Mace(i) 2 then the Pharisees came and propos'd to him this insnaring question, is it lawful for a man to repudiate his wife? 3 to which he answered, what direction did Moses give you? 4 Moses, said they, allowed a bill of divorce, and so to dismiss her. 5 but Jesus answered them, it was out of regard to your untractable temper, that Moses gave you this permission. 6 for in the beginning of the world God formed them male and female. 7 "wherefore, 'tis said, a man shall leave his father and mother, and cleave to his wife, and they two shall be one flesh." 8 consequently they are no longer two, but one person. 9 let no man therefore separate what God has designed to be one. 10 When they were in the house, the disciples asked him again concerning this matter, and he said to them, 11 whoever repudiates his wife and marries another, commits adultery against her: 12 and if a woman quits her husband and is married to another, she committeth adultery.

JPS_ASV_Byz(i) 2 And the Pharisees came to him, and asked him, Is it lawful for a man to put away his wife? trying him. 3 And he answered and said unto them, What did Moses command you? 4 And they said, Moses suffered to write a bill of divorcement, and to put her away. 5 And Jesus answered and said unto them, For your hardness of heart he wrote you this commandment. 6 But from the beginning of the creation, God made them male and female. 7 For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife, 8 and the two shall become one flesh; so that they are no more two, but one flesh. 9 What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder. 10 And in the house the disciples asked him again of the same matter. 11 And he saith unto them, Whosoever shall put away his wife, and marry another, committeth adultery against her; 12 and if a woman putteth away her husband, and is married to another, she committeth adultery.
Rotherham(i) 2 And Pharisees coming near were questioning him––whether it is allowed a husband to divorce a wife, testing him. 3 But, he, answering, said unto them––What unto you did, Moses, command? 4 And, they, said––Moses permitted, to write, a roll of dismissal, and to divorce. 5 But, Jesus, said unto them––In view of your hardness of heart, wrote he for you this commandment; 6 But, from the beginning of creation, male and female, made he [them]; 7 For this cause, shall a man leave behind his father and mother, 8 and, the two, shall become, one flesh; so that, no longer, are they two, but, one flesh. 9 What then, God, hath yoked together, let, a man, not put asunder. 10 And, [coming] into the house again, the disciples, concerning this, were questioning him; 11 and he saith unto them––Whosoever shall divorce his wife, and marry another, committeth adultery against her; 12 And, if, she, divorcing her husband, marry another, she committeth adultery.
Twentieth_Century(i) 2 Presently some Pharisees came up and, to test him, asked: "Has a husband the right to divorce his wife?" 3 "What direction did Moses give you?" replied Jesus. 4 "Moses," they said, "permitted a man to 'draw up in writing a notice of separation and divorce his wife.'" 5 "It was owing to the hardness of your hearts," said Jesus, "that Moses gave you this direction; 6 But, at the beginning of the Creation, God 'made them male and female.' 7 'For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother, 8 And the man and his wife shall become one;' so that they are no longer two, but one. 9 What God himself, then, has yoked together man must not separate." 10 When they were indoors, the disciples asked him again about this, 11 And he said: "Any one who divorces his wife and marries another woman is guilty of adultery against his wife; 12 And, if the woman divorces her husband and marries another man, she is guilty of adultery."
Godbey(i) 2 And the Pharisees having come forward asked Him, If it is lawful for a man to send away his wife? tempting Him. 3 And He responding said to them, What did Moses command you? 4 And they said, Moses permitted to write a book of divorcement, and to send her away. 5 Jesus said to them, On account of the hardness of your heart he wrote this commandment to you. 6 But from the beginning of creation God made them male and female. 7 On this account a man shall leave his father and his mother, 8 and they two shall be one flesh; so they are no longer two, but one flesh. 9 And what God joined together, let no man separate. 10 And His disciples again around Him in the house asked Him. And He says to them, 11 Whosoever may send away his wife, and marry another, commits adultery unto her. 12 And if she having sent away her husband, may marry another, she commits adultery.
