¹ Woe to those who decree unrighteous decrees, and to the writers who write oppressive decrees; ² to keep back the poor from judgment, and to steal justice from the poor of My people; that widows may be their prey; that they may rob orphans. ³ What will you do in the day of visitation, and in the desolation which will come from afar? To whom will you flee for help? Where will you leave your wealth? ⁴ so as not to kneel with the prisoners, or fall among the slain? For all this his anger is not turned away, but his hand is stretched out still. ⁵ Wo to Assur the rod of mine anger, and that rod in their hand, my wrath. ⁶ "I send him against a godless nation. I commission him against the people of my fury to capture booty and to seize plunder, and to trample them down like mud (clay) in the streets. ⁷ But this is not what is in his mind, and this is not his design; but his purpose is destruction, and the cutting off of more and more nations. ⁸ For he says, Are not my commanders all like kings? ⁹ Is not, Calno, like Carchemish? Is not, Hamath, like Arpad? Is not, Samaria, like Damascus? ¹⁰ As my hand has found the kingdoms of the idols, whose graven images excelled those of Jerusalem and of Samaria, ¹¹ shall I not do to Jerusalem and her idols as I have done to Samaria and her idols? ¹² And this shall happen: when the Lord has finished all his work against Mount Zion and Jerusalem, "I will punish the arrogance of the king of Assyria and his haughtiness." ¹³ For he has said, “By the strength of my hand I have done it, and by my wisdom; for I have understanding. I have removed the boundaries of the peoples, and have robbed their treasures. Like a valiant man I have brought down their rulers. ¹⁴ and my hand found, as a nest, the valuables of the people: and as one gathers abandoned eggs, I gathered all the earth; and no one flapped the wing or gaped the mouth or chirped. ¹⁵ Shall the axe boast itself against him who hews with it? Shall the saw magnify itself against him who wields it? As if a rod should wield those who lift it up, [or] as if a staff should lift up [him who is] not wood. ¹⁶ Therefore the Lord, the LORD of Armies, will send among his fat ones leanness; and under his glory a burning will be kindled like the burning of fire. ¹⁷ The Light of Israel will become a fire and his Holy One a flame. It will burn and consume his thorns and his briers in a single day! ¹⁸ It will completely destroy the splendor of his forests and fertile fields, as when a sick man wastes away. ¹⁹ And the remaining trees of his forests will be so few that a child could write them down. ²⁰ In that day the remnant of Israel, the survivors of the house of Jacob, will no longer rely on the one who defeated them. They will truly rely on the LORD, the Holy One of Israel. ²¹ A remnant will return— the remnant of Jacob—to the mighty God. ²² For though your people, Israel, are like the sand of the sea, only a remnant of them will return. A destruction is determined, overflowing with righteousness. ²³ The Sovereign Sovereign LORD Almighty, will carry out the complete destruction decreed upon the whole land. ²⁴ Therefore, this is what the Sovereign LORD Almighty, declares: "O my people who live in Zion, do not be afraid of the Assyrians. They beat you with a rod and lift up a club against you, as Egypt did. ²⁵ "Very soon my anger against you will end and my wrath will be directed to their destruction. ²⁶ "the LORD Almighty will stir up enemies against you as when he struck down Midian at the rock of Oreb. His wrath will come by way of the sea, as he did in Egypt. ²⁷ "In that day your burden will be lifted from your shoulders, their yoke from your neck; the yoke will be broken because you have grown so fat." ²⁸ They enter Aiath and they pass through Migron. They store supplies at Micmash. ²⁹ they pass over the passage: they take up their lodging at Geba; Ramah trembles; Gibah of Shaul flees. ³⁰ Lift up thy voice, O daughter of Gallim, attend, O Laisa, poor Anathoth. ³¹ Madmenah has fled; the people of Gebim take cover. ³² This day they will halt at Nob. They will shake their fist at the mount of the Daughter of Zion, at the hill of Jerusalem. ³³ Behold, the Sovereign Sovereign LORD Almighty will lop off the boughs with great power. The lofty trees will be cut down! The tall ones will be brought low. ³⁴ He will cut down the forest thickets with an ax. Lebanon will fall before the Mighty One.

