²⁶ `And they are disobedient, and rebel against You, and cast Your law behind their back, and Your prophets they have slain, who testified against them, to bring them back unto You, and they do great despisings,

¹¹ And the sons of Israel do the evil thing in the eyes of Yahweh, and serve the Baalim, ¹² and forsake Yahweh, Elohim of their fathers, who brings them out from the land of Egypt, and go after other elohims (of the elohims of the peoples who [are] round about them), and bow themselves to them, and provoke Yahweh,

⁶ and take their daughters to them for wives, and their daughters have given to their sons, and they serve their elohims;" ⁷ and the sons of Israel do the evil thing in the eyes of Yahweh, and forget Yahweh their Elohim, and serve the Baalim and the shrines.

⁶ And the sons of Israel add to do the evil thing in the eyes of Yahweh, and serve the Baalim, and Ashtaroth, and the elohims of Aram, and the elohims of Zidon, and the elohims of Moab, and the elohims of the Bene-Ammon, and the elohims of the Philistines, and forsake Yahweh, and have not served Him;"

¹³ and you--you have forsaken Me, and serve other elohims, therefore I add not to save you. ¹⁴ Go and cry unto the elohims on which you have fixed; they--they save you in the time of your adversity.'

⁹ and you do evil above all who have been before you, and go, and make to you other elohims and molten images to provoke Me to anger, and Me you have cast behind your back.

⁴ and it comes to pass, in Jezebel's cutting off the prophets of Yahweh, that Obadiah takes a hundred prophets, and hides them, fifty men in a cave, and has sustained them with bread and water-.

¹³ `Has it not been declared to my lord that which I have done in Jezebel's slaying the prophets of Yahweh, that I hide of the prophets of Yahweh a hundred men, fifty by fifty in a cave, and sustained them with bread and water?

¹⁰ And he said, `I have been very zealous for Yahweh, Elohim of Hosts, for the sons of Israel have forsaken Your covenant--Your altars they have thrown down, and Your prophets they have slain by the sword, and I am left, I, by myself, and they seek my life--to take it..

¹¹ `Because that Manasseh king of Judah has done these abominations--he has done evil above all that the Amorites have done who [are] before him, and causes also Judah to sin by his idols;"

²⁰ and the Spirit of Elohim has clothed Zechariah son of Jehoiada the priest, and he stands over-against the people, and said to them, `Thus said Elohim, Why are you transgressing the commands of Yahweh, and prosper not? because you have forsaken Yahweh--He does forsake you.. ²¹ And they conspire against him, and stone him with stones by the command of the king, in the court of the house of Yahweh,

¹⁶ and they are mocking at the messengers of Elohim, and despising His words, and acting deceitfully with His prophets, till the going up of the fury of Yahweh against His people--till there is no healing.

¹⁸ `Also, when they have made to themselves a molten calf, and say, this [is] your elohim that brought you up out of Egypt, and do great despisings,

³⁰ `And You draw over them many years, and testify against them by Your Spirit, by the hand of Your prophets, and they have not given ear, and You do give them into the hand of peoples of the lands,

¹⁷ For you, you hate admonition, And you fling My words behind you."

⁵⁶ Yet they probed and defied Elohim, the Supreme, And they did not keep His testimonies." ⁵⁷ They were turned away and treacherous like their fathers; They were warped like a deceptive bow.

³⁴ They did not exterminate the peoples As Yahweh had commanded them. ³⁵ They mixed with the nations, And they learned their customs." ³⁶ They served their fetishes, And these came to be a trap for them." ³⁷ They sacrificed their sons And their daughters to demons; ³⁸ So they shed innocent blood, The blood of their sons and their daughters, Whom they sacrificed to the fetishes of Canaan, And the land was polluted with bloodshed." ³⁹ Thus they defiled themselves by their deeds, And they prostituted themselves by their actions." ⁴⁰ So the anger of Yahweh grew hot against His people, And He abhorred His allotment."

