DouayRheims(i) 7 And he spoke a parable also to them that were invited, marking how they chose the first seats at the table, saying to them: 8 When thou art invited to a wedding, sit not down in the first place, lest perhaps one more honourable than thou be invited by him: 9 And he that invited thee and him, come and say to thee: Give this man place. And then thou begin with shame to take the lowest place. 10 But when thou art invited, go, sit down in the lowest place; that when he who invited thee cometh, he may say to thee: Friend, go up higher. Mace(i) 7 Afterwards observing how eager the guests were for the first places, he gave them this instruction: 8 when any one invites you to a wedding, don't put yourself in the highest seat: for fear some person of greater distinction should be a guest, 9 and he that invited you both, should come and bid you give place to him; and you should have the disgrace of taking the lowest seat. 10 but when you are invited, go place your self last; that he, who invited you, when he comes, may say to you, friend, go up higher: and that will do you honour before all the company at table. 11 for he that exalteth himself, shall be humbled, and he that humbleth himself, shall be exalted.
Whiston(i) 7 But he spake also a parable to those who were bidden, when he marked how they chose out the chief seats, saying unto them, 8 When thou shall be invited to a wedding, sit not down in the highest seat, lest one more honourable than thou come; 9 And he that invited thee and him, come and [say] to thee, Give this man place; and thou with shame take the lowest place. 10 But when thou shall be invited sit down in the lowest place; that when he that inviteth thee shall come, he may say unto thee, Friend, go up higher: And then shalt thou have respect in the presence of them that sit at meat with thee. 11 For whosoever exalteth himself, shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself, shall be exalted.
Wesley(i) 7 And he spake a parable to them that were invited, when he marked how they chose the chief seats, 8 saying to them, When thou art invited by any man to a marriage-feast, sit not down in the highest place, lest a more honourable man than thou be invited by him, 9 And he that invited thee and him come and say to thee, Give this man place. And then thou shalt begin with shame to take the lowest place. But when thou art invited, 10 go and sit down in the lowest place, that when he who invited thee cometh, he may say, Friend, go up higher: then shalt thou have honour in the presence of them that sit at table with thee. For every one that exalteth himself shall be humbled, and he that 11 humbleth himself shall be exalted.
Worsley(i) 7 And He spake a parable to those that were invited, observing how they chose the chief seats, saying unto them, 8 When thou art invited by any one to a wedding, do not sit down in the uppermost place, least one more honorable than thou be invited by him; 9 and he who invited thee and him, should come and say to thee, Give place to this person, and then thou begin with shame to take the lowest place. 10 But when thou art invited, go and sit down at the lowest place, that, when he who invited thee cometh, he may say to thee, Friend, go up higher: then wilt thou have honor before them that sit at table with thee: 11 for whosoever exalteth himself shall be humbled, and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.
Haweis(i) 7 Then he spake to those who were invited, a parable, when he observed how they chose the principal seats; saying unto them, 8 When thou art invited of any person to a marriage entertainment, recline not on the principal couch; lest a more honourable personage than thyself be invited by him; 9 and he that invited thee and him, coming say to thee, Yield this person the place; and so thou shalt begin with shame to go down to the lowest place. 10 But when thou art invited, go and sit down in the lowest place; that when he who invited thee comes, he may say to thee, Friend, go up higher; then shalt thou have respect in the presence of those who are seated with thee. 11 For every one who exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.
Thomson(i) 7 Then observing how eager the guests were for the first places at table, he addressed them in a parable, and said, 8 When thou art invited by any one to a wedding, do not take the uppermost place, lest a person of greater distinction than thou be invited by him. 9 In which case he who invited thee and him will come and say to thee, Give place to this man. Then thou, with confusion, must take the lower place. 10 But when thou art invited, go and take the lowest place, that when he who invited thee cometh, he may say to thee, Friend, go up higher. Then thou wilt have honour in the sight of them who are at table with thee. 11 For whoever exalteth himself, shall be humbled, and he who humbleth. himself, shall be exalted.
