² δι’ (by) οὗ (which) καὶ (also) σῴζεσθε (you are being saved), τίνι (to the) λόγῳ (word) εὐηγγελισάμην (I proclaimed) ὑμῖν (to you), εἰ (if) κατέχετε (you hold fast); ἐκτὸς (unless) εἰ (if) μὴ (not), εἰκῇ (in vain) ἐπιστεύσατε (you have believed).

¹³ Οἱ (Those) δὲ (now) ἐπὶ (upon) τῆς (the) πέτρας (rock), οἳ (those who) ὅταν (when) ἀκούσωσιν (they hear), μετὰ (with) χαρᾶς (joy) δέχονται (receive) τὸν (the) λόγον (word), καὶ (and) οὗτοι (these) ῥίζαν (a root) οὐκ (not) ἔχουσιν (have), οἳ (who) πρὸς (for) καιρὸν (a time) πιστεύουσιν (believe), καὶ (and) ἐν (in) καιρῷ (time) πειρασμοῦ (of testing) ἀφίστανται (fall away).

³¹ Ἔλεγεν (Was saying) οὖν (therefore) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) πρὸς (to) τοὺς (the) πεπιστευκότας (having believed) αὐτῷ (in Him) Ἰουδαίους (Jews), “Ἐὰν (If) ὑμεῖς (you) μείνητε (abide) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) λόγῳ (word) τῷ (-) ἐμῷ (My), ἀληθῶς (truly) μαθηταί (disciples) μού (of Me) ἐστε (you are). ³² καὶ (And) γνώσεσθε (you will know) τὴν (the) ἀλήθειαν (truth), καὶ (and) ἡ (the) ἀλήθεια (truth) ἐλευθερώσει (will set free) ὑμᾶς (you).”

⁴⁷ αἰνοῦντες (praising) τὸν (-) Θεὸν (God) καὶ (and) ἔχοντες (having) χάριν (favor) πρὸς (with) ὅλον (all) τὸν (the) λαόν (people). ὁ (-) δὲ (And) Κύριος (the Lord) προσετίθει (kept adding) τοὺς (those who) σῳζομένους (were being saved) καθ’ (every) ἡμέραν (day) ἐπὶ (to) τὸ (their) αὐτό (number).

¹³ ὁ (-) δὲ (And) Σίμων (Simon) καὶ (also) αὐτὸς (himself) ἐπίστευσεν (believed), καὶ (and) βαπτισθεὶς (having been baptized), ἦν (was) προσκαρτερῶν (steadfastly continuing) τῷ (-) Φιλίππῳ (with Philip). θεωρῶν (Beholding) τε (then) σημεῖα (the signs) καὶ (and) δυνάμεις (miracles) μεγάλας (great) γινομένας (being performed), ἐξίστατο (he was amazed).

¹⁶ Οὐ (Not) γὰρ (for) ἐπαισχύνομαι (I am ashamed of) τὸ (the) εὐαγγέλιον (gospel), δύναμις (the power) γὰρ (for) Θεοῦ (of God) ἐστιν (it is), εἰς (unto) σωτηρίαν (salvation) παντὶ (to everyone) τῷ (-) πιστεύοντι (believing)— Ἰουδαίῳ (to Jewish) τε (both) πρῶτον (first) καὶ (and) Ἕλληνι (to Greek).

²² ἴδε (Behold) οὖν (therefore) χρηστότητα (the kindness) καὶ (and) ἀποτομίαν (severity) Θεοῦ (of God); ἐπὶ (upon) μὲν (indeed) τοὺς (those) πεσόντας (having fallen), ἀποτομία (severity); ἐπὶ (toward) δὲ (however) σὲ (you), χρηστότης (kindness) Θεοῦ (of God), ἐὰν (if) ἐπιμένῃς (you continue in) τῇ (the) χρηστότητι (kindness); ἐπεὶ (otherwise) καὶ (also) σὺ (you) ἐκκοπήσῃ (will be cut off).