WNT(i) 2 Presently a party of Pharisees come to Him with the question--seeking to entrap Him, "May a man divorce his wife?" 3 "What rule did Moses lay down for you?" He answered. 4 "Moses," they said, "permitted a man to draw up a written notice of divorce, and to send his wife away." 5 "It was in consideration of your stubborn hearts," said Jesus, "that Moses enacted this law for you; 6 but from the beginning of the creation the rule was, 'MALE AND FEMALE DID GOD MAKE THEM. 7 FOR THIS REASON A MAN SHALL LEAVE HIS FATHER AND HIS MOTHER, AND SHALL CLING TO HIS WIFE, 8 AND THE TWO SHALL BE ONE'; so that they are two no longer, but 'ONE.' 9 What, therefore, God has joined together let not man separate." 10 Indoors the disciples began questioning Jesus again on the same subject. 11 He replied, "Whoever divorces his wife and marries another woman, commits adultery against the first wife; 12 and if a woman puts away her husband and marries another man, she commits adultery."
Worrell(i) 2 And the Pharisees, corning to Him, were asking Him, "Is it lawful for a man to put away his wife!" tempting Him. 3 And He, answering, said to them, "What did Moses command you?" 4 And they said, "Moses permitted to write a bill of divorcement, and to put her away." 5 But Jesus said to them, "Because of the hardness of your heart he wrote you this commandment. 6 But from the beginning of the creation, 'Male and female made He them.' 7 For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, [and shall cleave to his wife], 8 and the two shall become one flesh; so that they are no more two, but one flesh. 9 What, therefore, God joined together, let not man put asunder." 10 And in the house the disciples asked Him again concerning this. 11 And He saith to them, "Whosoever puts away his wife, and marries another, commits adultery against her; 12 and, if she herself, having put away her husband, marries another, she commits adultery."
Moffatt(i) 2 Now some Pharisees came up and asked him if a man was allowed to divorce his wife. This was to tempt him. 3 So he replied, "What did Moses lay down for you?" 4 They said, "Moses permitted a man to divorce her by writing out a separation notice." 5 Jesus said to them, "He wrote you that command on account of the hardness of your hearts. 6 But from the beginning, when God created the world, Male and female, He created them: 7 hence a man shall leave his father and mother, 8 and the pair shall be one flesh. So they are no longer two, but one flesh. 9 What God has joined, then, man must not separate." 10 Indoors, the disciples again asked him about this, 11 and he said to them, "Whoever divorces his wife and marries another woman is an adulterer to the former, 12 and she is an adulteress if she divorces her husband and marries another man."
Goodspeed(i) 2 Some Pharisees came up, and in order to test him asked him whether a man should be allowed to divorce his wife. 3 But he answered, "What has Moses commanded you to do?" 4 They said, "Moses permits a man to divorce his wife by drawing up a written divorce-notice." 5 But Jesus said to them, "It was on account of your perversity that he laid down that law for you. 6 But from the beginning of the creation, 'God made them male and female. 7 Therefore a man must leave his father and mother, and he and his wife must become one,' 8 and so they are no longer two but one. 9 Therefore what God has joined together man must not try to separate." 10 When they reached the house the disciples asked him about this again. 11 And he said to them, "Anyone who divorces his wife and marries another woman commits adultery against his former wife, 12 and if a woman divorces her husband and marries another man, she is an adulteress."
Riverside(i) 2 Some Pharisees came up and asked him, "Is it right for a man to divorce his wife?" They meant to catch him. 3 He answered, "What did Moses command you?" 4 They said, "Moses permitted a husband to give a certificate of divorce and send his wife away." 5 Jesus said to them, "Because of your hard-heartedness he wrote this law for you. 6 But from the beginning of the creation, 'male and female made he them.' 7 'Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother 8 and the two shall become one flesh.' So they are no longer two, but one flesh. 9 What therefore God has joined together, let not man put asunder." 10 When they were in the house, his disciples asked him again about this. 11 He said to them, "Whoever divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery against her. 12 And if a wife divorces her husband and marries another she commits adultery."
MNT(i) 2 Presently some Pharisees came up and tested him, by asking if it was lawful for a man to divorce his wife. 3 "What did Moses command you?" he replied, 4 "Moses," said they, "permitted a man to draw up a bill of separation and divorce her." 5 But Jesus said to them. "Moses gave you that command because of the hardness of your hearts; 6 but from the beginning of the creation God made them male and female. 7 "For this cause a man shall leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave to his wife; and the two shall become one flesh; 8 so that they are no more two, but one flesh. 9 What therefore God has joined together, let not man put asunder." 10 When indoors the disciples began to question Jesus again about this, and he said: 11 "Any man who divorces his wife and marries another woman commits adultery against her; 12 and if she divorces her husband and marries another man, she commits adultery."
