Clementine_Vulgate(i) 1 [Et surrexit Elias propheta quasi ignis, et verbum ipsius quasi facula ardebat.
Wycliffe(i) 1 And Elie, the profete, roos as fier; for whi his word brente as a brond. 2 Which brouyte yn hungur on hem, and thei suynge hym weren maad fewe for enuye; for thei myyten not suffre the comaundementis of the Lord. 3 Bi the word of the Lord he held togidere heuene, and castide doun fro it fier to the erthe. 4 So Elie was alargid in his merueils; and who may haue glorie in lijk maner with thee, which tokist awei a deed man fro hellis, 5 fro the eritage of deth, in the word of the Lord God? 6 Which castidist doun kyngis to deth, and hast broke togidere liytli the power of hem, and gloriouse men fro her bed. 7 Which herdist dom in Syna, and in Oreb domes of defence. 8 Which anoyntist kyngis to penaunce, and makist prophetis successouris aftir thee. 9 Which were reseyued in a whirlwynde of fier, in a chare of horsis of fier. 10 Which art writun in the domes of tymes, to plese the wrathfulnesse of the Lord, to recounsele the herte of the fadir to the sone, and to restore the lynagis of Jacob. 11 Thei ben blessid, that siyen thee, and weren maad feir in thi frenschipe; 12 for whi we lyuen oneli in lijf, but after deth oure name schal not be siche. 13 Elie, that was hilid in a whirlewynd; and his spirit was fillid in Elisee. Elisee in hise daies dredde not the prince, and no man ouercam hym bi power; 14 nether ony word ouercam hym, and his deed bodi profesiede. 15 In his lijf he dide wondris ayens kynde; and in deth he wrouyte merueilis. 16 In alle these thingis the puple dide not penaunce, and yeden not awei fro her synnes, til whanne thei weren cast awei fro her lond, and weren scatered in to ech lond. 17 And a ful fewe folk was left, and a prince in the hous of Dauid. 18 Summe of hem diden that, that pleside God; but othere diden many synnes. 19 Ezechie maad strong his citee, and brouyte watir in to the myddis therof; and diggide a rooche with irun, and bildide a pit to watir. 20 In hise daies Senacherib stiede, and sente Rapsaces; and he reiside his hond ayens hem, and he reiside his hond ayens Syon, and was maad proud in his power. 21 Thanne the hertis and hondis of hem weren moued; and thei hadden sorewe as wymmen trauelynge of child. 22 And thei clepiden to help the merciful Lord, and thei spredden abrood the hondis, and reisiden to heuene; and the hooli Lord God herde soone the vois of hem. 23 He hadde not mynde on her synnes, nether yaf hem to her enemyes; but he purgide hem in the hond of Isaie, the hooli profete. 24 The aungel of the Lord castide doun the castels of Assiriens, and al to-brak hem. 25 For whi Ezechie dide that that pleside the Lord, and yede strongli in the weie of Dauith, his fadir; which weie Isaie, the grete profete, and feithful in the siyt of God, comaundide to hym. 26 In the daies of hym the sunne yede ayen abak; and God encreesside lijf to the kyng. 27 With greet spirit Ysaie siy the laste thingis; and he coumfortide the moreneris in Sion, `in to with outen ende. 28 He schewide thingis to comynge, and hid thingis, bifore that tho camen.
