Mark 14

VIN(i) 1 Now the Passover and the Feast of Unleavened Bread were two days away, and the chief priests and scribes were looking for a covert way to arrest Jesus and kill Him. 2 But they said, “Not during the feast, or the people may riot”. 3 While Jesus was in Bethany sitting at the table in the home of Simon the leper, a woman arrived with an alabaster jar of very expensive perfume made from pure nard. She broke open the jar and poured the perfume on his head. 4 But some of those present expressed their indignation to one another: “Why this waste of perfume? 5 It could have been sold for over three hundred denarii and the money given to the poor.” And they scolded her. 6 But Jesus said, "Leave her alone. Why are you bothering her? She has done a beautiful thing for me, 7 The poor you will always have with you, and you can help them whenever you want. But you will not always have Me. 8 She has done what she could. She poured perfume on my body in preparation for my burial. 9 And truly I tell you, wherever the gospel is preached in all the world, what she has done will also be told in memory of her.” 10 Then Judas Iscariot, one of the Twelve, went to the chief priests to betray Jesus to them. 11 They were delighted to hear this, and they promised to give him money. So Judas began to look for an opportunity to hand Him over. 12 And the first day of the feast of Unleavened Bread, the day for killing the paschal lamb, his disciples asked him, "Where do you want us to go and make preparation for you to eat the Passover?" 13 And he sent two of his disciples and said to them, "Go into the city and a man carrying a jar of water will meet you. Follow him, 14 and whichever house he enters, say to the owner, ‘The Teacher asks: Where is My guest room, where I may eat the Passover with My disciples?’ 15 He will show you a large upper room, furnished and ready; make preparations for us there." 16 The disciples went away into the city and found it was as he had told them. So they prepared the passover, 17 When evening came, Jesus arrived with the Twelve. 18 As they were reclining and eating, he said, "I tell you truly one of you will betray me, one who is now eating with me." 19 They were sad, and said to him one by one, Is it I? 20 "It is one of the Twelve," He replied; "he who is dipping his fingers in the dish with me. 21 The Son of Man will go just as it is written about Him, but woe to that man by whom He is betrayed! It would be better for him if he had not been born.” 22 While they were eating, Jesus took bread, spoke a blessing and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, “Take it; this is My body.” 23 Then He took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it to them, and they all drank from it. 24 He said to them, “This is My blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many. 25 I tell you assuredly that I will not drink again of this fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new in the Kingdom of God.” 26 When they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives. 27 Jesus said to them, "All of you will fall away, for it is written, 'I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered.' 28 But after I have risen, I will go ahead of you into Galilee.” 29 Peter said to him, "Even if all fall away, I will not." 30 Jesus said to him, "I tell you, this very night before the cock crows twice you yourself will disown me three times!" 31 But Peter kept insisting, “Even if I have to die with You, I will never deny You.” And all the others said the same. 32 They came to a place called Gethsemane, and he said to his disciples, "Sit here while I pray." 33 He took Peter, James, and John along with him, and he began to feel distressed and troubled. 34 And He said to them: “My soul is overwhelmed with grief, to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch.” 35 Going a little farther, He fell to the ground and prayed that, if it were possible, the hour would pass from Him. 36 “Abba, Father,” He said, “all things are possible for You. Take this cup from Me. Yet not what I will, but what You will.” 37 Then he return'd, and having found them sleeping, he said to Peter, Simon, are you asleep? could you not watch one hour? 38 Watch and pray so that you will not enter into temptation. For the spirit is willing, but the body is weak.” 39 And again he went away, and prayed, saying the same thing. 40 And he returned again, and came and found them sleeping, because their eyes were heavy; and they did not know what to say to him. 41 And he came the third time, and said to them, Are you still sleeping and resting? enough, the hour has come; behold, the Son of man is betrayed into the hands of sinners. 42 Rise, let us go; see, my betrayer is at hand." 43 While Jesus was still speaking, Judas, one of the Twelve, arrived, accompanied by a crowd armed with swords and clubs, sent from the chief priests, scribes, and elders. 44 Now the betrayer had arranged a signal with them: “The One I kiss is the man; arrest Him and lead Him away securely.” 45 Going directly to Jesus, he said, “Rabbi!” and kissed Him. 46 Then the men seized Jesus, and arrested him. 47 And one of the bystanders drew his sword and struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his ear. 48 And answering the Jesus said to them: As upon a robber came you out with swords and clubs, to take me. 49 Every day I was with you in the temple teaching, and you did not seize me. But the scriptures must be fulfilled." 50 Then they all deserting him, fled. 51 A certain young man, who was wearing nothing but a linen sheet, was following Jesus. When the men grabbed him, 52 he fled away naked, leaving the sheet behind him. 53 They took Jesus away to the high priest, and all the high priests, elders, and scribes came together. 54 But Peter followed him at a distance, right into the courtyard of the high priest. And he sat with the guards and warmed himself at the fire. 55 Now the chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin were looking for testimony against Jesus in order to put him to death, and they did not find it. 56 For many testified falsely against him, but their testimony did not agree; 57 Then some men stood up and gave false testimony against him, saying, 58 "We heard him say, 'I will destroy this Temple made by hands and in three days I will build another not made by hands.' 59 Yet even then their testimony did not agree. 60 Then the high priest stood up before them and asked Jesus, "Don't you have any answer to what these men are testifying against you?" 61 But he was silent and made no answer. Again the high priest asked him, "Are you the Christ, the Son of the Blessed?" 62 “I am,” said Jesus, “and you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of Power and coming with the clouds of heaven.” 63 The high priest tore his clothes and said, "Why do we need any more witnesses? 64 You have heard the blasphemy. What do you think?" They all condemned him to be worthy of death. 65 Then some of them began to spit on Him. They blindfolded Him, struck Him with their fists, and said to Him, “Prophesy!” And the officers received Him with slaps in His face. 66 Now as Peter was below in the courtyard, one of the servant girls of the high priest came by. 67 And when she saw Peter warming himself, she looked at him, and said, "You also were with the Nazarene, Jesus." 68 But he denied it, saying, I do not know or understand what you are saying. And he went out into the entryway. 69 There the servant girl saw him and again said to those standing nearby, “This man is one of them.” 70 But again he denied it. And after a little while again those standing near said to Peter, "Surely you are one of them; for you are a Gallilean." 71 Then he began to invoke a divine curse and to swear with an oath, "I don't know this man you're talking about!" 72 And immediately the rooster crowed a second time. Then Peter remembered the word Jesus had said to him, "Before the rooster crows twice, you will deny me three times." And he broke down and wept.
