Deuteronomy 20

VIN(i) 1 "When you go to war against your enemies, you may see horses, chariots, and armies larger than yours. Do not be afraid of them for the LORD your God, who brought you out of Egypt, will be with you. 2 When you draw near to the battle, the priest shall approach and speak to the people 3 He should say: "Listen, Israel, today you are going into battle against your enemies. Do not lose your courage! Do not be afraid. Do not tremble because of them. 4 For the LORD your God is he who goes with you, to fight for you against your enemies, to save you. 5 "The officers should speak to the army: If you have built a new house that has not been dedicated, you may go home. Otherwise, you might die in battle, and someone else will dedicate it. 6 "'And is there a man here who has planted a vineyard and not yet benefited from it? Let him go home. Otherwise, he may die in battle and another man use it. 7 "'And is there a man here who is engaged to a woman and has not yet married her? Let him go back home. Otherwise, he may die in battle and another man marry her.' 8 "Let the officials also speak to the army, 'Is there a man here who is afraid and faint-hearted? Let him go back home. Otherwise, he may demoralize his fellow soldier.' 9 "When the officials have finished speaking to the army, they must appoint officers to lead the troops." 10 When you come to a town, before attacking it, make an offer of peace. 11 "If they open the gates and surrender, they will all become your slaves and do forced labor for you. 12 But if they refuse to make peace with you and instead choose war, then attack it. 13 "When the LORD your God lets you capture the city, kill every man in it. 14 "You may take the women, the children, the livestock, and everything else in the city for yourselves. You may use everything that belongs to your enemies. the LORD has given it to you. 15 "This is what you must do to all the cities that are far away that do not belong to the nations nearby. 16 But of the cities of these peoples that the LORD your God gives you for an inheritance, you must save alive nothing that breathes; 17 you must utterly destroy them: the Hittite, the Amorite, the Canaanite, the Perizzite, the Hivite and the Jebusite, as the LORD your God has commanded you, 18 "Otherwise, they will teach you to do all the disgusting things they do for their gods. You will sin against the LORD your God. 19 When you besiege a city a long time in making war against it to take it, you must not destroy its trees by wielding an axe against them, for you may eat of them, and you shall not cut them down. Is the tree of the field a man, that it should be besieged by you? 20 However, you may cut down the trees whose fruit you know isn't edible, in order to build siege works against the city that waged war with you, until it falls."
