Joshua 2

VIN(i) 1 Then Joshua son of Nun secretly sent two men from Acacia Grove as spies, saying, "Go, view the land, especially Jericho." So they went, and entered the house of a prostitute whose name was Rahab, and spent the night there. 2 The king of Jericho was told, "Look, some men from the Israelites have come here tonight to search out the land." 3 So the king of Jericho sent for Rahab and ordered her, "Bring out the men who came to visit you and lodged in your house, because they've come to scout out the entire land." 4 But the woman took the two men and hid them. And she said, "Yes, the men came to me, but I did not know where they were from. 5 At dusk, when it was time to close the city gates, the men left. I don't know where the men went. Go after them quickly, and you might overtake them." 6 But she had brought them up to the roof, and hidden them under the stalks of flax which she had laid in order on the roof. 7 Now they that were sent, pursued after them, by the way that leadeth to the fords of the Jordan: and as soon as they were gone out, the gate was presently shut. 8 Before the scouts had lain down, she went up to them on the roof 9 and said to the men, "I know that the LORD has given you the land, and that dread of you has fallen on us, and that all the inhabitants of the land melt away in fear because of your presence. 10 For we have heard how the LORD dried up the water of the reed sea before you, when you came out of Egypt, and what you did unto the two kings of the Amorites on the other side Jordan; Sihon, and Og, which ye utterly destroyed. 11 When we heard these reports, we all became terrified and discouraged because of you, for the LORD your God is God in heaven above and on the earth beneath. 12 Now therefore, I pray you, swear to me by the LORD, since I have showed you kindness, that you will also show kindness to my father's house, and give me a true token: 13 and you will spare my father and mother, my brothers and sisters, and all that belongs to them; you will deliver our lives from death." 14 And the men said to her, "Our lives for yours. If you do not report this business of ours, we will show you loyalty and faithfulness when the LORD gives us the land." 15 Then she let them down by a rope through the window, for her house was in the side of the wall, and she lived in the wall. 16 And she said to them, "Go to the mountain, so that the pursuers will not find you, and hide yourselves there three days until the pursuers return, and afterward you may go on your way." 17 The men said to her: »We will be free from this oath you made us swear. 18 When we come to the land, you must tie this scarlet cord in the window through which you let us down, and you must gather your father and mother, and your brothers, and your whole family to your house. 19 Then if anyone goes out of your house into the street, his blood will be on his head, we will not be responsible; but if any damage comes to anyone in the house, his blood will be on our heads. 20 »if you tell what we are doing we will be released from the oath you made us swear.« 21 She said, “Let it be as you have said.” She sent them away, and they departed. Then she tied the scarlet line in the window. 22 And they came to the hill-country, and remained there three days; and the pursuers searched all the roads, and found them not. 23 The two men returned and went down from the mountain, and they crossed over and came to Joshua son of Nun, and they told him everything that happened to them. 24 And they said to Joshua, The Lord has delivered all the land into our power, and all the inhabitants of that land tremble because of us.
