Mace(i) 28 One of the Scribes, that had heard their dispute, observing the propriety of his answers, propos'd this question to him, which is the principal commandment of all? 29 Jesus answer'd him, the first of all the commandments is thus deliver'd, "hear, o Israel, the lord our God is the only lord. 30 you shall therefore love the lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, to the utmost of your understanding, and all your faculties." this is the first commandment. 31 and the second, which has an affinity to it, is this: "you shall love your neighbour as yourself." there is no other commandment greater than these. 32 the Scribe replied, what you have said, master, is very true, there is one God, and no other but he. 33 and to love him with all the heart, with all the understanding, with all the soul, with all its faculties, and to love one's neighbour as one's self is more acceptable than all the offerings and sacrifices in the world.

JPS_ASV_Byz(i) 28 And one of the scribes came, and heard them questioning together, and knowing that he had answered them well, asked him, What commandment is the first of all? 29 And Jesus answered him, The first of all the commandments is, Hear, O Israel, The Lord our God, the Lord is one; 30 and thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength; this is the first commandment. 31 And the second is like it, Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself. Rotherham(i) 28 And one of the Scribes, coming near, hearing them discussing, seeing that, well, he had answered them, began to question him––Which is the chief commandment of all? 29 Jesus answered––The chief is: Hear! O Israel,––The Lord our God, is, one Lord; 30 Therefore shalt thou love the Lord thy God, with all thy heart, and with all thy soul,––and with all thy mind; and with all thy strength. 31 The second, is, this––Thou shalt love, thy neighbour, as thyself. Greater than these, other commandment, is there none. 32 The Scribe said unto him––Well, Teacher! in truth, hast thou said––He is, One, and there is none other, than he; 33 And, to love him, with all the heart, and with all the understanding,––and with all the might; and to love one’s neighbour as one’s self, is, abundantly more, than all the whole burnt offerings and sacrifices.
Twentieth_Century(i) 28 Then came up one of the Teachers of the Law who had heard their discussions. Knowing that Jesus had answered them wisely, he asked him this question: "What is the first of all the commandments?" 29 "The first," answered Jesus, "is--'Hear, O Israel; the Lord our God is the one Lord; 30 And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength.' 31 The second is this--'Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thou dost love thyself.' There is no commandment greater than these." 32 "Wisely answered, Teacher!" exclaimed the Teacher of the Law. "It is true, as you say, that 'there is one God,' and that 'there is no other besides him'; 33 And to 'love him with all one's heart, and with all one's understanding, and with all one's strength,' and to 'love one's neighbor as one loves oneself' is far beyond all 'burnt-offerings and sacrifices.'"
Godbey(i) 28 And a certain one of the scribes, hearing them propounding questions, knowing that He answered them beautifully, asked Him, What is the first commandment of all? 29 And Jesus responded to him, The first commandment of all; Hear, O Israel; The Lord our God, is one Lord: 30 and thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength. This is the first commandment. 31 And the second is like unto it; Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself. There is no other commandment greater than these. 32 And the scribes said to Him, Truly, Teacher; thou hast spoken in truth that He is One; and there is no other besides Him. 33 And love Him with all the heart, and with all the mind, and with all the strength, and to love thy neighbor as thyself is more than all whole burnt offerings and sacrifices.
WNT(i) 28 Then one of the Scribes, who had heard them disputing and well knew that Jesus had given them an answer to the point, and a forcible one, came forward and asked Him, "Which is the chief of all the Commandments?" 29 "The chief Commandment," replied Jesus, "is this: 'HEAR, O ISRAEL! THE LORD OUR GOD IS ONE LORD; 30 AND THOU SHALT LOVE THE LORD THY GOD WITH THY WHOLE HEART, THY WHOLE SOUL, THY WHOLE MIND, AND THY WHOLE STRENGTH.' 31 "The second is this: 'THOU SHALT LOVE THY FELLOW MAN AS THOU LOVEST THYSELF.' "Other Commandment greater than these there is none." 32 So the Scribe said to Him, "Rightly, in very truth, Rabbi, have you said that HE STANDS ALONE, AND THERE IS NONE BUT HE; 33 and TO LOVE HIM WITH ALL ONE'S HEART, WITH ALL ONE'S UNDERSTANDING, AND WITH ALL ONE'S STRENGTH, AND TO LOVE ONE'S FELLOW MAN NO LESS THAN ONESELF, is far better than all our WHOLE BURNT-OFFERINGS AND SACRIFICES."
