Judith 14
Clementine_Vulgate(i)
5 Cumque cognoveritis fugere eos, ite post illos securi, quoniam Dominus conteret eos sub pedibus vestris.

1 Forsothe Judith seide to al the puple, Britheren, here ye; hang ye this heed on youre wallis.
2 And it schal be, whanne the sunne `goith out, ech man take hise armuris, and go ye out with feersnesse, not that ye go doun binethe, but as makyng asauyt.
3 Thanne it schal be nede, that the spieris of the lond fle to reise her prynce to batel.
4 And whanne the duykis of hem rennen togidere to the tabernacle of Holofernes, and fynden hym heedles, waltrid in his blood, dreed schal falle doun on hem.
5 And whanne ye knowen that thei fleen, go ye sikirli aftir hem, for God schal al to-breke hem vndur youre feet.
6 Thanne Achior siy the vertu that God of Israel hadde do, and he forsook the custom of hethenesse, and bileuede to God; and he circumcidede the fleisch of his yerde, and he was put to the puple of Israel, and al the aftircomyng of his kyn `til in to this dai.
7 Forsothe anoon as the dai roos, thei hangiden the heed of Holofernes on the wallis; and ech man took his armuris, and thei yeden out with grete noise and yellyng.
8 Which thing the aspieris sien, and runnen to the tabernacle of Holofernes.
9 Certis thei, that weren in the tabernacle, camen, and maden noise bifore the entryng of the bed, and ymagyneden by craft vnrestfulnesse for cause of reisyng, that Holofernes schulde awake not of the reiseris, but of sowneris.
10 For no man was hardi to opene the tabernacle of the vertu of Assiriens bi knockyng ethir bi entryng.
11 But whanne hise duykis, and tribunes, and alle the grettere men of the oost of the kyng of Assiriens weren comen, thei seiden to the chaumburleyns, Entre ye, and reise ye hym;
12 for myis ben goon out of her caues, and doren excite vs to batel.
13 Thanne Vagao entride in to his closet, and stood bifor the curtyn, and made betyng togidere with hise hondis; for he supposide hym to slepe with Judith.
14 But whanne he perseyuede not `with wit of eeris ony stiryng of Holofernes liggynge, he cam neiyynge to the curtyn, and he `reiside it, and siy the deed bodi with out the heed `of Holofernes `maad slow in his blood ligge on the erthe, and he criede bi grete vois with weping, and to-rente hise clothis.
15 And he entride in to the tabernacle of Judith, and foond not hir, and he skippide out to the puple,
16 and seide, Oon Ebrew womman hath maad confusioun in the hows of kyng Nabugodonosor; for lo! Holofernes liggith in the erthe, and his heed is not in hym.
17 And whanne the prynces of the vertu of Assiriens hadden herd this thing, alle thei to-renten her clothis, and vnsuffrable drede and tremblyng felde doun on hem, and her soulis weren troblid greetli.
18 And `vncomparable cry was maad `bi the myddil of her tentis.

1 Then said Iudeth vnto them, Heare me also, my brethren, and take this head, and hang it vpon the hyest place of your walles.
2 And so soone as the morning shall appeare and the sunne shall come foorth vpon the earth, take you euery one his weapons, and goe foorth euery valiant man out of the citie, & set you a captaine ouer them, as though you woulde goe downe into the fielde, towarde the watch of the Assyrians, but goe not downe.
3 Then they shall take their armour, and shall goe into their campe, and rayse vp the captaines of the armie of Assur, and they shall runne to the tent of Olofernes, but shall not finde him: then feare shall fall vpon them, and they shall flee beforeyour face.
4 So you & all that inhabite the coastes of Israel, shal pursue them, & ouerthrow them as they go.
5 But before you doe these things, call mee Achior the Ammonite, that hee may see, and knowe him that despised the house of Israel, and that sent him to vs as to death.
6 Then they called Achior out of the house of Ozias, and when hee was come and sawe the head of Olofernes in a certaine mans hand in the assemblie of the people, hee fell downe on his face, and his spirit failed.
7 But when they had taken him vp, hee fell at Iudeths feete, and reuerenced her, and said, Blessed art thou in all the tabernacle of Iuda, and in al nations, which, hearing thy name, shalbe astonished.
