MSTC(i) 17 These are wells without water, and clouds carried about of a tempest, to whom the mist of darkness is reserved forever. 18 For when they have spoken the swelling words of vanity, they beguile with wantonness through the lusts of the flesh them that were clean escaped: but now are wrapped in errors. 19 They promise them liberty, and are themselves the bondservants of corruption. For of whomsoever a man is overcome, unto the same is he in bondage. 20 For if they, after they have escaped from the filthiness of the world through the knowledge of the Lord, and of the saviour Jesus Christ, they are yet tangled again therein and overcome: then is the latter end worse with them than the beginning.
Matthew(i) 17 These are welles wythout water, & cloudes caried about of a tempest, to whom the miste of darkenes is reserued for euer. 18 For when they haue spoken the swellinge wordes of vanitie, they begyle with wantonnes thorowe the lustes of the fleshe, them that were cleane escaped, but nowe are wrapped in errours. 19 They promis them libertie, and are them selues the bonde seruauntes of corrupcyon. DouayRheims(i) 17 These are fountains without water and clouds tossed with whirlwinds, to whom the mist of darkness is reserved. 18 For, speaking proud words of vanity, they allure by the desires of fleshly riotousness those who for a little while escape, such as converse in error: 19 Promising them liberty, whereas they themselves are the slaves of corruption. For by whom a man is overcome, of the same also he is the slave. 20 For if, flying from the pollutions of the world, through the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, they be again entangled in them and overcome: their latter state is become unto them worse than the former.

Mace(i) 17 These are wells without water; clouds agitated with a tempest, who are consigned to the obscurity of eternal darkness. 18 when their language swells with vanity, by applying to the sensual passions of the licentious, they allure those who were escap'd for a while, from such deceivers: 19 whilst they promise others liberty, they themselves are slaves to their corrupt passions. for he that is vanquished, is a slave to the conqueror. 20 As for those who have renounc'd the pollutions of the world, by their owning Jesus Christ for their Lord and saviour, if they are prevail'd upon to be entangled therein again, their last state is worse than the first.
Whiston(i) 17 These are wells without water, and mists that are carried with a tempest, to whom the blackness of darkness is reserved for ever. 18 For when they speak great swelling [words] of vanity, they allure through the lusts of the flesh, through much wantonness, those that in some measure escape from them who live in error: 19 While they promise them liberty, they themselves are the servants of corruption: for of whom a man is overcome, of the same is he brought in bondage. 20 For if after they have escaped the pollutions of the world through the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, they are again entangled therein, and overcome; the latter end is worse with them than the beginning.
Wesley(i) 17 These are wells without water, clouds driven by a tempest, to whom the blackness of darkness is reserved for ever. 18 For by speaking swelling words of vanity, they allure thro' the desire of the flesh, thro' wantonness, those that were clean escaped from them that live in error. 19 While they promise them liberty, themselves are the slaves of corruption; for by whom a man is overcome, by him he is also brought into slavery. 20 For if after they have escaped the pollutions of the world, thro the knowledge of the Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, they are again intangled therein and overcome, their last state is worse then the first.
Worsley(i) 17 These are wells without water, clouds driven by a storm, for whom thick darkness is reserved for ever. 18 For when they speak swelling words of vanity, they ensnare in the lusts of the flesh, through their lasciviousness, those who had indeed withdrawn from such as deal in error; 19 promising them liberty, while they themselves are the slaves of corruption: for by whom any one is vanquished, by him he is also enslaved. 20 For if, after they had escaped the pollutions of the world, through the knowledge of the Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, they are again entangled and vanquished by them, their last state is worse than the first;
Haweis(i) 17 These are fountains without water, clouds driven by a hurricane; for whom the blackness of darkness for ever is reserved. 18 Uttering pompous discourses of inanity, ensnaring by the lusts of the flesh, by lascivious impurities, those who had truly escaped from such as live in a course of delusion. 19 Preaching liberty to them, while they themselves are the slaves of corruption: for by whatever a man is overcome, by that also he is enslaved. 20 For if having escaped from the defilements of the world by the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, they are again enveloped by them and overcome, their last deeds are worse than the first.