Worrell(i) 28 And one of the scribes, coming near, hearing them discussing together, knowing that He answered them well, asked Him, "What commandment is first of all?" 29 Jesus answered, "The first is, 'Hear, O Israel; the Lord is our God, the Lord is One; 30 and you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your mind and with all your strength.' 31 A second is this, 'You shall love your neighbor as yourself.' There is no commandment greater than these." 32 The scribe said to Him, "Well, Teacher, Thou didst say truly that He is One, and there is not another beside Him; 33 and to love Him with all the heart, and with all the understanding, and with all the strength, and to love one's neighbor as himself, is much more than all the whole burnt-offerings and sacrifices."
Moffatt(i) 28 Then a scribe came up, who had listened to the discussion. Knowing Jesus had given them an apt answer, he put this question to him, "What is the chief of all the commands?" 29 Jesus replied, "The chief one is: Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God is one Lord, 30 and you must love the Lord your God with your whole heart, with your whole soul, with your whole mind, and with your whole strength. 31 The second is this: You must love your neighbour as yourself. There is no other command greater than these." 32 The scribe said to him, "Right, teacher! You have truly said, He is One, and there is none else but Him. 33 Also, to love him with the whole heart, with the whole understanding, and with the whole strength, and to love one's neighbour as oneself — that is far more than all holocausts and sacrifices."
Goodspeed(i) 28 One of the scribes came up and heard them arguing. He saw that Jesus had answered them well, and he asked him, "Which is the first of all the commands?" 29 Jesus answered, "The first one is, 'Hear, Israel! The Lord our God is one lord, 30 and you must love the Lord your God with your whole heart, your whole soul, your whole mind, and your whole strength.' 31 And this is the second: 'You must love your neighbor as you do yourself.' No other command is greater than these." 32 The scribe said to him, "Really, Master, you have finely said that he stands alone, and there is none but he, 33 and to love him with one's whole heart, one's whole understanding, and one's whole strength, and to love one's neighbor as one's self is far more than all these burnt-offerings and sacrifices."
Riverside(i) 28 Then came one of the scribes, and, after listening to their discussion and knowing that he had answered them well, asked, "Which is the first commandment of all?" 29 Jesus answered, "The first is, 'Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God is one Lord, 30 and thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart and with all thy soul and with all thy mind and with all thy strength.' 31 This is the second, 'Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself.' There is no other commandment greater than these." 32 The scribe said to him, "Right, teacher; you have said truly that he is one and there is no other beside him, 33 and to love him with all the heart and with all the understanding and with all the strength and to love one's neighbor as one's self is more than all the whole burnt offerings and sacrifices."
MNT(i) 28 Just then up came one of the Scribes who had heard them arguing, and realized that Jesus had answered them admirably. "What commandment," he asked, "is the first of all?" 29 Jesus replied. "The first is. 'Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God is one Lord; 30 and thou shalt love the Lord thy God, with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength.'" 31 "The second is this, "Thou shall love thy neighbor as thyself. Other command greater than these there is none." 32 "Admirably said, O Teacher," exclaimed the Scribe. "You have truthfully said that He is one, 33 and that beside him there is none other, and to love him with all one's heart and with all one's understanding and with all one's might, and to love one's neighbor as oneself is far beyond all whole burnt offerings and sacrifices."
Lamsa(i) 28 And one of the scribes came near and heard them debating, and he saw that he gave them a good answer. So he asked him, Which is the first commandment of all? 29 Jesus said to him, The first of all commandments is, Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God is one Lord; 30 And you must love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your power; this is the first commandment. 31 And the second is like to it, You must love your neighbor as yourself. There is no other commandment greater than these. 32 The scribe said to him, Well, Teacher, you have said the truth, that he is one, and there is no other beside him; 33 And that a man should love him with all the heart, and with all the mind, and with all the soul, and with all the power, and love his neighbor as himself; this is far more important than all burnt offerings and sacrifices.
CLV(i) 28 And, approaching, one of the scribes, hearing them discussing, having perceived that He answered them ideally, inquires of Him, "What is the foremost precept of all? 29 Jesus answered him that "The foremost precept of all is: Hear, Israel! the Lord our God is one Lord." 30 And, You shall be loving the Lord God out of your whole heart, and out of your whole soul, and out of your whole comprehension, and out of your whole strength. This is the foremost precept." 31 And the second is like it: 'You shall be loving your associate as yourself.' Now greater than these is no other precept." 32 And the scribe said to Him, "In truth, Teacher, Thou sayest ideally that He is One, and there is no other more than He." 33 And to be loving Him out of your whole heart, and out of the whole understanding, and out of the whole soul, and out of the whole strength, and to be loving the associate as yourself, is excessively more than all the ascent approaches and the sacrifices."