8 Now therefore tell mee all the thinges, that thou hast done in these dayes. Then Iudeth declared vnto him in the middes of the people all that shee had done from the daye that shee went forth, vntill that houre shee spake vnto them.
9 And when she had left of speaking, the people reioyced with a great voyce, and made a noyse of gladnesse through their citie.
10 And Achior, seeing all things that God had done for Israel, beleeued in God vnfaynedly, and circumcised the foreskin of his flesh, and was ioyned vnto the house of Israel vnto this day.
11 Assoone as the morning arose, they hanged the head of Olofernes out at the wall, and euery man tooke his weapons, and they went forth by bandes vnto the straytes of the mountaine.
12 But when the Assyrians sawe them, they sent to their captaines, which went to the gouernours and chiefe captaines, and to all their rulers.
13 So they came to Olofernes tent and saide to him that had the charge of all his things, Waken our lord: for the slaues haue bene bolde to come downe against vs to battel, that they may bee destroyed for euer.
14 Then went in Bagoas, and knocked at the doore of the tent: for hee thought that hee had slept with Iudeth.
15 But because none answered, hee opened it, and went into the chamber, and founde him cast vpon the floore, and his head was taken from him.
16 Therefore he cryed with a loude voyce, with weeping and mourning, and a mightie cry, and rent his garments.
17 After, he went into the tent of Iudeth where she vsed to remaine, and founde her not: then hee leaped out to the people and cryed,
18 These slaues haue committed wickednesse: one woman of the Hebrewes hath brought shame vpon the house of King Nabuchodonosor: for beholde, Olofernes lieth vpon the grounde without an head.
19 When the captaines of the Assyrians armie hearde these words, they rent their coates, and their heart was wonderfully troubled, and there was a cry and a verie great noyse throughout the campe.

1 Iudith saide vnto al the people, Brethren heare me: Sticke vp this head vpon our walles,
2 And when the sunne aryseth, take euery man his weapon, and fall out violently: not as though ye would go beside them, but to runne vpon them with violence.
3 When the spies see this, they shall of necessitie be compelled to flee backward, and to rayse vp their captayne to the battaile.
4 So when their captaynes come into Holophernes pauilion, and finde the dead body wrapped in the blood, fearefulnesse shall fall vpon them:
5 And when ye perceaue that they flee, folowe them without all care, for God shall delyuer them vnto you to be destroyed.
6 Then Achior seing the power of God which he had shewed vnto the people of Israel, fell of from his heathenishe beliefe, and put his trust in God, and let him selfe be circumcized, and so was he numbred among the people of Israel, he and all his posteritie vnto this day.
7 Now assoone as it was day, they stickt vp Holophernes head vpon the walles, and euery man tooke his weapon, and so they went out with an horrible crye.
8 When the spies saw that, they ranne vnto Holophernes tent.
9 And they that were within the tent, came before his chamber and made a great russhing by art, that Holophernes might awake, not by stirring him vp, but by their noyse.
10 For there durst not one of the Assyrians knocke, go in, or open.
11 But when the captaynes and princes and all the chiefe in the king of the Assyrians hoast came together, they said vnto the chamberlaynes:
12 Go your way in, and wake him vp: for the myce are crept out of their holes, and dare prouoke vs vnto battayle.
13 Then went Uagao into his chamber, stoode before the bed, and clapped with his handes: for he thought he had ben sleeping with Iudith.
14 But when he hearkened perfectly with his eares, and coulde perceaue no stirring, he went nyer to the bed and lift it vp, and when he sawe the dead body of Holophernes lying there without a head weltred in his blood vpon the earth, he cryed with a loude voyce, and with weeping rent his clothes,
15 And went into Iudiths tent, and founde her not.
16 And so he lept out vnto the people, and saide: One woman of the Iewes, hath brought al Nabuchodonosors people to shame: For lo, Holophernes lyeth vpon the grounde and hath no head.
17 When the chiefe of the Assyrians hoast heard that, they rent their clothes, and there fell an intollerable feare and tremblyng vpon them: so that their mindes were sore afrayd.
18 And there was an exceeding great crye in the whole hoast.

1 And Judith said to all the people: Hear me, my brethren, hang ye up this head upon our walls.
2 And as soon as the sun shall rise, let every man take his arms, and rush ye out, not as going down beneath, but as making an assault.
