1 But when Sanballat heard that we were building the wall, he was angry, and was very indignant, and mocked the Jews. 2 And he spoke before his brothers and the army of Samaria and said, What are these feeble Jews doing? Will they fortify themselves? Will they sacrifice? Will they finish in a day? Will they revive the stones out of the heaps of rubbish, seeing they are burnt? 3 Now Tobiah the Ammonite was by him, and he said, "What they are building, if a fox climbed up it, he would break down their stone wall." 4 “Hear, our God; for we are despised. Turn back their reproach on their own head. Give them up for a plunder in a land of captivity. 5 and neither cover their perversity nor wipe away their sin from your face: for they vex you in front of the builders. 6 So we rebuilt the wall, and all of the wall was joined up to half its height. For the people had a heart to do it. 7 Now when Sanballat, Tobiah, the Arabs, the Ammonites, and the Ashdodites heard that the restoration of the walls of Jerusalem were going forward and the gaps were being closed, they were very angry. 8 So all of them plotted together to come fight against Jerusalem and to make trouble for it. 9 But we prayed to our God. We also set up guards day and night because of them. 10 Meanwhile, the people of Judah said, "The builders are tired and there's so much rubble that we can't reconstruct the wall!" 11 Our enemies said, "Before they notice or see us, we'll penetrate their midst, kill them, and stop the work!" 12 When the Jews who lived by them came, they said to us ten times from all places, “Wherever you turn, they will attack us.” 13 I stationed the people behind the deepest part of the wall in the open places according to their families, with their swords, spears, and bows. 14 And I looked, got up, and said to the nobles, prefects, and the rest of the people, "Do not be afraid of them. Remember the Lord, who is great and awesome, and fight for your brothers, your sons, your daughters, your wives, and your houses." 15 It happened when our enemies heard that their plan was known to us, that God had frustrated it, and we all returned to the wall—each to his work. 16 From that day on, half of my helpers engaged in the work while the other half kept spears, shields, bows, and armor ready. The senior officials backed all of the Judeans 17 who worked on the wall. Those who carried building materials worked with one hand, carrying a spear in the other. 18 Each of the builders had his sword tied to his side while building. And the man who sounded the trumpet was beside me. 19 I said to the leaders and the rest of the people: "The work is extensive and widely spaced and we are far away from one another on the wall. 20 Wherever you hear the sound of the trumpet, rally there to us. Our God will fight for us." 21 So we labored in the work. And half of them held the spears from the rising of the morning until the stars came out. 22 At the time I also said to the people, "Let each man and his servant spend the night inside Jerusalem, so that they will be a guard for us in the night and work in the day." 23 So neither I nor my brothers nor my young men nor the men of the guard who were behind me took off our clothes. Each one kept his weapon even in the water.

Judges 10:7-18

7 In his burning anger against Israel, he sold them into domination by the Philistines and the Ammonites, 8 They troubled and oppressed the Israelites that year. For eighteen years they oppressed all the Israelites that were beyond the Jordan in the land of the Amorites, which is in Gilead. 9 The Ammonites crossed the Jordan to fight also against Judah, Benjamin, and the house of Ephraim; and Israel was very distressed. 10 Then the Israelites cried out to the LORD, saying, "We have sinned against you; we have abandoned our God and served the Baals." 11 the LORD answered: "Did I free you from the Egyptians, the Amorites, the Ammonites, and the Philistines? 12 the Sidonians, the Amalekites and the Maonites oppress you? And ye cried to me, and I delivered you out of their hands. 13 Yet you have forsaken me, and served other gods: why I will deliver you no more. 14 "Go and cry out to the gods you have chosen! Let them save you in your time of trouble." 15 But the people of Israel said to the LORD: "We have sinned. Do to us what seems best to you, only please, save us today!" 16 When they put away their foreign gods and served the LORD, he brought Israel's misery to an end. 17 And the Ammonites were summoned, and they camped in Gilead. And the Israelites gathered and camped at Mizpah. 18 The people, the princes of Gilead, said one to another, Who will begin to fight against the Ammonites? He shall be head over all the inhabitants of Gilead.

