¹⁶ Καὶ (And) οὗτοί (these) εἰσιν (are) ὁμοίως (likewise) οἱ (those) ἐπὶ (upon) τὰ (the) πετρώδη (rocky places) σπειρόμενοι (sown), οἳ (who), ὅταν (when) ἀκούσωσιν (they hear) τὸν (the) λόγον (word), εὐθὺς (immediately) μετὰ (with) χαρᾶς (joy) λαμβάνουσιν (receive) αὐτόν (it), ¹⁷ καὶ (and) οὐκ (not) ἔχουσιν (they have) ῥίζαν (root) ἐν (in) ἑαυτοῖς (themselves), ἀλλὰ (but) πρόσκαιροί (temporary) εἰσιν (are); εἶτα (then) γενομένης (having arisen) θλίψεως (tribulation) ἢ (or) διωγμοῦ (persecution) διὰ (on account of) τὸν (the) λόγον (word), εὐθὺς (immediately) σκανδαλίζονται (they fall away). ¹⁸ Καὶ (And) ἄλλοι (these) εἰσὶν (are) οἱ (those) εἰς (among) τὰς (the) ἀκάνθας (thorns) σπειρόμενοι (sown). οὗτοί (These) εἰσιν (are) οἱ (those), τὸν (the) λόγον (word) ἀκούσαντες (having heard), ¹⁹ καὶ (and) αἱ (the) μέριμναι (cares) τοῦ (-) αἰῶνος (of this age), καὶ (and) ἡ (the) ἀπάτη (deceit) τοῦ (of the) πλούτου (riches), καὶ (and) αἱ (-) περὶ (of) τὰ (the) λοιπὰ (other things) ἐπιθυμίαι (desires) εἰσπορευόμεναι (entering in), συμπνίγουσιν (choke) τὸν (the) λόγον (word), καὶ (and) ἄκαρπος (unfruitful) γίνεται (it becomes). ²⁰ Καὶ (And) ἐκεῖνοί (these) εἰσιν (are) οἱ (those) ἐπὶ (upon) τὴν (the) γῆν (soil) τὴν (-) καλὴν (good) σπαρέντες (having been sown); οἵτινες (such as) ἀκούουσιν (hear) τὸν (the) λόγον (word) καὶ (and) παραδέχονται (receive it), καὶ (and) καρποφοροῦσιν (bring forth fruit), ἓν (one) τριάκοντα (thirtyfold), καὶ (and) ἓν (one) ἑξήκοντα (sixty), καὶ (and) ἓν (one) ἑκατόν (a hundred).”

⁴⁸ ὁ (The one) ἀθετῶν (rejecting) ἐμὲ (Me) καὶ (and) μὴ (not) λαμβάνων (receiving) τὰ (the) ῥήματά (words) μου (of Me) ἔχει (has) τὸν (one) κρίνοντα (judging) αὐτόν (him): ὁ (The) λόγος (word) ὃν (which) ἐλάλησα (I spoke), ἐκεῖνος (that) κρινεῖ (will judge) αὐτὸν (him) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) ἐσχάτῃ (last) ἡμέρᾳ (day).

⁴¹ οἱ (Those) μὲν (indeed) οὖν (therefore) ἀποδεξάμενοι (having received) τὸν (the) λόγον (word) αὐτοῦ (of him) ἐβαπτίσθησαν (were baptized); καὶ (and) προσετέθησαν (were added) ἐν (on) τῇ (the) ἡμέρᾳ (day) ἐκείνῃ (that), ψυχαὶ (souls) ὡσεὶ (about) τρισχίλιαι (three thousand).

¹ Ἤκουσαν (Heard) δὲ (now) οἱ (the) ἀπόστολοι (apostles) καὶ (and) οἱ (the) ἀδελφοὶ (brothers) οἱ (-) ὄντες (being) κατὰ (in) τὴν (-) Ἰουδαίαν (Judea) ὅτι (that) καὶ (also) τὰ (the) ἔθνη (Gentiles) ἐδέξαντο (had received) τὸν (the) λόγον (word) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God).

⁴ Διελέγετο (He was reasoning) δὲ (now) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) συναγωγῇ (synagogue) κατὰ (on) πᾶν (every) σάββατον (Sabbath), ἔπειθέν (persuading) τε (both) Ἰουδαίους (Jews) καὶ (and) Ἕλληνας (Greeks). ⁵ Ὡς (When) δὲ (now) κατῆλθον (came down) ἀπὸ (from) τῆς (-) Μακεδονίας (Macedonia) ὅ (-) τε (both) Σιλᾶς (Silas) καὶ (and) ὁ (-) Τιμόθεος (Timothy), συνείχετο (was occupied) τῷ (with the) λόγῳ (word) ὁ (-) Παῦλος (Paul), διαμαρτυρόμενος (earnestly testifying) τοῖς (to the) Ἰουδαίοις (Jews) εἶναι (to be) τὸν (the) Χριστὸν (Christ) Ἰησοῦν (Jesus).

