2 Chronicles 10 And Rehoboam went to Shechem : for to Shechem were all Israel come to make him king .

2 H3379 And it came to pass, when Jeroboam H1121 the son H5028 of Nebat H4714 , who was in Egypt H1272 , whither he had fled [H8804] H6440 from the presence H8010 of Solomon H4428 the king H8085 , heard [H8800] H3379 it, that Jeroboam H7725 returned [H8799] H4714 out of Egypt.

3 H7971 And they sent [H8799] H7121 and called [H8799] H3379 him. So Jeroboam H3478 and all Israel H935 came [H8799] H1696 and spake [H8762] H7346 to Rehoboam H559 , saying [H8800] ,

4 H1 Thy father H5923 made our yoke H7185 grievous [H8689] H7043 : now therefore ease [H8685] H7186 thou somewhat the grievous H5656 servitude H1 of thy father H3515 , and his heavy H5923 yoke H5414 that he put [H8804] H5647 upon us, and we will serve [H8799] thee.

5 H559 And he said [H8799] H7725 unto them, Come again [H8798] H7969 unto me after three H3117 days H5971 . And the people H3212 departed [H8799] .

6 H4428 And king H7346 Rehoboam H3289 took counsel [H8735] H2205 with the old H5975 men that had stood [H8802] H6440 before H8010 Solomon H1 his father H2416 while he yet lived H559 , saying [H8800] H349 , What H3289 counsel give [H8737] H7725 ye me to return [H8687] H1697 answer H5971 to this people?

7 H1696 And they spake [H8762] H559 unto him, saying [H8800] H2896 , If thou be kind H5971 to this people H7521 , and please [H8804] H1696 them, and speak [H8765] H2896 good H1697 words H5650 to them, they will be thy servants H3117 for ever.

8 H5800 But he forsook [H8799] H6098 the counsel H2205 which the old men H3289 gave [H8804] H3289 him, and took counsel [H8735] H3206 with the young men H1431 that were brought up [H8804] H5975 with him, that stood [H8802] H6440 before him.

9 H559 And he said [H8799] H3289 unto them, What advice [H8737] H7725 give ye that we may return [H8686] H1697 answer H5971 to this people H1696 , which have spoken [H8765] H559 to me, saying [H8800] H7043 , Ease [H8685] H5923 somewhat the yoke H1 that thy father H5414 did put [H8804] upon us?

10 H3206 And the young men H1431 that were brought up [H8804] H1696 with him spake [H8762] H559 unto him, saying [H8800] H559 , Thus shalt thou answer [H8799] H5971 the people H1696 that spake [H8765] H559 unto thee, saying [H8800] H1 , Thy father H3513 made H5923 our yoke H3513 heavy [H8689] H7043 , but make thou it somewhat lighter [H8685] H559 for us; thus shalt thou say [H8799] H6995 unto them, My little H5666 finger shall be thicker [H8804] H1 than my father's H4975 loins.

11 H6258 For whereas H1 my father H6006 put [H8689] H3515 a heavy H5923 yoke H3254 upon you, I will put more [H8686] H5923 to your yoke H1 : my father H3256 chastised [H8765] H7752 you with whips H6137 , but I will chastise you with scorpions.

12 H3379 So Jeroboam H5971 and all the people H935 came [H8799] H7346 to Rehoboam H7992 on the third H3117 day H4428 , as the king H1696 bade [H8765] H559 , saying [H8800] H7725 , Come again [H8798] H7992 to me on the third H3117 day.

13 H4428 And the king H6030 answered [H8799] H7186 them roughly H4428 ; and king H7346 Rehoboam H5800 forsook [H8799] H6098 the counsel H2205 of the old men,

14 H1696 And answered [H8762] H6098 them after the advice H3206 of the young men H559 , saying [H8800] H1 , My father H5923 made your yoke H3513 heavy [H8689] H3254 , but I will add [H8686] H1 thereto: my father H3256 chastised [H8765] H7752 you with whips H6137 , but I will chastise you with scorpions.

15 H4428 So the king H8085 hearkened [H8804] H5971 not unto the people H5252 : for the cause H430 was of God H3068 , that the LORD H6965 might perform [H8687] H1697 his word H1696 , which he spake [H8765] H3027 by the hand H281 of Ahijah H7888 the Shilonite H3379 to Jeroboam H1121 the son H5028 of Nebat.

16 H3478 And when all Israel H7200 saw [H8804] H4428 that the king H8085 would not hearken [H8804] H5971 unto them, the people H7725 answered [H8686] H4428 the king H559 , saying [H8800] H2506 , What portion H1732 have we in David H5159 ? and we have none inheritance H1121 in the son H3448 of Jesse H376 : every man H168 to your tents H3478 , O Israel H1732 : and now, David H7200 , see [H8798] H1004 to thine own house H3478 . So all Israel H3212 went [H8799] H168 to their tents.

17 H1121 But as for the children H3478 of Israel H3427 that dwelt [H8802] H5892 in the cities H3063 of Judah H7346 , Rehoboam H4427 reigned [H8799] over them.

18 H4428 Then king H7346 Rehoboam H7971 sent [H8799] H1913 Hadoram H4522 that was over the tribute H1121 ; and the children H3478 of Israel H7275 stoned [H8799] H68 him with stones H4191 , that he died [H8799] H4428 . But king H7346 Rehoboam H553 made speed [H8694] H5927 to get him up [H8800] H4818 to his chariot H5127 , to flee [H8800] H3389 to Jerusalem.

19 H3478 And Israel H6586 rebelled [H8799] H1004 against the house H1732 of David H3117 unto this day.

And the people departed. ⁶ And king Rehoboam took counsel with the old men that had stood before Solomon his father while he yet lived, saying, What counsel give ye me to return answer to this people? ⁷ And they spake unto him, saying, If thou be kind to this people, and please them, and speak good words to them, they will be thy servants for ever. ⁸ But he forsook the counsel which the old men gave him, and took counsel with the young men that were brought up with him, that stood before him. ⁹ And he said unto them, What advice give ye that we may return answer to this people, which have spoken to me, saying, Ease somewhat the yoke that thy father did put upon us? ¹⁰ And the young men that were brought up with him spake unto him, saying, Thus shalt thou answer the people that spake unto thee, saying, Thy father made our yoke heavy, but make thou it somewhat lighter for us; thus shalt thou say unto them, My little finger shall be thicker than my father's loins. ¹¹ For whereas my father put a heavy yoke upon you, I will put more to your yoke: my father chastised you with whips, but I will chastise you with scorpions. ¹² So Jeroboam and all the people came to Rehoboam on the third day, as the king bade, saying, Come again to me on the third day. ¹³ And the king answered them roughly; and king Rehoboam forsook the counsel of the old men, ¹⁴ And answered them after the advice of the young men, saying, My father made your yoke heavy, but I will add thereto: my father chastised you with whips, but I will chastise you with scorpions. ¹⁵ So the king hearkened not unto the people: for the cause was of God, that the LORD might perform his word, which he spake by the hand of Ahijah the Shilonite to Jeroboam the son of Nebat. ¹⁶ And when all Israel saw that the king would not hearken unto them, the people answered the king, saying, What portion have we in David? and we have none inheritance in the son of Jesse: every man to your tents, O Israel: and now, David, see to thine own house. So all Israel went to their tents. ¹⁷ But as for the children of Israel that dwelt in the cities of Judah, Rehoboam reigned over them. ¹⁸ Then king Rehoboam sent Hadoram that was over the tribute; and the children of Israel stoned him with stones, that he died.
