1 Ὁμοίως (Likewise) [αἱ] (-) γυναῖκες (wives), ὑποτασσόμεναι (be subject) τοῖς (to the) ἰδίοις (own) ἀνδράσιν (husbands), ἵνα (so that), καὶ (even) εἴ (if) τινες (any) ἀπειθοῦσιν (are disobedient) τῷ (to the) λόγῳ (word), διὰ (by) τῆς (the) τῶν (of the) γυναικῶν (wives) ἀναστροφῆς (conduct), ἄνευ (without) λόγου (word), κερδηθήσονται (they will be won over),
2 ἐποπτεύσαντες (having witnessed) τὴν (the) ἐν (in) φόβῳ (respect) ἁγνὴν (pure) ἀναστροφὴν (conduct) ὑμῶν (of you),
3 ὧν (whose) ἔστω (let it be) οὐχ (not) ὁ (the) ἔξωθεν (external) ἐμπλοκῆς (of braiding) τριχῶν (of hair) καὶ (and) περιθέσεως (putting around) χρυσίων (of gold), ἢ (or) ἐνδύσεως (putting on) ἱματίων (of garments) κόσμος (adorning),
4 ἀλλ’ (but) ὁ (the) κρυπτὸς (hidden) τῆς (of the) καρδίας (heart) ἄνθρωπος (man), ἐν (in) τῷ (the) ἀφθάρτῳ (imperishable) τοῦ (of the) πραέως (gentle) καὶ (and) ἡσυχίου (quiet) πνεύματος (spirit), ὅ (which) ἐστιν (is) ἐνώπιον (before) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (God) πολυτελές (of great worth).
5 Οὕτως (In this way) γάρ (for) ποτε (formerly) καὶ (also) αἱ (the) ἅγιαι (holy) γυναῖκες (women) αἱ (-) ἐλπίζουσαι (hoping) εἰς (in) Θεὸν (God) ἐκόσμουν (used to adorn) ἑαυτάς (themselves), ὑποτασσόμεναι (being subject) τοῖς (to the) ἰδίοις (own) ἀνδράσιν (husbands),
6 ὡς (as) Σάρρα (Sarah) ὑπήκουσεν (obeyed) τῷ (-) Ἀβραάμ (Abraham), κύριον (lord) αὐτὸν (him) καλοῦσα (calling), ἧς (of whom) ἐγενήθητε (you have become) τέκνα (children), ἀγαθοποιοῦσαι (doing good) καὶ (and) μὴ (not) φοβούμεναι (fearing) μηδεμίαν (not one) πτόησιν (consternation).
7 Οἱ (-) ἄνδρες (Husbands) ὁμοίως (likewise), συνοικοῦντες (dwelling with them) κατὰ (according to) γνῶσιν (knowledge), ὡς (as) ἀσθενεστέρῳ (with a weaker) σκεύει (vessel) τῷ (with the) γυναικείῳ (female), ἀπονέμοντες (rendering) τιμήν (honor), ὡς (as) καὶ (also) συνκληρονόμοις (joint-heirs) χάριτος (of the grace) ζωῆς (of life), εἰς (so as for) τὸ (-) μὴ (not) ἐνκόπτεσθαι (to be hindered) τὰς (the) προσευχὰς (prayers) ὑμῶν (of you).
8 Τὸ (-) δὲ (Now) τέλος (the end): πάντες (All be) ὁμόφρονες (single-minded), συμπαθεῖς (sympathetic), φιλάδελφοι (loving as brothers), εὔσπλαγχνοι (tender-hearted), ταπεινόφρονες (humble),
9 μὴ (not) ἀποδιδόντες (repaying) κακὸν (evil) ἀντὶ (for) κακοῦ (evil) ἢ (or) λοιδορίαν (insult) ἀντὶ (for) λοιδορίας (insult); τοὐναντίον (on the contrary) δὲ (however), εὐλογοῦντες (blessing), ὅτι (because) εἰς (to) τοῦτο (this) ἐκλήθητε (you were called), ἵνα (so that) εὐλογίαν (blessing) κληρονομήσητε (you should inherit).
10 “Ὁ (The one) γὰρ (for) θέλων (desiring) ζωὴν (life) ἀγαπᾶν (to love), καὶ (and) ἰδεῖν (to see) ἡμέρας (days) ἀγαθὰς (good), παυσάτω (let him keep) τὴν (the) γλῶσσαν (tongue) ἀπὸ (from) κακοῦ (evil), καὶ (and) χείλη (lips) τοῦ (-) μὴ (not) λαλῆσαι (to speak) δόλον (deceit).
11 ἐκκλινάτω (Let him turn away) δὲ (also) ἀπὸ (from) κακοῦ (evil), καὶ (and) ποιησάτω (let him do) ἀγαθόν (good). ζητησάτω (Let him seek) εἰρήνην (peace) καὶ (and) διωξάτω (let him pursue) αὐτήν (it).