¹⁸ Ὁ (The) λόγος (message) γὰρ (for) ὁ (-) τοῦ (of the) σταυροῦ (cross), τοῖς (to those) μὲν (indeed) ἀπολλυμένοις (perishing) μωρία (foolishness) ἐστίν (is); τοῖς (those) δὲ (however) σῳζομένοις (being saved), ἡμῖν (to us), δύναμις (power) Θεοῦ (of God) ἐστιν (it is).

²¹ ἐπειδὴ (Since) γὰρ (for) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) σοφίᾳ (wisdom) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), οὐκ (not) ἔγνω (knew) ὁ (the) κόσμος (world) διὰ (through) τῆς (the) σοφίας (wisdom) τὸν (-) Θεόν (God), εὐδόκησεν (was pleased) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God), διὰ (through) τῆς (the) μωρίας (foolishness) τοῦ (of the) κηρύγματος (proclamation), σῶσαι (to save) τοὺς (those) πιστεύοντας (believing).

¹¹ εἴτε (Whether) οὖν (therefore) ἐγὼ (I) εἴτε (or) ἐκεῖνοι (they), οὕτως (thus) κηρύσσομεν (we preach), καὶ (and) οὕτως (thus) ἐπιστεύσατε (you believed). ¹² Εἰ (If) δὲ (now) Χριστὸς (Christ) κηρύσσεται (is preached) ὅτι (that) ἐκ (out from) νεκρῶν (the dead) ἐγήγερται (He has been raised), πῶς (how) λέγουσιν (say) ἐν (among) ὑμῖν (you) τινες (some) ὅτι (that) ἀνάστασις (a resurrection) νεκρῶν (of the dead) οὐκ (not) ἔστιν (there is)?

¹⁴ εἰ (if) δὲ (then) Χριστὸς (Christ) οὐκ (not) ἐγήγερται (has been raised), κενὸν (is void) ἄρα (then) [καὶ] (also) τὸ (the) κήρυγμα (preaching) ἡμῶν (of us), κενὴ (void) καὶ (also) ἡ (the) πίστις (faith) ὑμῶν (of you).

¹⁵ ὅτι (For) Χριστοῦ (of Christ) εὐωδία (a sweet perfume) ἐσμὲν (we are) τῷ (-) Θεῷ (to God) ἐν (in) τοῖς (those) σωζομένοις (being saved) καὶ (and) ἐν (in) τοῖς (those) ἀπολλυμένοις (perishing);

¹ Συνεργοῦντες (Working together) δὲ (now) καὶ (also) παρακαλοῦμεν (we exhort) μὴ (not) εἰς (in) κενὸν (vain) τὴν (the) χάριν (grace) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) δέξασθαι (to receive) ὑμᾶς (you).

⁴ τοσαῦτα (So many things) ἐπάθετε (did you suffer) εἰκῇ (in vain), εἴ (if) γε (indeed) καὶ (also) εἰκῇ (in vain)?

⁸ Τῇ (-) γὰρ (For) χάριτί (by grace) ἐστε (you are) σεσῳσμένοι (saved) διὰ (through) πίστεως (faith), καὶ (and) τοῦτο (this) οὐκ (not) ἐξ (of) ὑμῶν (yourselves); Θεοῦ (it is of God) τὸ (the) δῶρον (gift),

²³ εἴ (if) γε (indeed) ἐπιμένετε (you continue) τῇ (-) πίστει (in the faith), τεθεμελιωμένοι (established) καὶ (and) ἑδραῖοι (firm), καὶ (and) μὴ (not) μετακινούμενοι (being moved away) ἀπὸ (from) τῆς (the) ἐλπίδος (hope) τοῦ (of the) εὐαγγελίου (gospel) οὗ (that) ἠκούσατε (you have heard), τοῦ (-) κηρυχθέντος (having been proclaimed) ἐν (in) πάσῃ (all) κτίσει (creation) τῇ (-) ὑπὸ (under) τὸν (-) οὐρανόν (heaven), οὗ (of which) ἐγενόμην (have become) ἐγὼ (I) Παῦλος (Paul) διάκονος (a minister).