Webster(i) 7 And he put forth a parable to those who were invited, when he marked how they chose out the chief rooms; saying to them, 8 When thou art invited by any man to a wedding, sit not down in the highest room, lest a more honorable man than thou be invited by him; 9 And he that invited thee and him, shall come and say to thee, Give this man place; and thou begin with shame to take the lowest room. 10 But when thou art invited, go and sit down in the lowest room; that when he that invited thee cometh, he may say to thee, Friend, go up higher: then shalt thou have honor in the presence of them that sit at table with thee. 11 For whoever exalteth himself shall be abased, and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.

Living_Oracles(i) 7 Observing how eager the guests were to possess the higher places at the table, he gave them this injunction, 8 When you are invited to a wedding, do not occupy the highest place at table, lest one more considerable than you be bidden, 9 and he who invited you both, come and say to you, Give place to this man; and you should then rise with confusion, to take the lowest place. 10 But when you are invited, go to the lowest place, that when he who invited you comes, he may say to you, Friend, go up higher; for that will do you honor before the company. 11 For whoever exalts himself, shall be humbled; and whoever humbles himself, shall be exalted.

JPS_ASV_Byz(i) 7 And he spake a parable unto those that were bidden, when he marked how they chose out the chief seats, saying unto them, 8 When thou art bidden of any man to a marriage feast, sit not down in the chief seat, lest haply a more honorable man than thou be bidden of him, 9 and he that bade thee and him shall come and say to thee, Give this man place, and then thou shalt begin with shame to take the lowest place. 10 But when thou art bidden, go and sit down in the lowest place, that when he that hath bidden thee cometh, he may say to thee, Friend, go up higher; then shalt thou have glory in the presence of them that sit at meat with thee. 11 For every one that exalteth himself shall be humbled, and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.
Rotherham(i) 7 And he went on to speak, unto the invited, a parable,––observing how, the first couches, they were choosing; saying unto them–– 8 Whensoever thou hast been invited by anyone unto a marriage feast, do not recline on the first couch; lest once, a more honourable than thou, have been invited by him, 9 and he that invited both thee and him should come, and say unto thee––Give, unto this one, place! and, then, thou shouldst begin, with shame, the last place, to occupy. 10 But, whensoever thou hast been invited, pass on and fall back into the last place, that, whensoever he that hath invited thee shall come, he may say unto thee––Friend! come close up, higher. Then, shalt thou have honour before all who are reclining together with thee. 11 Because, everyone who exalteth himself, shall be abased; and, he that abaseth himself, shall be exalted?
Twentieth_Century(i) 7 Observing that the guests were choosing the best places for themselves, Jesus told them this parable-- 8 "When you are invited by any one to a wedding banquet, do not seat yourself in the best place, for fear that some one of higher rank should have been invited by your host; 9 And he who invited you both will come and say to you 'Make room for this man,' and then you will begin in confusion to take the lowest place. 10 No, when you are invited, go and take the lowest place, so that, when he who has invited you comes, he may say to you 'Friend, come higher up'; and then you will be honored in the eyes of all your fellow-guests. 11 For every one who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted."
Godbey(i) 7 And He spoke a parable to those whom He had called, warning them that they should not choose the first couches; saying to them, 8 When you may be called by any one to a marriage feast, do not sit down upon the first couch; lest one more worthy than thee may have been called by him, 9 and the one having called thee and him, having come in shall say to thee, Give place to him; and then thou shalt with shame begin to take the last place. 10 But when you may be invited, coming in sit down in the last place; in order that when the one having invited thee may come, he will say to thee, Friend, come up higher: then there will be glory to thee in the presence of all those sitting along with thee. 11 Because every one who shall exalt himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.
WNT(i) 7 Then, when He noticed that the invited guests chose the best seats, He used this as an illustration and said to them, 8 "When any one invites you to a wedding banquet, do not take the best seat, lest perhaps some more honoured guest than you may have been asked, 9 and the man who invited you both will come and will say to you, 'Make room for this guest,' and then you, ashamed, will move to the lowest place. 10 On the contrary, when you are invited go and take the lowest place, that when your host comes round he may say to you, 'My friend, come up higher.' This will be doing you honour in the presence of all the other guests. 11 For whoever uplifts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be uplifted.