3 Then the watchmen must needs run to awake their prince for the battle.
4 And when the captains of them shall run to the tent of Holofernes, and shall find him without his head wallowing in his blood, fear shall fall upon them.
5 And when you shall know that they are fleeing, go after them securely, for the Lord will destroy them under your feet.
6 Then Achior seeing the power that the God of Israel had wrought, leaving the religion of the gentiles, he believed God, and circumcised the flesh of his foreskin, and was joined to the people of Israel, with all the succession of his kindred until this present day.
7 And immediately at break of day, they hung up the head of Holofernes upon the walls, and every man took his arms, and they sent out with a great noise and shouting.
8 And the watchmen seeing this, ran to the tent of Holofernes.
9 And they that were in the tent came, and made a noise before the door of the chamber to awake him, endeavoring by art to break his rest, that Holofernes might awake, not by their calling him, but by their noise.
10 For no man durst knock, or open and go into the chamber of the general of the Assyrians.
11 But when his captains and tribunes were come, and all the chiefs of the army of the king of the Assyrians, they said to the chamberlains
12 Go in, and awake him, for the mice coming out of their holes, have presumed to challenge us to fight.
13 Then Vagao going into his chamber, stood before the curtain, and made a clapping with his hands: for he thought that he was sleeping with Judith.
14 But when with hearkening, he perceived no motion of one lying, he came near to the curtain, and lifting it up, and seeing the body of Holofernes, lying upon the ground, without the head, sweltering in his blood, he cried out with a loud voice, with weeping, and rent his garments.
15 And he went into the tent of Judith, and not finding her, he ran out to the people,
16 And said: One Hebrew woman hath made confusion in the house of king Nabuchodonosor: for behold Holofernes lieth upon the ground, and his head is not upon him.
17 Now when the chiefs of the army of the Assyrians had heard this, they all rent their garments, and an intolerable fear and dread fell upon them, and their minds were troubled exceedingly.
18 And there was a very great cry in the midst of their camp.

1 Then said Judith unto them, Hear me now, my brethren, and take this head, and hang it upon the highest place of your walls.
2 And so soon as the morning shall appear, and the sun shall come forth upon the earth, take ye every one his weapons, and go forth every valiant man out of the city, and set ye a captain over them, as though ye would go down into the field toward the watch of the Assyrians; but go not down.
3 Then they shall take their armour, and shall go into their camp, and raise up the captains of the army of Assur, and shall run to the tent of Holofernes, but shall not find him: then fear shall fall upon them, and they shall flee before your face.
4 So ye, and all that inhabit the coast of Israel, shall pursue them, and overthrow them as they go.
5 But before ye do these things, call me Achior the Ammonite, that he may see and know him that despised the house of Israel, and that sent him to us as it were to his death.
6 Then they called Achior out of the house of Ozias; and when he was come, and saw the head of Holofernes in a man's hand in the assembly of the people, he fell down on his face, and his spirit failed.
7 But when they had recovered him, he fell at Judith's feet, and reverenced her, and said, Blessed art thou in all the tabernacles of Juda, and in all nations, which hearing thy name shall be astonished.
8 Now therefore tell me all the things that thou hast done in these days. Then Judith declared unto him in the midst of the people all that she had done, from the day that she went forth until that hour she spake unto them.
9 And when she had left off speaking, the people shouted with a loud voice, and made a joyful noise in their city.
10 And when Achior had seen all that the God of Israel had done, he believed in God greatly, and circumcised the flesh of his foreskin, and was joined unto the house of Israel unto this day.
11 And as soon as the morning arose, they hanged the head of Holofernes upon the wall, and every man took his weapons, and they went forth by bands unto the straits of the mountain.
12 But when the Assyrians saw them, they sent to their leaders, which came to their captains and tribunes, and to every one of their rulers.
13 So they came to Holofernes' tent, and said to him that had the charge of all his things, Waken now our lord: for the slaves have been bold to come down against us to battle, that they may be utterly destroyed.
14 Then went in Bagoas, and knocked at the door of the tent; for he thought that he had slept with Judith.
15 But because none answered, he opened it, and went into the bedchamber, and found him cast upon the floor dead, and his head was taken from him.