Thomson(i) 17 They are wells without water; clouds impelled by a whirlwind, for whom is reserved in the bowels of the earth the gloom of everlasting darkness. 18 For uttering, with a solemn tone, swelling words of vanity, they by the lusts of the flesh. by acts of lasciviousness, ensnare them who are indeed flying from those conversant in error; 19 promising them liberty while they themselves are slaves to corruption; for by whatever one is subdued, by that he is enslaved 20 For if alter fleeing from the pollutions of the world by an acknowledgment of the Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, any are again entangled and overcome by them, the last state of such persons is worse than the first.
Webster(i) 17 These are wells without water, clouds that are carried with a tempest; to whom the mist of darkness is reserved for ever. 18 For when they speak great swelling words of vanity, they allure through the lusts of the flesh, through much wantonness, those that had quite escaped from them who live in error. 19 While they promise them liberty, they themselves are the servants of corruption: for by whom a man is overcome, by the same is he brought into bondage. 20 For if after they have escaped the pollutions of the world through the knowledge of the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, they are again entangled in them, and overcome, the latter end is worse with them than the beginning.

Living_Oracles(i) 17 These are wells without water, clouds driven by a tempest; for whom the blackness of darkness is reserved forever: 18 for, speaking great swelling words of falsehood, they allure by the lusts of the flesh, even by lasciviousness, those who have actually fled away from them who are living in error. 19 They promise them liberty, whilst they themselves are slaves of corruption: for every one is enslaved by that which overcomes him. 20 Now, if, having fled away from the pollutions of the world, through the knowledge of the Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, and being again entangled, they are overcome by them; their last condition is worse than the first.
Etheridge(i) 17 These are wells without water, clouds driven from above, unto whom the blackness of darkness is reserved. 18 For while they speak scoffing words of vanity, they allure with impure desires of the flesh those who almost escaped from them who have their conversation in error. 19 And liberty to them they promise, while they (themselves) are the servants of corruption; for the thing by which a man is overcome, to that he is subject. 20 For if [when] they have escaped from the pollutions of the world through the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jeshu Meshiha, with those very things entangled they are again over-come, their end becomes worse than the beginning.
Murdock(i) 17 These are wells without water, clouds driven by a tempest, persons for whom is reserved the blackness of darkness. 18 For, while they utter astonishing vanity, they seduce, with obscene lusts of the flesh, them who have almost abandoned these that walk in error. 19 And they promise them liberty, while they themselves are the slaves of corruption: for, by whatever thing a man is vanquished, to that is he enslaved. 20 For if, when they have escaped the pollutions of the world by the knowledge of our Lord and Redeemer Jesus the Messiah, they become again involved in the same, and are vanquished, their latter state is worse than the former.
Sawyer(i) 17 (1:5) These are fountains without water, clouds driven by a tempest, to which is reserved the blackness of darkness. 18 For speaking extravagant words of vanity, they entice with carnal desires of lewdness those scarcely escaped from them, those living in error, 19 promising them liberty, when they themselves are servants of corruption; for by whatever a man is overcome, to this is he made a servant. 20 For if having escaped the defilements of the world by a knowledge of the Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, they are again entangled and overcome by them, the last state of those persons is worse than the first.
Diaglott(i) 17 These are fountains without water, and fogs by a whirlwind being driven; for which the gloom of the darkness for an age has been kept. 18 Swellings for of folly speaking they allure by lusts of flesh, by impurities, those scarcely having fled away from those in error living; 19 freedom to them promising themselves slaves being of the corruption; by what for any one has been over come, by this also he has been enslaved. 20 If for having fled away from the pollution of the world by a knowledge of the Lord and Savior Jesus Anointed, with these and again having been entangled they are overcome, has become to them the things last worse of the first.
ABU(i) 17 These are wells without water, mists driven by a tempest, to whom the blackness of darkness is reserved forever. 18 For, speaking swelling words of vanity, in lusts of the flesh they allure, by wanton ways, such as partly escape those who live in error; 19 promising them liberty, while they themselves are servants of corruption; for by what a man is overcome, by the same he is also brought into bondage. 20 For if, having escaped the pollutions of the world through the knowledge of the Lord and Savior Jesus Christy but having again become entangled therein they are overcome, the last state is become worse with them than the first.