Geneva(i) 1 Then stood vp Elias the Prophet as a fire, and his worde burnt like a lampe. 2 He brought a famine vpon them, and by his zeale he diminished them: for they might not away with the commandements of the Lord. 3 By the word of the Lord he shut the heauen, and three times brought he the fire from heauen. 4 O Elias, how honorable art thou by thy woderous deedes! who may make his boast to be like thee! 5 Which hast raised vp ye dead from death, and by the word of the most High out of the graue: 6 Which hast brought Kings vnto destruction, and the honourable from their seate: 7 Which heardest the rebuke of the Lord in Sina, and in Horeb the iudgement of the vengeance: 8 Which diddest anoint Kings that they might recompense, and Prophets to be thy successours: 9 Which wast taken vp in a whirle winde of fire, and in a charet of fierie horses: 10 Which wast appointed to reproue in due season, and to pacifie the wrath of the Lordes iudgement before it kindled, and to turne the heartes of the fathers vnto the children, & to set vp the tribes of Iacob. 11 Blessed were they that sawe thee, and slept in loue: for we shall liue. 12 When Elias was couered with the storme, Eliseus was filled with his spirit: while he liued, he was not moued for any prince, neither coulde any bring him into subiection. 13 Nothing could ouercome him, and after his death his body prophesied. 14 He did wonders in his life, and in death were his workes marueilous. 15 For all this the people repented not, neither departed they from their sinnes: till they were caried away prisoners out of their land, and were scattered through all the earth, so that there remained but a very fewe people with the prince vnto ye house of Dauid. 16 Howbeit some of them did right, and some heaped vp sinnes. 17 Ezekias made his citie strong, and conueied water into the middes thereof: he digged thorowe the rocke with yron, & made fountaines for waters. 18 In his time came Sennacherib vp, and sent Rabsaces, & lift vp his hand against Sion, and boasted proudly. 19 Then trembled their heartes and handes, so that they sorowed like a woman in trauell. 20 But they called vpon the Lord, which is mercifull, and lift vp their hands vnto him, and immediatly the Holy one heard them out of heauen. 21 He thought no more vpon their sinnes, nor gaue them ouer to their enemies, but deliuered them by the hand of Esai. 22 He smote the hoste of the Assyrians, and his Angel destroyed them. 23 For Ezekias had done the thing that pleased the Lorde, and remained stedfastly in the wayes of Dauid his father, as Esai the great Prophet, and faithfull in his vision had commanded him. 24 In his time the sunne went backwarde, and he lengthened the Kings life. 25 He sawe by an excellent Spirit what shoulde come to passe at the last, and he comforted them that were sorowfull in Sion. 26 He shewed what shoulde come to passe for euer, and secret things, or euer they came to passe.
Bishops(i) 1 Then stoode vp Elias the prophete as a fyre, and his worde brent lyke a cresset. 2 He brought an hunger vpon them, and in his zeale he made the fewe in number: for they might not away with the commaundementes of the Lorde. 3 Through the worde of the Lorde he shut the heauen, & three times brought he the fire downe. 4 O Elias, howe honorable art thou in thy wonderons deedes? who may make his hoast to be lyke thee? 5 One that was dead thou raysedst vp from death, and in the worde of the hyest thou broughtest him out of the graue againe. 6 Thou hast cast downe kinges and destroyed them, and the honorable from their seate. 7 Upon the mount Sina thou heardest the iudgement, & vpon Horeb the iudgement of the vengeaunce. 8 Which diddest annoynt kinges to recompence, and ordaynedst prophetes after thee. 9 Thou wast taken vp in the storme of fire, in a charet of firie horses. 10 Thou wast ordayned in the reproouinges in time, to pacifie the wrath of the Lorde before it raged, to turne the heartes of the fathers vnto the children, & to set vp the tribes of Iacob againe. 11 Blessed were they that sawe thee, and were garnished in loue, for we lyue in lyfe: but after death we shall haue no such name. 12 Elias was couered in the storme, but Elizeus was filled with his spirite: while he lyued he was afrayde of no prince, and no man might ouercome him. 13 There coulde no worde deceaue him, and after his death his body prophecied. 14 He did wonders in his lyfe, & in death were his workes maruaylous. 15 For all this the people amended not, neither departed they from their sinnes, tyll they were caryed away prisoners out of the lande, and were scattered abrode in all countries, so that of them there remayned but a very litle people, and a prince vnto the house of Dauid. 16 Howbeit some of them did right, and some heaped vp vngodlynes. 17 Ezechias made his citie strong, conueyed water into it, digged through the stony rocke with iron, and made vp a wall by the water side. 18 In his time came Sennacherib vp, and sent Rabsakes, lyft vp his hande against Sion, & defied them with great pride. 19 Then trembled their heartes and handes, so that they sorowed lyke a woman trauayling with childe. 20 So they called vpon the Lord which is mercifull, and lyft vp their handes before him, immediately the Lorde heard them out of heauen. 21 He thought no more vpon their sinnes, nor gaue them ouer to their enemies: but deliuered them by the hande of Esaias. 22 He smote the hoast of the Assyrians, and his angel destroyed them. 23 For Ezechias had done the thing that pleased the Lorde, and remayned stedfastly in the way of Dauid his father, as Esaias the great & faithfull prophete in the sight of God had commaunded him. 24 In his time the sunne went backward, and he lengthened the kinges lyfe. 25 With a right spirite prophecied he what shoulde come to passe at the last: and to such as were sorowfull in Sion, he gaue consolation, wherewith they might comfort them selues for euermore. 26 He shewed thinges that were for to come and secrete, or euer they come to passe.