² δι’ (through) οὗ (whom) καὶ (also) τὴν (-) προσαγωγὴν (access) ἐσχήκαμεν (we have) τῇ (by the) πίστει (faith) εἰς (into) τὴν (the) χάριν (grace) ταύτην (this) ἐν (in) ᾗ (which) ἑστήκαμεν (we stand); καὶ (and) καυχώμεθα (we boast) ἐπ’ (in) ἐλπίδι (hope) τῆς (of the) δόξης (glory) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God).

²³ ἡμεῖς (we) δὲ (however) κηρύσσομεν (preach) Χριστὸν (Christ) ἐσταυρωμένον (having been crucified), Ἰουδαίοις (to the Jewish) μὲν (indeed) σκάνδαλον (a stumbling block), ἔθνεσιν (to Gentiles) δὲ (now) μωρίαν (foolishness); ²⁴ αὐτοῖς (to them) δὲ (however) τοῖς (the) κλητοῖς (called), Ἰουδαίοις (Jews) τε (both) καὶ (and) Ἕλλησιν (Greeks), Χριστὸν (Christ) Θεοῦ (of God) δύναμιν (the power) καὶ (and) Θεοῦ (of God) σοφίαν (the wisdom).

² οὐ (Nothing) γὰρ (for) ἔκρινά (I decided) τι (anything) εἰδέναι (to know) ἐν (among) ὑμῖν (you), εἰ (if) μὴ (not) Ἰησοῦν (Jesus) Χριστὸν (Christ), καὶ (and) τοῦτον (Him) ἐσταυρωμένον (having been crucified). ³ κἀγὼ (And I), ἐν (in) ἀσθενείᾳ (weakness), καὶ (and) ἐν (in) φόβῳ (fear), καὶ (and) ἐν (in) τρόμῳ (trembling) πολλῷ (much), ἐγενόμην (was) πρὸς (with) ὑμᾶς (you). ⁴ καὶ (And) ὁ (the) λόγος (message) μου (of me) καὶ (and) τὸ (the) κήρυγμά (preaching) μου (of me) οὐκ (were not) ἐν (in) πειθοῖς (persuasive) σοφίας (of wisdom) λόγοις (words), ἀλλ’ (but) ἐν (in) ἀποδείξει (demonstration) Πνεύματος (of the Spirit) καὶ (and) δυνάμεως (of power), ⁵ ἵνα (so that) ἡ (the) πίστις (faith) ὑμῶν (of you) μὴ (not) ᾖ (might be) ἐν (in) σοφίᾳ (wisdom) ἀνθρώπων (of men), ἀλλ’ (but) ἐν (in) δυνάμει (power) Θεοῦ (of God). ⁶ Σοφίαν (Wisdom) δὲ (however) λαλοῦμεν (we speak) ἐν (among) τοῖς (the) τελείοις (mature); σοφίαν (wisdom) δὲ (however), οὐ (not) τοῦ (the) αἰῶνος (age) τούτου (of this), οὐδὲ (nor) τῶν (of the) ἀρχόντων (rulers) τοῦ (the) αἰῶνος (age) τούτου (of this), τῶν (who) καταργουμένων (are coming to naught). ⁷ ἀλλὰ (But) λαλοῦμεν (we speak) Θεοῦ (of God) σοφίαν (wisdom) ἐν (in) μυστηρίῳ (a mystery), τὴν (-) ἀποκεκρυμμένην (having been hidden), ἣν (which) προώρισεν (foreordained) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) πρὸ (before) τῶν (the) αἰώνων (ages) εἰς (for) δόξαν (glory) ἡμῶν (of us),

⁶ ἐγὼ (I) ἐφύτευσα (planted), Ἀπολλῶς (Apollos) ἐπότισεν (watered), ἀλλὰ (but) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) ηὔξανεν (kept it growing).

