Joshua 8:1-29 And the LORD said to Joshua, Fear not, neither be you dismayed: take all the people of war with you, and arise, go up to Ai: see, I have given into your hand the king of Ai, and his people, and his city, and his land:

1 H3068 And the LORD H559 said H3091 to Joshua, H3372 Fear H408 not, neither H2865 be you dismayed: H3947 take H3605 all H5971 the people H4421 of war H6965 with you, and arise, H5927 go H5857 up to Ai: H7200 see, H5414 I have given H3027 into your hand H4428 the king H5857 of Ai, H5971 and his people, H5892 and his city, H776 and his land:

2 H6213 And you shall do H5857 to Ai H4428 and her king H6213 as you did H3405 to Jericho H4428 and her king: H7535 only H7998 the spoil H929 thereof, and the cattle H962 thereof, shall you take for a prey H7760 to yourselves: lay H693 you an ambush H5892 for the city H310 behind it.

3 H3091 So Joshua H6965 arose, H3605 and all H5971 the people H4421 of war, H5927 to go H5857 up against Ai: H3091 and Joshua H977 chose H7970 out thirty H505 thousand H1368 mighty H376 men H2428 of valor, H7971 and sent H3915 them away by night.

4 H6680 And he commanded H559 them, saying, H7200 Behold, H693 you shall lie H693 in wait H5892 against the city, H310 even behind H5892 the city: H7368 go H3966 not very H7368 far H5892 from the city, H3605 but be you all H3559 ready:

5 H3605 And I, and all H5971 the people H7126 that are with me, will approach H5892 to the city: H1961 and it shall come H3588 to pass, when H3318 they come H7125 out against H7223 us, as at the first, H5127 that we will flee H6440 before them,

6 H3318 (For they will come H310 out after H5704 us) till H5423 we have drawn H5892 them from the city; H559 for they will say, H5127 They flee H6440 before H7223 us, as at the first: H5127 therefore we will flee H6440 before them.

7 H6965 Then you shall rise H693 up from the ambush, H3423 and seize H5892 on the city: H3068 for the LORD H430 your God H5414 will deliver H3027 it into your hand.

8 H8610 And it shall be, when you have taken H5892 the city, H3341 that you shall set H5892 the city H784 on fire: H1697 according to the commandment H3068 of the LORD H6213 shall you do. H7200 See, H6680 I have commanded you.

9 H3091 Joshua H7971 therefore sent H3212 them forth: and they went H693 to lie in ambush, H3427 and stayed H996 between H1008 Bethel H5857 and Ai, H3220 on the west H5857 side of Ai: H3091 but Joshua H3885 lodged H3915 that night H8432 among H5971 the people.

10 H3091 And Joshua H7925 rose H7925 up early H1242 in the morning, H6485 and numbered H5971 the people, H5927 and went H2205 up, he and the elders H3478 of Israel, H6440 before H5971 the people H5857 to Ai.

11 H3605 And all H5971 the people, H5971 even the people H4421 of war H5927 that were with him, went H5066 up, and drew near, H935 and came H5048 before H5892 the city, H2583 and pitched H6828 on the north H5857 side of Ai: H1516 now there was a valley H996 between H5857 them and Ai.

12 H3947 And he took H2568 about five H505 thousand H376 men, H7760 and set H693 them to lie in ambush H996 between H1008 Bethel H5857 and Ai, H3220 on the west H5892 side of the city.

13 H7760 And when they had set H5971 the people, H3605 even all H4264 the host H6828 that was on the north H5892 of the city, H6119 and their liers in wait H3220 on the west H5892 of the city, H3091 Joshua H3212 went H3915 that night H8432 into the middle H6010 of the valley.

14 H1961 And it came H4428 to pass, when the king H5857 of Ai H7200 saw H4116 it, that they hurried H7925 and rose H7925 up early, H582 and the men H5892 of the city H3318 went H7125 out against H3478 Israel H4421 to battle, H3605 he and all H5971 his people, H4150 at a time appointed, H6440 before H6160 the plain; H3045 but he knew H693 not that there were liers in ambush H310 against him behind H5892 the city.