²⁰ `And also there has been a man prophesying in the name of Yahweh, Urijah son of Shemaiah, of Kirjath-Jearim, and he prophesies against this city, and against this land according to all the words of Jeremiah, ²¹ And the king Jehoiakim, and all his mighty ones, and all the heads, hear his words, and the king seeks to put him to death, and Urijah hears, and fears, and flees, and goes in to Egypt." ²² And the king Jehoiakim sends men to Egypt--Elnathan son of Achbor, and men with him unto Egypt--" ²³ And they bring out Urijah from Egypt, and bring him in unto the king Jehoiakim, and he smites him with a sword, and casts his corpse unto the graves of the sons of the people.'"

¹⁵ And you do trust in your beauty, And go a-whoring because of your renown, And do pour out your whoredoms On every passer by--to him it is." ¹⁶ And you do take of your garments, And do make to you spotted high-places, And do go a-whoring upon them, They are not coming in--nor shall it be!" ¹⁷ And you do take your beauteous vessels Of My gold and My silver that I gave to you, And do make to you images of a male, And do go a-whoring with them, ¹⁸ And do take the garments of your embroidery, And you do cover them, And My oil and My perfume you have set before them." ¹⁹ And My bread, that I gave to you, Fine flour, and oil, and honey, that I caused you to eat. You have even set it before them, For a sweet fragrance--thus it is, An affirmation of the Lord Yahweh." ²⁰ And you do take your sons and your daughters Whom you have born to Me, And do sacrifice them to them for food. Is it a little thing because of your whoredoms, ²¹ That you do slaughter My sons, And do give them up in causing them to pass over to them? ²² And with all your abominations and your whoredoms, You have not remembered the days of your youth, When you wast naked and bare, Trodden down in your blood you wast!" ²³ And it comes to pass, after all your wickedness, (Woe, woe, to you--an affirmation of the Lord Yahweh), ²⁴ That you do build to you an arch, And do make to you a high place in every broad place." ²⁵ At every head of the way you have built your high place, And you do make your beauty abominable, And do open wide your feet to every passer by, And do multiply your whoredoms, ²⁶ And do go a-whoring unto sons of Egypt, Your neighbors--great of appetite! And you do multiply your whoredoms, To provoke Me to anger." ²⁷ And lo, I have stretched out My hand against you, And I diminish your portion, And give you to the desire of those hating you, The daughters of the Philistines, Who are ashamed of your wicked way." ²⁸ And you go a-whoring unto sons of Asshur, Without your being satisfied, And you do go a-whoring with them, And also--you have not been satisfied." ²⁹ And you do multiply your whoredoms On the land of Canaan--toward Chaldea, And even with this you have not been satisfied." ³⁰ How weak [is] your heart, An affirmation of the Lord Yahweh, In your doing all these, The work of a domineering whorish woman." ³¹ In your building your arch at the head of every way, Your high place you have made in every broad place, And--have not been as a whore deriding a gift." ³² The wife who commits adultery--Under her husband--does receive strangers. ³³ To all whores they give a gift, And--you have given your gifts to all your lovers, And do bribe them to come in unto you, From round about--in your whoredoms." ³⁴ And the contrary is in you from women in your whoredoms, That after you none does go a-whoring; And in your giving a gift, And a gift has not been given to you; And you are become contrary." ³⁵ Therefore, O whore, hear a word of Yahweh, ³⁶ Thus said the Lord Yahweh:Because of your brass being poured forth, And your nakedness is revealed in your whoredoms near your lovers, And near all the idols of your abominations, And according to the blood of your sons, Whom you have given to them;" ³⁷ Therefore, lo, I am assembling all your lovers, To whom you have been sweet, And all whom you have loved, Besides all whom you have hated; And I have assembled them by you round about, And have revealed your nakedness to them, And they have seen all your nakedness." ³⁸ And I have judged you--judgments of adulteresses, And of women shedding blood, And have given you blood, fury, and jealousy." ³⁹ And I have given you into their hand, And they have thrown down your arch, And they have broken down your high places, And they have stript you of your garments, And they have taken your beauteous vessels, And they have left you naked and bare." ⁴⁰ And have caused an assembly to come up against you, And stoned you with stones, And thrust you through with their swords, ⁴¹ And burnt your houses with fire, And done in you judgments before the eyes of many women, And I have caused you to cease from going a-whoring, And also a gift you give no more." ⁴² And I have caused My fury against you to rest, And My jealousy has turned aside from you, And I have been quiet, and I am not angry any more." ⁴³ Because you have not remembered the days of your youth, And do give trouble to Me in all these, Lo, even I also your way at first gave up, An affirmation of the Lord Yahweh, And I did not this thought for all your abominations." ⁴⁴ Lo, every one using a simile, Does use a simile concerning you, saying:As the mother--her daughter!" ⁴⁵ Your mother's daughter you [are], Loathing her husband and her sons, And your sisters' sister you [are], Who loathed their husbands and their sons, Your mother [is] a Hittite, and your father an Amorite." ⁴⁶ And your elder sister [is] Samaria, she and her daughters, Who is dwelling at your left hand, And your younger sister, who is dwelling on your right hand, [is] Sodom and her daughters." ⁴⁷ And--in their ways you have not walked, And according to their abominations done, As a little thing it has been loathed, And you do more corruptly than they in all your ways." ⁴⁸ I live--an affirmation of the Lord Yahweh, Sodom your sister has not done--she and her daughters--As you have done--you and your daughters." ⁴⁹ Lo, this has been the iniquity of Sodom your sister, Arrogancy, fulness of bread, and quiet ease, Have been to her and to her daughters, And the hand of the afflicted and needy She has not strengthened." ⁵⁰ And they are haughty and do abomination before Me, And I turn them aside when I have seen." ⁵¹ As to Samaria, as the half of your sins--she has not sinned, And you do multiply your abominations more than they, And do justify your sisters by all your abominations that you have done." ⁵² You also--bear your shame, That you have adjudged to your sisters, Because of your sins that you have done more abominably than they, They are more righteous than you, And you, also, be ashamed and bear your shame, In your justifying your sisters." ⁵³ And I have turned back [to] their captivity, The captivity of Sodom and her daughters, And the captivity of Samaria and her daughters, And the captivity of your captives in their midst, ⁵⁴ So that you do bear your shame, And have been ashamed of all that you have done, In your comforting them." ⁵⁵ And your sisters, Sodom and her daughters, Do turn back to their former state, And Samaria and her daughters Do turn back to their former state, And you and your daughters do turn back to your former state." ⁵⁶ And your sister Sodom has not been for a report in your mouth, In the day of your arrogancy, ⁵⁷ Before your wickedness is revealed, As [at] the time of the reproach of the daughters of Aram, And of all her neighbors, the daughters of the Philistines, Who are despising you round about." ⁵⁸ Your devices and your abominations, You have borne them, an affirmation of Yahweh." ⁵⁹ For thus said the Lord Yahweh:I have dealt with you as you have done, In that you have despised an oath--to break covenant." ⁶⁰ And I--I have remembered My covenant with you, In the days of your youth, And I have established for you a covenant eonian." ⁶¹ And you have remembered your ways, And you have been ashamed, In your receiving your sisters--Your elder with your younger, And I have given them to you for daughters, And not by your covenant." ⁶² And I--I have established My covenant with you, And you have known that I [am] Yahweh." ⁶³ So that you do remember, And you have been ashamed, And there is not to you any more an opening of the mouth because of your shame, In My receiving atonement for you, For all that you have done, An affirmation of the Lord Yahweh!'"

