LXX_WH(i) 1 ἀγρυπνία πλούτου ἐκτήκει σάρκας καὶ ἡ μέριμνα αὐτοῦ ἀφιστᾷ ὕπνον 2 μέριμνα ἀγρυπνίας ἀποστήσει νυσταγμόν καὶ ἀρρώστημα βαρὺ ἐκνήψει ὕπνον 3 ἐκοπίασεν πλούσιος ἐν συναγωγῇ χρημάτων καὶ ἐν τῇ ἀναπαύσει ἐμπίμπλαται τῶν τρυφημάτων αὐτοῦ 4 ἐκοπίασεν πτωχὸς ἐν ἐλαττώσει βίου καὶ ἐν τῇ ἀναπαύσει ἐπιδεὴς γίνεται 5 ὁ ἀγαπῶν χρυσίον οὐ δικαιωθήσεται καὶ ὁ διώκων διάφορα ἐν αὐτοῖς πλανηθήσεται 6 πολλοὶ ἐδόθησαν εἰς πτῶμα χάριν χρυσίου καὶ ἐγενήθη ἡ ἀπώλεια αὐτῶν κατὰ πρόσωπον αὐτῶν 7 ξύλον προσκόμματός ἐστιν τοῖς ἐνθουσιάζουσιν αὐτῷ καὶ πᾶς ἄφρων ἁλώσεται ἐν αὐτῷ 8 μακάριος πλούσιος ὃς εὑρέθη ἄμωμος καὶ ὃς ὀπίσω χρυσίου οὐκ ἐπορεύθη 9 τίς ἐστιν καὶ μακαριοῦμεν αὐτόν ἐποίησεν γὰρ θαυμάσια ἐν λαῷ αὐτοῦ 10 τίς ἐδοκιμάσθη ἐν αὐτῷ καὶ ἐτελειώθη καὶ ἔσται αὐτῷ εἰς καύχησιν τίς ἐδύνατο παραβῆναι καὶ οὐ παρέβη καὶ ποιῆσαι κακὰ καὶ οὐκ ἐποίησεν 11 στερεωθήσεται τὰ ἀγαθὰ αὐτοῦ καὶ τὰς ἐλεημοσύνας αὐτοῦ ἐκδιηγήσεται ἐκκλησία 12 ἐπὶ τραπέζης μεγάλης ἐκάθισας μὴ ἀνοίξῃς ἐπ' αὐτῆς φάρυγγά σου καὶ μὴ εἴπῃς πολλά γε τὰ ἐπ' αὐτῆς 13 μνήσθητι ὅτι κακὸν ὀφθαλμὸς πονηρός πονηρότερον ὀφθαλμοῦ τί ἔκτισται διὰ τοῦτο ἀπὸ παντὸς προσώπου δακρύει 14 οὗ ἐὰν ἐπιβλέψῃ μὴ ἐκτείνῃς χεῖρα καὶ μὴ συνθλίβου αὐτῷ ἐν τρυβλίῳ 15 νόει τὰ τοῦ πλησίον ἐκ σεαυτοῦ καὶ ἐπὶ παντὶ πράγματι διανοοῦ 16 φάγε ὡς ἄνθρωπος τὰ παρακείμενά σοι καὶ μὴ διαμασῶ μὴ μισηθῇς 17 παῦσαι πρῶτος χάριν παιδείας καὶ μὴ ἀπληστεύου μήποτε προσκόψῃς 18 καὶ εἰ ἀνὰ μέσον πλειόνων ἐκάθισας πρότερος αὐτῶν μὴ ἐκτείνῃς τὴν χεῖρά σου 19 ὡς ἱκανὸν ἀνθρώπῳ πεπαιδευμένῳ τὸ ὀλίγον καὶ ἐπὶ τῆς κοίτης αὐτοῦ οὐκ ἀσθμαίνει 20 ὕπνος ὑγιείας ἐπὶ ἐντέρῳ μετρίῳ ἀνέστη πρωί καὶ ἡ ψυχὴ αὐτοῦ μετ' αὐτοῦ πόνος ἀγρυπνίας καὶ χολέρας καὶ στρόφος μετὰ ἀνδρὸς ἀπλήστου 21 καὶ εἰ ἐβιάσθης ἐν ἐδέσμασιν ἀνάστα ἔμεσον πόρρω καὶ ἀναπαύσῃ 22 ἄκουσόν μου τέκνον καὶ μὴ ἐξουδενήσῃς με καὶ ἐπ' ἐσχάτων εὑρήσεις τοὺς λόγους μου ἐν πᾶσι τοῖς ἔργοις σου γίνου ἐντρεχής καὶ πᾶν ἀρρώστημα οὐ μή σοι ἀπαντήσῃ 23 λαμπρὸν ἐπ' ἄρτοις εὐλογήσει χείλη καὶ ἡ μαρτυρία τῆς καλλονῆς αὐτοῦ πιστή 24 πονηρῷ ἐπ' ἄρτῳ διαγογγύσει πόλις καὶ ἡ μαρτυρία τῆς πονηρίας αὐτοῦ ἀκριβής 25 ἐν οἴνῳ μὴ ἀνδρίζου πολλοὺς γὰρ ἀπώλεσεν ὁ οἶνος 26 κάμινος δοκιμάζει στόμωμα ἐν βαφῇ οὕτως οἶνος καρδίας ἐν μάχῃ ὑπερηφάνων 27 ἔφισον ζωῆς οἶνος ἀνθρώποις ἐὰν πίνῃς αὐτὸν ἐν μέτρῳ αὐτοῦ τίς ζωὴ ἐλασσουμένῳ οἴνῳ καὶ αὐτὸς ἔκτισται εἰς εὐφροσύνην ἀνθρώποις 28 ἀγαλλίαμα καρδίας καὶ εὐφροσύνη ψυχῆς οἶνος πινόμενος ἐν καιρῷ αὐτάρκης 29 πικρία ψυχῆς οἶνος πινόμενος πολὺς ἐν ἐρεθισμῷ καὶ ἀντιπτώματι 30 πληθύνει μέθη θυμὸν ἄφρονος εἰς πρόσκομμα ἐλαττῶν ἰσχὺν καὶ προσποιῶν τραύματα 31 ἐν συμποσίῳ οἴνου μὴ ἐλέγξῃς τὸν πλησίον καὶ μὴ ἐξουθενήσῃς αὐτὸν ἐν εὐφροσύνῃ αὐτοῦ λόγον ὀνειδισμοῦ μὴ εἴπῃς αὐτῷ καὶ μὴ αὐτὸν θλίψῃς ἐν ἀπαιτήσει

Wycliffe(i) 1 Wakyng of oneste schal make fleischis to faile; and thouyt therof schal take awei sleep. 2 Thouyt of bifore knowyng turneth awey wit; and greuouse siknesse makith sobre the soule. 3 A ryche man trauelide in the gaderyng of catel; and in his reste he schal be fillyd with hise goodis. 4 A pore man trauelide in decreessyng of lijflode; and in the ende he is maad nedi. 5 He that loueth gold, schal not be iustified; and he that sueth wastyng, schal be fillid therof. 6 Many men ben youun in to the fallyngis of gold; and the perdicioun of hem was maad in the feirnesse therof. 