Worrell(i) 7 And He spake a parable to those who were bidden, when He observed how they were choosing out the first seats; saying to them, 8 "When you are bidden by any one to a marriage feast, sit not on the first seat, lest possibly a more honorable man than you may have been invited by him; 9 and he who bade you and him, coming, shall say to you, 'Give place to this man;' and then you shall, with shame, begin to occupy the lowest place. 10 But, when you are invited, going, sit in the lowest place, that, when he who invited you comes, he may say to you, 'Friend, go up higher;' then you will have glory in the presence of all who are reclining at table with you; 11 because every one who exalts himself shall be humbled, and he who humbles himself shall be exalted."
Moffatt(i) 7 He also told a parable to the guests, when he observed how they picked out the best places. 8 "When anyone invites you to a marriage-banquet," he said, "never lie down in the best place, in case a more distinguished guest than yourself has been invited; 9 then the host will tell you, 'Make room for him,' and you will proceed in shame to take the lowest place. 10 No, when you are invited, go and recline in the lowest place, so that when your host comes in he will tell you, 'Move higher up, my friend.' Then you will be honoured before your fellow guests. 11 For everyone who uplifts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be uplifted."
Goodspeed(i) 7 He noticed that the guests picked out the best places, and he gave them this illustration: 8 "When someone invites you to a wedding supper, do not take the best place, for someone more distinguished than you are may have been invited, 9 and your host will come and say to you 'Make room for this man,' and then you will proceed in confusion to take the poorest place. 10 But when you are invited anywhere, go and take the poorest place, so that when your host comes in, he will say to you, 'My friend, come to a better place.' So you will be shown consideration before all the other guests. 11 For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but the man who humbles himself will be exalted."
Riverside(i) 7 Observing how the guests were choosing the best couches, he gave them an illustration: 8 "When you are invited by any one to a wedding, do not recline on the best couch, for some one more honored than you may have been invited, 9 and when he who invited you and him comes he may say to you, 'Give place to this man,' and then you will with shame begin and take the humblest place. 10 But when you are invited, go and recline in the humblest place, so that when he who has invited you comes he may say, 'Friend, come up higher.' Then you will have honor before all your fellow guests. 11 For every one who exalts himself will be humbled and he who humbles himself will be exalted."
MNT(i) 7 He told a parable to the guests when he noticed how they began choosing the best seats. He said to them. 8 "When you are invited by any one to a marriage-feast, do not sit down in the best seat, lest a guest more distinguished than yourself has been invited, and your host come to you and say, 9 "'Give place to this man,' and then with mortification you proceed to take the lowest place. 10 "But when you are invited, go and sit down in the lowest place, so that when your host arrives he may say to you, 'My friend, come up higher.' Then you will be honored before the other guest. 11 "For every one who exalts himself shall be humbled, and he who humbles himself shall be exalted."
Lamsa(i) 7 And he spoke a parable to those who were invited there, because he saw them choosing places among the front seats. 8 When you are invited of a man to a banquet house, do not go and sit in the front seat; it might be that a more honorable man than you is invited there; 9 And then he who has invited you and him will come, and say to you, Give the place to him; and you will be embarrassed when you get up and take a lower seat. 10 But when you are invited, go and sit at the lower end, so that when he who has invited you comes, he will say to you, My friend, go up and sit higher; and you will have glory before all who sit with you. 11 For whoever exalts himself will be humbled; and whoever humbles himself will be exalted.
CLV(i) 7 Now He told a parable to those invited, attending to how they chose the first reclining places, saying to them, 8 Whenever you may be invited by anyone to wedding festivities, you may not recline in the first reclining place, lest at some time one held in honor more than you may be invited by him, 9 and when he who invites you and him comes, he will be declaring to you, 'Give this one place.' And then, with shame, you should be beginning to retain the last place." 10 But, whenever you may be invited, going, lean back in the last place, that whenever he who has invited you may be coming, he will be declaring to you, 'Friend, step further up.' Then glory will be yours in the sight of all those lying back at table with you." 11 For everyone exalting himself shall be humbled, and humbling himself shall be exalted."