¹⁵ Ἄρα (So) οὖν (then), ἀδελφοί (brothers), στήκετε (stand firm) καὶ (and) κρατεῖτε (hold fast) τὰς (to the) παραδόσεις (traditions) ἃς (that) ἐδιδάχθητε (you were taught), εἴτε (whether) διὰ (by) λόγου (word), εἴτε (or) δι’ (by) ἐπιστολῆς (letter) ἡμῶν (from us).

⁹ τοῦ (the One) σώσαντος (having saved) ἡμᾶς (us), καὶ (and) καλέσαντος (having called us) κλήσει (with a calling) ἁγίᾳ (holy), οὐ (not) κατὰ (according to) τὰ (the) ἔργα (works) ἡμῶν (of us), ἀλλὰ (but) κατὰ (according to) ἰδίαν (His own) πρόθεσιν (purpose) καὶ (and) χάριν (grace), τὴν (-) δοθεῖσαν (having been given) ἡμῖν (us) ἐν (in) Χριστῷ (Christ) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus) πρὸ (before) χρόνων (time) αἰωνίων (eternal),

¹ Διὰ (Because of) τοῦτο (this), δεῖ (it behooves) περισσοτέρως (more abundantly) προσέχειν (to give heed) ἡμᾶς (us) τοῖς (to the things) ἀκουσθεῖσιν (we have heard), μή‿ (lest) ποτε (ever) παραρυῶμεν (we should drift away).

⁶ Χριστὸς (Christ) δὲ (however) ὡς (as) υἱὸς (the Son) ἐπὶ (over) τὸν (the) οἶκον (house) αὐτοῦ (of Him), οὗ (whose) οἶκός (house) ἐσμεν (are) ἡμεῖς (we), ἐὰν (if indeed) τὴν (our) παρρησίαν (confidence), καὶ (and) τὸ (the) καύχημα (boast) τῆς (of our) ἐλπίδος (hope), κατάσχωμεν (we should hold).

¹⁴ Μέτοχοι (Partakers) γὰρ (for) τοῦ (-) Χριστοῦ (of Christ) γεγόναμεν (we have become), ἐάνπερ (if indeed) τὴν (from the) ἀρχὴν (beginning) τῆς (the) ὑποστάσεως (assurance) μέχρι (unto) τέλους (the end) βεβαίαν (firm) κατάσχωμεν (we should hold).

¹⁴ Ἔχοντες (Having) οὖν (therefore) ἀρχιερέα (a high priest) μέγαν (great), διεληλυθότα (having passed through) τοὺς (the) οὐρανούς (heavens), Ἰησοῦν (Jesus), τὸν (the) Υἱὸν (Son) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), κρατῶμεν (we should hold firmly) τῆς (to our) ὁμολογίας (confession).

²³ Κατέχωμεν (We should hold fast) τὴν (to the) ὁμολογίαν (confession) τῆς (of our) ἐλπίδος (hope), ἀκλινῆ (firmly); πιστὸς (faithful) γὰρ (for is) ὁ (the One) ἐπαγγειλάμενος (having promised).

¹⁴ Τί (What is) τὸ (the) ὄφελος (profit), ἀδελφοί (brothers) μου (of me), ἐὰν (if) πίστιν (faith) λέγῃ (says) τις (anyone) ἔχειν (to have), ἔργα (works) δὲ (however) μὴ (not) ἔχῃ (he has)? μὴ (Not) δύναται (is able) ἡ (the) πίστις (faith) σῶσαι (to save) αὐτόν (him)?

¹⁷ οὕτως (So) καὶ (also) ἡ (-) πίστις (faith), ἐὰν (if) μὴ (not) ἔχῃ (it has) ἔργα (works), νεκρά (dead) ἐστιν (is), καθ’ (by) ἑαυτήν (itself).

²⁶ ὥσπερ (Just as) γὰρ (for) τὸ (the) σῶμα (body) χωρὶς (apart from) πνεύματος (spirit) νεκρόν (dead) ἐστιν (is), οὕτως (so) καὶ (also) ἡ (-) πίστις (faith) χωρὶς (apart from) ἔργων (works) νεκρά (dead) ἐστιν (is).
