Numbers 32:1-42

VIN(i) 1 The sons of Reuben and the sons of Gad had a large number of livestock. They saw the land of Jazer and the land of Gilead was indeed a place suitable for livestock. 2 They came to Moses and Eleazar the priest, and the princes of the multitude, and said: 3 "Ataroth, Dibon, Jazer, Nimrah, Heshbon, Elealeh, Sebam, Nebo, and Beon, 4 the land that the LORD struck before the community of Israel, is a land of livestock, and your servants have livestock." 5 And they said, If we have found favor in your eyes, let this land be given to your servants for a possession. Do not make us pass over the Jordan. 6 Whereupon Moses said to the Gadites and the Reubenites, Must your brethren go to war, and you sit still here? 7 And why do ye discourage the children of Israel from going over into the land that the LORD has given them? 8 This is what your fathers did when I sent them from Kadesh Barnea to see the land. 9 they went up to the valley of Eshcol, and saw the land, and discouraged the children of Israel, that they should not go into the land that the LORD had given them. 10 The LORD's anger was kindled in that day, and he swore, saying, 11 If these men, that came up out of Egypt, from twenty years old and upward, shall see the land, which I promised with an oath to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob: because they would not follow me, 12 except Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite and Joshua son of Nun, because they followed the LORD wholly.' 13 "the LORD's anger blazed against the Israelites. Therefore he made them wander in the desert for forty years until the whole generation of those who had done evil in the LORD's presence was gone. 14 Behold you are risen up in your fathers' stead, a set of sinful men, to augment the wrath of the Lord against Israel. 15 "If you turn away from him he will abandon all these people in the desert. You would be responsible for their destruction." 16 And they came near to him and said, We will build sheepfolds here for our livestock, and cities for our little ones. 17 but we ourselves will become armed and ready before the Israelites until we have brought them to their place, and our little children will live in the fortified cities because of the inhabitants of the land. 18 "We will not return to our homes until every Israelite has received his own land. 19 For we will not inherit with them on the other side of the Jordan and beyond, because our inheritance has come to us on this side of the Jordan eastward.” 20 And Moses will say to them, If ye will do this word, if ye will arm yourselves before the LORD for battle, 21 and all of you will go armed over Jordan before the LORD until He has driven out His enemies from before Him, 22 and the land is subdued before the LORD; then afterward you shall return, and be clear of obligation to the LORD and to Israel. Then this land shall be your possession before the LORD. 23 "But if you will not do so, look, you have sinned against the LORD; and be sure your sin will find you out. 24 "So build your towns and the enclosures for your sheep, but do what you have promised!" 25 And the sons of Reuben and the sons of Gad spoke to Moses, saying, Your servants will do as our Lord commands. 26 Our children, our wives, substance, and all our cattle, shall remain here in the cities of Gilead. 27 but your servants, everyone who is armed for battle, will cross over ⌊before⌋ Yahweh to the war, just as my lord says." 28 So Moses gave orders about them to Eleazar the priest and to Joshua, the son of Nun, and to the heads of families of the tribes of the children of Israel. 29 and said unto them, "If the children of Gad and Reuben will go with you over Jordan, all prepared to fight before the LORD: then when the land is subdued unto you, give them the land of Gilead to possess. 30 But if they will not cross over with you armed, they will acquire land in your midst in Canaan." 31 The tribes of Gad and Reuben replied: "We are your servants and will do whatever the LORD has commanded. 32 We will go harnessed before the LORD into the land of Canaan, and the possession of our inheritance shall be on this side the Jordan." 33 Moses therefore gave to the children of Gad and of Ruben, and to the half tribe of Manasses the son of Joseph, the kingdom of Sehon king of the Amorrhites, and the kingdom of Og king of Basan, and their land and the cities thereof round about. 34 The sons of Gad rebuilt Dibon, Ataroth, Aroer, 35 Atroth Shophan, Jazer, Jogbehah, 36 Beth Nimrah, and Beth Haran: fortified cities and folds for sheep. 37 And the Reubenites rebuilt Esebon, and Eleale, and Kariatham, 38 Nebo, and Baal Meon, (their names being changed), and Sibmah. They gave other names to the cities which they built. 39 The descendants of Machir son of Manasseh went to Gilead. They captured it and forced out the Amorites who were there. 40 So Moses gave Gilead to the people of Machir the descendants of Manasseh, and they lived there. 41 Then Jair, a descendant of Manasseh, captured the settlements in Gilead. He called them Havvoth Jair. 42 Nobah captured Kenath and its villages. He named it Nobah after himself.
