And he ate nothing during those days; and when they were ended, he was afterward hungry. ³ And the devil said to him: If you are the Son of God, command this stone to become bread. ⁴ And Jesus answered him, and said: It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God. ⁵ And the devil took him up into a high mountain, and showed him all the kingdoms of the world, in a moment of time. ⁶ And the devil said to him: I will give you all the authority and glory of these, for it is delivered to me; and to whomever I will, I give it. ⁷ If, therefore, you will bow with reverence before me, all shall be yours. ⁸ And Jesus answered and said to him: Get behind me, Satan; it is written, You shall worship the Lord your God, and him only shall you serve. ⁹ And he brought him to Jerusalem, and placed him on the pinnacle of the temple, and said to him: If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down from this place; ¹⁰ for it is written, He will give his angels charge concerning you, to guard you carefully; ¹¹ and in their hands they shall take you up, lest you strike your foot against a stone. ¹² And Jesus answered and said to him: It is said, You shall not put the Lord your God to the proof. ¹³ And when the devil had ended all the temptation, he departed from him for a time.