Williams(i) 28 Then one of the scribes, on hearing them arguing, came up, and since he saw that Jesus had answered them properly, he asked Him, "What sort of command is the first of all commands?" 29 Jesus answered, "The first one is, 'Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God is one Lord, 30 and you must love the Lord your God with your whole heart, your whole soul, your whole mind, and your whole strength.' 31 And this is the second, 'You must love your neighbor as you do yourself.' No other command is greater than these." 32 Then the scribe said to Him, "Indeed, Teacher, you have properly said that He is one by Himself, and there is no other but Him, 33 and to love Him with one's whole heart, one's whole understanding, and one's whole strength, and to love one's neighbor as one loves himself is far more than all the burnt-offerings and sacrifices."
BBE(i) 28 And one of the scribes came, and hearing their argument together, and seeing that he had given them a good answer, put the question to him, Which law is the first of all? 29 Jesus said in answer, The first is, Give ear, O Israel: The Lord our God is one Lord; 30 And you are to have love for the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength. 31 The second is this, Have love for your neighbour as for yourself. There is no other law greater than these. 32 And the scribe said to him, Truly, Master, you have well said that he is one, and there is no other but he: 33 And to have love for him with all the heart, and with all the mind, and with all the strength, and to have the same love for his neighbour as for himself, is much more than all forms of offerings.
MKJV(i) 28 And coming up one of the scribes heard them reasoning, knowing that He had answered them well, he asked Him, Which is the first commandment of all? 29 And Jesus answered him, The first of all the commandments is, "Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God is one Lord; 30 and you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength." This is the first commandment. 31 And the second is like this: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. There is no other commandment greater than these. 32 And the scribe said to Him, Right, Teacher, according to truth You have spoken, that God is one, and there is no other besides Him. 33 And to love Him with all the heart, and with all the understanding, and with all the soul, and with all the strength, and to love the neighbor as himself, is more than all the burnt offerings and sacrifices.
LITV(i) 28 And coming up, one of the scribes, hearing them arguing, knowing that He answered them well, he questioned Him, What is the first commandment of all? 29 And Jesus answered him, The first of all the commandments is : "Hear, Israel. The Lord our God is one Lord, 30 and you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul" and with all your mind, "and with all your strength." This is the first commandment. Deut. 6:4, 5 31 And the second is like this, "You shall love your neighbor as yourself." There is not another commandment greater than these. You have spoken according to truth, "that God is one," Deut. 6:4, 5 and "there is no other besides Him;" Deut. 4:35 33 "and to love Him from all the heart", and from all the understanding, "and from all the soul, and from all the strength;" Deut. 6:4, 5 and "to love one's neighbor as oneself" Lev. 19:18 is more than all the burnt offerings and the sacrifices.

And one of the scribes comes and hears them disputing together; and perceiving that he answers them well, asks him, Which is the first misvah of all? 29 And Yah Shua answers him, The first of all the misvoth is, Hear, O Yisra El; Yah Veh our Elohim is one Yah Veh: 30 and, Love Yah Veh your Elohim with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength: this is the first misvah. 31 And the second is like, Love your neighbor as yourself. No other misvah is greater than these. Deuteronomy 6:4, 5, Leviticus 19:8 32 And the scribe says to him, Well, Doctor! You say the truth!   28 G2532 And G1520 one G1122 of the scribes G4334 came, G191 and having heard G846 them G4802 reasoning together, G1492 and perceiving G3754 that G611 he had answered G846 them G2573 well, G1905 asked G846 him, G4169 Which G2076 is G4413 the first G1785 commandment G3956 of all?
  29 G1161 And G2424 Jesus G611 answered G3754 him, G4413 The first G3956 of all G1785 the commandments G191 is, Hear, G2474 O Israel; G2962 The Lord G2257 our G2316 God G2076 is G1520 one G2962 Lord:

  32 G2532 And G1122 the scribe G2036 said G846 to him, G2573 Well, G1320 Master, G2036 you have said G1909   G225 the truth: G3754 for G2076 there is G1520 one G2316 God; G2532 and G2076 there is G3756 none G243 other G4133 but G846 he:

RYLT(i) 28 And one of the scribes having come near, having heard them disputing, knowing that he answered them well, questioned him, 'Which is the first command of all?' 29 and Jesus answered him -- 'The first of all the commands is, Hear, O Israel, the Lord is our God, the Lord is one; 30 and you shall love the Lord your God out of all your heart, and out of your soul, and out of all your understanding, and out of all your strength -- this is the first command; 31 and the second is like it, this, You shall love your neighbor as yourself; -- greater than these there is no other command.' 32 And the scribe said to him, 'Well, Teacher, in truth you have spoken that there is one God, and there is none other but He; 33 and to love Him out of all the heart, and out of all the understanding, and out of all the soul, and out of all the strength, and to love one's neighbor as one's self, is more than all the whole burnt-offerings and the sacrifices.'
