2 Kings 4

ECB(i) 1
THE OIL OF THE WIDOW
And one woman of the women of the sons of the prophets cries to Eli Shua, saying, Your servant my man died; and you know your servant awed Yah Veh: and the exactor comes to take my two children for servants. 2 And Eli Shua says to her, What work I for you? Tell me, what have you in the house? And she says, Your maid has naught in the house, except an anointing flask of oil. 3 And he says, Go, ask for instruments of all your fellow tabernaclers - empty instruments; diminish not: 4 and when you come in shut the door on you and on your sons; and pour into all those instruments; and pluck the full ones. 5 So she goes from him and shuts the door on her and on her sons; they bring near to her; and she pours. 6 And so be it, the instruments fill up; and she says to her son, Bring near me another instrument. And he says to her, There are no more instruments. And the oil stays: 7 and she goes and tells the man of Elohim: and he says, Go, sell the oil and shalam your lender and you and your sons live from the rest. 8
THE UPPER ROOM OF ELI SHUA
And so be it, on a day, Eli Shua passes to Shunem; and there is a great woman; and she lays hold on him to eat bread: and so so be it, as often as he passes by, he turns in to eat bread. 9 And she says to her man, Behold now, I perceive that this is a holy man of Elohim, who passes by us continually: 10 O that we work, I beseech you, a little upper room on the wall; and set a bed and a table there for him; and a throne and a menorah: and so be it, that he comes to us, and turns in here. 11
A SON IS PROPHESIED AND BIRTHED
And so be it, on a day, he comes there and turns aside into the upper room and lies down there: 12 and he says to Gay Chazi his lad, Call this Shunemiyth. - and he calls her, and she stands at his face. 13 And he says to him, Say now to her, Behold, you tremble all this trembling; What work we for you? What word we to the sovereign - or to the governor of the host? And she says, I settle among my own people. 14 And he says, What then work we for her? And Gay Chazi says, Verily, she has no son and her man is old. 15 And he says, Call her. - and he calls her, and she stands in the portal. 16 And he says, About this season, according to the time of life, you embrace a son. And she says, No, my adoni, you man of Elohim; lie not to your maid. 17 - and the woman conceives and births a son at the season Eli Shua worded to her according to the time of life. 18
THE SON DIES
And the child grows, and so be it, on a day, he goes to his father to the harvesters, 19 and he says to his father, My head! My head! And he says to a lad, Lift him to his mother: 20 - and he lifts him and brings him to his mother; and he settles on her knees until noon and dies. 21 And she ascends and lies him down on the bed of the man of Elohim and shuts him in and comes out. 22 And she calls to her man and says, Send me, I beseech, one of the lads and one of the she burros; and I run to the man of Elohim and return. 23 And he says, Why go you to him today? It is neither new moon nor shabbath. And she says, Shalom. 24 And she harnesses a she burro and says to her lad, Drive! Go! Restrain not your riding for me, unless I say so. 25 So she goes and comes to the man of Elohim - to mount Karmel. And so be it, the man of Elohim sees her afar off, and he says to Gay Chazi his lad, Behold, that Shunemiyth: 26 run now, I beseech you, to meet her and say to her, Shalom with you? Shalom with your man? Shalom with the child? And she says, Shalom! 27 And when she comes to the man of Elohim to the mountain, she holds him by the feet: and Gay Chazi approaches to expel her. And the man of Elohim says, Release her; for her soul is embittered: and Yah Veh concealed it from me and told me not. 28 Then she says, Asked I a son of my adoni? Said I not, Mislead me not? 29 Then he says to Gay Chazi, Gird your loins and take my staff in your hand and go your way: if you find a man, bless him not; and if a man bless you, answer him not: and set my staff on the face of the lad. 30 And the mother of the lad says, Yah Veh lives and your soul lives, I leave you not. - and he rises and goes after her. 31 And Gay Chazi passes on from their face and sets the staff on the face of the lad; and there is neither voice nor hearkening: and he turns back to meet him and tells him, saying, The lad wakens not. 32 And Eli Shua comes to the house, and behold, the lad had died and lies on his bed. 33
THE SON ENLIVENS
And he goes in and shuts the door on them both and prays to Yah Veh: 34 and he ascends and lies down on the child and sets his mouth on his mouth and his eyes on his eyes and his palms on his palms and prostrates himself on the child; and the flesh of the child heats: 35 and he returns and walks in the house once here and once there; and ascends and prostrates himself on him: and the lad sneezes seven times and the lad opens his eyes. 36 And he calls Gay Chazi and says, Call this Shunemiyth. - and he calls her. And she comes in to him, and he says, Lift your son. 37 - and she goes in and falls at his feet and prostrates herself to the earth and lifts her son and goes out. 38
ELI SHUA PURGES THE POTTAGE
And Eli Shua returns to Gilgal: and there is a famine in the land; and the sons of the prophets settle at his face: and he says to his lad, Set on the great caldron and stew pottage for the sons of the prophets. 39 And one goes to the field to gather herbs and finds a vine of the field; and gathers his coverall full of cucumbers of the field and comes and cleaves them into the caldron of pottage; for they know not: 40 and they pour for the men to eat. And so be it, they eat the pottage, and they cry out and say, O man of Elohim, death in the caldron! - and they cannot eat thereof. 41 And he says, Take flour. - and he casts it into the caldron. And he says, Pour out for the people to eat. - and there is no evil word in the caldron. 42 And a man comes from Baal Shalishah and brings the man of Elohim bread of the firstfruits, twenty bread of barley; and of the orchard, in the sack: and he says, Give to the people to eat. 43 And his minister says, What? Give this at the face of a hundred men? He says again, Give to the people to eat: for thus says Yah Veh, Eat, and some remains. 44 So he gives it at their face; and they eat and some remains, according to the word of Yah Veh.