Lamsa(i) 2 And the Pharisees came up to him, tempting him and asking, Is it lawful for a man to desert his wife? 3 He said to them, What did Moses command you? 4 They said, Moses gave us permission to write a letter of separation, and then to divorce. 5 Jesus answered and said to them, It was because of the hardness of your heart, that he wrote for you this particular law. 6 But from the very beginning God made them male and female. 7 For this reason a man shall leave his father and his mother and follow his wife. 8 And both shall be one flesh; henceforth they are not two, but one flesh. 9 What therefore God has joined, let no man separate. 10 And his disciples again asked him about this in the house. 11 And he said to them, Whoever divorces his wife and marries another, commits adultery. 12 And if a woman divorces her husband, and marries another, she commits adultery.
CLV(i) 2 And approaching, the Pharisees, trying Him, inquired of Him if it is allowed a husband to dismiss a wife." 3 Yet He, answering, said to them, "What does Moses direct you? 4 Yet they say, "Moses permits us to write a scroll of divorce, and to dismiss her." 5 And answering, Jesus said to them, "In view of your hardheartedness he writes for you this precept." 6 Yet from the beginning of creation God makes them male and female. 7 On this account a man will be leaving his father and mother and will be joined to his wife, 8 and the two will be one flesh. So that no longer are they two, but one flesh." 9 What God, then, yokes together, let not man be separating." 10 And, in the house, again His disciples inquired of Him concerning this." 11 And He is saying to them, "Whosoever should be dismissing his wife and should be marrying another is committing adultery against her." 12 And if she, dismissing her husband, should ever be marrying another, she is committing adultery."
Williams(i) 2 Some Pharisees came up, and to test Him they began to ask Him whether a man should be allowed to divorce his wife. 3 And He answered them by asking, "What has Moses commanded you about it?" 4 They answered, "Moses allowed a man to divorce his wife, if he wrote out a divorce charge." 5 But Jesus said to them, "It was due to your moral perversity that Moses wrote that command in your law. 6 But from the beginning of the creation, 'God made them male and female. 7 Therefore, a man must leave his father and mother, 8 and he and his wife must become one,' so they are no longer two but one. 9 Therefore, what God has joined together man must stop separating." 10 On reaching the house the disciples again asked Him about this. 11 So He said to them, "If any man divorces his wife to marry another woman, he commits adultery against his former wife, 12 and if any woman divorces her husband to marry another man, she commits adultery."
BBE(i) 2 And Pharisees came to him, testing him with the question, Is it right for a man to put away his wife? 3 And he said to them in answer, What did Moses say you were to do? 4 And they said to him, Moses let us give her a statement in writing, and be free from her. 5 But Jesus said to them, Because of your hard hearts he gave you this law. 6 But from the first, male and female made he them. 7 For this cause will a man go away from his father and mother, and be joined to his wife; 8 And the two will become one flesh; so that they are no longer two, but one flesh. 9 Let not that which has been joined together by God be parted by man. 10 And in the house the disciples put questions to him again about this thing. 11 And he said to them, Whoever puts away his wife and takes another, is false to his wife; 12 And if she herself puts away her husband and takes another, she is false to her husband.
MKJV(i) 2 And tempting Him, the Pharisees came to Him and asked Him, Is it lawful for a man to put away his wife? 3 And He answered and said to them, What did Moses command you? 4 And they said, Moses allowed a bill of divorce to be written, and to put her away. 5 And Jesus answered and said to them, He wrote you this precept because of the hardness of your hearts. 6 But from the beginning of the creation God made them male and female. 7 For this cause a man shall leave his father and mother and shall cleave to his wife. 8 And the two of them shall be one flesh. So then they are no longer two, but one flesh. 9 Therefore what God has joined together, let not man put apart. 10 And in the house His disciples asked Him again about the same. 11 And He said to them, Whoever shall put away his wife and marries another commits adultery against her. 12 And if a woman shall put away her husband and marries to another, she commits adultery.