12 ὅτι (Because) ὀφθαλμοὶ (the eyes) Κυρίου (of the Lord) ἐπὶ (are on) δικαίους (the righteous), καὶ (and) ὦτα (the ears) αὐτοῦ (of Him) εἰς (toward) δέησιν (prayer) αὐτῶν (of them). πρόσωπον (The face) δὲ (however) Κυρίου (of the Lord) ἐπὶ (is against) ποιοῦντας (those doing) κακά (evil).”
13 Καὶ (And) τίς (who is) ὁ (he who) κακώσων (will harm) ὑμᾶς (you), ἐὰν (if) τοῦ (for that which is) ἀγαθοῦ (good), ζηλωταὶ (zealous) γένησθε (you should be)?
14 Ἀλλ’ (But) εἰ (if) καὶ (even) πάσχοιτε (you should suffer) διὰ (because of) δικαιοσύνην (righteousness), μακάριοι (you are blessed). “Τὸν (-) δὲ (And) φόβον (the threats) αὐτῶν (of them) μὴ (not) φοβηθῆτε (you should be afraid of), μηδὲ (neither) ταραχθῆτε (should you be troubled).”
15 Κύριον (As Lord) δὲ (however), τὸν (-) Χριστὸν (Christ) ἁγιάσατε (sanctify) ἐν (in) ταῖς (the) καρδίαις (hearts) ὑμῶν (of you), ἕτοιμοι (ready) ἀεὶ (always) πρὸς (for) ἀπολογίαν (a defense) παντὶ (to everyone) τῷ (-) αἰτοῦντι (asking) ὑμᾶς (you) λόγον (an account) περὶ (concerning) τῆς (the) ἐν (in) ὑμῖν (you) ἐλπίδος (hope); ἀλλὰ (yet) μετὰ (with) πραΰτητος (gentleness) καὶ (and) φόβου (fear),
16 συνείδησιν (a conscience) ἔχοντες (having) ἀγαθήν (good), ἵνα (so that) ἐν (in) ᾧ (this) καταλαλεῖσθε (they might speak against you), καταισχυνθῶσιν (they shall be ashamed) οἱ (those) ἐπηρεάζοντες (reviling) ὑμῶν (your) τὴν (-) ἀγαθὴν (good) ἐν (in) Χριστῷ (Christ) ἀναστροφήν (manner of life).
17 κρεῖττον (It is better) γὰρ (for) ἀγαθοποιοῦντας (doing good) εἰ (if) θέλοι (wills it) τὸ (the) θέλημα (will) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), πάσχειν (to suffer), ἢ (than) κακοποιοῦντας (doing evil),
18 ὅτι (because) καὶ (also) Χριστὸς (Christ) ἅπαξ (once) περὶ (for) ἁμαρτιῶν (sins) ἔπαθεν* (suffered), δίκαιος (the righteous) ὑπὲρ (for) ἀδίκων (the unrighteous), ἵνα (so that) ὑμᾶς (you) προσαγάγῃ (He might bring) τῷ (-) Θεῷ (to God), θανατωθεὶς (having been put to death) μὲν (indeed) σαρκὶ (in the flesh), ζωοποιηθεὶς (having been made alive) δὲ (however) πνεύματι (in the spirit),
19 ἐν (in) ᾧ (which) καὶ (also) τοῖς (to the) ἐν (in) φυλακῇ (prison) πνεύμασιν (spirits), πορευθεὶς (having gone) ἐκήρυξεν (He preached),
20 ἀπειθήσασίν (having disobeyed) ποτε (at one time), ὅτε (when) ἀπεξεδέχετο (was waiting) ἡ (the) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) μακροθυμία (longsuffering) ἐν (in) ἡμέραις (the days) Νῶε (of Noah), κατασκευαζομένης (being prepared) κιβωτοῦ (of the ark), εἰς (in) ἣν (which) ὀλίγοι (a few) — τοῦτ’ (that) ἔστιν (is), ὀκτὼ (eight) ψυχαί (souls) — διεσώθησαν (were saved) δι’ (through) ὕδατος (water),
21 ὃ (which) καὶ (also) ὑμᾶς (you) ἀντίτυπον (prefigures) νῦν (now) σῴζει (saving) βάπτισμα (baptism), οὐ (not) σαρκὸς (of flesh) ἀπόθεσις (a putting away) ῥύπου (of the filth), ἀλλὰ (but) συνειδήσεως (of a conscience) ἀγαθῆς (good), ἐπερώτημα (the demand) εἰς (toward) Θεόν (God), δι’ (through) ἀναστάσεως (the resurrection) Ἰησοῦ (of Jesus) Χριστοῦ (Christ),
22 ὅς (who) ἐστιν (is) ἐν (at) δεξιᾷ (the right hand) [τοῦ] (-) Θεοῦ (of God), πορευθεὶς (having gone) εἰς (into) οὐρανόν (heaven), ὑποταγέντων (having been subjected) αὐτῷ (to Him) ἀγγέλων (angels) καὶ (and) ἐξουσιῶν (authorities) καὶ (and) δυνάμεων (powers).
