Numbers 31

VIN(i) 1 the LORD said to Moses: 2 "Seek vengeance for the Israelites on the Midianites; afterward you will be gathered to your people." 3 Moses said to the people: "Your men must get ready to go to war against the Midianites. the LORD will use them to get even with Midian. 4 "Send one thousand men from each of the tribes of Israel." 5 So theywere assigned from the thousands of Israel, a thousand from each tribe, twelve thousand equipped for battle. 6 Moses sent them, one thousand of every tribe, to the war with Phinehas the son of Eleazar the priest, to the war, with the vessels of the sanctuary and the trumpets for the alarm in his hand. 7 They fought against Midian, as the LORD commanded Moses. They killed every male. 8 They killed the kings of Midian with the rest of their slain: Evi, Rekem, Zur, Hur, and Reba, the five kings of Midian. They also killed Balaam the son of Beor with the sword. 9 The Israelites took the Midianite women and children as prisoners of war. They also took all their animals, their livestock, and their valuables as loot. 10 They burned the cities where the Midianites lived and all their settlements. 11 They took everything as loot including all the people and animals, 12 They brought the captives, the war-booty, and the plunder to Moses, and to Eleazar the priest, and to the community of the Israelites, to the camp to the desert-plateau of Moab, which was on the Jordan across Jericho. 13 And Moses and Eleazar the priest and all the leaders of the community went out to meet them outside the camp. 14 And Moses was angry with the officers of the army, the captains over thousands and captains over hundreds, who came from the battle. 15 and said unto them, "Have ye saved the women alive? 16 Lo, these, through the counsel of Balaam, caused the children of Israel to commit sin against the LORD in the matter of Peor, and there was a plague on the assembly of the LORD. 17 "So kill all the Midianite boys and every Midianite woman who has gone to bed with a man. 18 "But keep alive for yourselves every girl who has never gone to bed with a man. 19 And abide without the camp seven days. Every one who hath slain, or who hath touched one slain, must be purified on the third day, and on the seventh day, including yourselves and your captives. 20 "You must do the same for all the clothes and everything made of leather, goats' hair, or wood." 21 And Eleazar the priest said to the men of war who went to battle, This is the ordinance of the law which the LORD commanded Moses. 22 Gold, silver, brass, iron, tin and lead, 23 everything that can stand the fire, you shall make go through the fire, and it shall be clean. Only it shall be purified with the water of separation. And all that cannot stand the fire you shall make go through the water. 24 And on the seventh day you must wash your clothes, and you shall be clean; and after that you may come into the camp. 25 the LORD spoke to Moses: 26 "You and Eleazar the priest and the heads of the families of the congregation take a count of the booty that was captured, both of man and of animal. 27 "Divide the booty between the warriors who went out to battle and the entire congregation. 28 And from the men of war who went out let there be offered to the Lord one out of every five hundred, from the persons, and from the oxen and asses and sheep: 29 Take it from their half, and give it to Eleazar the priest, for the LORD's wave offering. 30 "From the sons of Israel’s half, you shall take one drawn out of every fifty of the persons, of the cattle, of the donkeys and of the sheep, from all the animals, and give them to the Levites who keep charge of the tabernacle of the LORD." 31 Moses and Eleazar the priest did as the LORD commanded Moses. 32 And the spoil which the army had taken, was six hundred seventy-five thousand sheep, 33 34 35 and thirty two thousand women that had lain by no man. 36 37 of which the tribute for the Lord was six hundred and seventy five; 38 and of cattle, thirty six thousand, of which the tribute for the Lord was seventy two; 39 And donkeys, thirty thousand five hundred, and the tribute to the Lord was sixty-one. 40 And the persons were sixteen thousand, of which the tribute for the LORD was thirty-two persons. 41 Moses gave the tribute, which was the LORD's wave offering, to Eleazar the priest, as the LORD commanded Moses. 42 From the half of the Israelites, which Moses divided from the men who were fighting, 43 44 45 46 47 even of the sons of Israel's half, Moses took one drawn out of every fifty, both of man and of beast, and gave them to the Levites, who kept the charge of the tabernacle of LORD, as LORD commanded Moses. 48 And the officers who were over thousands of the army, the captains of thousands, and captains of hundreds, came near unto Moses: 49 Your servants have taken the sum of the men of war with us, and not one is missing. 50 "So we brought as an offering to the LORD what each man found, articles of gold, armlets and ankle bracelets, signet rings, earrings and necklaces, to make atonement for ourselves before the LORD." 51 So Moses and Eleazar the priest, received from them the gold; all the wrought jewels; 52 And the gold which the captains of thousands and captains of hundreds gave, as an offering to be lifted up before the Lord, came to sixteen thousand, seven hundred and fifty shekels. 53 The men of war plundered each for himself. 54 So Moses and Eleazar the priest took the gold from the captains of thousands and of hundreds, and brought it to the tent of meeting as a memorial for the Israelites before the LORD.
