Deuteronomy

VIN(i) 1 These are the words that Moses spoke to all Israel in Transjordan in the wilderness, in the Aravah opposite Suph between Paran and Tophel, Laban, Hazeroth and Di-zahab. 2 It takes 11 days to travel from Horeb to Kadesh-barnea via Mount Seir. 3 On the first day of the eleventh month, in the fortieth year, Moses spoke to the Israelites about everything that the LORD had commanded him concerning them. 4 This took place after he defeated Sihon, king of the Amorites, who lived in Heshbon and Og, king of Bashan, who lived in Ashtaroth at Edrei. 5 beyond the Jordan in the land of Moab, Moses began to explain this law, saying, 6 The Lord our God said to us in Horeb, You have been long enough in this mountain: 7 Break camp, get going, and proceed to the hill country of the Amorites and all the nearby places in the Arabah desert, the highlands, the foothills, the Negev, the coastal plains, all of the land of the Canaanites, and Lebanon as far as the great river, the Euphrates. 8 "I have given you this land. Go in and possess the land the LORD pledged to give to your fathers, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob and to their descendants (offspring) after them.' 9 At that time I said to you, I am not able to undertake the care of you by myself; 10 The LORD your God greatly multiplied your numbers, and today you are like the stars in the sky. 11 May the LORD the God of your fathers make you a thousand times as many as you are and bless you, as He has promised you! 12 How can I bear the burden of you and your bickering all by myself? 13 Take wise men of understanding who are respected among your tribes, and I will make them heads over you.” 14 "You answered me: 'The thing you speak is good for us to do.' 15 So I chose leaders from your tribes, wise and respected men, and I appointed them over you commanders of thousands, hundreds, fifties, and tens. 16 And I commanded your judges at that time, saying, Hear between your brothers; and judge with righteousness between a man and his brother, and his alien. 17 "You will not show partiality in judgment. You shall hear the small and the great. You will not fear man for the judgment is God's. The case that is too hard for you, bring to me, and I will hear it.' 18 And at that time I gave you all the orders which you were to do. 19 Then we went on from Horeb, through all that great and cruel waste which you saw, on our way to the hill-country of the Amorites, as the Lord gave us orders; and we came to Kadesh-barnea. 20 I said to you, 'You have reached the hill country of the Amorites that the LORD our God is giving to us. 21 See, the LORD your God has set before you the land; go up and possess it as the LORD the God of your ancestors said to you; do not fear and do not be dismayed.' 22 And you came all to me, and said: Let us send men who may view the land, and bring us word what way we shall go up, and to what cities we shall go. 23 And the saying seemed good unto me, and I took twelve men of you, one of each tribe. 24 They turned and went up into the hill country, and came to the valley of Eshcol, and spied it out. 25 they took in their hands some of the fruit of the land, and brought it to you, and said, The land is good, which the Lord our God giveth us. 26 But you were not willing to go up, and you rebelled against the command of the LORD your God. 27 "You complained in your tents, and said: the LORD hates us so he brought us out of the land of Egypt, to deliver us into the hand of the Amorites, to destroy us. 28 "'Where can we go up? Our brothers caused us to lose heart. They said: The people are stronger and taller than we are. The cities are large and the walls go up to the sky. Moreover we have seen the sons of the Anakims there."' 29 Then I said to you, “Don’t be terrified. Don’t be afraid of them. 30 the LORD your God, who is going before you, will himself fight for you, just as he did for you in Egypt before your eyes, 31 and in the wilderness where you saw how the LORD your Elohim carried you, just as a man carries his son, in all the way you went until you came to this place. 32 But despite this, you didn't trust in the LORD your God, 33 »He went ahead of you to find places for you to camp. He offered fire by night and cloud by day to show you the way you should go. 34 »the LORD heard what you said. He was angry and solemnly swore: 35 "'Not one man of this evil generation will see that good land, which I swore to give your fathers, 36 "'Except Caleb son of Jephunneh. He will see it. I will give him and his descendants the land he walks on. This is because he followed the LORD wholeheartedly. 37 Also the LORD was angry with me for your sakes, saying, Thou shalt not go in there either. 38 Joshua, the son of Nun, your assistant, will go there; encourage him because he will cause Israel to inherit it. 39 Your little ones whom you said would be taken captive and your children who do not yet know right from wrong, will enter the land. I will give it to them and they themselves will possess it. 40 But as for you, prepare to set out for the desert on the way to the Reed Sea.' 41 Then you answered and said to me, “We have sinned against the LORD. We will go up and fight, according to all that the LORD our God commanded us.” Every man of you put on his weapons of war, and presumed to go up into the hill country. 42 But the LORD said to me, Say to them, Do not go up, nor fight, for I am not among you, you will be beaten by your enemies. 43 So I spoke to you, but you did not listen; you rebelled against the ⌊command of Yahweh⌋; you behaved presumptuously, and you went up into the hill country. 44 The Amorites, who lived in that hill country, came out against you and chased you as bees do, and beat you down in Seir, even to Hormah. 45 You returned and wept before the LORD; but the LORD didn't listen to your voice, nor turn his ear to you. 46 And you dwelt in Kadesh many days, as many days as you dwelt there.
