Nehemiah 13

H3117 On that day H7121 they read [H8738]   H5612 in the book H4872 of Moses H241 in the audience H5971 of the people H4672 ; and therein was found [H8738]   H3789 written [H8803]   H5984 , that the Ammonite H4125 and the Moabite H935 should not come [H8799]   H6951 into the congregation H430 of God H5704 for H5769 ever;
H6923 Because they met [H8765]   H1121 not the children H3478 of Israel H3899 with bread H4325 and with water H7936 , but hired [H8799]   H1109 Balaam H7043 against them, that he should curse [H8763]   H430 them: howbeit our God H2015 turned [H8799]   H7045 the curse H1293 into a blessing.
H8085 Now it came to pass, when they had heard [H8800]   H8451 the law H914 , that they separated [H8686]   H3478 from Israel H6154 all the mixed multitude.
H6440 And before H475 this, Eliashib H3548 the priest H5414 , having the oversight [H8803]   H3957 of the chamber H1004 of the house H430 of our God H7138 , was allied H2900 unto Tobiah:
H6213 And he had prepared [H8799]   H1419 for him a great H3957 chamber H6440 , where aforetime H5414 they laid [H8802]   H4503 the meat offerings H3828 , the frankincense H3627 , and the vessels H4643 , and the tithes H1715 of the corn H8492 , the new wine H3323 , and the oil H4687 , which was commanded H3881 to be given to the Levites H7891 , and the singers [H8789]   H7778 , and the porters H8641 ; and the offerings H3548 of the priests.
H3389 But in all this time was not I at Jerusalem H8147 : for in the two H7970 and thirtieth H8141 year H783 of Artaxerxes H4428 king H894 of Babylon H935 came [H8804]   H4428 I unto the king H7093 , and after H3117 certain days H7592 obtained I leave [H8738]   H4428 of the king:
H935 And I came [H8799]   H3389 to Jerusalem H995 , and understood [H8799]   H7451 of the evil H475 that Eliashib H6213 did [H8804]   H2900 for Tobiah H6213 , in preparing [H8800]   H5393 him a chamber H2691 in the courts H1004 of the house H430 of God.
H3415 And it grieved [H8799]   H3966 me sore H7993 : therefore I cast forth [H8686]   H1004 all the household H3627 stuff H2900 of Tobiah H2351 out of H3957 the chamber.
H559 Then I commanded [H8799]   H2891 , and they cleansed [H8762]   H3957 the chambers H7725 : and thither brought I again [H8686]   H3627 the vessels H1004 of the house H430 of God H4503 , with the meat offering H3828 and the frankincense.
H3045 And I perceived [H8799]   H4521 that the portions H3881 of the Levites H5414 had not been given [H8738]   H3881 them : for the Levites H7891 and the singers [H8789]   H6213 , that did [H8802]   H4399 the work H1272 , were fled [H8799]   H376 every one H7704 to his field.
H7378 Then contended [H8799]   H5461 I with the rulers H559 , and said [H8799]   H1004 , Why is the house H430 of God H5800 forsaken [H8738]   H6908 ? And I gathered them together [H8762]   H5975 , and set [H8686]   H5977 them in their place.
H935 Then brought [H8689]   H3063 all Judah H4643 the tithe H1715 of the corn H8492 and the new wine H3323 and the oil H214 unto the treasuries.
H686 And I made treasurers [H8799]   H214 over the treasuries H8018 , Shelemiah H3548 the priest H6659 , and Zadok H5608 the scribe [H8802]   H3881 , and of the Levites H6305 , Pedaiah H3027 : and next to them H2605 was Hanan H1121 the son H2139 of Zaccur H1121 , the son H4983 of Mattaniah H2803 : for they were counted [H8738]   H539 faithful [H8737]   H2505 , and their office was to distribute [H8800]   H251 unto their brethren.
H2142 Remember [H8798]   H430 me, O my God H4229 , concerning this, and wipe not out [H8686]   H2617 my good H6213 deeds that I have done [H8804]   H1004 for the house H430 of my God H4929 , and for the offices thereof.
H3117 In those days H7200 saw [H8804]   H3063 I in Judah H1869 some treading [H8802]   H1660 wine presses H7676 on the sabbath H935 , and bringing in [H8688]   H6194 sheaves H6006 , and lading [H8802]   H2543 asses H3196 ; as also wine H6025 , grapes H8384 , and figs H4853 , and all manner of burdens H935 , which they brought [H8688]   H3389 into Jerusalem H7676 on the sabbath H3117 day H5749 : and I testified [H8686]   H3117 against them in the day H4376 wherein they sold [H8800]   H6718 victuals.
