Jeremiah 41 Now it came to pass in the seventh month , that Ishmael the son of Nethaniah the son of Elishama , of the seed royal , and the princes of the king , even ten men with him, came unto Gedaliah the son of Ahikam to Mizpah ; and there they did eat bread together in Mizpah.

3 H3458 Ishmael H5221 also slew [H8689] H3064 all the Jews H1436 that were with him, even with Gedaliah H4709 , at Mizpah H3778 , and the Chaldeans H4672 that were found [H8738] H582 there, and the men H4421 of war.

4 H8145 And it came to pass the second H3117 day H4191 after he had slain [H8687] H1436 Gedaliah H376 , and no man H3045 knew [H8804] it,

5 H935 That there came [H8799] H582 certain H7927 from Shechem H7887 , from Shiloh H8111 , and from Samaria H8084 , even fourscore H376 men H2206 , having their beards H1548 shaven [H8794] H899 , and their clothes H7167 rent [H8803] H1413 , and having cut [H8706] H4503 themselves, with offerings H3828 and incense H3027 in their hand H935 , to bring [H8687] H1004 them to the house H3068 of the LORD.

6 H3458 And Ishmael H1121 the son H5418 of Nethaniah H3318 went forth [H8799] H4709 from Mizpah H7125 to meet [H8800] H1058 them, weeping [H8802] H1980 all along [H8800] H1980 as he went [H8802] H6298 : and it came to pass, as he met [H8800] H559 them, he said [H8799] H935 unto them, Come [H8798] H1436 to Gedaliah H1121 the son H296 of Ahikam.

7 H935 And it was so, when they came [H8800] H8432 into the midst H5892 of the city H3458 , that Ishmael H1121 the son H5418 of Nethaniah H7819 slew [H8799] H8432 them, and cast them into the midst H953 of the pit H582 , he, and the men that were with him.

8 H6235 But ten H582 men H4672 were found [H8738] H559 among them that said [H8799] H3458 unto Ishmael H4191 , Slay [H8686] H3426 us not: for we have H4301 treasures H7704 in the field H2406 , of wheat H8184 , and of barley H8081 , and of oil H1706 , and of honey H2308 . 10 H3458 Then Ishmael H7617 carried away captive [H8799] H7611 all the residue H5971 of the people H4709 that were in Mizpah H4428 , even the king's H1323 daughters H5971 , and all the people H7604 that remained [H8737] H4709 in Mizpah H5018 , whom Nebuzaradan H7227 the captain H2876 of the guard H6485 had committed [H8689] H1436 to Gedaliah H1121 the son H296 of Ahikam H3458 : and Ishmael H1121 the son H5418 of Nethaniah H7617 carried them away captive [H8799] H3212 , and departed [H8799] H5674 to go over [H8800] H1121 to the Ammonites H5983 .

11 H3110 But when Johanan H1121 the son H7143 of Kareah H8269 , and all the captains H2428 of the forces H8085 that were with him, heard [H8799] H7451 of all the evil H3458 that Ishmael H1121 the son H5418 of Nethaniah H6213 had done [H8804] ,

12 H3947 Then they took [H8799] H582 all the men H3212 , and went [H8799] H3898 to fight [H8736] H3458 with Ishmael H1121 the son H5418 of Nethaniah H4672 , and found [H8799] H7227 him by the great H4325 waters H1391 that are in Gibeon.

13 H5971 Now it came to pass, that when all the people H3458 which were with Ishmael H7200 saw [H8800] H3110 Johanan H1121 the son H7143 of Kareah H8269 , and all the captains H2428 of the forces H8055 that were with him, then they were glad [H8799] .

14 H5971 So all the people H3458 that Ishmael H7617 had carried away captive [H8804] H4709 from Mizpah H5437 cast about [H8799] H7725 and returned [H8799] H3212 , and went [H8799] H3110 unto Johanan H1121 the son H7143 of Kareah.

15 H3458 But Ishmael H1121 the son H5418 of Nethaniah H4422 escaped [H8738] H6440 from H3110 Johanan H8083 with eight H582 men H3212 , and went [H8799] H1121 to the Ammonites H5983 .

16 H3947 Then took [H8799] H3110 Johanan H1121 the son H7143 of Kareah H8269 , and all the captains H2428 of the forces H7611 that were with him, all the remnant H5971 of the people H7725 whom he had recovered [H8689] H3458 from Ishmael H1121 the son H5418 of Nethaniah H4709 , from Mizpah H310 , after H5221 that he had slain [H8689] H1436 Gedaliah H1121 the son H296 of Ahikam H1397 , even mighty H582 men H4421 of war H802 , and the women H2945 , and the children H5631 , and the eunuchs H7725 , whom he had brought again [H8689] H1391 from Gibeon:

17 H3212 And they departed [H8799] H3427 , and dwelt in [H8799] H1628 the habitation H3643 of Chimham H681 , which is by H1035 Bethlehem H3212 , to go [H8800] H935 to enter [H8800] H4714 into Egypt,

So he forbare, and slew them not among their brethren. ⁹ Now the pit wherein Ishmael cast all the dead bodies of the men whom he had slain, by the side of Gedaliah, (the same was that which Asa the king had made for fear of Baasha king of Israel,) Ishmael the son of Nethaniah filled it with them that were slain. ¹⁰ Then Ishmael carried away captive all the residue of the people that were in Mizpah, even the king’s daughters, and all the people that remained in Mizpah, whom Nebuzaradan the captain of the guard had committed to Gedaliah the son of Ahikam: Ishmael the son of Nethaniah carried them away captive, and departed to go over to the children of Ammon. ¹¹ But when Johanan the son of Kareah, and all the captains of the forces that were with him, heard of all the evil that Ishmael the son of Nethaniah had done, ¹² then they took all the men, and went to fight with Ishmael the son of Nethaniah, and found him by the great waters that are in Gibeon. ¹³ Now it came to pass that when all the people which were with Ishmael saw Johanan the son of Kareah, and all the captains of the forces that were with him, then they were glad. ¹⁴ So all the people that Ishmael had carried away captive from Mizpah cast about and returned, and went unto Johanan the son of Kareah. ¹⁵ But Ishmael the son of Nethaniah escaped from Johanan with eight men, and went to the children of Ammon. ¹⁶ Then took Johanan the son of Kareah, and all the captains of the forces that were with him, all the remnant of the people whom he had recovered from Ishmael the son of Nethaniah, from Mizpah, after that he had slain Gedaliah the son of Ahikam, even the men of war, and the women, and the children, and the eunuchs, whom he had brought again from Gibeon: ¹⁷ and they departed, and dwelt in Geruth Chimham, which is by Bethlehem, to go to enter into Egypt, ¹⁸ because of the Chaldeans: for they were afraid of them, because Ishmael the son of Nethaniah had slain Gedaliah the son of Ahikam, whom the king of Babylon made governor over the land.