15 H3091 And Joshua H3605 and all H3478 Israel H5060 made as if they were beaten H6440 before H5127 them, and fled H1870 by the way H4057 of the wilderness.

16 H3605 And all H5971 the people H5892 that were in Ai H2199 were called H7291 together to pursue H310 after H7291 them: and they pursued H310 after H3091 Joshua, H5423 and were drawn H5892 away from the city.

17 H376 And there was not a man H7604 left H5857 in Ai H1008 or Bethel, H3318 that went H310 not out after H3478 Israel: H5800 and they left H5892 the city H6605 open, H7291 and pursued H3478 after Israel.

18 H3068 And the LORD H559 said H3091 to Joshua, H5186 Stretch H3591 out the spear H3027 that is in your hand H413 toward H5857 Ai; H5414 for I will give H3027 it into your hand. H3091 And Joshua H5186 stretched H3591 out the spear H3027 that he had in his hand H413 toward H5892 the city.

19 H693 And the ambush H6965 arose H4120 quickly H4725 out of their place, H7323 and they ran H5186 as soon as he had stretched H3027 out his hand: H935 and they entered H5892 into the city, H3920 and took H4116 it, and hurried H5892 and set the city H784 on fire.

20 H582 And when the men H5857 of Ai H6437 looked H310 behind H7200 them, they saw, H2009 and, behold, H6227 the smoke H5892 of the city H5927 ascended H8064 up to heaven, H3808 and they had no H3027 power H5127 to flee H2007 this H2008 way H2008 or that way: H5971 and the people H5127 that fled H4057 to the wilderness H2015 turned H2015 back H7291 on the pursuers.

21 H3091 And when Joshua H3605 and all H3478 Israel H7200 saw H693 that the ambush H3920 had taken H5892 the city, H6227 and that the smoke H5892 of the city H5927 ascended, H7725 then they turned H7725 again, H5221 and slew H582 the men H5857 of Ai.

22 H428 And the other H3318 issued H5892 out of the city H7125 against H8432 them; so they were in the middle H3478 of Israel, H428 some H2088 on this H428 side, and some H5221 on that side: and they smote H5704 them, so H1115 that they let none H8300 of them remain H6412 or escape.

23 H4428 And the king H5857 of Ai H8610 they took H2416 alive, H7126 and brought H3091 him to Joshua.

24 H1961 And it came H3478 to pass, when Israel H3615 had made an end H2026 of slaying H3605 all H3427 the inhabitants H5857 of Ai H7704 in the field, H4057 in the wilderness H834 wherein H7291 they chased H3605 them, and when they were all H5307 fallen H6310 on the edge H2719 of the sword, H5704 until H8552 they were consumed, H3605 that all H3478 the Israelites H7725 returned H5857 to Ai, H5221 and smote H6310 it with the edge H2719 of the sword.

25 H3605 And so it was, that all H5307 that fell H3117 that day, H376 both of men H802 and women, H8147 were twelve H6240 H505 thousand, H3605 even all H582 the men H5857 of Ai.

26 H3091 For Joshua H7725 drew H3027 not his hand H7725 back, H834 with which H5186 he stretched H3591 out the spear, H5704 until H2763 he had utterly destroyed H3605 all H3427 the inhabitants H5857 of Ai.

27 H7535 Only H929 the cattle H7998 and the spoil H5892 of that city H3478 Israel H962 took for a prey H1992 to themselves, H1697 according to the word H3068 of the LORD H834 which H6680 he commanded H3091 Joshua.

28 H3091 And Joshua H8313 burnt H5857 Ai, H7760 and made H8510 it an heap H5769 for ever, H8077 even a desolation H2088 to this H3117 day.

29 H4428 And the king H5857 of Ai H8518 he hanged H5921 on H6086 a tree H5704 until H6256 eventide: H6153 H8121 and as soon as the sun H935 was down, H3091 Joshua H6680 commanded H3381 that they should take H5038 his carcass H3381 down H6086 from the tree, H7993 and cast H413 it at H6607 the entering H8179 of the gate H5892 of the city, H6965 and raise H5921 thereon H1419 a great H1530 heap H68 of stones, H2088 that remains to this H3117 day.