²¹ And--the sons rebel against Me, In My statutes they have not walked, And My judgments they have not observed--to do them, Which the man who does--lives by them. My sabbaths they have polluted, And I say to pour out My fury upon them, To complete Mine anger against them in the wilderness."

²⁵ A conspiracy of its prophets [is] in its midst, as a roaring lion tearing prey; The soul they have devoured, Wealth and glory they have taken, Its widows have multiplied in its midst." ²⁶ Its priests have wronged My law, And they pollute My holy things, Between holy and common they have not made separation, And between the unclean and the clean they have not made known, And from my sabbaths they have hidden their eyes, And I am pierced in their midst." ²⁷ Its princes in its midst [are] as wolves, Tearing prey, to shed blood, to destroy souls, For the sake of gaining dishonest gain." ²⁸ And its prophets have daubed for them with chalk, Seeing a vain thing, and divining for them a lie, Saying, `Thus said the Lord Yahweh:' And Yahweh has not spoken." ²⁹ The people of the land have used oppression, And have taken plunder violently away, And humble and needy have oppressed, And the sojourner oppressed--without judgment." ³⁰ And I seek of them a man making a fence, And standing in the breach before Me, In behalf of the land--not to destroy it, And I have not found." ³¹ And I pour out on them mine indignation, By fire of My wrath I have consumed them, Their way on their own head I have put, An affirmation of the Lord Yahweh!'"

