Jeremiah 49 To the people of Ammon: This is what the LORD says: "Does Israel have no sons? Does he have no heir? Why then has Milcom taken possession of Gad, and his people settled in its towns?

VIN⁽ⁱ⁾ ¹ To the people of Ammon: This is what the LORD says: "Does Israel have no sons? Does he have no heir? Why then has Milcom taken possession of Gad, and his people settled in its towns? ² "'That is why the days are coming,' declares the LORD, 'when I will sound the battle cry against Rabbah, where the people of Ammon live. It will become a pile of rubble. Its villages will be burned down.' "'Then Israel will take possession of its inheritance,' says the LORD. ³ "Wail, Heshbon, because Ai is destroyed. Cry out, daughters of Rabbah, put on sackcloth and lament. Run back and forth inside the walls, for Milcom is going into exile along with his priests and his princes. ⁴ Why do you boast in your valleys? Your valleys are ebbing. O unfaithful daughter, who trusted in her treasures, who said, 'Who will come against me?' ⁵ "I will bring terror on you from all around," proclaims the LORD Almighty. "Everyone will be scattered. No one will gather the refugees.'" ⁶ Yet afterward I will restore the fortunes of the Ammonites," declares the LORD. ⁷ Concerning Edom. Thus saith the LORD of hosts: Is there no more wisdom in Teman? is counsel perished from the prudent? is their wisdom spent? ⁸ Flee, turn around! Go to a remote place to stay, residents of Dedan! For I'll bring Esau's disaster on him at the time when I punish him. ⁹ If grape gatherers came to you, would they not leave some gleaning grapes? If thieves came by night, wouldn't they steal until they had enough? ¹⁰ But I'll strip Esau bare. I'll uncover his hiding places so he cannot conceal himself. His offspring, his relatives, and his neighbors will be destroyed, and he will no longer exist. ¹¹ Leave your orphans. I will let them live. And your widows, let them trust in me." ¹² This is what the LORD says: "If those who do not deserve to drink from the cup still drink from it, why should you go unpunished? You will not go unpunished. You must drink from it." ¹³ For I have sworn by Myself, declares the LORD, that Bozrah shall become a ruin, a reproach, a waste, and a curse. And all its cities shall be wastes forever. ¹⁴ I heard a message from the LORD. A messenger was sent among the nations to say: "Assemble and attack Edom. Get ready for battle." ¹⁵ For lo, I will make you small among the nations, despised among men. ¹⁶ Your terror has deceived you, the pride of your heart, O you who dwell in the clefts of the rock, you who seize the height of the hill. Though you make your nest high like the eagle, from there I will bring you down," declares the LORD. ¹⁷ "Edom will become an object of horror. Everyone who passes by her will be horrified and will scoff because of all her wounds. ¹⁸ Just like the overthrow of Sodom and Gomorrah and their neighbors," says the LORD, "no one will live there. No human being will reside in it. ¹⁹ Look, like a lion he comes up from the thickets of the Jordan to a pastureland by a constantly flowing stream. So I will chase him away hurriedly from it. And whoever is chosen I will appoint over it. For who is like me, and who can summon me? And who is this, the shepherd who can stand before me?" ²⁰ Therefore hear the counsel of the LORD that he has taken against Edom; and his thoughts, that he has purposed against the inhabitants of Teman: Surely the least of the flock shall draw them out; surely he shall destroy their habitations with them. ²¹ At the noise of their fall, the earth shall quake, the cry of their voice shall be heard to the reed sea. ²² Look, he will rise up and fly swiftly like an eagle. He will spread his wings against Bozrah, and on that day the hearts of the warriors of Edom will be like the heart of a woman in labor. ²³ Concerning Damascus: Hamath and Arpad are put to shame, for they have heard bad news. They are melted; anxiety is in the sea; it cannot be quiet. ²⁴ Damascus has become feeble; she has turned to flee, and trembling has seized her; anguish and sorrows have taken her like a woman in labor. ²⁵ How the city of praise has not been abandoned! The city of my joy! ²⁶ So her young men shall fall in her streets, and all the men of war shall be silenced in that day, says the LORD Almighty. ²⁷ I will kindle a fire in the walls of Damascus, which shall consume the palace of Benhadad." ²⁸ To Kedar and the kingdoms of Hazor that King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon destroyed: This is what the LORD says: "Arise, go against Kedar! Plunder the people of the east! ²⁹ Their tents and their flocks shall they take; they shall carry away for themselves their curtains, and all their vessels, and their camels; and they shall cry to them, 'Terror on every side.' ³⁰ Flee, go far away, go deep to dwell; O people of Hazor, says the LORD; for Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon has taken counsel against you, and has plotted a plan against you. ³¹ "Arise, go up against a nation at ease, living securely," declares the LORD, "without gates or bars, living alone. ³² Their camels will become booty, their many herds will become spoil. I'll scatter to the winds those who shave the corners of their beards, and I'll bring disaster on them from every side," declares the LORD. ³³ "Hazor will become a dwelling place for jackals, a perpetual wasteland. No one will live there; no human being will reside in it. ³⁴ The word of the LORD that came to Jeremiah the prophet concerning Elam, in the beginning of the reign of Zedekiah king of Judah, saying, ³⁵ So says the LORD Almighty: Behold, I will break the bow of Elam, the chief of their might. ³⁶ I will bring on Elam the four winds from the four quarters of the sky, and will scatter them toward all those winds. There will be no nation where the outcasts of Elam will not come. ³⁷ So I will shatter Elam before their enemies, and before the seekers of their life. And I will bring disaster upon them, my burning anger,' declares the LORD. 'And I will send after them the sword until I have destroyed them. ³⁸ "'I will set my throne in Elam and destroy its king and officials,'declares the LORD. ³⁹ "'Afterward, I will return the captives of Elam,'" declares the LORD.
