Knowing Jesus had given them an apt answer, he put this question to him, "What is the chief of all the commands?" ²⁹ Jesus replied, "The chief one is: Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God is one Lord, ³⁰ and you must love the Lord your God with your whole heart, with your whole soul, with your whole mind, and with your whole strength. ³¹ The second is this: You must love your neighbour as yourself. There is no other command greater than these." ³² The scribe said to him, "Right, teacher! You have truly said, He is One, and there is none else but Him. ³³ Also, to love him with the whole heart, with the whole understanding, and with the whole strength, and to love one's neighbour as oneself — that is far more than all holocausts and sacrifices." ³⁴ Jesus noted his intelligent answer and said to him, "You are not far off the Realm of God." After that no one ventured to put any more questions to him.