LITV(i) 2 And coming near, the Pharisees asked Him if it is lawful for a man to put away a wife, testing Him. 3 But answering, He said to them, What did Moses command you? 4 And they said, Moses allowed "to write a bill of divorce, and to put away." Deut. 24:1 5 And answering, Jesus said to them, With respect to your hardheartedness he wrote this command to you. 6 But from the beginning of creation "God made them male and female." Gen. 1:27 7 "Because of this, a man shall leave his father and mother and shall be joined to his wife, 8 and the two shall be one flesh;" so that they no longer are two, but one flesh. Gen. 2:24 9 Therefore, what God yoked together, let not man put apart. 10 And again, in the house His disciples asked Him about the same. 11 And He said to them, Whoever shall puts away his wife and marries another commits adultery against her. 12 And if a woman puts away her husband and marries another, she commits adultery.
ECB(i) 2 And the Pharisees come to him, and ask him, Is a man allowed to release his woman? - testing him. 3 And he answers them, saying, What misvahed Mosheh? 4 And they say, Mosheh allowed to scribe a scroll of apostasy, and to release her. 5 And Yah Shua answers them, saying, Because of your hardheartedness he scribed you this misvah: 6 but from the beginning of the creation Elohim made them male and female. 7 For this cause a human leaves his father and mother and adheres to his woman 8 and the two become into one flesh: that they are no more two, but one flesh. 9 So what Elohim co-yokes, humanity is not to separate. 10 And in the house his disciples ask him again concerning the same matter: 11 and he words to them, Whoever releases his woman and marries another, adulterizes against her: 12 and whenever a woman releases her man and marries another, she adulterizes.
AUV(i) 2 Some Pharisees [i.e., a strict sect of the Jewish religion] came to Him [and attempted] to test Him by asking, “Is it permissible by the law of Moses for a man to divorce his wife?” 3 And He answered them, “What did Moses command you [to do]?” 4 They replied, “Moses allowed us to provide a legal divorce decree and [then] to divorce her.” 5 But Jesus said to them, “He wrote you this commandment [only] because of the rebellious spirit of you [Jews]. 6 But from the beginning of creation God made mankind male and female. 7 For this reason [i.e., since he made one woman for one man] a man will leave [the home of] his father and mother and will cling to his wife 8 and the two of them will [then] become one flesh [i.e., united in such a close relationship as to constitute one body], so that [upon becoming husband and wife] they no longer function as two persons but as one body. 9 Therefore, those whom God so joins together [in the marriage bond], no person must ever separate.” 10 And when they were in the house, His disciples asked Him about this matter again. 11 And He said to them, “Whoever divorces his wife and marries another [woman] commits sexual unfaithfulness [toward her]. 12 And if she herself divorces her husband and marries another [man], she commits sexual unfaithfulness [toward him].”
ACV(i) 2 And the Pharisees having approached, they demanded of him if it is permitted for a man to divorce a wife, testing him. 3 And having answered, he said to them, What did Moses command you? 4 And they said, Moses permitted to write a document of divorce, and to divorce her. 5 But having answered, Jesus said to them, For your hard heart he wrote for you this commandment. 6 But from the beginning of creation God made them male and female. 7 Because of this a man will leave his father and mother behind, and will be bonded with his wife, 8 and the two will be in one flesh. So then they are no more two, but one flesh. 9 What therefore God has joined together, no man shall separate. 10 And in the house the disciples questioned him again about the same thing. 11 And he says to them, Whoever may divorce his wife, and will marry another, commits adultery against her. 12 And if a woman should divorce her husband, and will be married to another, she commits adultery.
Common(i) 2 The Pharisees came and in order to test him asked, "Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife?" 3 He answered them, "What did Moses command you?" 4 They said, "Moses permitted a man to write a certificate of divorce, and to put her away." 5 But Jesus said to them, "Because of your hardness of heart he wrote you this commandment. 6 But from the beginning of creation God 'made them male and female.' 7 'For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, 8 and the two shall become one flesh.' So they are no longer two, but one flesh. 9 Therefore what God has joined together, let not man separate." 10 In the house his disciples also asked him again about this matter. 11 So he said to them, "Whoever divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery against her. 12 And if she divorces her husband and marries another man, she commits adultery."