7 A tre of offencioun is the gold of hem that maken sacrifice; wo to hem that suen it, and ech vnprudent man schal perische ther ynne. 8 Blissid is a riche man, which is foundun with out wem; and that yede not aftir gold, nether hopide in money, and tresouris. 9 Who is this, and we schulen preyse hym? for he dide merueils in his lijf. 10 Which is preued ther ynne, and is foundun perfit, and euerlastynge glorye schal be to hym? which myyte trespasse, and trespasside not, and do yuels, and dide not. 11 Therfor hise goodis ben stablischid in the Lord; and al the chirche of seyntis schal telle out hise almesdedis. 12 Thou hast sete at a greet boord; opene thou not firste thi cheke on it. 13 Seie thou not, whether tho ben many thingis, that ben on it. 14 Haue thou mynde, that an yuel iye is weiward. 15 What thing worse, than an iye is maad? therfor of al his face he schal wepe, whanne he seeth. 16 Stretche thou not forth first thin hond; and thou defoulid bi enuye, be aschamed. 17 Be thou not oppressid of wyn in a feeste. 18 Vnderstonde of thi silf the thingis, that ben of thi neiybore. 19 Vse thou as a discreet and temperat man these thingis that ben set forth to thee; and be thou not hatid, whanne thou etist myche. 20 Ceesse thou first bicause of lernyng, ethir nurture; and nyle thou be outrageouse, lest perauenture thou offende. 21 And if thou hast sete in the myddis of many men, stretche not forth thin hond sunnere than thei; and axe thou not firste for to drynke. 22 A litil wyn is ful sufficient to a lerned man; and in slepynge thou schalt not trauele for that wyn, and thou schalt not feele trauel. 23 Wakyng, and colre, ether bittir moisture, and gnawyng to an vndiscreet `either vntemperat man. 24 But the sleep of heelthe is in a scars man; he schal slepe `til to the morewtid, and his soule schal delite with hym. 25 And if thou art constreyned in etyng myche, ryse thou fro the myddis, and brake thou; and it schal refreische thee, and thou schalt not brynge sikenesse to thi bodi. 26 Sone, here thou me, and dispise thou not me; and at the laste thou schalt fynde my wordis. 27 In alle thi werkis be thou swift; and al sikenesse schal not come to thee. 28 The lippis of many men schulen blesse a schynynge man in looues; and the witnessyng of his treuthe is feithful. 29 The citee schal grutche in the worste breed; and the witnessyng of wickidnesse therof is soth. 30 Nyle thou excite hem that ben diligent in wyn; for whi wyn hath distried many men. 31 Fier preueth hard irun; so wyn drunkun in drunkenesse schal repreue the hertis of proude men. 32 Euene lijf to men is wyn drunkun in sobrenesse; if thou drynkist it mesurably, thou schalt be sobre. 33 What is the lijf which is maad lesse bi wyn? 34 What defraudith lijf? deth. 35 Wyn was maad in gladnesse, not in drunkenesse, at the bigynnyng. 36 Wyn drunkun mesurabli is ful out ioiyng of soule and of bodi. 37 Sobre drynk is helthe of soule and of bodi. 38 Wyn drunkun myche makith avoiding, and ire, and many fallyngis. 39 Wyn drunkun myche is bitternesse of soule. 40 Strengthe of drunkenesse and hirting of an vnprudent man makith vertu lesse, and makynge woundis. 41 In the feeste of wyn repreue thou not a neiybore; and dispise thou not hym in his mirthe. 42 Seye thou not wordis of schenschipe to hym; and oppresse thou not hym in axynge.
