Early in the morning, the chief priests, elders, scribes, and the whole Sanhedrin devised a plan. They bound Jesus, led Him away, and handed Him over to Pilate.
"Are you the King of the Jews?" asked Pilate. "It is true," replied Jesus.
The chief priests accused him of many things.
Pilate again asked him, “Have you no answer? See how many things they testify against you!”
But Jesus still made no answer, so that Pilate was amazed.
Now at the time of the feast Pilate usually set a prisoner free whom the people requested.
A man called Barabbas was in prison, with the rioters who had committed murder during a riot.
So the crowd came and began to request that Pilate do for them what he always did.
“Do you want me to release to you the King of the Jews?” Pilate asked.
For he knew it was out of envy that the chief priests had handed Jesus over to him.
But the chief priests stirred up the crowd to have him release Barabbas to them instead.
"What should I do with the one you call the King of the Jews?" Pilate asked.
And again they cry out, Stake!
"Why, what crime has he committed?" asked Pilate. But they vehemently shouted, "Crucify Him!"
And wishing to satisfy the crowd, Pilate released Barabbas to them. But he had Jesus flogged, and handed Him over to be crucified.
Then the soldiers led Jesus away into the palace (that is, the Praetorium) and called the whole company together.
And they put a purple robe on him, and twisting a crown of thorns, they put it on him;
And they began to salute him: Hail, king of the Jews.
Then they struck him on the head with a reed and spat on him; and falling on their knees, they paid homage to him.
And when they had mocked him, they took the purple robe off him, and put his own clothes on him. Then they led him out to crucify him.
Now Simon of Cyrene, the father of Alexander and Rufus, was passing by on his way in from the country, and the soldiers forced him to carry the cross of Jesus.
They brought Jesus to a place called Golgotha, which means The Place of the Skull.
Then they offered him wine mingled with myrrh, but he did not take it.
And they crucify him, and divide his garments, casting lots for them, what each should take.
It was the third hour when they crucified him.
The written notice of the charge against him read, "The king of the Jews."
They crucified two robbers along with him, one at his right and one at his left.
Those who passed by heaped abuse on Him, shaking their heads and saying, “Aha! You who are going to destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days,
'come down from the cross and save yourself!"
In the same way, the chief priests and scribes mocked Him among themselves, saying, “He who saved others cannot even save Himself!
Let the Christ, the King of Israel, come down now from the cross, that we may see and believe." Those who were crucified with him also reviled him.
And when the sixth hour came, darkness came over the whole land until the ninth hour.
And at the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, "Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani?"which means, "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?"
When some of those standing near heard this, they said, "Behold, he is calling Elijah."
And someone ran and filled a sponge with vinegar. He put it on a stick and offered it to Jesus to drink. “Wait!” he said. “Let us see if Elijah comes to take Him down.”
And with a loud cry, Jesus breathed his last.
And the curtain of the temple was torn in two, from top to bottom.
And when the centurion, who stood in front of him, saw that he so cried out and expired, he said, Truly this man was the Son of God.
And there were also women watching from a distance. Among them were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James the younger and of Joseph, and Salome.
Who also when he was in Galilee, followed him and ministered to him, and many other women who had come up with him to Jerusalem.
It was the Day of Preparation, that is, the day before the Sabbath. Since it was already evening,
Joseph of Arimathea, a highly honored member of the council, who was himself looking for the kingdom of God, ventured to go to Pilate and ask for Jesus' body.
Pilate marveled that he was already dead; and summoning the centurion, he asked him if he was already dead.
And when he learned from the centurion that it was so, he gave the body to Joseph.
Joseph bought a linen cloth, took down the body of Jesus, wrapped it in the cloth, and laid it in a tomb that had been cut out of the rock. Then he rolled a stone against the entrance to the tomb.
Mary Magdalene and Mary, the mother of Joses, saw where he was laid.