16 Therefore he cried with a loud voice, with weeping, and sighing, and a mighty cry, and rent his garments.
17 After he went into the tent where Judith lodged: and when he found her not, he leaped out to the people, and cried,
18 These slaves have dealt treacherously; one woman of the Hebrews hath brought shame upon the house of king Nabuchodonosor: for, behold, Holofernes lieth upon the ground without a head.
19 When the captains of the Assyrians' army heard these words, they rent their coats and their minds were wonderfully troubled, and there was a cry and a very great noise throughout the camp.

1 And Judith said unto them, Hear me now, my brethren, and take this head, and hang it upon the battlement of your wall.
2 And it shall be, so soon as the morning shall appear, and the sun shall come forth upon the earth, ye shall take up every one his weapons of war, and go forth every valiant man of you out of the city, and ye shall set a captain over them, as though ye would go down to the plain toward the watch of the children of Asshur; and ye shall not go down.
3 And these shall take up their panoplies, and shall go into their camp, and rouse up the captains of the host of Asshur, and they shall run together to the tent of Holofernes, and they shall not find him: and fear shall fall upon them, and they shall flee before your face.
4 And ye, and all that inhabit every coast of Israel, shall pursue them, and overthrow them as they go.
5 But before ye do these things, call me Achior the Ammonite, that he may see and know him that despised the house of Israel, and that sent him to us, as it were to death.
6 And they called Achior out of the house of Ozias; but when he came, and saw the head of Holofernes in a man’s hand in the assembly of the people, he fell upon his face, and his spirit failed.
7 But when they had recovered him, he fell at Judith’s feet, and did reverence unto her, and said, Blessed art thou in every tent of Judah, and in every nation, which hearing thy name shall be troubled.
8 And now tell me all the things that thou hast done in these days. And Judith declared unto him in the midst of the people all the things that she had done, from the day that she went forth until the time that she spake unto them.
9 But when she left off speaking, the people shouted with a loud voice, and made a joyful noise in their city.
10 But when Achior saw all the things that the God of Israel had done, he believed in God exceedingly, and circumcised the flesh of his foreskin, and was joined unto the house of Israel, unto this day.
11 But as soon as the morning arose, they hanged the head of Holofernes upon the wall, and every man took up his weapons, and they went forth by bands unto the ascents of the mountain.
12 But when the children of Asshur saw them, they sent hither and thither to their leaders; but they went to their captains and tribunes, and to every one of their rulers.
13 And they came to Holofernes’ tent, and said to him that was over all that he had, Waken now our lord: for the slaves have been bold to come down against us to battle, that they may be utterly destroyed.
14 And Bagoas went in, and knocked at the outer door of the tent; for he supposed that he was sleeping with Judith.
15 But when none hearkened to him, he opened it, and went into the bedchamber, and found him cast upon the threshold dead, and his head had been taken from him.
16 And he cried with a loud voice, with weeping and groaning and a mighty cry, and rent his garments.
17 And he entered into the tent where Judith lodged: and he found her not, and he leaped out to the people, and cried aloud,
18 The slaves have dealt treacherously: one woman of the Hebrews hath brought shame upon the house of king Nebuchadnezzar; for, behold, Holofernes [lieth] upon the ground, and his head is not on him.
19 But when the rulers of the host of Asshur heard the words, they rent their coats, and their soul was troubled exceedingly, and there was a cry and an exceeding great noise in the midst of the camp.
WEB(i)
1 Judith said to them, “Hear me now, my kindred, and take this head, and hang it upon the battlement of your wall.
2 It will be, so soon as the morning appears, and the sun comes up on the earth, you shall each take up his weapons of war, and every valiant man of you go out of the city. You shall set a captain over them, as though you would go down to the plain toward the watch of the children of Asshur; but you men shall not go down.
3 These shall take up their full armor, and shall go into their camp and rouse up the captains of the army of Asshur. They will run together to Holofernes’ tent. They won’t find him. Fear will fall upon them, and they will flee before your face.
4 You men, and all that inhabit every coast of Israel, shall pursue them and overthrow them as they go.
5 But before you do these things, summon Achior the Ammonite to me, that he may see and know him that despised the house of Israel, and that sent him to us, as it were to death.