³ Παρέδωκα (I delivered) γὰρ (for) ὑμῖν (to you) ἐν (in) πρώτοις (the foremost) ὃ (what) καὶ (also) παρέλαβον (I received), ὅτι (that) Χριστὸς (Christ) ἀπέθανεν (died) ὑπὲρ (for) τῶν (the) ἁμαρτιῶν (sins) ἡμῶν (of us) κατὰ (according to) τὰς (the) γραφάς (Scriptures), ⁴ καὶ (and) ὅτι (that) ἐτάφη (He was buried), καὶ (and) ὅτι (that) ἐγήγερται (He was raised) τῇ (the) ἡμέρᾳ (day) τῇ (the) τρίτῃ (third) κατὰ (according to) τὰς (the) γραφάς (Scriptures), ⁵ καὶ (and) ὅτι (that) ὤφθη (He appeared) Κηφᾷ (to Cephas), εἶτα (then) τοῖς (to the) δώδεκα (Twelve). ⁶ ἔπειτα (Thereafter) ὤφθη (He appeared) ἐπάνω (to more than) πεντακοσίοις (five hundred) ἀδελφοῖς (brothers) ἐφάπαξ (at once), ἐξ (of) ὧν (whom) οἱ (the) πλείονες (greater part) μένουσιν (remain) ἕως (until) ἄρτι (now); τινὲς (some) δὲ (however) ἐκοιμήθησαν (have fallen asleep). ⁷ ἔπειτα (Then) ὤφθη (He appeared) Ἰακώβῳ (to James), εἶτα (then) τοῖς (to the) ἀποστόλοις (apostles) πᾶσιν (all). ⁸ ἔσχατον (Last) δὲ (then) πάντων (of all), ὡσπερεὶ (as) τῷ (the) ἐκτρώματι (untimely birth), ὤφθη (He appeared) κἀμοί (also to me). ⁹ Ἐγὼ (I) γάρ (for) εἰμι (am) ὁ (the) ἐλάχιστος (least) τῶν (of the) ἀποστόλων (apostles), ὃς (who) οὐκ (not) εἰμὶ (am) ἱκανὸς (fit) καλεῖσθαι (to be called) ἀπόστολος (an apostle), διότι (because) ἐδίωξα (I persecuted) τὴν (the) ἐκκλησίαν (church) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God). ¹⁰ χάριτι (By the grace) δὲ (however) Θεοῦ (of God), εἰμι (I am) ὅ (what) εἰμι (I am), καὶ (and) ἡ (the) χάρις (grace) αὐτοῦ (of Him) ἡ (-) εἰς (toward) ἐμὲ (me) οὐ (not) κενὴ (void) ἐγενήθη (has been). ἀλλὰ (Rather), περισσότερον (more abundantly) αὐτῶν (than them) πάντων (all) ἐκοπίασα (I toiled), οὐκ (not) ἐγὼ (I) δὲ (however), ἀλλὰ (but) ἡ (the) χάρις (grace) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) ‹ἡ› (that was) σὺν (with) ἐμοί (me). ¹¹ εἴτε (Whether) οὖν (therefore) ἐγὼ (I) εἴτε (or) ἐκεῖνοι (they), οὕτως (thus) κηρύσσομεν (we preach), καὶ (and) οὕτως (thus) ἐπιστεύσατε (you believed).

²⁴ οὐχ (Not) ὅτι (that) κυριεύομεν (we lord it over) ὑμῶν (your) τῆς (-) πίστεως (faith), ἀλλὰ (but) συνεργοί (fellow workers) ἐσμεν (are) τῆς (of the) χαρᾶς (joy) ὑμῶν (with you); τῇ (in the) γὰρ (for) πίστει (faith) ἑστήκατε (you stand firm).

⁶ Θαυμάζω (I am astonished) ὅτι (that) οὕτως (so) ταχέως (quickly) μετατίθεσθε (you are deserting) ἀπὸ (from) τοῦ (the One) καλέσαντος (having called) ὑμᾶς (you) ἐν (in) χάριτι (the grace) Χριστοῦ (of Christ), εἰς (to) ἕτερον (a different) εὐαγγέλιον (gospel), ⁷ ὃ (which) οὐκ (not) ἔστιν (is) ἄλλο (another); εἰ (if) μή (not) τινές (some) εἰσιν (there are) οἱ (who) ταράσσοντες (are troubling) ὑμᾶς (you), καὶ (and) θέλοντες (are desiring) μεταστρέψαι (to pervert) τὸ (the) εὐαγγέλιον (gospel) τοῦ (-) Χριστοῦ (of Christ). ⁸ Ἀλλὰ (But) καὶ (even) ἐὰν (if) ἡμεῖς (we) ἢ (or) ἄγγελος (an angel) ἐξ (out of) οὐρανοῦ (heaven) εὐαγγελίζηται* (should preach a gospel) ὑμῖν (to you) παρ’ (contrary to) ὃ (what) εὐηγγελισάμεθα (we proclaimed) ὑμῖν (to you), ἀνάθεμα (accursed) ἔστω (let him be)! ⁹ ὡς (As) προειρήκαμεν (we have said before), καὶ (even) ἄρτι (now) πάλιν (again) λέγω (I say), εἴ (if) τις (anyone) ὑμᾶς (to you) εὐαγγελίζεται (is preaching a gospel) παρ’ (contrary to) ὃ (what) παρελάβετε (you received), ἀνάθεμα (accursed) ἔστω (let him be)! ¹⁰ Ἄρτι (Presently) γὰρ (for) ἀνθρώπους (of men) πείθω (do I seek approval), ἢ (or) τὸν (-) Θεόν (God)? ἢ (Or) ζητῶ (do I seek) ἀνθρώποις (men) ἀρέσκειν (to please)? εἰ (For if) ἔτι (yet) ἀνθρώποις (men) ἤρεσκον (I were pleasing), Χριστοῦ (of Christ) δοῦλος (a servant) οὐκ (not) ἂν (-) ἤμην (I would be). ¹¹ γνωρίζω (I make known) γὰρ (for) ὑμῖν (to you), ἀδελφοί (brothers), τὸ (the) εὐαγγέλιον (gospel) τὸ (-) εὐαγγελισθὲν (having been preached) ὑπ’ (by) ἐμοῦ (me), ὅτι (that) οὐκ (not) ἔστιν (it is) κατὰ (according to) ἄνθρωπον (man). ¹² οὐδὲ (Neither) γὰρ (for) ἐγὼ (I) παρὰ (from) ἀνθρώπου (man) παρέλαβον (received) αὐτό (it), οὔτε (nor) ἐδιδάχθην (was I taught it), ἀλλὰ (but) δι’ (by) ἀποκαλύψεως (a revelation) Ἰησοῦ (of Jesus) Χριστοῦ (Christ).

