1 Samuel 7 And the men of Kirjathjearim came , and fetched up the ark of the LORD , and brought it into the house of Abinadab in the hill , and sanctified Eleazar his son to keep the ark of the LORD.

2 H3117 And it came to pass, while H727 the ark H3427 abode [H8800] H7157 in Kirjathjearim H3117 , that the time H7235 was long [H8799] H6242 ; for it was twenty H8141 years H1004 : and all the house H3478 of Israel H5091 lamented [H8735] H310 after H3068 the LORD.

3 H8050 And Samuel H559 spake [H8799] H1004 unto all the house H3478 of Israel H559 , saying [H8800] H7725 , If ye do return [H8802] H3068 unto the LORD H3824 with all your hearts H5493 , then put away [H8685] H5236 the strange H430 gods H6252 and Ashtaroth H8432 from among H3559 you, and prepare [H8685] H3824 your hearts H3068 unto the LORD H5647 , and serve [H8798] H5337 him only: and he will deliver [H8686] H3027 you out of the hand H6430 of the Philistines.

4 H1121 Then the children H3478 of Israel H5493 did put away [H8686] H1168 Baalim H6252 and Ashtaroth H5647 , and served [H8799] H3068 the LORD only.

5 H8050 And Samuel H559 said [H8799] H6908 , Gather [H8798] H3478 all Israel H4708 to Mizpeh H6419 , and I will pray [H8691] H3068 for you unto the LORD.

6 H6908 And they gathered together [H8735] H4709 to Mizpeh H7579 , and drew [H8799] H4325 water H8210 , and poured it out [H8799] H6440 before H3068 the LORD H6684 , and fasted [H8799] H3117 on that day H559 , and said [H8799] H2398 there, We have sinned [H8804] H3068 against the LORD H8050 . And Samuel H8199 judged [H8799] H1121 the children H3478 of Israel H4708 in Mizpeh.

7 H6430 And when the Philistines H8085 heard [H8799] H1121 that the children H3478 of Israel H6908 were gathered together [H8694] H4708 to Mizpeh H5633 , the lords H6430 of the Philistines H5927 went up [H8799] H3478 against Israel H1121 . And when the children H3478 of Israel H8085 heard [H8799] H3372 it, they were afraid [H8799] H6440 of H6430 the Philistines.

8 H1121 And the children H3478 of Israel H559 said [H8799] H8050 to Samuel H2790 , Cease [H8686] H2199 not to cry [H8800] H3068 unto the LORD H430 our God H3467 for us, that he will save [H8686] H3027 us out of the hand H6430 of the Philistines.

9 H8050 And Samuel H3947 took [H8799] H259 a H2461 sucking H2924 lamb H5927 , and offered [H8686] H5930 it for a burnt offering H3632 wholly H3068 unto the LORD H8050 : and Samuel H2199 cried [H8799] H3068 unto the LORD H3478 for Israel H3068 ; and the LORD H6030 heard [H8799] him.

10 H8050 And as Samuel H5927 was offering up [H8688] H5930 the burnt offering H6430 , the Philistines H5066 drew near [H8738] H4421 to battle H3478 against Israel H3068 : but the LORD H7481 thundered [H8686] H1419 with a great H6963 thunder H3117 on that day H6430 upon the Philistines H2000 , and discomfited [H8799] H5062 them; and they were smitten [H8735] H6440 before H3478 Israel.

11 H582 And the men H3478 of Israel H3318 went out [H8799] H4709 of Mizpeh H7291 , and pursued [H8799] H6430 the Philistines H5221 , and smote [H8686] H1033 them, until they came under Bethcar.

12 H8050 Then Samuel H3947 took [H8799] H259 a H68 stone H7760 , and set [H8799] H4709 it between Mizpeh H8129 and Shen H7121 , and called [H8799] H8034 the name H72 of it Ebenezer H559 , saying [H8799] H3068 , Hitherto hath the LORD H5826 helped [H8804] us.

13 H6430 So the Philistines H3665 were subdued [H8735] H935 , and they came [H8800] H3254 no more [H8804] H1366 into the coast H3478 of Israel H3027 : and the hand H3068 of the LORD H6430 was against the Philistines H3117 all the days H8050 of Samuel.

14 H5892 And the cities H6430 which the Philistines H3947 had taken [H8804] H3478 from Israel H7725 were restored [H8799] H3478 to Israel H6138 , from Ekron H1661 even unto Gath H1366 ; and the coasts H3478 thereof did Israel H5337 deliver [H8689] H3027 out of the hands H6430 of the Philistines H7965 . And there was peace H3478 between Israel H567 and the Amorites.

15 H8050 And Samuel H8199 judged [H8799] H3478 Israel H3117 all the days H2416 of his life.

16 H1980 And he went [H8804] H1767 from H8141 year H8141 to year H5437 in circuit [H8804] H1008 to Bethel H1537 , and Gilgal H4709 , and Mizpeh H8199 , and judged [H8804] H3478 Israel H4725 in all those places.

17 H8666 And his return H7414 was to Ramah H1004 ; for there was his house H8199 ; and there he judged [H8804] H3478 Israel H1129 ; and there he built [H8799] H4196 an altar H3068 unto the LORD.

And Samuel judged the children of Israel in Mizpeh. ⁷ And when the Philistines heard that the children of Israel were gathered together to Mizpeh, the lords of the Philistines went up against Israel. And when the children of Israel heard it, they were afraid of the Philistines. ⁸ And the children of Israel said to Samuel, Cease not to cry unto the LORD our God for us, that he will save us out of the hand of the Philistines. ⁹ And Samuel took a sucking lamb, and offered it for a burnt offering wholly unto the LORD: and Samuel cried unto the LORD for Israel; and the LORD heard him. ¹⁰ And as Samuel was offering up the burnt offering, the Philistines drew near to battle against Israel: but the LORD thundered with a great thunder on that day upon the Philistines, and discomfited them; and they were smitten before Israel. ¹¹ And the men of Israel went out of Mizpeh, and pursued the Philistines, and smote them, until they came under Bethcar. ¹² Then Samuel took a stone, and set it between Mizpeh and Shen, and called the name of it Ebenezer, saying, Hitherto hath the LORD helped us. ¹³ So the Philistines were subdued, and they came no more into the coast of Israel: and the hand of the LORD was against the Philistines all the days of Samuel. ¹⁴ And the cities which the Philistines had taken from Israel were restored to Israel, from Ekron even unto Gath; and the coasts thereof did Israel deliver out of the hands of the Philistines. And there was peace between Israel and the Amorites. ¹⁵ And Samuel judged Israel all the days of his life. ¹⁶ And he went from year to year in circuit to Bethel, and Gilgal, and Mizpeh, and judged Israel in all those places. ¹⁷ And his return was to Ramah; for there was his house; and there he judged Israel; and there he built an altar unto the LORD.