Williams(i) 7 When He noticed how the guests were picking out the best places, He told them the following story: 8 "When you are invited by anyone to a wedding supper, never take the best place, for someone of greater distinction than you may have been invited, 9 so that your host may not come and say to you, 'Make room for this man'; and then in embarrassment you will proceed to take and keep the lowest place. 10 But when you are invited anywhere, go and take the lowest place, so that when your host comes in, he may say to you, 'My friend, come up to a better place.' Then you will be honored in the presence of all your fellow-guests. 11 For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but whoever humbles himself will be exalted."
BBE(i) 7 And he gave teaching in the form of a story to the guests who came to the feast, when he saw how they took the best seats; saying to them, 8 When you get a request to come to a feast, do not take the best seat, for a more important man than you may be coming, 9 And then the giver of the feast will come to you and say, Give your place to this man; and you, with shame, will have to take the lowest seat. 10 But when you come, go and take the lowest seat, so that when the giver of the feast comes, he may say to you, Friend, come up higher; and then you will have honour in the eyes of all the others who are there. 11 For every man who gives himself a high place will be put down, but he who takes a low place will be lifted up.
MKJV(i) 7 And He put forth a parable to those who were invited, when He noted how they chose out the chief places, saying to them, 8 When you are invited by anyone to a wedding, do not recline in the chief seat, lest a more honorable man than you may be invited by him. 9 And he who invited you and him shall come and say to you, Give place to this man; and then you begin with shame to take the last place. 10 But when you are invited, go and recline in the lowest place, so that when he who invited you comes, he may say to you, Friend, go up higher. Then glory shall be to you before those reclining with you. 11 For whoever exalts himself shall be abased, and he who humbles himself shall be exalted.
LITV(i) 7 And He spoke a parable to those who had been invited, noting how they were choosing out the chief seats, saying to them, 8 When you are invited by anyone to wedding feasts, do not recline at the chief seat lest one more honorable than you be invited by him, 9 and coming, he who invited you will say to you, Give this one place. And then you begin with shame to take the last place. 10 But when you are invited, going in, recline at the last place, so that when he who has invited you may come, he may say to you, Friend, go up higher. Then glory will be to you before those reclining with you. 11 For everyone exalting himself will be humbled, and the one humbling himself will be exalted.

And he words a parable to those called - heeding how they select the preeminent recliners; wording to them, 8 Whenever anyone calls you to a marriage recline not in the highest room; lest ever he calls a more honorable than you: 9 and he who called you comes and says to you, Give this one the place: and you begin to shame to hold on to the final place. 10 But when you are called, go and repose in the final place; so that whenever he who called you comes, he says to you, Friend, ascend higher! - then you have glory in the sight of them who repose with you. 11 For whoever exalts himself is humbled; and whoever humbles himself is exalted.
AUV(i) 7 Then Jesus told a parable to those who had been invited [i.e., the dinner guests at the Pharisee’s house. See verse 1], because He noticed how they were choosing places of honor [at the dinner table]. [So], He said to them, 8 “When somebody invites you to a wedding reception, do not recline at the head of the table [Note: See Matt. 23:6], for maybe someone more honorable than you has been invited by the host. 9 Then the one who invited both of you will come [over] and say to you, ‘Give this man your seat [at the table],’ and then you will be embarrassed and have to move to the least important seat. 10 But when you are invited [i.e., to a wedding reception], go and recline at the least important seat, so that when the host comes [over to you], he will say, ‘Friend, move up to a better seat.’ Then you will be shown honor in front of everyone at the dinner table. 11 For every person who exalts himself [as important] will be humbled, but the person who humbles himself will be exalted [as important].”

RYLT(i) 7 And he spake a simile unto those called, marking how they were choosing out the first couches, saying unto them, 8 'When you may be called by any one to marriage-feasts, you may not recline on the first couch, lest a more honourable than you may have been called by him, 9 and he who did call you and him having come shall say to you, Give to this one place, and then you may begin with shame to occupy the last place. 10 'But, when you may be called, having gone on, recline in the last place, that when he who called you may come, he may say to you, Friend, come up higher; then you shall have glory before those reclining with you; 11 because every one who is exalting himself shall be humbled, and he who is humbling himself shall be exalted.'
