This is the word that came to Jeremiah from the LORD:
"Listen to the words of this covenant, and convey them to the people of Judah and the residents of Jerusalem.
and say to them, So says the LORD, the God of Israel, Cursed is the man who does not obey the words of this covenant,
which I commanded to your ancestors on the day I brought them out of the land of Egypt, from the iron furnace. I said, 'Obey me and do everything that I commanded you. Then you will be my people and I'll be your God.'
that I may establish the oath which I swore to your fathers, to give them a land flowing with milk and honey," as at this day.'" Then I answered, and said, "Amen, LORD."
The LORD said to me, "Proclaim all these words in the towns of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem. You shall say, 'Listen to the words of this covenant and do them.
For I solemnly warned your fathers in the day I brought them up out of the land of Egypt, to this day rising early and warning, saying, Obey My voice.
Yet they did not obey, nor turn their ear, but walked everyone in the stubbornness of their evil heart: therefore I brought on them all the words of this covenant, which I commanded them to do, but they did not do them.'"
And the Lord said to me, There is an evil design at work among the men of Judah and the people of Jerusalem.
They have turned back to the iniquities of their forefathers, who refused to hear my words. They have gone after other gods to serve them. The house of Israel and the house of Judah have broken my covenant which I made with their fathers.
"'Therefore the LORD says: 'I am going to bring a disaster on them that they cannot escape. Although they will cry out to me, I will not listen to them.
The towns of Judah and the residents of Jerusalem will go and cry out to the gods to whom they burn incense, but they'll be no help at all to them in the time of their disaster.
"'Judah, you have as many gods as you have cities. You have set up many altars in Jerusalem to sacrifice to Baal. You have as many detestable altars as there are streets in Jerusalem.'
therefore pray not thou for this people, nor intercede for them with supplication and prayer; for I will not hearken when they call on me in the time of their distress.
What has my beloved to do in my house, seeing she has worked lewdness with many, and the holy flesh is passed from you? when you do evil, then you rejoice.
the LORD called your name, 'A leafy olive tree, beautiful with fine fruit.' With the sound of a great storm he will set fire to it, and its branches will be good for nothing.
And the LORD Almighty who planted you has spoken evil against you, for the evil of the house of Israel and of the house of Judah, which they have done to themselves to provoke Me to anger by offering incense to Baal.
the LORD revealed their plot to me so that I would understand. He showed me what they were doing.
But I was like a docile lamb being brought to the slaughter. And I did not know that they had plotted evils against me, saying, Let us destroy the tree with its fruit, and let us cut him off from the land of the living, so that his name may be remembered no more.
But, O LORD Almighty who judges rightly, who tries the heart and the mind, let me see Your vengeance on them. For to You I have revealed my cause.
Therefore, thus said the LORD concerning the men of Anathoth, who are seeking your life, saying:Do not prophesy in the name of the LORD, And you do not die by our hands."
therefore thus says the LORD of hosts, "Look, I will punish them: the young men shall die by the sword; their sons and their daughters shall die by famine;
And a remnant will not be left for them, for I will bring disaster to the people of Anathoth, the year of their punishment."
