Lamsa(i)
I say to you that there is no prophet among those who are born of women, who is greater than John the Baptist; and yet even the least person in the kingdom of God is greater than he.
And all the people who heard it, even the publicans, justified themselves before God, for they were baptized with the baptism of John.
But the Pharisees and the scribes suppressed the will of God in themselves, because they were not baptized by him.
To whom, therefore, shall I liken the men of this generation? and to what are they like?
They are like boys who sit in the street, and call to their friends and say, We have sung to you but you did not dance; and we have wailed to you and you did not weep.
For John the Baptist came, neither eating bread nor drinking wine; and you say, He is insane.
The Son of man came, eating and drinking; and you say, Behold, a glutton and a winebibber, and a friend of publicans and sinners!
And yet wisdom is justified by all its works.