¹³ Then the two men, scoundrels, came, sat opposite him, and the scoundrels witnessed against Naboth before the people, saying, "Naboth cursed God and the king," so they brought him outside of the city and stoned him with stones, and he died.

¹⁰ So the king removed his signet ring from his hand and gave it to Haman son of Hammedatha the Agagite, the enemy of the Jews. ¹¹ And the king said to Haman, Keep the money, and do with the nation what thou pleasest. ¹² Then on the thirteenth day of the first month, the king's scribes were summoned. They put in writing Haman's orders to all the king's captains and the rulers of every division of his kingdom and the chiefs of every people. It was to be for every division of the kingdom in the writing commonly used there, and to every people in the language which was theirs. It was signed in the name of King Ahasuerus and stamped with the king's ring. ¹³ Letters were sent by couriers to all the provinces of the king to destroy, to kill, and to annihilate all the Jews, both young and old, women and children, on one day, the thirteenth day of the month, that is Adar, and to plunder their goods.

² No, in your heart you plan injustices; in the land you weigh out the violence of your hands.

²⁰ Can wicked rulers be allied with you? They frame mischief by decree (the law). ²¹ They gather together against the righteous, condemning the innocent to death.

¹¹ Woe to the wicked. Disaster is upon them; for the work of his hands will be done to him.

⁸ Woe to those who join house to house, who lay field to field, till there is no room, and ye be made to dwell alone in the midst of the land!

¹¹ Woe to those who rise early in the morning to go after fermented drink, tarrying in the twilight while wine inflames them!

¹⁸ Woe to those who draw iniquity with cords of falsehood, and wickedness as with cart rope,

²⁰ Woe to those who call evil good, and good evil; who put darkness for light, and light for darkness; who put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter! ²¹ Woe to those who are wise in their own eyes, and prudent in their own sight! ²² Woe to those who are mighty to drink wine, and champions at mixing strong drink;

¹³ Woe to him who builds his house by unrighteousness and his upper rooms without justice; his neighbor serves without pay, and he does not give him for his work;

⁸ Now, O king, establish the decree, and sign the writing, that it not be changed, according to the law of the Medes and Persians, which cannot be changed." ⁹ Then King Darius commanded the decree to be written.

¹ I said, "Please listen, you heads of Jacob, and rulers of the house of Israel: Isn't it for you to know justice? ² you who despise good and love evil, who tear off the skin of my people, along with the flesh from their bones. ³ Who eat the flesh of my people? They strip their skin and they break their bones; and spread them as for the caldron and as flesh within the caldron. ⁴ "They will cry to the LORD but he will not answer them. In fact, he will hide his face from them at that time because they have done evil things."

⁹ Hear this, O rulers of the house of Jacob and leaders of the house of Israel, those detesting justice and perverting all that is right, ¹⁰ he who builds Zion with blood and Jerusalem with wickedness. ¹¹ Her leaders judge for bribes, and her priests teach for a price, and her prophets of it tell fortunes for money: yet they lean on the LORD, and say, “Isn’t the LORD among us? No disaster will come on us.”

¹⁶ For you have observed the regulations of Omri and all the works of the house of Ahab. And you have walked in their counsels, so that I am making you a desolation and your inhabitants an object of scorn. So you will bear the scorn of my people.

⁶ "Will not all of these ridicule him with mocking scorn? They will say, 'Woe to the one who hordes for himself what isn't his. How long will you enrich yourself by extortion?'

⁹ Woe to him who robs evil booty for his house, to set his nest on high, to be delivered from the hand of evil!

¹² "Woe to him who builds a town with bloodshed and establishes a city with iniquity!

¹⁵ "Woe to him who gives his neighbor drink, pouring your inflaming wine until they are drunk, so that you may gaze at their naked bodies.

¹⁹ Woe to him who says to the wood, 'Wake up!' And to a lifeless stone, 'Arise!' Can he teach? Look, it is covered with gold and silver, and there is no breath within it.

²¹ “Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the miracles that were performed in you had happened in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes.

¹³ Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You shut the kingdom of heaven in men’s faces. You yourselves do not enter, nor will you let in those who wish to enter.

