(5:1) AND they came across the lake to the country of the Gerasenes.
As soon as Jesus got out of the boat, a man with an unclean spirit came from the tombs and met Him.
He lived in the tombs, and no one could bind him any more, not even with a chain.
For he had often been bound with shackles and chains, but he wrenched the chains apart, and he broke the shackles in pieces. No one had the strength to subdue him.
Night and day in the tombs and in the mountains, he kept crying out and cutting himself with stones.
When he saw Jesus from a distance, he ran and fell down in front of him,
And he shouted in a loud voice, “What do You want with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I beg You before God not to torture me.”
For Jesus had said to him, Come out of the man, you unclean spirit.
and Jesus asked him, what is thy name? my name is legion, answered he: for we are many.
and he begged Jesus again and again not to send them away out of that country.
Now a large herd of pigs was feeding there on the hillside.
So the demons begged him, "Send us among the pigs, so that we can go into them!"
So he gave them permission. And the foul spirits came out and went into the pigs, and the drove of about two thousand rushed over the steep bank into the sea, and were drowned.
Those tending the pigs ran off and reported this in the town and countryside, and the people went out to see what had happened.
When they came to Jesus, they saw the man who had been possessed by the legion of demons sitting there, clothed and in his right mind; and they were afraid.
And those who had seen it told the people what had happened to the demon-possessed man, and about the swine.
And the people began to plead with Jesus to leave their region.
As Jesus was getting into the boat, the man who had been demon-possessed kept begging him to let him go with him.
Jesus did not let him, but said, "Go home to your friends and tell them how much the Lord has done for you, and how he has had mercy on you."
So the man went away and began to proclaim throughout the Decapolis how much Jesus had done for him. And everyone was amazed.
When Jesus had recrossed in the boat to the other side of the lake, a great crowd gathered around him as he stood on the shore.
And, behold, one of the synagogue rulers named Jairus came. And seeing Him, he fell at His feet.
and pleaded earnestly with him, saying, "My little daughter is at the point of death. Come and lay your hands on her, so that she may be healed, and live."
So Jesus went with him, and a large crowd followed and pressed around Him.
Now a certain woman—who had been bleeding for twelve years,
and had suffered many things under many doctors, and had spent all that she had, yet instead of getting better she grew worse—
When she heard about Jesus, she came up behind him in the crowd and touched his garment.
For she said, If I just touch his clothes, I shall be healed.
And immediately the bleeding stopped; and she felt in her body that she was healed of her disease.
Jesus at once perceived that power had gone out of Him, and so He turned around in the crowd, and asked, "Who touched my clothes?"
"You see the people pressing round you," exclaimed his disciples, "and yet you say 'Who touched me?'"
But He kept looking around to see who had done it.
Then the woman, knowing what had happened to her, came and fell down before Him trembling in fear, and she told Him the whole truth.
But he said to her, "Daughter, your faith has healed you. Go in peace and be well from your suffering."
While He was still speaking, messengers from the house of Jairus arrived and said, “Your daughter is dead; why bother the Teacher anymore?”
But hearing the word spoken, Jesus said to the synagogue ruler, Do not be afraid, only believe.
He allowed no one to follow him, except Peter, James, and John the brother of James.
When they came to the home of the synagogue leader, Jesus saw mass confusion. People were crying and sobbing loudly.
He went inside and asked, “Why all this commotion and weeping? The child is not dead, but asleep.”
And they laughed at him. But after he put them all outside, he took the child's father and mother and those who were with him, and went in where the child was.
He took her by the hand and said to her, "Talitha cumi!" which means, "Little girl, I say to you, arise."
And immediately the girl arose, and walked; for she was twelve years old. And they were completely astonished.
But he strictly forbade them to let anyone know about it, and told them to give her something to eat.
