Genesis 18

VIN(i) 1 And the Lord appeared unto him in the grove of Mamre; while he was sitting at the door of the tent in the heat of the day. 2 And he lifted up his eyes and saw, and behold, three men were standing near him. And he saw them and ran from the doorway of the tent to meet them. And he bowed down to the ground. 3 And he said, "My lord, if I have found favor in your eyes do not pass by your servant. 4 Let a little water be brought and wash your feet, and rest under the tree. 5 I will get a morsel of bread so you can refresh your heart. After that you may go your way, now that you have come to your servant." They said, "Very well, do as you have said." 6 Abraham hurried into the tent to Sarah, and said, “Quickly prepare three seahs of fine meal, knead it, and make cakes.” 7 Abraham ran to the herd, and fetched a tender and good calf, and gave it to the servant. He hurried to dress it. 8 And he took butter and milk and the calf which he had dressed and set it before them, and they ate, and be stood by them under the tree. 9 They asked him, “Where is Sarah, your wife?” He said, “There, in the tent.” 10 And he said, "I will certainly return to you ⌊in the spring⌋, and look, Sarah your wife will have a son." Now Sarah was listening at the doorway of the tent, and which was behind him. 11 Abraham and Sarah were old, well advanced in age. Sarah had passed the age of childbearing. 12 So Sarah laughed to herself saying, "After I am worn out and my husband is old, shall this pleasure be to me?" 13 The LORD said to Abraham, "Why did Sarah laugh, saying, 'Will I really bear a child, yet I am old?' 14 Is anything too hard for the LORD? At the set time I will return to you, when the season comes round and Sarah will have a son. 15 Sarah denied saying: "I did not laugh!" She was afraid. He said: "But you did laugh!" 16 Then the men set out from there, and they looked down upon Sodom. And Abraham went with them to send them on their way. 17 And the Lord said: Can I hide from Abraham what I am about to do: 18 Abraham will surely become a great and strong nation, and all the nations of the earth will be blessed on account of him. 19 For I know him that he will command his children and his household after him, that they keep the way of the LORD, to do after right and conscience, that the LORD may bring upon Abraham that he hath promised him." 20 And the LORD said, "The cry of Sodom and Gomorrah is great, and their sin is exceeding grievous. 21 I will go down now, and see whether their deeds are as bad as the reports which have come to me. If not, I will know. 22 And the men turned thence, and went towards Sodom; and Abraham remained yet standing before the LORD. 23 And Abraham drew near to Yahweh and said, "Will you also sweep away the righteous with the wicked? 24 What if there are fifty righteous within the city? Will you consume and not spare the place for the fifty righteous who are in it? 25 Far be it from you to do such a thing as this, to kill the righteous with the wicked, that the righteous would be as the wicked! Far be it from you! Will not the Judge of all the earth do justice?" 26 the LORD said, “If I find in Sodom fifty righteous within the city, then I will spare the whole place for their sake.” 27 Then Abraham answered and said, Now I have taken upon me to speak to my Lord, I who am but dust and ashes! 28 "Suppose there were five less than the fifty righteous. Would you destroy the entire city for lack of five?" So He (God) said: "If I find there forty-five, I will not destroy it." 29 And once again he spoke to him and said, "What if forty are found there?" And he answered, "I will not do it on account of the forty." 30 And he said, "Please, let not my Lord be angry, and I will speak. What if thirty be found there?" And he answered, "I will not do it if I find thirty there." 31 He said, "See now, I have taken it on myself to speak to the Lord. What if there are twenty found there?" He said, "I will not destroy it for the twenty's sake." 32 He said, Oh don't let the Lord be angry, and I will speak just once more. What if ten are found there? He said, I will not destroy it for the ten's sake. 33 And when the LORD had finished speaking to Abraham, then Abraham returned to his place.