⁴ And their names [are] Aholah the elder, And Aholibah her sister, And they are Mine, and bear sons and daughters. As to their names--Samaria [is] Aholah, And Jerusalem [is] Aholibah." ⁵ And go a-whoring does Aholah under Me, And she dotes on her lovers, On the neighboring Assyrians, ⁶ Clothed with blue--governors and prefects, Desirable young men all of them, Horsemen, riding on horses, ⁷ And she gives her whoredoms on them, The choice of the sons of Asshur, All of them--even all on whom she doted, By all their idols she has been defiled." ⁸ And her whoredoms out of Egypt she has not forsaken, For with her they lay in her youth, And they dealt with the loves of her virginity, And they pour out their whoredoms on her." ⁹ Therefore I have given her into the hand of her lovers, Into the hand of sons of Asshur on whom she doted." ¹⁰ They have uncovered her nakedness, Her sons and her daughters they have taken, And her by sword they have slain, And she is a name for women, And judgments they have done with her." ¹¹ And see does her sister Aholibah, And she makes her doting love more corrupt than she, And her whoredoms than the whoredoms of her sister." ¹² On sons of Asshur she has doted, Governors and prefects, Neighboring ones--clothed in perfection, Horsemen, riding on horses, Desirable young men all of them." ¹³ And I see that she has been defiled, One way [is] to them both." ¹⁴ And she does add unto her whoredoms, And she sees graved men on the wall, Pictures of Chaldeans, graved with red lead, ¹⁵ Girded with a girdle on their loins, Dyed attire spread out on their heads, The appearance of rulers--all of them, The likeness of sons of Babylon, Chaldea is the land of their birth." ¹⁶ And she dotes on them at the sight of her eyes, And sends messengers to them, to Chaldea." ¹⁷ And come in unto her do sons of Babylon, To the bed of loves, And they defile her with their whoredoms, And she is defiled with them, And her soul is alienated from them." ¹⁸ And she reveals her whoredoms, And she reveals her nakedness, And alienated is My soul from off her, As alienated was My soul from off her sister." ¹⁹ And she multiplies her whoredoms, To remember the days of her youth, When she went a-whoring in the land of Egypt." ²⁰ And she dotes on their paramours, Whose flesh [is] the flesh of asses, And the issue of horses--their issue." ²¹ You look after the wickedness of your youth, In dealing out of Egypt your loves, For the sake of the breasts of your youth." ²² Therefore, O Aholibah, thus said the Lord Yahweh:Lo, I am stirring up your lovers against you, From whom your soul has been alienated, And have brought them in against you from round about." ²³ Sons of Babylon, and of all Chaldea, Pekod, and Shoa, and Koa, All the sons of Asshur with them, Desirable young men, governors and prefects, All of them--rulers and proclaimed ones, Riding on horses, all of them." ²⁴ And they have come in against you, With arms, rider, and wheel, And with an assembly of peoples; Target, and shield, and helmet, They do set against you round about, And I have set before them judgment, They have judged you in their Judgments." ²⁵ And I have set My jealousy against you, And they have dealt with you in fury, Your nose and your ears they turn aside, And your posterity by sword falls, They, your sons and your daughters do take away, And your posterity is devoured by fire." ²⁶ And they have stripped you of your garments, And have taken your beauteous jewels." ²⁷ And I have caused your wickedness to cease from you, And your whoredoms out of the land of Egypt, And you lift not up your eyes unto them, And Egypt you do not remember again." ²⁸ For thus said the Lord Yahweh:Lo, I am giving you into a hand that you have hated, Into a hand from which you wast alienated." ²⁹ And they have dealt with you in hatred, And they have taken all your labor, And they have left you naked and bare, And revealed has been the nakedness of your whoredoms, And the wickedness of your whoredoms." ³⁰ To do these things to you, In your going a-whoring after nations, Because you have been defiled with their idols, ³¹ In the way of your sister you have walked, And