The word coming to Jeremiah concerning all the people of Judah, in the fourth year of Jehoiakim son of Josiah king of Judah; it was the first year to Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon;
which Jeremiah the prophet spoke to all the people of Judah, and to all the inhabitants of Jerusalem:
"From the thirteenth year of the reign of Ammon's son Josiah, the king of Judah, until the present time, for 23 years the word of the LORD has come to me, and I've spoken to you again and again, but you haven't listened.
"the LORD has sent all his servants the prophets to you. Yet, you have not listened or paid attention to them."
Turn, everyone of you, from his evil way, and from your evil practices, and you shall dwell in the land which I gave to you and your fathers, forever and ever.
"Do not follow other gods to serve and worship them. Do not make me furious about the idols your hands have shaped. Then I will not harm you."
"'You have not listened to me,' declares the LORD. 'You have made me furious about the idols your hands have shaped. You have brought harm upon yourselves.'
Therefore the LORD Almighty says thus: Because you have not heard my words,
I'm now sending for all the tribes from the north, declares the LORD, and for my servant Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon. I'll bring them against this land, against its inhabitants, and against all these surrounding nations. I'll utterly destroy them and make them an object of horror and scorn, and an everlasting desolation.
"I will take from them the sounds of joy and happiness, the sounds of brides and grooms, the sound of mills, and the light of lamps.
This whole land will be a desolation, and an astonishment; and these nations will serve the king of Babylon seventy years.
And it shall be, when seventy years are fulfilled, I will punish the king of Babylon and that nation, and the land of the Chaldeans, for their iniquity, says the LORD; and I will make it everlasting ruins.
And I will bring upon that land all my words which I have spoken against it, with all that is written in this book, prophesied by Jeremiah against all the Gentiles.
For they have served them, whereas they were many nations, and great kings: and I will repay them according to their deeds, and according to the works of their hands.
"This is what the LORD the God of Israel said to me: 'Take from my hand this cup filled with the wine of my fury, and make all the nations to whom I am sending you drink from it.
And they shall drink, and stagger, and go mad, because of the sword that I will send among them.
So I took the cup from the LORD's hand, and I made all the nations to whom the LORD sent me drink it:
Jerusalem, the cities of Judah, its kings and officials to make them into a ruin, an object of horror and scorn, and a curse, as it is this day;
Pharaoh king of Egypt, and his servants, and his officials, and all his people;
and all the mixed people, and all the kings of the land of Uz, all the kings of the Philistines, Ashkelon, Gaza, Ekron, and the remnant of Ashdod;
Edom, and Moab, and the Ammonites;
all the kings of Tyre and Sidon; the kings of the Isles that are beyond the sea;
Dedan, Tema, Buz and the shaven Ishmaelites;
all the kings of Arabia and all the kings of the various people who live in the desert;
and all the kings of Ailam and all the kings of the Persians
all the kings of the north, near and far, one after another-all the kingdoms of the earth. Last of all, the king of Sheshach will drink from the cup.
So you shall say to them, So says the LORD Almighty, the God of Israel: Drink and be drunk, and vomit, and fall, and rise no more, because of the sword which I will send among you.
"'If they refuse to take the cup from your hand and drink from it, say to them: 'This is what the LORD Almighty says: "You must drink from it!
"'I am going to bring disaster on the city that is named after me. Do you think you will go unpunished? You will not go unpunished! I am declaring war on all those who live on earth,' declares the LORD Almighty.
"That is why you will prophecy all these things to them and say: the LORD roars from above. He thunders from his holy dwelling place. He roars against his land. He shouts like those who stomp grapes. He shouts against all those who live on earth.
"'The sound is echoing to the ends of the earth because the LORD has brought charges against the nations. He will judge all humans. He will kill the wicked,' declares the LORD.
"This is what the LORD Almighty says: 'Disaster is spreading from nation to nation. A great storm is brewing from the distant corners of the earth.
"'On that day those killed by the LORD will stretch from one end of the earth to the other. They will not be mourned, taken away, or buried. They will become like manure on the ground.'
»Mourn, you shepherds, and cry. Roll in the dust, you leaders of the flock. The time has come for you to be slaughtered. The time has come for you to be scattered, and you will break like fine pottery.
The shepherds will have no way to flee. The leader of the flock will have no escape.
Hark! the cry of the shepherds, and the wailing of the leaders of the flock! For the LORD despoileth their pasture.
The peaceful folds are brought to silence because of the fierce anger of the LORD.
Like a lion, he has left his den. Indeed, their land has become a waste because of the anger of the oppressor and because of the LORD's fierce anger."