Anderson(i) 17 These men are fountains without water, clouds driven by a tempest, for whom the gloom of darkness is reserved forever. 18 For by speaking boastful words of folly, they allure through the lusts of the flesh, and through lasciviousness, those who had really escaped from those who live in error. 19 While they promise them freedom, they themselves are the servants of corruption: for by whatever any man is overcome, he is also enslaved. 20 For if, after they have escaped the pollutions of the world, through the knowledge of the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, they are again entangled in these, and overcome by them, the last state of such is worse than the first.
Noyes(i) 17 These are wells without water, and mists driven by a tempest; for whom the blackness of darkness is reserved. 18 For speaking great swelling words of vanity, they allure in the lusts of the flesh, by dissolute ways, such as were in some measure escaping from those who live in error; 19 promising them liberty, while they themselves are slaves of corruption; for by what a man is overcome, by the same is he also brought into bondage. 20 For if after they have escaped the pollutions of the world through the knowledge of the Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, they are again entangled therein and overcome, the last state is worse with them than the first.
YLT(i) 17 These are wells without water, and clouds by a tempest driven, to whom the thick gloom of the darkness to the age hath been kept; 18 for overswellings of vanity speaking, they do entice in desires of the flesh—lasciviousnesses, those who had truly escaped from those conducting themselves in error, 19 liberty to them promising, themselves being servants of the corruption, for by whom any one hath been overcome, to this one also he hath been brought to servitude, 20 for, if having escaped from the pollutions of the world, in the acknowledging of the Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, and by these again being entangled, they have been overcome, become to them hath the last things worse than the first,
JuliaSmith(i) 17 These are fountains wanting water, clouds impelled by a hurricane; for whom the obscurity of darkness has been kept forever. 18 For speaking excessive things of vanity, they decoy with the eager desires of the flesh, for licentiousness, them having truly escaped from those turned back in error. 19 Promising them liberty, they being servants of corruption: for by whom any is conquered, by him has he been made to serve. 20 For if having escaped the pollutions of the world by the knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, and again entangling with these, they be conquered, the last things have been to them worse than the first.
Darby(i) 17 These are springs without water, and mists driven by storm, to whom the gloom of darkness is reserved [for ever]. 18 For [while] speaking great highflown words of vanity, they allure with [the] lusts of [the] flesh, by dissoluteness, those who have just fled those who walk in error, 19 promising them liberty, while they themselves are slaves of corruption; for by whom a man is subdued, by him is he also brought into slavery. 20 For if after having escaped the pollutions of the world through [the] knowledge of the Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, again entangled, they are subdued by these, their last state is worse than the first.
ERV(i) 17 These are springs without water, and mists driven by a storm; for whom the blackness of darkness hath been reserved. 18 For, uttering great swelling [words] of vanity, they entice in the lusts of the flesh, by lasciviousness, those who are just escaping from them that live in error; 19 promising them liberty, while they themselves are bondservants of corruption; for of whom a man is overcome, of the same is he also brought into bondage. 20 For if, after they have escaped the defilements of the world through the knowledge of the Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, they are again entangled therein and overcome, the last state is become worse with them than the first.
ASV(i) 17 These are springs without water, and mists driven by a storm; for whom the blackness of darkness hath been reserved.

19 G1861 promising G846 them G1657 liberty, G846 while they themselves G5225 are G1401 bondservants G5356 of corruption; G1063 for G3739 of whom G5100 a man G2274 is overcome, G5129 of the same G1402 is he also brought into bondage.
20 G1063 For G1487 if, G668 after they have escaped G3393 the defilements G2889 of the world G1722 through G1922 the knowledge G2962 of the Lord G2532 and G4990 Saviour G2424 Jesus G1161 Christ, G1707 they are G3825 again G1707 entangled G5125 therein G2274 and overcome, G2078 the last state G1096 is G5501 become worse G846 with them G4413 than the first.