EJ2000(i) 7 ¶ And observing how they chose the first seats at the table, he put forth a parable to those who were invited, saying unto them, 8 When thou art called to a wedding by anyone, do not sit down in the highest place, lest a more honourable man than thou be invited of him, 9 and he that called thee and him come and say to thee, Give this man place, and thou begin with shame to have the lowest place. 10 But when thou art called, go and sit down in the lowest place that when he that invited thee comes, he may say unto thee, Friend, come up higher; then shalt thou have glory in the presence of those that sit at the table with thee. 11 For whosoever exalts himself shall be abased, and he that humbles himself shall be exalted.
CAB(i) 7 So He told a parable to those who were invited, when He noted how they chose the places of honor, saying to them: 8 Whenever you are invited by someone to a wedding celebration, do not sit down in the place of honor, lest one more honorable than you be invited by him; 9 and he who invited you and him shall come and say to you, 'Give place to this man,' and then you begin with shame to take the last place. 10 But when you are invited, go and sit down in the last place, so that when he who invited you comes, he shall say to you, 'Friend, go up higher.' Then you will have glory in the presence of those who recline with you. 11 For everyone who exalts himself shall be humbled, and he who humbles himself shall be exalted."
WPNT(i) 7 Then He told a parable to those who were invited, having observed how they kept trying for the best places, saying to them: 8 “Whenever you are invited by someone to a wedding feast, do not recline in the place of honor, in case someone more honorable than you has been invited by him; 9 then he who invited you both will come and say, ‘You, give this man place!’ and then, with shame, you start to take the lowest place. 10 Rather, whenever you are invited, go and recline in the lowest place, so that when your host comes, he may say to you, ‘Friend, move up higher’. Then you will have honor in the presence of your fellow guests. 11 Because everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.”
JMNT(i) 7 So He went on to tell an illustration (a parable) to the folks having been invited [to the meal] – as He was holding His attention on how, one after another, they continued choosing (picking out) for themselves the first reclining places (= the most prominent seats that were considered places of honor and importance) – while saying to them, 8 "Whenever you may be invited (or: called) unto wedding festivities (or: a marriage feast) by someone, you should not recline (= sit down) into the first (= most honorable or important) place, lest at some point there may be a person having been invited by him [who is held] in more honor ([who is] more distinguished) than you, 9 "and then, upon coming [up], the person inviting both you and him will proceed saying to you, 'Give [the] place to this person.' And at that point you begin, with shame and disgrace, to continue holding down (= occupying and retaining) the last place (= the place of least honor). 10 "But instead, whenever you may be invited (or: called), after going on your way, fall back into (= assume a position in) the last (= least distinguished) place, so that, whenever the person having invited you may come, he will proceed saying to you, 'Friend, walk (or: move) on up to a higher (more upward) [position].' At that point it will continue being a manifestation of esteem for you (or: there will proceed being glory on you; it will habitually be a good reputation to you) in the sight and presence of all those reclining back [at the dinner] with you (i.e., all your fellow guests), 11 "because everyone habitually exalting himself (lifting himself up; = promoting himself) will be habitually brought (or: made) low (be progressively humbled; be constantly demoted), and yet the person habitually making and bringing himself low (humbling and demoting himself) will be habitually exalted (lifted up; promoted)."
NSB(i) 7 He spoke an illustration to the invited guests. He noticed they chose from the most important seats. So he said to them: 8 »When you are invited to a marriage feast do not take the place of honor. Someone more distinguished than you may be invited. 9 »Your host would tell you, give this person your place. Then you would be embarrassed and have to take the place of least honor. 10 »When you are invited, take the place of least honor. Then, when your host comes, he will tell you, friend, move to a more honorable place. And the other guests will see how you are honored. 11 »Those who exalt themselves will be humbled. And people who humble themselves will be exalted.«
ISV(i) 7 A Lesson about GuestsWhen Jesus noticed how the guests were choosing the places of honor, he told them a parable. 8 “When you are invited by someone to a wedding banquet, don’t sit down at the place of honor in case someone more important than you was invited by the host. 9 Then the host who invited both of you would come to you and say, ‘Give this person your place.’ In disgrace, you would have to take the place of least honor. 10 But when you are invited, go and sit down at the place of least honor. Then, when your host comes, he will tell you, ‘Friend, move up higher,’ and you will be honored in the presence of everyone who eats with you. 11 Because everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but the person who humbles himself will be exalted.”