Geneva(i) 1 Waking after riches pineth away the bodie, and the care thereof driueth away sleepe. 2 This waking care breaketh the sleepe, as a great sicknes breaketh the sleepe. 3 The rich hath great labour in gathering riches together, & in his rest hee is filled with pleasures. 4 The poore laboureth in liuing poorely, and when he leaueth off, he is still poore. 5 He that loueth golde, shall not bee iustified, & he that followeth corruption, shal haue ynough thereof. 6 Many are destroyed by the reason of gold, and haue found their destruction before them. 7 It is as a stumbling block vnto them that sacrifice vnto it, and euerie foole is taken therewith. 8 Blessed is the riche which is found without blemish, and hath not gone after golde, nor hoped in money and treasures. 9 Who is hee, and wee will commend him? for wonderfull things hath he done among his people. 10 Who hath bene tryed thereby, and founde persite? let him be an example of glorie, who might offende, and hath not offended, or doe euill, and hath not done it. 11 Therefore shall his goods be stablished, and the congregation shall declare his almes. 12 If thou sit at a costlie table, open not thy mouth wide vpon it, & say not, Behold much meat. 13 Remember that an euil eye is a shrewe: and what thing created is worse then a wicked eye? for it weepeth for euery cause. 14 Stretch not thine hand wheresoeuer it looketh, and thrust it not with it into the dishe. 15 Consider by thy selfe him that is by thee, & marke euery thing. 16 Eate modestly that which is set before thee, and deuoure not, lest thou be hated. 17 Leaue thou off first for nurtours sake, and be not insatiable, lest thou offend. 18 When thou sittest among many, reach not thine hand out first of all. 19 How litle is sufficiet for a man wel taught? and thereby he belcheth not in his chamber, nor feeleth any paine. 20 A wholesome sleepe commeth of a temperate bellie: he riseth vp in the morning, and is wel at ease in him selfe: but paine in watching and cholericke diseases, and panges of the bellie are with an vnsatiable man. 21 If thou hast bene forced to eate, arise, goe forth, vomite, and then take thy rest: so thou shalt bring no sicknesse vnto thy bodie. 22 My sonne, heare me, and despise me not, & at the last thou shalt finde as I haue tolde thee: in all thy works be quicke, so shall there no sicknesse come vnto thee. 23 Who so is liberal in his meate, men shall blesse him: and the testimonie of his honestie shalbe beleeued. 24 But against him that is a nigard of his meat, the whole citie shall murmure: the testimonies of his nigardnes shalbe sure. 25 Shew not thy valiantnes in wine: for wine hath destroyed many. 26 The fornace proueth the edge in the tempering: so doeth wine the heartes of the proude by drunkennesse. 27 Wine soberly drunken, is profitable for the life of man: what is his life that is ouercome with wine? 28 Wine was made from the beginning to make men glad, and not for drunkennesse. Wine measurably drunken and in time, bringeth gladnes and cherefulnesse of the minde. 29 But wine drunken with excesse maketh bitternes of minde with braulings and scouldings. 30 Drunkennesse increaseth the courage of a foole, til hee offend: it diminisheth his strength and maketh woundes. 31 Rebuke not thy neighbour at the wine, and despise him not in his mirth: giue him no despiteful wordes, and presse not vpon him with contrarie wordes.