Judges 11:12-40

12 Jephthah sent messengers to the king of Ammon. He said: "What do you have against us that you want to fight us? Why have you invaded our country?" 13 The king of Ammon answered Jephthah's messengers: "Because Israel took away our land when they came out of Egypt. They took land from the Arnon River to the Jabbok River and the Jordan River. Now you must give it back peacefully." 14 Jephthah sent messengers back to the king of Ammon. 15 and said to him, This is what Jephthah says: Israel didn't take away the land of Moab, nor the land of the Ammonites, 16 But when they came up out of Egypt, he walked through the desert to the Red Sea, and came into Cades. 17 then Israel sent messengers to the king of Edom, saying, ‘Please let me pass through your land;’ but the king of Edom didn’t listen. In the same way, he sent to the king of Moab, but he refused; so Israel stayed in Kadesh. 18 Then they traveled through the wilderness, went around the land of Edom and Moab, and came to the east side of the land of Moab, and they encamped beyond the Arnon; and they did not go into the territory of Moab because the Arnon was the border of Moab. 19 And Israel sent messengers to Sihon king of the Amorite, king of Hesbron, and Israel said to him, Let us pass through your land to our place. 20 But Sihon didn't trust Israel to pass through his territory, so he assembled his entire army, encamped in Jahaz, and fought against Israel. 21 And the LORD, the God of Israel delivered Sihon and all his people into the hand of Israel, and they struck them. So Israel possessed all the land of the Amorites, who lived in that country. 22 And all the coasts thereof from the Arnon to the Jaboc, and from the wilderness to the Jordan. 23 So now the LORD, the God of Israel has driven out the Amorites from before His people Israel, and should you take it over? 24 Do you not possess what Chemosh your god gave you to possess? Whoever the LORD our God has driven out before us, we will possess it. 25 "'Do you think you are better than Balak son of Zippor, king of Moab? Did he ever challenge Israel or fight with them? 26 "'Israel has occupied Heshbon and Aroer for three hundred years, and the towns around them, and all the cities on the banks of the Arnon River. Why did you not retake them during that time? 27 "'I have not done you any wrong. You are doing wrong to me by making war on me. the LORD is the judge. He will decide today between the Israelites and the Ammonites.'" 28 The king of Ammon paid no attention to this message from Jephthah. 29 And the Spirit of the LORD came upon Jephthah, and he passed through Gilead and Manasseh. He passed through Mizpah of Gilead, and from Mizpah of Gilead he passed through to the Ammonites. 30 And Jephthah made a vow to the LORD, and he said, "If indeed you will give the Ammonites into my hand, 31 whatever comes out from the doors of my house to meet me when I return safely from the Ammonites will be the LORD's, and I will offer it as a burnt offering." 32 Jephthah crossed the river to fight the Ammonites, and the LORD gave him victory. 33 And he defeated them with a very great blow, from Aroer as far as Minnith, twenty towns, up to Abel Keramim. And the Ammonites were subdued before the Israelites. 34 When Jephthah arrived at his home in Mizpah surprise! it was his daughter who came out to meet him, playing tambourines and dancing. She was his one and only child. Except for her, he had no other son or daughter. 35 When he saw her he tore his clothes and said, Alas my daughter! You have made me very sad and troubled, for I have made a vow to the LORD and I can't go back on it. 36 She said: "If you made a promise to the LORD, do what you said you would do to me, since the LORD has given you revenge on your enemies, the Ammonites." 37 Then she said to her father, Only do this for me: let me have two months to go away into the mountains with my friends, weeping for my sad fate. 38 So he said, "Go!" He sent her away for two months. She left with her friends and cried there on the mountains because she would never marry. 39 And the two months being expired, she returned to her father, and he did to her as he had vowed, and she knew no man. From thence came a fashion in Israel, and a custom has been kept: 40 that the daughters of Israel went yearly four days in a year to commemorate the daughter of Jephthah the Gileadite.

