¹ Then Joshua son of Nun secretly sent two men from Acacia Grove as spies, saying, "Go, view the land, especially Jericho." So they went, and entered the house of a prostitute whose name was Rahab, and spent the night there.

² Send men to explore the land of Canaan, which I'm about to give to the Israelites. Send one man each from his father's clan, every one a prince among them.

¹⁷ When Moses sent them to explore Canaan, he told them: "Go through the Negev and then into the mountain region. ¹⁸ "See what the land is like and whether the people there are strong or weak, few or many. ¹⁹ »Is the land they live in good or bad? Do their cities have walls around them or not? ²⁰ "Is the soil rich or poor? Does the land have trees or not? Do your best to bring back some fruit from the land." It was the season when grapes were beginning to ripen. ²¹ So they went up and explored the land from the wilderness of Zin as far as Rehob toward Lebo-hamath.

⁴⁹ They set up camp on the plains of Moab along the Jordan. Their camp extended from Beth Jeshimoth to Abel Shittim.

¹ Joshua got up early the next morning. Accompanied by all the Israelites, he set out from the Acacia groves and arrived at the Jordan River, where they encamped before crossing it.

¹⁰ And the children of Israel kept the Passover on the fourteenth day of the month, at evening, to the west of Jericho on the opposite side of the Jordan in the plain.

¹ ¶ Now Jericho was tightly shut up because of the sons of Israel; no one went out, and no one came in. ² And the LORD said to Joshua, See, I have given Jericho into your hand, and its king, and the mighty men of war. ³ March around the city, all the soldiers circling the city once. Do this for six days, ⁴ And seven priests shall bear seven trumpets of ram's horns in front of the ark. And the seventh day you shall go around the city seven times, and the priests shall blow with the trumpets. ⁵ "When you hear a long blast with the ram’s horn, all the people will shout with a great shout. The wall of the city will fall down flat, and the people will go up, every man straight in to the city." ⁶ And Joshua the son of Nun called the priests and said to them, Take up the ark of the covenant, and let seven priests carry seven ram's horns in front of the ark of the LORD. ⁷ And he said to the people, Pass on, go around the city, and he who is shall go on before the ark of the LORD. ⁸ It was so, that when Joshua had spoken to the people, the seven priests bearing the seven trumpets of rams' horns before the LORD advanced and blew the trumpets, and the ark of the LORD's covenant followed them. ⁹ The armed men marched ahead of the priests that blew the trumpets, and the rear guard followed the Ark. All the time the priests kept blowing the trumpets. ¹⁰ Joshua issued orders to the army: "You are not to shout or even let your voice be heard. Don't utter a word until I tell you to shout. Then shout!" ¹¹ And the ark of the LORD went around the city, circling once, and they came into the camp and spent the night in the camp. ¹² Joshua got up early the next morning, and the priests picked up the ark of the LORD. ¹³ The seven priests who carried the seven trumpets made from rams' horns preceded the ark of the LORD, blowing their trumpets constantly. The armed men preceded them, and the rear guard followed the ark of the LORD, while the trumpets continued to blow. ¹⁴ And the second day they went around the city once, and returned to the camp. They did this for six days. ¹⁵ They rose early at dawn on the seventh day and marched around the city seven times, just as they had before, except that on that day only they marched around the city seven times. ¹⁶ At the seventh time, when the priests blew the trumpets, Joshua said to the people, “Shout, for the LORD has given you the city! ¹⁷ The city and all that is in it will be devoted to the LORD; only Rahab the prostitute and all who are with her in the house will live, because she hid the messengers whom we sent. ¹⁸ Now as for you, everything that has been turned over for destruction. Don't covet or take any of these things. Otherwise, you'll make the camp of Israel itself an object worthy of destruction, and bring trouble on it. ¹⁹ But all of the silver and gold, and the items of bronze and iron, are holy to the LORD, and they must go to the LORD's treasury." ²⁰ So the army shouted and the trumpets were blown again. As soon as the army heard the sound of the trumpets, they shouted loudly and the wall collapsed. The army charged straight ahead into the city and captured it. ²¹ They turned over everyone in the city for destruction and executed them, including both men and women, young and old, and oxen, sheep, and donkeys. ²² Joshua said to the two men who had spied out the land, “Go into the prostitute's house, and bring the woman and all that she has out from there, as you swore to her.” ²³ And the young men, the spies, went in and brought out Rahab, and her father, and her mother, and her brothers, and all whom she had; yea, they brought all her family, and set them outside the camp of Israel. ²⁴ Then, after burning up the town and everything in it, they put the silver and gold and the vessels of brass and iron into the store-house of the Lord's house. ²⁵ But Joshua spared Rahab the prostitute and her family and all who were with her, and she has lived in the midst of Israel until this day, because she hid the messengers whom Joshua sent to spy out Jericho.

² The children of Dan sent five men of their family, men of valour, from Zorah and from Eshtaol, to spy out the land and to search it, and they said to them, Go, explore the land! They came to the hill country of Ephraim, to the house of Micah, and lodged there.

¹⁴ Then the five men who went to spy out the country of Laish said to their brothers, Do you know that there is in these houses an ephod and household gods, an engraved image and a molten image? Now therefore consider what you have to do.

¹⁷ The five men who had gone to spy out the land went in there and took the engraved image, the ephod, the household gods and the molten image; and the priest stood by the entrance of the gate with the six hundred armed men.

¹⁶ Look, I am sending you out like sheep among wolves; therefore be as shrewd as snakes and as innocent as doves.

⁵ For of this you can be sure: No immoral, impure, or greedy person (that is, an idolater), has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God.

³¹ By faith the prostitute Rahab, because she welcomed the spies in peace, did not perish with those who were disobedient.

²⁵ In the same way was not Rahab, the prostitute, pronounced righteous because of works when she had received the messengers and sent them out by a different road?