6 And they called Achior out of the house of Ozias; but when he came, and saw the head of Holofernes in a man’s hand in the assembly of the people, he fell upon his face, and his spirit failed.
7 But when they had recovered him, he fell at Judith’s feet, and bowed down to her, and said, “Blessed are you in every tent of Judah, and in every nation, which hearing your name will be troubled.
8 Now tell me all the things that you have done in these days.” And Judith declared to him in the midst of the people all the things that she had done, from the day that she went out until the time that she spoke to them.
9 But when she finished speaking, the people shouted with a loud voice, and made a joyful noise in their city.
10 But when Achior saw all the things that the God of Israel had done, he believed in God exceedingly, and circumcised the flesh of his foreskin, and was joined to the house of Israel, to this day.
11 But as soon as the morning arose, they hanged the head of Holofernes upon the wall, and every man took up his weapons, and they went forth by bands to the ascents of the mountain.
12 But when the children of Asshur saw them, they sent word to their leaders; but they went to their captains and tribunes, and to every one of their rulers.
13 They came to Holofernes’ tent, and said to him that was over all that he had, “Wake our lord up, now; for the slaves have been bold to come down against us to battle, that they may be utterly destroyed.”
14 Bagoas went in, and knocked at the outer door of the tent; for he supposed that he was sleeping with Judith.
15 But when no one listened to him, he opened it, and went into the bedchamber, and found him cast upon the threshold dead, and his head had been taken from him.
16 He cried with a loud voice, with weeping and groaning and a mighty cry, and tore his garments.
17 He entered into the tent where Judith lodged, and he didn’t find her. He leaped out to the people, and cried aloud,
18 “The slaves have dealt treacherously! One woman of the Hebrews has brought shame upon the house of king Nebuchadnezzar; for, behold, Holofernes lies upon the ground, and his head is not on him!”
19 But when the rulers of the army of Asshur heard the words, they tore their coats, and their soul was troubled exceedingly. There was a cry and an exceedingly great noise in the midst of the camp.
LXX2012(i)
1 Then said Judith to them, Hear me now, my brethren, and take this head, and hang it upon the highest place of your walls.
2 And so soon as the morning shall appear, and the sun shall come forth upon the earth, take you⌃ every one his weapons, and go forth every valiant man out of the city, and set you⌃ a captain over them, as though you⌃ would go down into the field toward the watch of the Assyrians; but go not down.
3 Then they shall take their armor, and shall go into their camp, and raise up the captains of the army of Assur, and shall run to the tent of Holofernes, but shall not find him: then fear shall fall upon them, and they shall flee before your face.
4 So you⌃, and all that inhabit the coast of Israel, shall pursue them, and overthrow them as they go.
5 But before you⌃ do these things, call me Achior the Ammonite, that he may see and know him that despised the house of Israel, and that sent him to us as it were to his death.
6 Then they called Achior out of the house of Ozias; and when he was come, and saw the head of Holofernes in a man's hand in the assembly of the people, he fell down on his face, and his spirit failed.
7 But when they had recovered him, he fell at Judith's feet, and reverenced her, and said, Blessed are you in all the tabernacles of Juda, and in all nations, which hearing your name shall be astonished.
8 Now therefore tell me all the things that you have done in these days. Then Judith declared to him in the midst of the people all that she had done, from the day that she went forth until that hour she spoke to them.
9 And when she had left off speaking, the people shouted with a loud voice, and made a joyful noise in their city.
10 And when Achior had seen all that the God of Israel had done, he believed in God greatly, and circumcised the flesh of his foreskin, and was joined to the house of Israel to this day.
11 And as soon as the morning arose, they hanged the head of Holofernes upon the wall, and every man took his weapons, and they went forth by bands to the straits of the mountain.
16 Therefore he cried with a loud voice, with weeping, and sighing, and a mighty cry, and tore his garments.
17 After he went into the tent where Judith lodged: and when he found her not, he leaped out to the people, and cried,
18 These slaves have dealt treacherously; one woman of the Hebrews has brought shame upon the house of king Nabuchodonosor: for, behold, Holofernes lies upon the ground without a head.
19 When the captains of the Assyrians' army heard these words, they tore their coats and their minds were wonderfully troubled, and there was a cry and a very great noise throughout the camp.
