437 [H8799] looked H310 behind H7200 [H8799] them, they saw, H6227 and, behold, the smoke H5892 of the city H5927 [H8804] ascended H8064 to heaven, H3027 and they had no hand H5127 [H8800] to flee H2008 this way or that way: H5971 and the people H5127 [H8801] that fled H4057 to the wilderness H2015 [H8738] turned back H7291 [H8802] upon the pursuers.

21 H3091 And when Joshua H3478 and all Israel H7200 [H8804] saw H693 [H8802] that the ambush H3920 [H8804] had taken H5892 the city, H6227 and that the smoke H5892 of the city H5927 [H8804] ascended, H7725 [H8799] then they turned again, H5221 [H8686] and slew H582 the men H5857 of Ai.

22 H428 And the other H3318 [H8804] issued out H5892 of the city H7125 [H8800] against H8432 them; so they were in the midst H3478 of Israel, H5221 [H8686] some on this side, and some on that side: and they smote H5704 them, so that H7604 [H8689] they let H8300 none of them remain H6412 or escape.

23 H4428 And the king H5857 of Ai H8610 [H8804] they took H2416 alive, H7126 [H8686] and brought H3091 him to Joshua.

24 H3478 And it came to pass, when Israel H3615 [H8763] had finished H2026 [H8800] slaying H3427 [H8802] all the inhabitants H5857 of Ai H7704 in the field, H4057 in the wilderness H7291 [H8804] in which they chased H5307 [H8799] them, and when they had all fallen H6310 on the edge H2719 of the sword, H8552 [H8800] until they were consumed, H3478 that all the Israelites H7725 [H8799] returned H5857 to Ai, H5221 [H8686] and smote H6310 it with the edge H2719 of the sword.

25 H5307 [H8802] And so it was, that all that fell H3117 that day, H376 both of men H802 and women, H8147 H6240 were twelve H505 thousand, H582 even all the men H5857 of Ai.

26 H3091 For Joshua H7725 0 drew H3027 not his hand H7725 [H8689] back, H5186 [H8804] with which he stretched out H3591 the spear, H2763 [H8689] until he had utterly secluded H3427 [H8802] all the inhabitants H5857 of Ai.

27 H929 Only the cattle H7998 and the spoil H5892 of that city H3478 Israel H962 [H8804] took for a prey H1697 to themselves, according to the word H3068 of the LORD H6680 [H8765] which he commanded H3091 Joshua.

28 H3091 And Joshua H8313 [H8799] burnt H5857 Ai, H7760 [H8799] and made H8510 it an heap H5769 to the age, H8077 even a desolation H3117 to this day.

29 H4428 And the king H5857 of Ai H8518 [H8804] he hanged H6086 on a tree H6256 H6153 until evening: H8121 and as soon as the sun H935 [H8800] was down, H3091 Joshua H6680 [H8765] commanded H3381 0 that they should take H5038 his body H3381 [H8686] down H6086 from the tree, H7993 [H8686] and cast H6607 it at the entrance H8179 of the gate H5892 of the city, H6965 [H8686] and raise H1419 over it a great H1530 heap H68 of stones, H3117 that remaineth to this day.