JPS_ASV_Byz(i) 17 These are springs without water, clouds driven by a storm, for whom the blackness of darkness hath been reserved for ever. 18 For, uttering great swelling words of vanity, they entice in the lusts of the flesh, by lasciviousness, those who have indeed escaped from them that live in error, 19 promising them liberty, while they themselves are bondservants of corruption, for of whom a man is overcome, of the same is he also brought into bondage. 20 For if, after they have escaped the defilements of the world through the knowledge of the Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, they are again entangled therein and overcome, the last state is become worse with them than the first.
Rotherham(i) 17 These, are fountains without water, and mists, by a tempest, driven along,––for whom, the gloom of darkness, hath been reserved; 18 For, great swelling words of vanity, uttering, they entice with carnal covetings––in wanton ways––them who are, well–nigh, escaping from the men who, in error, have their behaviour; 19 Promising, freedom to them, they themselves, being all the while, slaves of corruption,––for, by whom one hath been defeated, by the same, hath he become enslaved,–– 20 For, if, having escaped from the defilements of the world by a personal knowledge of the Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, but, by the same having again become entangled, they are defeated, the, last, state hath become, for them, worse than, the first;
Twentieth_Century(i) 17 These men are like springs without water, or mists driven before a gale; and for them the blackest darkness has been reserved. 18 With boastful and foolish talk, they appeal to the passions of man's lower nature, and, by their profligacy, entice those who are just escaping from the men who live such misguided lives. 19 They promise them freedom, while they themselves are slaves to corrupt habits; for a man is the slave of anything to which he gives way. 20 If, after having escaped the polluting influences of the world, through knowing our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, men are again entangled in them, and give way to them, their last state has become worse than their first.
Godbey(i) 17 These are fountains without water, and mists driven away by the storm, for which the blackness of darkness has been reserved. 18 For speaking swelling words of vanity, in the lusts of the flesh they beguile with their impurities, those that have but partially escaped, who are still moving about in their delusion; 19 promising them liberty, they themselves being the slaves of corruption: for to whatsoever any one has been subordinated, to this he has become enslaved. 20 For if having escaped the pollutions of the world through the perfect knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, and having again become entangled in these things, they are overcome, the last state has to them become worse than the first.
WNT(i) 17 These people are wells without water, mists driven along by a storm, men for whom the dense darkness has been reserved. 18 For, while they pour out their frivolous and arrogant talk, they use earthly cravings--every kind of immorality--as a bait to entrap men who are just escaping from the influence of those who live in error. 19 And they promise them freedom, although they are themselves the slaves of what is corrupt. For a man is the slave of any one by whom he has been worsted in fight. 20 For if, after escaping from the pollutions of the world through a full knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, people are once more entangled in these pollutions and are overcome, their last state has become worse than their first.
Worrell(i) 17 These are fountains without water, and mists driven by a storm, for whom the blackness of darkness has been reserved. 18 For, uttering great swelling words of vanity, they entice, in desires of the flesh, by their lasciviousness, those just escaping from those who live in error; 19 promising them liberty, while they themselves are slaves of corruption; for by what one is overcome by this he has become enslaved. 20 For if, after having escaped the defilements of the world in a full knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, but, having again become entangled with these, they are overcome, the last state has become worse with them than the first.
Moffatt(i) 17 These people are waterless fountains and mists driven by a squall, for whom the nether gloom of darkness is reserved. 18 By talking arrogant futilities they beguile with the sensual lure of fleshly passion those who are just escaping from the company of misconduct — 19 promising them freedom, when they are themselves enslaved to corruption (for a man is the slave of whatever overpowers him). 20 After escaping the pollutions of the world by the knowledge of our Lord and saviour Jesus Christ, if they get entangled and overpowered again, the last state is worse for them than the first.
Goodspeed(i) 17 Such men are dried-up springs, clouds driven before the storm, and they are doomed to utter darkness. 18 They utter arrogant nonsense and use physical cravings to lure into immorality men who are just escaping from among those who live in error; 19 promising them freedom when they are themselves slaves of destruction; for a man is the slave of whatever overcomes him. 20 For if after men have escaped the corrupting influences of the world through the knowledge of the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, they again become entangled in them and are overcome by them, their final condition is worse than their former one.