Bishops(i) 1 Trauaile and carefulnesse for riches taketh away the sleepe, and maketh the fleshe to consume. 2 When one lyeth and taketh care, he waketh euer vp, lyke as a great sicknesse breaketh the sleepe. 3 The rich hath great labour in gathering his riches together, and then with the pleasure of his riches he taketh his rest and is refreshed. 4 But who so laboureth and prospereth not, he is poore: and though he leaue of, yet is he a begger. 5 He that loueth riches, shal not be iustified: and who so foloweth corruption, shall haue inough thereof. 6 Many one are come in great misfortune by the reason of golde, and haue founde their destruction before them. 7 It is a tree of falling vnto them that offer it vp, and all such as be foolishe fal therein. 8 Blessed is the rich which is founde without blemishe, & hath not gone after golde, nor hoped in money & treasures. 9 Where is there such a one, and we shal commend him and call him blessed? for wonderfull thinges doth he among his people. 10 Who so is tryed and founde perfect in such thinges, shalbe commended and praysed: who might offende, and hath not offended? who coulde do euill, and hath not done it? 11 Therfore shall his good be stablished, and the whole congregation shall declare his almes. 12 If thou sit at a great mans table, open not thy mouth wide vpon it, and say not there is much meate on it. 13 Remember that an euil eye is a shrewe: What thing created is worse then a wicked eye? therefore weepeth it before euery mans face? 14 Laye not thyne hande vpon euery thing that thyne eye seeth: and striue not with him in the dishe. 15 Ponder by thy selfe what thy neighbour would faine haue, and be discreete in euery poynt. 16 Eate the thing that is set before thee manerlie as it becommeth a man, and eate not to much, lest thou be abhorred. 17 Leaue thou of first of al, because of nurture, lest thou be he whom no man may satisfie, which may turne to thy decay. 18 When thou sittest among many men, reache not thyne hand out first of al, neither call thou first for drinke. 19 O how well content is a wyse man with a litle wine? so that in sleepe thou shalt not be sicke thereof, nor feele any payne. 20 A sweete holsome sleepe shall such a one haue, and feele no inwarde greefe, he ryseth vp betimes in the morning, and is wel at ease in him selfe: but an vnsatiable eater sleepeth vnquietly, and hath ache and payne of the body. 21 If thou feelest that thou hast eaten to much, arise, go thy way, cast it of thy stomacke, and take thy rest: and it shall ease thee, so that thou shalt bring no sicknesse vnto thy body. 22 My sonne heare me, and despise me not, and at the last thou shalt finde as I haue tolde thee: In all thy workes be diligent and quicke, so shall there no sicknesse happen vnto thee. 23 Who so is liberall in dealing out his meate, many men shall blesse him, and prayse him with their lippes: and the same is a sure token of his loue & faithfulnesse. 24 But he that is vnfaithfull in meate, the whole citie shall complaine of him: and that is a sure experience of his infidelitie and wickednesse. 25 Shewe not thy valiantnes in wine, for wine hath destroyed many a man. 26 The fire prooueth the hard iron: euen so doth wine prooue the heartes of the proude, when they be druncken. 27 Wine soberly druncken, quickeneth the lyfe of man: If thou drinkest it measurably, thou shalt be temperate: What is the lyfe of him that is ouercome with wine? what taketh away the lyfe? euen death. 28 Wine was made from the beginning to make men glad, and not for drunkennesse: wine measurably drunken is a reioycing of the soule and body: A measurable drinking is health to soule and body. 29 But if it be druncken with excesse, it maketh bitternesse and sorowe vnto the minde. 30 Drunkennesse filleth the minde of the foolishe with shame & ruine, minisheth the strength, and maketh woundes. 31 Rebuke not thy neighbour at the wine, and despise him not in his mirth: Geue him no dispitefull wordes, and preasse not vpon him with contrary sayinges.