H3427 There dwelt [H8804]   H6876 men of Tyre H935 also therein, which brought [H8688]   H1709 fish [H8675]   H1709   H4377 , and all manner of ware H4376 , and sold [H8802]   H7676 on the sabbath H1121 unto the children H3063 of Judah H3389 , and in Jerusalem.
H7378 Then I contended [H8799]   H2715 with the nobles H3063 of Judah H559 , and said [H8799]   H7451 unto them, What evil H1697 thing H6213 is this that ye do [H8802]   H2490 , and profane [H8764]   H7676 the sabbath H3117 day?
H6213 Did [H8804]   H1 not your fathers H935 thus, and did H430 not our God H935 bring [H8686]   H7451 all this evil H5892 upon us, and upon this city H935 ? yet ye bring [H8686]   H3254 more [H8688]   H2740 wrath H3478 upon Israel H2490 by profaning [H8763]   H7676 the sabbath.
H8179 And it came to pass, that when the gates H3389 of Jerusalem H6751 began to be dark [H8804]   H6440 before H7676 the sabbath H559 , I commanded [H8799]   H1817 that the gates H5462 should be shut [H8735]   H559 , and charged [H8799]   H6605 that they should not be opened [H8799]   H310 till after H7676 the sabbath H5288 : and some of my servants H5975 set [H8689]   H8179 I at the gates H4853 , that there should no burden H935 be brought in [H8799]   H7676 on the sabbath H3117 day.
H7402 So the merchants [H8802]   H4376 and sellers [H8802]   H4465 of all kind of ware H3885 lodged [H8799]   H2351 without H3389 Jerusalem H6471 once H8147 or twice.
H5749 Then I testified [H8686]   H559 against them, and said [H8799]   H3885 unto them, Why lodge [H8801]   H5048 ye about H2346 the wall H8138 ? if ye do so again [H8799]   H7971 , I will lay [H8799]   H3027 hands H6256 on you. From that time H935 forth came [H8804]   H7676 they no more on the sabbath.
H559 And I commanded [H8799]   H3881 the Levites H2891 that they should cleanse [H8693]   H935 themselves, and that they should come [H8802]   H8104 and keep [H8802]   H8179 the gates H6942 , to sanctify [H8763]   H7676 the sabbath H3117 day H2142 . Remember [H8798]   H430 me, O my God H2347 , concerning this also, and spare [H8798]   H7230 me according to the greatness H2617 of thy mercy.
H3117 In those days H7200 also saw [H8804]   H3064 I Jews H3427 that had married [H8689]   H802 wives H796 of Ashdod H5984 , of Ammon H4125 , and of Moab:
H1121 And their children H1696 spake [H8764]   H2677 half H797 in the speech of Ashdod H5234 , and could [H8688]   H1696 not speak [H8763]   H3066 in the Jews' language H3956 , but according to the language H5971 of each H5971 people.
H7378 And I contended [H8799]   H7043 with them, and cursed [H8762]   H5221 them, and smote [H8686]   H582 certain H4803 of them, and plucked off their hair [H8799]   H7650 , and made them swear [H8686]   H430 by God H5414 , saying, Ye shall not give [H8799]   H1323 your daughters H1121 unto their sons H5375 , nor take [H8799]   H1323 their daughters H1121 unto your sons, or for yourselves.
H8010 Did not Solomon H4428 king H3478 of Israel H2398 sin [H8804]   H7227 by these things? yet among many H1471 nations H4428 was there no king H157 like him, who was beloved [H8803]   H430 of his God H430 , and God H5414 made [H8799]   H4428 him king H3478 over all Israel H1571 : nevertheless even him H5237 did outlandish H802 women H2398 cause to sin [H8689]  .
H8085 Shall we then hearken [H8799]   H6213 unto you to do [H8800]   H1419 all this great H7451 evil H4603 , to transgress [H8800]   H430 against our God H3427 in marrying [H8687]   H5237 strange H802 wives?
H1121 And one of the sons H3111 of Joiada H1121 , the son H475 of Eliashib H1419 the high H3548 priest H2860 , was son in law H5571 to Sanballat H2772 the Horonite H1272 : therefore I chased [H8686]   him from me.
H2142 Remember [H8798]   H430 them, O my God H1352 , because they have defiled H3550 the priesthood H1285 , and the covenant H3550 of the priesthood H3881 , and of the Levites.
H2891 Thus cleansed [H8765]   H5236 I them from all strangers H5975 , and appointed [H8686]   H4931 the wards H3548 of the priests H3881 and the Levites H376 , every one H4399 in his business;
H6086 And for the wood H7133 offering H6256 , at times H2163 appointed [H8794]   H1061 , and for the firstfruits H2142 . Remember [H8798]   H430 me, O my God H2896 , for good.