EJ2000(i) 28 ¶ And one of the scribes came, having heard their dispute and knowing that he had given a good response unto them, asked him, Which is the principal commandment of all? 29 And Jesus responded unto him, The principal of all the commandments is, Hear, O Israel, The Lord our God, the Lord is one; 30 and thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart and with all thy soul and with all thy thought and with all thy strength: this is the principal commandment. 31 And the second is like it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. There is no other commandment greater than these. 32 Then the scribe said unto him, Well, Master, thou hast said the truth, that God is one, and there is none other outside of him; 33 and to love him with all the heart and with all the understanding and with all the soul and with all the strength and to love his neighbour as himself is more than all the burnt offerings and sacrifices.
CAB(i) 28 Then one of the scribes came, after he heard them reasoning together, and perceiving that He had answered them well, asked Him, "Which is the first commandment of all?" 29 Jesus answered him, "The first of all the commandments is: 'Hear, O Israel, the LORD our God is one LORD. 30 ' And you shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength.' This is the first commandment. 31 And the second, like it, is this: 'You shall love your neighbor as yourself.' There is no other commandment greater than these." 32 So the scribe said to Him, "Well said, Teacher, in truth You said that He is one, and there is no other besides Him. 33 And to love Him with the whole heart, and with the whole understanding, with all the soul, and with all the strength, and to love one's neighbor as oneself, is more than all the whole burnt offerings and sacrifices."
WPNT(i) 28 Then one of the scribes came on the scene, heard them arguing, realized that He had answered them well, and asked Him, “Which is the first commandment of all?” 29 Jesus answered him: “The first of all the commandments is: ‘Hear, O Israel, the LORD your (pl) God, the LORD is one; 30 and you (sg) shall love the LORD your (sg) God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’ This is the first commandment. 31 And the second, like it, is this: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself’. There is no other commandment greater than these.” 32 So the scribe said to Him: “Well said, teacher; you said truly that He is one, and there is no other except He. 33 And to love Him with all the heart and with all the understanding and with all the soul and with all the strength, and to love the neighbor as oneself, is more than all the whole burnt offerings and sacrifices.”
JMNT(i) 28 Now while approaching, one of the scribes (experts in the Law; Torah interpreters; scholars; theologians), hearing their discussing and questioning together [and] seeing (perceiving) that He beautifully gave a discerning answer to them, made inquiry upon Him, "Which and of what sort is [the] foremost (= most important) implanted goal (impartation of the finished product within; inward directive) of them all?" 29 So Jesus gave a decided reply to him, "Foremost (= Most important) is, 'Be habitually listening and hearing [and, thus, obeying], O Israel, [the] Lord [= Yahweh] [is] our God. [The] Lord [Yahweh] is (continually exists being) one. [note: the Sh’ma] 30 'And so, you folks will be loving [the] Lord [= Yahweh] your God from out of the midst of your whole heart, and from out of the midst of your whole soul, and from out of the midst of your whole intellect (throughout the midst of your entire comprehension and full mental ability), and from out of the midst of your whole strength.' [Deut. 6:4-5] 31 " [The] second one [is] the same [or, with other MSS: And {the} second one [is] like this one], 'You folks will continue loving your near-one (or: neighbor; associate) as he were (or: like) yourself.' [Lev. 19:18] There is no other investment with authorization (implanted goal; impartation of the finished product within; inward directive) greater than these!" 32 The scribe (scholar) said to Him, "Teacher, in truth you spoke beautifully (= you gave a fine answer), that He is one and there is no other more than (or: besides) Him. 33 "And this 'to be constantly loving Him' from a whole heart and from the whole understanding, even out of the whole strength, and then to be habitually loving the near-one (neighbor; associate) as he were (or: like) oneself – it is excessively more than the effect of all of the whole burnt-offerings and sacrifices."
NSB(i) 28 One of the other scribes came to him with a question: »What commandment is the first of all?« 29 Jesus answered: »The first is, Hear, O Israel; Jehovah our God is one God (Jehovah). 30 »You should love Jehovah your God with all your heart, and with all your being (with every breath you take) (your life), with your entire mind and with all your strength. (Deuteronomy 6:4) 31 »The second is you should love your neighbor as yourself. No other commandment is greater than these.« (Leviticus 19:18) 32 The scribe said to him: »It is true teacher you’ve said it well that he is one and there is no one else besides him. 33 »To love him with all the heart, and with all understanding, and with total strength, and to love his neighbor as himself, is much more than all the whole burnt offerings and sacrifices.«