And David's servants came into the land of the sons of Ammon. 3 the Ammonite princes asked their master Hanun: "Do you think David is honoring your father because he sent men to comfort you? Perhaps David sent his men to explore the city, spy on it, and destroy it." 4 And Hanun took David's servants and shaved off half their beards, and cut off their garments in the middle, to their buttocks, and sent them away. 5 When they told David this, he sent to meet them, for the men were greatly ashamed. They are finishing the wall and repairing the foundation. 13 Now be it known to the king that if this city is built and the walls are finished, they will not pay tribute and toll, and the royal revenue will be reduced. 14 Now, since we eat the salt of the palace, and it is not right for us to see the king`s injury, therefore have we sent and informed the king; 15 that search may be made in the book of the records of your fathers. You will see in the book of the records, and know that this city is a rebellious city, and hurtful to kings and provinces, and that they have started rebellions within it in the past. Open your eyes, the LORD, and see. Hear the words of Sennacherib, which he has sent to defy the living God. 17 Of a truth, LORD, the kings of Assyria have laid waste the nations and their lands 18 and have thrown their gods into the fire; for they were no gods, but the work of men's hands, wood and stone, and they have destroyed them. 19 And now, O Lord our God, deliver us out of his hand, and all the kingdoms of the earth shall know that You alone are the Lord God.

They began to fight the Israelites as before, on the highways on the way to Bethel and Gibeah, and in the field, killing about thirty men of Israel. 32 The Benjamites said, We are defeating them as before. But the Israelites said, Let's retreat and draw them away from the city to the highways. 33 And all the men of Israel got up from their places and took up positions in Baal Tamar; and the ambush of Israel charged from their places, from the vicinity of Gibeah. 34 Ten thousand, specially chosen men, out of all Israel, attacked Gibeah, and the fighting was fierce. The Benjaminites did not realize they were about to be destroyed. 35 the LORD defeated Benjamin before Israel, and the Israelites destroyed twenty five thousand one hundred armed Benjamites that day. 36 Then the Benjamites saw that they were defeated, for the men of Israel had given way to Benjamin, trusting in the ambush which they had set against Gibeah. 37 The men in the ambush rushed into Gibeah, spread out and put all the city to the sword. 38 And the children of Israel had a signal of battle with the liers in wait, that they should send up a signal of smoke from the city. 39 So, when the men of Israel turned in the battle,—and, the Benjamites, began to smite and slay of the sons of Israel, about thirty men, for they said, Yea! they are, smitten, before us, as in the first battle, 40 But when the smoke began to go up out of the city, the Benjamites looked behind them and saw the whole city going up in smoke. 41 Then the men of Israel turned on them and the men of Benjamin were terrified, seeing that disaster had come on them. 42 So they fled before the men of Israel towards the wilderness, but they could not escape the battle, and the Israelites who came out of the cities destroyed them there. 43 They surrounded the Benjamites, chased them and ran them down as far as Gibeah toward the east. 44 Eighteen thousand valiant men of Benjamin fell. 45 They turned and fled toward the wilderness to the rock of Rimmon: and they killed on the highways five thousand men, and followed hard after them to Gidom, and struck down two thousand men. 46 So that day twenty-five thousand valiant fighters of Benjamin were killed. 47 But six hundred men turned and fled toward the wilderness to the rock of Rimmon, and stayed there four months. 48 The men of Israel went back to Benjamin and put to the sword everything in the towns, including the livestock, and anything they found. All the towns which they found they set on fire.

To this end, stay alert with all perseverance in your prayers for all the saints. 19 Pray also for me, that whenever I open my mouth, divine utterance may be given me, so that I will boldly make known the mystery of the gospel, 20 for which I am an ambassador in chains. Pray that I may proclaim it fearlessly, as I should.