I have given her cup into your hand." ³² Thus said the Lord Yahweh:The cup of your sister you do drink, The deep and the wide one, (You are for laughter and for scorn,) Abundant to contain." ³³ With drunkenness and sorrow you are filled, A cup of astonishment and desolation, The cup of your sister Samaria." ³⁴ And you have drunk it, and have drained [it], And its earthen ware you do gnaw, And your own breasts you pluck off, For I have spoken, An affirmation of the Lord Yahweh, ³⁵ Therefore, thus said the Lord Yahweh:Because you have forgotten Me, And you do cast Me behind your back, Even you also bear your wickedness and your whoredoms.'" ³⁶ And Yahweh said unto me, `Son of man, Do you judge Aholah and Aholibah? Declare then to them their abominations." ³⁷ For they have committed adultery, And blood [is] in their hands, With their idols they committed adultery, And also their sons whom they bore to Me, They caused to pass over to them for food." ³⁸ Again, this they have done to Me, They defiled My sanctuary in that day, And My sabbaths they have polluted." ³⁹ And in their slaughtering their sons to their idols They also come in unto My sanctuary in that day to pollute it, And lo, thus they have done in the midst of My house, ⁴⁰ And also that they send to men coming from afar, Unto whom a messenger is sent, And lo, they have come in for whom you have washed, Painted your eyes, and put on adornment." ⁴¹ And you have sat on a couch of honor, And a table arrayed before it, And My perfume and My oil placed on it." ⁴² And the voice of a multitude at ease [is] with her, And unto men of the common people are brought in Sabeans from the wilderness, And they put bracelets on their hands, And a beauteous crown on their heads." ⁴³ And I say of the worn-out one in adulteries, Now they commit her whoredoms--she also!" ⁴⁴ And they come in unto her, As the coming in unto a whorish woman, So they have come in unto Aholah, And unto Aholibah--the wicked women." ⁴⁵ As to righteous men, they judge them with the judgment of adulteresses, And the judgment of women shedding blood, For they [are] adulteresses, And blood [is] in their hands." ⁴⁶ For thus said the Lord Yahweh:Bring up against them an assembly, And give them to trembling and to spoiling." ⁴⁷ And they have cast at them the stone of the assembly, And cut them with their swords, Their sons and their daughters they do slay, And their houses with fire they burn." ⁴⁸ And I have caused wickedness to cease from the land, And instructed have been all the women, And they do not according to your wickedness." ⁴⁹ And they have put your wickedness on you, And the sins of your idols you bear, And you have known that I [am] the Lord Yahweh!"

³ And he has seen the sword coming against the land, And has blown with a trumpet, and has warned the people, ⁴ And the hearer has heard the voice of the trumpet, and he has not taken warning, And come in does the sword, and takes him away, His blood is on his head." ⁵ The voice of the trumpet he heard, And he has not taken warning, his blood is on him, And he who took warning his soul has delivered."

³⁵ And the farmers, taking his slaves, indeed, lash one, yet kill one, yet pelt one with stones."

³⁴ Therefore, lo! I am dispatching to you prophets and wise men and scribes. Of them, some you will be killing and crucifying, and of them, some you will be scourging in your synagogues and persecuting from city to city, ³⁵ so that on you should be coming all the just blood shed on the earth, from the blood of just Abel until the blood of Zechariah, son of Berechiah, whom you murder between the temple and the altar." ³⁶ Verily, I am saying to you: All these things will be arriving on this generation." ³⁷ Jerusalem! Jerusalem! who art killing the prophets and pelting with stones those who have been dispatched to her! How many times do I want to assemble your children in the manner a hen is assembling her brood under her wings-and you will not!"

⁵² Which of the prophets do not your fathers persecute? And they kill those who announce before concerning the coming of the Just One, of Whom now you became the traitors and murderers -"