Riverside(i) 17 These men are springs without water, storm-driven mists for whom the blackness of darkness is reserved. 18 For by speaking great empty swelling words they entrap in the passions of the flesh — wanton excesses — those who are nearly escaping from those who live in error. 19 While they promise them liberty they themselves are the slaves of corruption; for by whatever any one is overcome to that he is enslaved. 20 For if, after they have escaped the defilement of the world by the knowledge of the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, they have been again entangled and overcome, their last state has become worse than the first.
MNT(i) 17 Such men are like waterless springs, or mists storm-driven; for them the blackness of darkness has been reserved. 18 For speaking great swelling words of vanity, they entangle, by their lasciviousness, in the lusts of the flesh, those who are just about to escape from the men that live in misconduct. 19 They promise them liberty, while they themselves are slaves of rottenness! (For indeed a man is the slave of anything which masters him.) 20 For if, after having escaped the pollutions of the world, through the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, men are again entangled in them and overpowered, their last state is become worse than their first.
Lamsa(i) 17 These men are springs without water, as clouds that are carried with a tempest; the mist of darkness is reserved to them forever. 18 For when they speak great swelling words of vanity, they allure through the sensual lusts of the flesh; but there are those who flee at a word of warning from those who live in error. 19 They, while they promise liberty, themselves are the slaves of corruption: for a man is overcome by whatever it is that enslaves him. 20 For if after they have escaped the pollutions of the world through knowledge of our LORD and Saviour Jesus Christ, they are again entangled by these very things, and overcome, the latter end is worse with them than the beginning.
CLV(i) 17 These are waterless springs, and mists driven by a storm, for whom the gloom of darkness has been kept." 18 For, uttering pompous vanity, they are luring by the lusts of the flesh, in wantonness, those who are scarcely fleeing from those who are behaving with deception;" 19 promising them freedom, they are inherently slaves of corruption; for by whom anyone is discomfited, to this one he has been enslaved also." 20 For if, while fleeing from the defilements of the world by the recognition of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, yet, being again involved in these, they are being discomfited, their last state has become worse than the first."
Williams(i) 17 Such men are dried-up springs, clouds driven by the storm, and they are doomed to densest darkness. 18 For by uttering arrogant nonsense, through base desires of the lower nature, they entice into immorality men who are just escaping from those who live in error, 19 promising them freedom, though they are slaves of destruction themselves; for a man is the slave of anything that conquers him. 20 For if, after men have escaped the corrupting ways of the world through a full knowledge of the Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, they again become entangled in them and are conquered by them, then their last condition is worse than their former one.
BBE(i) 17 These are fountains without water, and mists before a driving storm; for whom the eternal night is kept in store. 18 For with high-sounding false words, making use of the attraction of unclean desires of the flesh, they get into their power those newly made free from those who are living in error; 19 Saying that they will be free, while they themselves are the servants of destruction; because whatever gets the better of a man makes a servant of him. 20 For if, after they have got free from the unclean things of the world through the knowledge of the Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, they are again taken in the net and overcome, their last condition is worse than their first.
MKJV(i) 17 These are wells without water, clouds driven with a tempest, for whom the blackness of darkness is reserved forever. 18 For when they speak great swelling words of vanity, they lure through the lusts of the flesh, by unbridled lust, the ones who were escaping from those who live in error; 19 promising them liberty, they themselves are the slaves of corruption. For by whom anyone has been overcome, even to this one he has been enslaved. 20 For if they have escaped the pollutions of the world through the full knowledge of the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, and are again entangled, they have been overcome by these, their last things are worse than the first.
LITV(i) 17 These are springs without water, clouds being driven by tempest, for whom the blackness of darkness is kept forever. 18 For speaking great swelling words of vanity, by the lusts of the flesh, by unbridled lusts, they allure those indeed escaping the ones living in error, 19 promising them freedom, though themselves being slaves of corruption; for by whom anyone has been overcome, even to this one he has been enslaved. 20 For if by a full knowledge of the Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, they have escaped the defilements of the world, and again being entangled they have been overcome by these, then their last things have become worse than the first.