ERV(i) 1 On that day they read in the book of Moses in the audience of the people; and therein was found written, that an Ammonite and a Moabite should not enter into the assembly of God for ever; 2 because they met not the children of Israel with bread and with water, but hired Balaam against them, to curse them: howbeit our God turned the curse into a blessing. 3 And it came to pass, when they had heard the law, that they separated from Israel all the mixed multitude. 4 Now before this, Eliashib the priest, who was appointed over the chambers of the house of our God, being allied unto Tobiah, 5 had prepared for him a great chamber, where aforetime they laid the meal offerings, the frankincense, and the vessels, and the tithes of the corn, the wine, and the oil, which were given by commandment to the Levites, and the singers, and the porters; and the heave offerings for the priests. 6 But in all this [time] I was not at Jerusalem: for in the two and thirtieth year of Artaxerxes king of Babylon I went unto the king, and after certain days asked I leave of the king: 7 and I came to Jerusalem, and understood of the evil that Eliashib had done for Tobiah, in preparing him a chamber in the courts of the house of God. 8 And it grieved me sore: therefore I cast forth all the household stuff of Tobiah out of the chamber. 9 Then I commanded, and they cleansed the chambers: and thither brought I again the vessels of the house of God, with the meal offerings and the frankincense. 10 And I perceived that the portions of the Levites had not been given them; so that the Levites and the singers, that did the work, were fled every one to his field. 11 Then contended I with the rulers, and said, Why is the house of God forsaken? And I gathered them together, and set them in their place. 12 Then brought all Judah the tithe of the corn and the wine and the oil unto the treasuries. 13 And I made treasurers over the treasuries, Shelemiah the priest, and Zadok the scribe, and of the Levites, Pedaiah: and next to them was Hanan the son of Zaccur, the son of Mattaniah: for they were counted faithful, and their business was to distribute unto their brethren. 14 Remember me, O my God, concerning this, and wipe not out my good deeds that I have done for the house of my God, and for the observances thereof. 15 In those days saw I in Judah some treading winepresses on the sabbath, and bringing in sheaves, and lading asses [therewith]; as also wine, grapes, and figs, and all manner of burdens, which they brought into Jerusalem on the sabbath day: and I testified [against them] in the day wherein they sold victuals. 16 There dwelt men of Tyre also therein, which brought in fish, and all manner of ware, and sold on the sabbath unto the children of Judah, and in Jerusalem. 17 Then I contended with the nobles of Judah, and said unto them, What evil thing is this that ye do, and profane the sabbath day? 18 Did not your fathers thus, and did not our God bring all this evil upon us, and upon this city? yet ye bring more wrath upon Israel by profaning the sabbath. 19 And it came to pass that, when the gates of Jerusalem began to be dark before the sabbath, I commanded that the doors should be shut, and commanded that they should not be opened till after the sabbath: and some of my servants set I over the gates, that there should no burden be brought in on the sabbath day. 20 So the merchants and sellers of all kind of ware lodged without Jerusalem once or twice. 21 Then I testified against them, and said unto them, Why lodge ye about the wall? if ye do so again, I will lay hands on you. From that time forth came they no more on the sabbath. 22 And I commanded the Levites that they should purify themselves, and that they should come and keep the gates, to sanctify the sabbath day. Remember unto me, O my God, this also, and spare me according to the greatness of thy mercy. 23 In those days also saw I the Jews that had married women of Ashdod, of Ammon, [and] of Moab: 24 and their children spake half in the speech of Ashdod, and could not speak in the Jews’ language, but according to the language of each people. 25 And I contended with them, and cursed them, and smote certain of them, and plucked off their hair, and made them swear by God, [saying], Ye shall not give your daughters unto their sons, nor take their daughters for your sons, or for yourselves. 26 Did not Solomon king of Israel sin by these things? yet among many nations was there no king like him, and he was beloved of his God, and God made him king over all Israel: nevertheless even him did strange women cause to sin. 27 Shall we then hearken unto you to do all this great evil, to trespass against our God in marrying strange women? 28 And one of the sons of Joiada, the son of Eliashib the high priest, was son in law to Sanballat the Horonite: therefore I chased him from me. 29 Remember them, O my God, because they have defiled the priesthood, and the covenant of the priesthood, and of the Levites. 30 Thus cleansed I them from all strangers, and appointed wards for the priests and for the Levites, every one in his work; 31 and for the wood offering, at times appointed, and for the firstfruits. Remember me, O my God, for good.