DouayRheims(i) 1 AND Elias the prophet stood up, as a fire, and his word burnt like a torch. 2 He brought a famine upon them, and they that provoked him in their envy, were reduced to a small number, for they could not endure the commandments of the Lord. 3 By the word of the Lord he shut up the heaven, and he brought down fire from heaven thrice. 4 Thus was Elias magnified in his wondrous works. And who can glory like to thee? 5 Who raisedst up a dead man from below, from the lot of death, by the word of the Lord God. 6 Who broughtest down kings to destruction, and brokest easily their power in pieces, and the glorious from their bed. 7 Who heardest judgment in Sina, and in Horeb the judgments of vengeance. 8 Who anointedst kings to penance, and madest prophets successors after thee. 9 Who wast taken up in a whirlwind of fire, in a chariot of fiery horses. 10 Who art registered in the judgments of times to appease the wrath of the Lord, to reconcile the heart of the father to the son, and to restore the tribes of Jacob. 11 Blessed are they that saw thee, and were honoured with thy friendship. 12 For we live only in our life, but after death our name shall not be such. 13 Elias was indeed covered with the whirlwind, and his spirit was filled up in Eliseus: in his days he feared not the prince, and no man was more powerful than he. 14 No word could overcome him, and after death his body prophesied. 15 In his life he did great wonders, and is death he wrought miracles. 16 For all this the people repented not, neither did they depart from their sins till they were cast out of their land, and were scattered through all the earth. 17 And there was left but a small people, and a prince in the house of David. 18 Some of these did that which pleased God: but others committed many sine. 19 Ezechias fortified his city, and brought in water into the midst thereof, and he digged a rock with iron, and made a well for water. 20 In his days Sennacherib came up, and sent Rabsaces, and lifted up his hand against them, and he stretched out his hand against Sion, and became proud through his power. 21 Then their hearts and hands trembled, and they were in pain as women in travail. 22 And they called upon the Lord who is merciful, and spreading their hands, they lifted them up to heaven: and the holy Lord God quickly heard their voice. 23 He was not mindful of their sins, neither did he deliver them up to their enemies, but he purified them by the hand of Isaias, the holy prophet. 24 He overthrew the army of the Assyrians, and the angel of the Lord destroyed them. 25 For Ezechias did that which pleased God, and walked valiantly in the way of David his father, which Isaias, the great prophet, and faithful in the sight of God, had commanded him. 26 In his days the sun went backward, and he lengthened the king's life. 27 With a great spirit he saw the things that are to come to pass at last, and comforted the mourners in Sion. 28 He shewed what should come to pass for ever, and secret things before they came.
KJV(i) 1 Then stood up Elias the prophet as fire, and his word burned like a lamp. 2 He brought a sore famine upon them, and by his zeal he diminished their number. 3 By the word of the Lord he shut up the heaven, and also three times brought down fire. 4 O Elias, how wast thou honoured in thy wondrous deeds! and who may glory like unto thee! 5 Who didst raise up a dead man from death, and his soul from the place of the dead, by the word of the most High: 6 Who broughtest kings to destruction, and honorable men from their bed: 7 Who heardest the rebuke of the Lord in Sinai, and in Horeb the judgment of vengeance: 8 Who annointedst kings to take revenge, and prophets to succeed after him: 9 Who was taken up in a whirlwind of fire, and in a chariot of fiery horses: 10 Who wast ordained for reproofs in their times, to pacify the wrath of the Lord's judgment, before it brake forth into fury, and to turn the heart of the father unto the son, and to restore the tribes of Jacob. 11 Blessed are they that saw thee, and slept in love; for we shall surely live. 12 Elias it was, who was covered with a whirlwind: and Eliseus was filled with his spirit: whilst he lived, he was not moved with the presence of any prince, neither could any bring him into subjection. 13 No word could overcome him; and after his death his body prophesied. 14 He did wonders in his life, and at his death were his works marvellous. 15 For all this the people repented not, neither departed they from their sins, till they were spoiled and carried out of their land, and were scattered through all the earth: yet there remained a small people, and a ruler in the house of David: 16 Of whom some did that which was pleasing to God, and some multiplied sins. 17 Ezekias fortified his city, and brought in water into the midst thereof: he digged the hard rock with iron, and made wells for waters. 18 In his time Sennacherib came up, and sent Rabsaces, and lifted up his hand against Sion, and boasted proudly. 19 Then trembled their hearts and hands, and they were in pain, as women in travail. 20 But they called upon the Lord which is merciful, and stretched out their hands toward him: and immediately the Holy One heard them out of heaven, and delivered them by the ministry of Esay. 21 He smote the host of the Assyrians, and his angel destroyed them. 22 For Ezekias had done the thing that pleased the Lord, and was strong in the ways of David his father, as Esay the prophet, who was great and faithful in his vision, had commanded him. 23 In his time the sun went backward, and he lengthened the king's life. 24 He saw by an excellent spirit what should come to pass at the last, and he comforted them that mourned in Sion. 25 He shewed what should come to pass for ever, and secret things or ever they came.

