HO TO THE SCRIBES
Ho to them engraving statutes of mischief, and inscribers incribing toil; 2 to pervert the poor from pleading their cause; and strip the judgment from the humble of my people - that widows be their spoil and to plunder the orphan! 3 And what work you in the day of visitation and in the devastation coming from afar? To whom flee you for help? And where leave you your honor? 4 Without me, they kneel under the bound, and they fall under the slaughtered. For all this he turns not away his wrath, and still spreads his hand. 5 Ho, Ashshuri, the scion of my wrath; and the rod in their hand, my rage: 6 I send him against a goyim of profaners and against the people of my wrath; I misvah him to take the spoil and to plunder the plunder; and to set them for trampling as the heap of the outways: 7 and he - he neither considers thus, nor fabricates his heart thus; but in his heart is to desolate and cut off goyim not a few. 8 - for he says, Are not my governors altogether sovereigns? 9 Is not Kalneh as Karchemish? Is not Hamath as Arpad? Is not Shomeron as Dammeseq? 10 As my hand found the sovereigndoms of the idol, and their sculptiles of Yeru Shalem and Shomeron; 11 Work I not as I worked to Shomeron and her idols? Work thus to Yeru Shalem and her idols? 12 And so be it, when Adonay clips his whole work on mount Siyon and on Yeru Shalem, I visit upon the fruit of the greatness of heart of the sovereign of Ashshur and the adornment of his haughty eyes. 13 For he said, By the force of my hand, I worked; and by my wisdom, I discerned: and I turned aside the borders of the people and plundered their treasures; and I brought down the settlers as the mighty: 14 and my hand found, as a nest, the valuables of the people: and as one gathers abandoned eggs, I gathered all the earth; and no one flapped the wing or gaped the mouth or chirped. 15 Boasts the ax over him who hews therewith? Or greatens the rasp over him who shakes it? - as a scion shakes them who lift it? Or as a rod lifts itself with no timber? 16 So Adonay - Adonay Sabaoth sends emaciation among his fatness; and under his honor he burns a burning as the burning of a fire: 17 and the light of Yisra El is for a fire, and his Holy One for a flame: and in one day it burns and consumes his thorns and his briers; 18 and finishes off the honor of his forest and of his orchard/Karmel - both soul and flesh: to become as when an ensignbearer melts: 19 and the survivors of the trees of his forest become a number, that even a lad can inscribe them. 20
THE SURVIVING ESCAPEES
And so be it, in that day, the survivors of Yisra El and the escapees of the house of Yaaqov add not to lean upon him who smote them; and lean upon Yah Veh, the Holy One of Yisra El, in truth: 21 the survivors return - the survivors of Yaaqov to the mighty El. 22 For though your people Yisra El become as the sand of the sea, their survivors return: the appointed consumption overflows with justness: 23 for Adonay Yah Veh Sabaoth works a final finish, appointed midst all the land. 24 So Adonay Yah Veh Sabaoth says thus: O my people settling in Siyon, awe not the Ashshuri: he smites you with a scion and lifts his rod against you after the way of Misrayim: 25 for yet a very little while, and I conclude the rage, and my wrath in their consumption. 26 And Yah Veh Sabaoth wakens a whip for him according to the striking of Midyan at the rock of Oreb: and as his rod is over the sea, and he lifts it as in the way of Misrayim. 27
THE OINTMENT DESPOILS THE YOKE
And so be it, in that day, he turns aside his burden from off your shoulder and his yoke from off your neck; and the yoke despoils at the face of the ointment. 28 He comes to Ayath; he passes to Migron; he musters his instruments at Michmash: 29 they pass over the passage: they take up their lodging at Geba; Ramah trembles; Gibah of Shaul flees. 30 Resound your voice, O daughter of heaps! Hearken, O Laish! Humble, O Anathoth! 31 Madmenah flees; the settlers of the way of the dugouts withdraw. 32 As yet he stands that day at Nob: the mount of Bath Siyon, the hill of Yeru Shalem shakes his hand. 33 Behold, Adonay Yah Veh Sabaoth lops the foliage with violence: and cuts the high ones of height and abases the lofty: 34 and he strikes the thickets of the forest with iron, and Lebanon falls by the mighty.