ECB(i) 17 These are waterless fountains - clouds driven by a whirlwind to whom the mist of darkness is guarded to the eons. 18 For by uttering overbulgings of vanity, through the pantings of the flesh, by lechery, they entrap them, who indeed escaped from them who remain in seduction. 19 While they pre-evangelize liberty, they themselves are the servants of corruption: for by whom anyone is belittled, by him is he subservient. 20 For if, having escaped the defilements of the cosmos through the knowledge of Adonay and Saviour Yah Shua Messiah, and entangled again by these and belittled, their finality becomes worse than at first.
AUV(i) 17 Such people are like springs that give no water and clouds driven by the winds. [Only] the blackest darkness awaits them. 18 [Although] their talk is big, what they say is worthless, and by [offering people] fleshly desires [i.e., sexual gratification], they lead people astray, who are barely escaping from the error of the world. 19 [Although] these people promise “liberty,” they themselves are slaves to corrupting influences, for people are slaves to whatever controls them. 20 For if people who have escaped from the defiling practices of the world by coming to know our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, become tangled up in them again, and are overcome by them, these people are worse off than before they were converted.
ACV(i) 17 These men are waterless wells, and clouds driven by a fierce wind, for whom the gloom of darkness has been reserved into an age. 18 For, uttering swollen things of vanity, they entice (to sensuality by lusts of flesh) those who actually escaped from those who live in error, 19 promising them freedom, while they themselves are bondmen of corruption, for by what any man has been overcome, of this he has also been enslaved. 20 For if, having escaped the defilements of the world by knowledge of the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, and, having been again entangled in these, they are overcome, the last things have become worse for them than the first.
Common(i) 17 These are springs without water and mists driven by a storm; for them the blackest darkness has been reserved. 18 For speaking out arrogant words of vanity, they entice by fleshly desires, by sensuality, those who barely escape from the ones who live in error. 19 They promise them freedom, while they themselves are slaves of corruption; for whatever overcomes a man, to that he is enslaved. 20 For if, after they have escaped the defilements of the world by the knowledge of the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, they are again entangled in them and are overcome, the last state has become worse for them than the first.
WEB(i) 17 These are wells without water, clouds driven by a storm; for whom the blackness of darkness has been reserved forever. 18 For, uttering great swelling words of emptiness, they entice in the lusts of the flesh, by licentiousness, those who are indeed escaping from those who live in error; 19 promising them liberty, while they themselves are bondservants of corruption; for a man is brought into bondage by whoever overcomes him. 20 For if, after they have escaped the defilement of the world through the knowledge of the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, they are again entangled in it and overcome, the last state has become worse for them than the first.

RYLT(i) 17 These are wells without water, and clouds by a tempest driven, to whom the thick gloom of the darkness to the age has been kept; 18 for overswellings of vanity speaking, they do entice in desires of the flesh -- lasciviousnesses, those who had truly escaped from those conducting themselves in error, 19 liberty to them promising, themselves being servants of the corruption, for by whom any one has been overcome, to this one also he has been brought to servitude, 20 for, if having escaped from the pollutions of the world, in the acknowledging of the Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, and by these again being entangled, they have been overcome, become to them has the last things worse than the first,
EJ2000(i) 17 These are wells without water, clouds that are brought by a whirlwind, to whom gross darkness is reserved for ever. 18 For speaking arrogant words of vanity, they allure through the lusts of the flesh, through much wantonness, those that were clean escaped from those who converse in error, 19 promising them liberty, being they themselves the slaves of corruption: for he who is overcome by someone is subject to bondage by the one that overcame him. 20 Certainly, if having separated themselves from the contaminations of the world, by the knowledge of the Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, they again entangle themselves therein and are overcome, their latter end is made worse for them than the beginnings.