ERV(i) 1 Also there arose Elijah the prophet as fire, And his word burned like a torch: 2 Who brought a famine upon them, And by his zeal made them few in number. 3 By the word of the Lord he shut up the heaven: Thrice did he thus bring down fire. 4 How wast thou glorified, O Elijah, in thy wondrous deeds! And who shall glory like unto thee? 5 Who did raise up a dead man from death, And from the place of the dead, by the word of the Most High: 6 Who brought down kings to destruction, And honourable men from their bed: 7 Who heard rebuke in Sinai, And judgements of vengeance in Horeb: 8 Who anointed kings for retribution, And prophets to succeed after him: 9 Who was taken up in a tempest of fire, In a chariot of fiery horses: 10 Who was recorded for reproofs in their seasons, To pacify anger, before it brake forth into wrath; To turn the heart of the father unto the son, And to restore the tribes of Jacob. 11 Blessed are they that saw thee, And they that have been beautified with love; For we also shall surely live. 12 Elijah [it was,] who was wrapped in a tempest: And Elisha was filled with his spirit; And in [all] his days he was not moved by [the fear of] any ruler, And no one brought him into subjection. 13 Nothing was too high for him; And when he was laid on sleep his body prophesied. 14 As in his life he did wonders, So in death were his works marvellous. 15 For all this the people repented not, And they departed not from their sins, Till they were carried away as a spoil from their land, And were scattered through all the earth; And the people was left very few in number, And a ruler [was left] in the house of David. 16 Some of them did that which was pleasing [to God,] And some multiplied sins. 17 Hezekiah fortified his city, And brought in water into the midst of them: He digged the sheer rock with iron, And builded up wells for waters. 18 In his days Sennacherib came up, And sent Rabshakeh, and departed; And he lifted up his hand against Sion, And boasted great things in his arrogancy. 19 Then were their hearts and their hands shaken, And they were in pain, as women in travail; 20 And they called upon the Lord which is merciful, Spreading forth their hands unto him: And the Holy One heard them speedily out of Heaven, And delivered them by the hand of Isaiah. 21 He smote the camp of the Assyrians, And his angel utterly destroyed them. 22 For Hezekiah did that which was pleasing to the Lord, And was strong in the ways of David his father, Which Isaiah the prophet commanded, Who was great and faithful in his vision. 23 In his days the sun went backward; And he added life to the king. 24 He saw by an excellent spirit what should come to pass at the last; And he comforted them that mourned in Sion. 25 He shewed the things that should be to the end of time, And the hidden things or ever they came.

LXX2012(i) 1 Then stood up Elias the prophet as fire, and his word burned like a lamp. 2 He brought a sore famine upon them, and by his zeal he diminished their number. 3 By the word of the Lord he shut up the heaven, and also three times brought down fire. 4 O Elias, how was you honored in your wondrous deeds! and who may glory like to you! 5 Who did raise up a dead man from death, and his soul from the place of the dead, by the word of the most High: 6 Who brought kings to destruction, and honorably men from their bed: 7 Who heard the rebuke of the Lord in Sinai, and in Horeb the judgment of vengeance: 8 Who anointed kings to take revenge, and prophets to succeed after him: 9 Who was taken up in a whirlwind of fire, and in a chariot of fiery horses: 10 Who was ordained for reproofs in their times, to pacify the wrath of the Lord's judgment, before it brake forth into fury, and to turn the heart of the father to the son, and to restore the tribes of Jacob. 11 Blessed are they that saw you, and slept in love; for we shall surely live. 12 Elias it was, who was covered with a whirlwind: and Eliseus was filled with his spirit: while he lived, he was not moved with the presence of any prince, neither could any bring him into subjection. 13 No word could overcome him; and after his death his body prophesied. 14 He did wonders in his life, and at his death were his works marvelous. 21 He struck the host of the Assyrians, and his angel destroyed them. 25 He showed what should come to pass for ever, and secret things or ever they came.