⁶ Καὶ (And) ὑμεῖς (you) μιμηταὶ (imitators) ἡμῶν (of us) ἐγενήθητε (became), καὶ (and) τοῦ (of the) Κυρίου (Lord), δεξάμενοι (having received) τὸν (the) λόγον (word) ἐν (in) θλίψει (tribulation) πολλῇ (much), μετὰ (with) χαρᾶς (the joy) Πνεύματος (of the Spirit) Ἁγίου (Holy),

¹³ Καὶ (And) διὰ (because of) τοῦτο (this) καὶ (also), ἡμεῖς (we) εὐχαριστοῦμεν (give thanks) τῷ (-) Θεῷ (to God) ἀδιαλείπτως (unceasingly) ὅτι (that), παραλαβόντες (having received) λόγον (the word) ἀκοῆς (by your hearing) παρ’ (from) ἡμῶν (us) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), ἐδέξασθε (you accepted) οὐ (not) λόγον (the word) ἀνθρώπων (of men), ἀλλὰ (but) καθὼς (even as) ἀληθῶς (truly) ἐστὶν (it is), λόγον (the word) Θεοῦ (of God), ὃς (which) καὶ (also) ἐνεργεῖται (works) ἐν (in) ὑμῖν (you) τοῖς (who) πιστεύουσιν (believe).

¹ Λοιπὸν (Finally) οὖν (then), ἀδελφοί (brothers), ἐρωτῶμεν (we implore) ὑμᾶς (you) καὶ (and) παρακαλοῦμεν (exhort) ἐν (in) Κυρίῳ (the Lord) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus) ἵνα (that), καθὼς (just as) παρελάβετε (you have received) παρ’ (from) ἡμῶν (us) τὸ (-) πῶς (in what manner) δεῖ (it behooves) ὑμᾶς (you) περιπατεῖν (to walk) καὶ (and) ἀρέσκειν (to please) Θεῷ (God), καθὼς (just as) καὶ (even) περιπατεῖτε (you walk now), ἵνα (so) περισσεύητε (you should abound) μᾶλλον (more).

⁶ Παραγγέλλομεν (We command) δὲ (now) ὑμῖν (you), ἀδελφοί (brothers), ἐν (in) ὀνόματι (the name) τοῦ (of the) Κυρίου (Lord) ‹ἡμῶν› (of us) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus) Χριστοῦ (Christ), στέλλεσθαι (are to withdraw) ὑμᾶς (you) ἀπὸ (from) παντὸς (every) ἀδελφοῦ (brother) ἀτάκτως (idly) περιπατοῦντος (walking) καὶ (and) μὴ (not) κατὰ (according to) τὴν (the) παράδοσιν (tradition) ἣν (that) παρελάβοσαν* (you received) παρ’ (from) ἡμῶν (us).

¹² Διὰ (Through) Σιλουανοῦ (Silvanus), ὑμῖν (to you) τοῦ (the) πιστοῦ (faithful) ἀδελφοῦ (brother) ὡς (as) λογίζομαι (I regard him), δι’ (through) ὀλίγων (few words) ἔγραψα (I have written), παρακαλῶν (exhorting) καὶ (and) ἐπιμαρτυρῶν (testifying) ταύτην (this) εἶναι (to be) ἀληθῆ (the true) χάριν (grace) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), εἰς (in) ἣν (which) στῆτε (you stand).