WPNT(i) 2 Then some Pharisees approached to test Him and asked Him, “Is it lawful for a man to divorce a wife?” 3 So in answer He said to them, “What did Moses command you?” 4 They said, “Moses permitted one to write a certificate of divorce and to put away”. 5 Jesus answered and said to them: “It was due to your hardness of heart that he wrote you this precept. 6 But from the beginning of creation, God made them male and female. 7 ‘For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, 8 and the two will be turned into one flesh.’ So then, they are no longer two but one flesh. 9 Therefore what God has joined together, let man not separate.” 10 When they were in the house again, His disciples asked Him about the same subject. 11 So He said to them, “Whoever divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery against her; 12 and if a woman divorces her husband and gets married to another, she commits adultery.”
JMNT(i) 2 At one point, the Pharisees were coming toward [Him] and began questioning Him – being in the habit of repeatedly putting Him to the test, so as to examine Him, or even to tempt Him or to get Him off His guard – whether it is allowed by custom and the Law for an adult male to loose-away (divorce; dismiss) a wife. 3 So He, giving a considered reply, asked them, "What did (or: does) Moses impart as a goal for you folks (or: give as the end in mind to you people)?" 4 And they said, "Moses turned it upon [us] (= gives it to our management, thus permitting [us]) to write a little scroll of divorce (of putting off and standing away), and to loose [her] away (dismiss [her])." [Deut. 24:1, 3] 5 So now Jesus said to them, "He wrote this implanted goal (impartation of the finished product within; inward directive) for (or: to) you people with a view to (or: directed toward) the dryness and hardness of your hearts, 6 "however, from [the] beginning of creation 'He made them (or: forms and constructs them) male, and female.' [Gen.1:27; 5:2] 7 'On account of this, a person (a human; mankind; or: a man) will proceed completely leaving his/her father and mother,' 8 'and the two people will proceed coming into an existence of being one flesh,' [Gen. 2:24] [note: Westcott & Hort and Panin follow the above reading of vs. 7, with Aleph, B & other MSS. The Concordant Text and Tasker include, while Nestle-Aland & Griesbach bracket the following addition to vs. 7: '... and will continue joined (glued; welded) together with and focused toward his wife,'] [note: this latter reading suggests being matrilocal] with the result that they no longer exist being two [people], but rather, one flesh. 9 "Therefore, what God yokes together, humanity (a person; mankind; a man) must not be continually separating (or: by customary action be putting apart)." 10 Then, [having entered] into the house again (= when indoors once more), the disciples kept on asking Him about this. 11 So He proceeds saying to them, "Whoever may loose-away (dismiss; divorce) his wife and should marry another woman proceeds to commit adultery on her. 12 "Also, if she [i.e., the wife], upon loosing-away (divorcing) her adult male, should marry another man, she proceeds in committing adultery." [comment: thus, it is the same for both husband and wife; in this verse, Jesus points out that the action could be initiated by the wife]
NSB(i) 2 Some Pharisees came to him and tried to trap him. »Does our Law allow a man to divorce his wife?« They asked. 3 »What did Moses command you?« Jesus asked. 4 They said: »Moses allowed us to write a certificate of divorce and send her away.« 5 »He wrote this commandment because of your hard hearts,« Jesus replied. 6 »God made male and female from the beginning of creation. 7 »For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and unite with his wife. 8 »The two shall become one flesh. They are no longer two, but one flesh. 9 »That which God has joined together let not man take apart (separate).« 10 In the house the disciples asked him again about this matter. 11 He said: »He who divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery against her. 12 »If she divorces her husband and marries another, she commits adultery.

MLV(i) 2 And having come to him, the Pharisees asked him, testing him, Is it legal for a man to divorce his wife?
3 But he answered and said to them, What did Moses command you? 4 But they said, Moses permitted us to write a document of divorcement and to divorce her.
5 And Jesus answered and said to them, He wrote this commandment for you, for your hardness of heart. 6 But ‘God made them male and female’from the beginning of the creation. 7 ‘Because of this, a man will be leaving his father and mother and will be joined to his wife; 8 and the two will become one flesh,’so-that they are no more two, but one flesh. 9 Therefore, what God has yoked together, let man not separate.