CAB(i) 17 These are waterless wells, clouds being driven by a storm, for whom the darkness of the netherworld has been reserved forever. 18 For when they speak haughty words of emptiness, they entice through the lusts of the flesh, through lewdness, those who are escaping from those who are living in error, 19 promising to them freedom, while they themselves are slaves of corruption; for by whom anyone has been defeated, by this one also he has been enslaved. 20 For if having escaped from the corruptions of the world by the knowledge of the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, yet by these, having become entangled they are defeated, the latter end has become worse for them than the first.
WPNT(i) 17 These are waterless springs, clouds driven by a storm, for whom the blackest of the darkness has been reserved forever. 18 Because speaking pompous words of emptiness they entice through fleshly lusts, through licentiousness, those who have actually escaped from those who are living in error, 19 promising them freedom while they themselves are slaves of corruption; for by whom a person is overcome, by him also he is brought into bondage. 20 For if, after they have escaped the defilements of the world through the real knowledge of the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, they are again entangled in them and overcome, the latter circumstances have become worse for them than the first ones.
JMNT(i) 17 These people are (or: exist being) springs without water and clouds (or: mists; fogs) being constantly driven by (or: under) a storm (or: a squall), for whom the gloom of the darkness has been kept for an indefinite period of time. 18 For you see, in continuously uttering over-swollen (over-weighted; extravagant; pompous) things pertaining to emptiness (vanity; futility), they are constantly using bait to trap – in the midst of cravings (or: full passions) of flesh (= alienated human nature) by outrageous (or: licentious) behavior – those folks scarcely [other MSS: actually] fleeing from the people habitually twisting themselves up in deception (in wandering), 19 while constantly promising freedom (or: liberty) to them, they themselves continuously subsist inherently being slaves of the corruption (the ruin; the decay) – for you see, by whom (or: by what) anyone has been, and now exists being, made inferior (or: less), to this one (or: by this thing) he has [some MSS add: also] been enslaved, and now exists as a slave. 20 For if, fleeing from the stains (pollution; defilements) of the ordered System (dominant world of religion, society, culture, economy and politics; or: secular realm), within an accurate (or: full; added) intimate and experiential knowledge of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, but yet being interwoven (intertwined) back again in (or: by) these things, they are continuing to be inferior (less; or: they are repeatedly worsted), the last things (situations; conditions) have come to be (or: have been birthed) for them (to them; in them; with them) worse than the first ones.
NSB(i) 17 These are springs without water, and mists driven by a storm, for whom the gloom of darkness has been reserved. 18 For, uttering arrogant words of vanity, they entice in the desires (lusts) of the flesh, by sensuality (lasciviousness), those who are just escaping from the ones who live in error. 19 They promise them freedom, while they are bondservants of corruption. A man is brought into bondage by one and enslaved by another. 20 After they have escaped the defilements of the world through the knowledge of the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, they are again entangled and overcome; the last state is worse with them than the first.
ISV(i) 17 These men are dried-up springs, mere clouds driven by a storm. BLB(i) 17 These are springs without water and mists being driven by storm, for whom gloom of darkness has been reserved. 18 For speaking arrogant words of vanity, they entice to sensuality with the passions of the flesh those barely escaping from those living in error, 19 promising them freedom, themselves being slaves of corruption. For by what anyone has been subdued, by that also he is enslaved. 20 For if, having escaped the pollutions of the world through the knowledge of the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, now again having been entangled in these they are subdued, the last state has become worse to them than the first.
BSB(i) 17 These men are springs without water and mists driven by a storm. For a man is a slave to whatever has mastered him. 20 If indeed they have escaped the corruption of the world through the knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, only to be entangled and overcome by it again, their final condition is worse than it was at first.
MSB(i) 17 These men are springs without water and clouds driven by a storm. MLV(i) 17 These people are waterless springs and clouds driven by a gale of wind to whom the blackness of darkness has been kept forever. 18 For while speaking flattering-words of futility, they entice (with the lusts of the flesh to unbridled-lusts) those who really had fled away from those who conduct themselves in error. 19 They are promising them freedom, when they themselves are bondservants of corruption. For in what anyone has been succumbed, in this, he has also been enslaved. 20 For if, having fled away from the defilements of the world in the full knowledge of the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, and having been again entangled, they are succumbed in these things, the last state has become worse to them than the first.
