Nehemiah 8

  1 H5971 And all the people H622 [H8735] gathered themselves together H259 as one H376 man H7339 in the street H6440 that was at the face of H4325 the water H8179 gate; H559 [H8799] and they spoke H5830 to Ezra H5608 [H8802] the scribe H935 [H8687] to bring H5612 the book H8451 of the law H4872 of Moses, H3068 which the LORD H6680 [H8765] had commanded H3478 to Israel.

  2 H5830 And Ezra H3548 the priest H935 [H8686] brought H8451 the law H6440 at the face of H6951 the congregation H376 both of men H802 and women, H8085 [H8800] and all that could hear H995 [H8688] with understanding, H259 upon the first H3117 day H7637 of the seventh H2320 month.

  3 H7121 [H8799] And he read H6440 in it at the face of H7339 the street H6440 that was at the face of H4325 the water H8179 gate H216 from the light H4276 H3117 until midday, H582 before the men H802 and the women, H995 [H8688] and those that could understand; H241 and the ears H5971 of all the people H5612 were attentive to the book H8451 of the law.

  4 H5830 And Ezra H5608 [H8802] the scribe H5975 [H8799] stood H4026 upon a pulpit H6086 of wood, H6213 [H8804] which they had made H1697 for the purpose; H681 and beside H5975 [H8799] him stood H4993 Mattithiah, H8087 and Shema, H6043 and Anaiah, H223 and Urijah, H2518 and Hilkiah, H4641 and Maaseiah, H3225 on his right hand; H8040 and on his left hand, H6305 Pedaiah, H4332 and Mishael, H4441 and Malchiah, H2828 and Hashum, H2806 and Hashbadana, H2148 Zechariah, H4918 and Meshullam.

  5 H5830 And Ezra H6605 [H8799] opened H5612 the book H5869 in the eyes H5971 of all the people; H5971 (for he was above all the people; H6605 [H8800] ) and when he opened H5971 it, all the people H5975 [H8804] stood up:

  6 H5830 And Ezra H1288 [H8762] blessed H3068 the LORD, H1419 the great H430 God. H5971 And all the people H6030 [H8799] answered, H543 Amen, H543 Amen, H4607 with lifting H3027 their hands: H6915 [H8799] and they bowed H7812 [H8691] their heads, and worshipped H3068 the LORD H639 with their noses H776 to the earth.

  7 H3442 Also Jeshua, H1137 and Bani, H8274 and Sherebiah, H3226 Jamin, H6126 Akkub, H7678 Shabbethai, H1941 Hodijah, H4641 Maaseiah, H7042 Kelita, H5838 Azariah, H3107 Jozabad, H2605 Hanan, H6411 Pelaiah, H3881 and the Levites, H5971 caused the people H995 [H8688] to understand H8451 the law: H5971 and the people H5977 stood in their place.

  8 H7121 [H8799] So they read H5612 in the book H8451 in the law H430 of God H6567 [H8794] distinctly, H7760 [H8800] and gave H7922 the sense, H995 [H8799] and caused them to understand H4744 the reading.

  9 H5166 And Nehemiah, H8660 who is the Tirshatha, H5830 and Ezra H3548 the priest H5608 [H8802] the scribe, H3881 and the Levites H995 [H8688] that taught H5971 the people, H559 [H8799] said H5971 to all the people, H3117 This day H6918 is holy H3068 to the LORD H430 your God; H56 [H8691] mourn H1058 [H8799] not, nor weep. H5971 For all the people H1058 [H8802] wept, H8085 [H8800] when they heard H1697 the words H8451 of the law.

  10 H559 [H8799] Then he said H3212 [H8798] to them, Go your way, H398 [H8798] eat H4924 the fat, H8354 [H8798] and drink H4477 the sweet, H7971 [H8798] and send H4490 portions H3559 [H8737] to them for whom nothing is prepared: H3117 for this day H6918 is holy H113 to our Sovereign: H6087 [H8735] neither be ye grieved; H2304 for the joy H3068 of the LORD H4581 is your strength.

  11 H3881 So the Levites H2814 [H8688] stilled H5971 all the people, H559 [H8800] saying, H2013 [H8761] Hold your peace, H3117 for the day H6918 is holy; H6087 [H8735] neither be ye grieved.

  12 H5971 And all the people H3212 [H8799] went their way H398 [H8800] to eat, H8354 [H8800] and to drink, H7971 [H8763] and to send H4490 portions, H6213 [H8800] and to make H1419 great H8057 mirth, H995 [H8689] because they had understood H1697 the words H3045 [H8689] that were declared to them.

  13 H8145 And on the second H3117 day H622 [H8738] were gathered together H7218 the heads H1 of the fathers H5971 of all the people, H3548 the priests, H3881 and the Levites, H5830 to Ezra H5608 [H8802] the scribe, H7919 [H8687] even to understand H1697 the words H8451 of the law.

  14 H4672 [H8799] And they found H3789 [H8803] written H8451 in the law H3068 which the LORD H6680 [H8765] had commanded H3027 by H4872 Moses, H1121 that the sons H3478 of Israel H3427 [H8799] should dwell H5521 in booths H2282 in the feast H7637 of the seventh H2320 month:

  15 H8085 [H8686] And that they should declare H5674 H6963 [H8686] and proclaim H5892 in all their cities, H3389 and in Jerusalem, H559 [H8800] saying, H3318 [H8798] Go forth H2022 to the mount, H935 [H8685] and fetch H2132 olive H5929 branches, H8081 and pine H6086 H5929 branches, H1918 and myrtle H5929 branches, H8558 and palm H5929 branches, H5929 and branches H5687 of thick H6086 trees, H6213 [H8800] to make H5521 booths, H3789 [H8803] as it is written.

  16 H5971 So the people H3318 [H8799] went forth, H935 [H8686] and brought H6213 [H8799] them, and made H5521 themselves booths, H376 every one H1406 upon the roof of his house, H2691 and in their courts, H2691 and in the courts H1004 of the house H430 of God, H7339 and in the street H4325 of the water H8179 gate, H7339 and in the street H8179 of the gate H669 of Ephraim.

  17 H6951 And all the congregation H7725 [H8802] of them that had returned H7628 from the captivity H6213 [H8799] made H5521 booths, H3427 [H8799] and sat H5521 under the booths: H3117 for since the days H3442 of Joshua H1121 the son H5126 of Nun H3117 to that day H1121 had not the sons H3478 of Israel H6213 [H8804] done so. H3966 And there was very H1419 great H8057 gladness.

  18 H3117 Also day H3117 by day, H7223 from the first H3117 day H314 to the last H3117 day, H7121 [H8799] he read H5612 in the book H8451 of the law H430 of God. H6213 [H8799] And they kept H2282 the feast H7651 seven H3117 days; H8066 and on the eighth H3117 day H6116 was a solemn assembly, H4941 according to the manner.