He that could have transgressed, and hath not transgressed: and could do evil things, and hath not done them: 11 Therefore are his goods established in the Lord, and all the church of the saints shall declare his alms. 12 Art thou set at a great table? be not the first to open thy mouth upon it. 13 Say not: There are many things which are upon it. 14 Remember that a wicked eye is evil. 15 What is created more wicked than an eye? therefore shall it weep over all the face when it shall see. 16 Stretch not out thy hand first, lest being disgraced with envy thou be put to confusion. 17 Be not hasty in a feast. 18 Judge of the disposition of thy neighbour by thyself. 19 Use as a frugal man the things that are set before thee: lest if thou eatest much, thou be hated. 20 Leave off first, for manners' sake: and exceed not, lest thou offend. 21 21And if thou sittest among many, reach not thy hand out first of all: and be not the first to ask for drink. 22 How sufficient is a little wine for a man well taught, and in sleeping thou shalt not be uneasy with it, and thou shalt feel no pain. 23 Watching, and choler, and gripes, are with an intemperate man: 24 Sound and wholesome sleep with a moderate man: he shall sleep till morning, and his soul shall be delighted with him. 25 And if thou hast been forced to eat much, arise, go out, and vomit: and it shall refresh thee, and thou shalt not bring sickness upon thy body. 26 Hear me, my son, and despise me not: and in the end thou shalt find my words. 27 In all thy works be quick, and no infirmity shall come to thee. 28 The lips of many shall bless him that is liberal of his bread, and the testimony of his truth is faithful. 29 Against him that is niggardly of his bread, the city will murmur, and the testimony of his niggardliness is true. 30 Challenge not them that love wine: for wine hath destroyed very many. 31 Fire trieth hard iron: so wine drunk to excess shall rebuke the hearts of the proud. 32 Wine taken with sobriety is equal lire to men: if thou drink it moderately, thou shalt be sober. 33 What is his life, who is diminished with wine? 34 What taketh away life? death. 35 Wine was created from the beginning to make men joyful, and not to make them drunk. 36 Wine drunken with moderation is the joy of the soul and the heart. 37 Sober drinking is health to soul and body. 38 Wine drunken with excess raiseth quarrels; and wrath, and many ruins. 39 Wine drunken with excess is bitterness of the soul. 40 The heat of drunkenness is the stumblingblock of the fool, lessening strength and causing wounds. 41 Rebuke not thy neighbour in a banquet of wine: and despise him not in his mirth. 42 Speak not to him words of reproach: and press him not in demanding again.

Who might offend, and hath not offended? or done evil, and hath not done it? 11 His goods shall be established, and the congregation shall declare his alms. 12 If thou sit at a bountiful table, be not greedy upon it, and say not, There is much meat on it. 13 Remember that a wicked eye is an evil thing: and what is created more wicked than an eye? therefore it weepeth upon every occasion. 14 Stretch not thine hand whithersoever it looketh, and thrust it not with him into the dish. 15 Judge not thy neighbour by thyself: and be discreet in every point. 16 Eat as it becometh a man, those things which are set before thee; and devour note, lest thou be hated. 17 Leave off first for manners' sake; and be not unsatiable, lest thou offend. 18 When thou sittest among many, reach not thine hand out first of all. 19 A very little is sufficient for a man well nurtured, and he fetcheth not his wind short upon his bed. 20 Sound sleep cometh of moderate eating: he riseth early, and his wits are with him: but the pain of watching, and choler, and pangs of the belly, are with an unsatiable man. 21 And if thou hast been forced to eat, arise, go forth, vomit, and thou shalt have rest. 22 My son, hear me, and despise me not, and at the last thou shalt find as I told thee: in all thy works be quick, so shall there no sickness come unto thee. 23 Whoso is liberal of his meat, men shall speak well of him; and the report of his good housekeeping will be believed. 24 But against him that is a niggard of his meat the whole city shall murmur; and the testimonies of his niggardness shall not be doubted of. 25 Shew not thy valiantness in wine; for wine hath destroyed many. 26 The furnace proveth the edge by dipping: so doth wine the hearts of the proud by drunkeness. 27 Wine is as good as life to a man, if it be drunk moderately: what life is then to a man that is without wine? for it was made to make men glad. 28 Wine measurably drunk and in season bringeth gladness of the heart, and cheerfulness of the mind: 29 But wine drunken with excess maketh bitterness of the mind, with brawling and quarrelling. 30 Drunkenness increaseth the rage of a fool till he offend: it diminisheth strength, and maketh wounds. 31 Rebuke not thy neighbour at the wine, and despise him not in his mirth: give him no despiteful words, and press not upon him with urging him [to drink.]
