He did not eat anything during those days so when it was over he was hungry. ³ The devil said to him: »If you are the Son of God command this stone to become bread.« ⁴ Jesus answered him: »It is written, man shall not live by bread alone.« (Deuteronomy 8:3) ⁵ He led him up to a high place and showed him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time. ⁶ Then the devil said: »I will give all this authority and glory to you, for it has been turned over to me. I may give it to whomever I will. ⁷ »If you will worship me it will all be yours.« ⁸ Jesus answered: »It is written, you shall worship Jehovah your God and him only shall you serve.« (Deuteronomy 6:13-15; 10:12; 10:20) (Exodus 20:3-5) ⁹ He led him to Jerusalem and set him on the pinnacle (highest level) of the temple. Then he said to him: »If you are the Son of God, cast yourself down from here. ¹⁰ »It is written, he shall give his angels charge concerning you to guard you. ¹¹ »They will carry you with their hands so you do not dash your foot against a stone.« ¹² Jesus replied: »It is said you should not test Jehovah your God.« (Deuteronomy 6:16) ¹³ When the devil had completed every temptation he departed from him for a season.