¹⁵ Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You traverse land and sea to win a single convert, and when he becomes one, you make him twice as much a son of hell as you are. ¹⁶ Woe to you, blind guides! You say, ‘If anyone swears by the temple, it means nothing; but if anyone swears by the gold of the temple, he is bound by his oath.’

²³ Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You pay tithes of mint, dill, and cumin, but you have disregarded the weightier matters of the Law: justice, mercy, and faithfulness. You should have practiced the latter, without neglecting the former.

²⁷ Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You are like whitewashed tombs, which look beautiful on the outside, but on the inside are full of dead men’s bones and every impurity.

²⁹ Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You build tombs for the prophets and decorate the monuments of the righteous.

²⁴ The Son of Man will go just as it is written about Him, but woe to that man by whom He is betrayed. It would be better for him if he had not been born.”

⁴² Woe to you Pharisees! You pay tithes of mint and rue and every herb, but you disregard justice and the love of God. You should have practiced the latter without neglecting the former. ⁴³ Woe to you Pharisees! Because you love the first seat in the synagogues and greetings in the marketplaces. ⁴⁴ A curse on you, because you are like unmarked graves which men walk over without knowing it!"

⁴⁶ And he said, Woe to you also, lawyers! for you load men with burdens they can hardly carry, and you yourselves will not touch the burdens with one of your fingers. ⁴⁷ Woe to you! You build tombs for the prophets, but it was your fathers who killed them.

⁵² Woe to you experts in the law! For you have taken away the key to knowledge. You yourselves have not entered, and you have hindered those who were entering.”

²² His parents said this because they were afraid of the Jews, since the Jews had already agreed that anyone who acknowledged that Jesus was the Messiah would be thrown out of the synagogue.

⁶ When the high priests and the officials saw him, they shouted, "Crucify him! Crucify him!" Pilate told them, "You take him and crucify him. I find no basis for a charge against him."

¹¹ Woe to them! They have traveled the path of Cain; they have rushed headlong into the error of Balaam; they have perished in Korah’s rebellion.

²³ Your princes are rebels and companions of thieves. Every one loves a bribe and runs after gifts. They do not defend the orphan and the legal dispute of the widow does not come before them.

¹⁴ the LORD enters into judgment with the elders and princes of his people: "It is you who have devoured the vineyard. The plunder of the poor is in your houses.

⁷ For the vineyard of the LORD Almighty is the house of Israel, and the man of Judah is the plantation of his delight. And he waited for justice, but look! Bloodshed! For righteousness, but look! A cry of distress!

²³ who acquit the guilty for a bribe, but deny justice for the innocent!

²¹ those who make a man guilty by a word, and lay a trap for the reprover in the gate, and turn aside the just for a worthless thing.

⁶ if you do not oppress the foreigner, the fatherless, and the widow, and do not shed innocent blood in this place, neither walk after other gods to your own hurt:

³⁵ to turn aside the cause of man from before the Most High.

⁷ In you have they treated father and mother with contempt. Among you they have oppressed the foreigner. In you they have wronged the fatherless and the widow.

⁷ they trample on the dust of the earth on the head of the poor, and deny justice to the oppressed; and a man and his father use the same girl, to profane My holy name;

¹¹ Forasmuch therefore as you trample on the poor, and take taxes of wheat from him- therefore you who have built houses of cut stone will not dwell in them. You who have planted pleasant vineyards shall not drink their wine. ¹² For I know how many are your offences, and how great are your sins-- you who afflict the just, who take a bribe, and who turn aside the needy in the courts.

⁵ I will come near to you to judgment; and I will be a swift witness against the sorcerers, and against the adulterers, and against the perjurers, and against those who oppress the hireling in his wages, the widow, and the fatherless, and who deprive the foreigner of justice, and do not fear me," says the LORD of hosts.

¹³ Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You shut the kingdom of heaven in men’s faces. You yourselves do not enter, nor will you let in those who wish to enter.

¹ Jacob heard Laban's sons' words, saying, “Jacob has taken away all that was our father's. He has obtained all this wealth from that which was our father's.”

⁴⁹ "the LORD will bring a nation against you from far away, from the end of the earth, as the eagle swoops down, a nation whose language you will not understand,

⁶ The LORD had made the Assyrian army hear the sounds of chariots, horses, and a large army, so they told one another, "Look! The king of Israel has hired the kings of the Hittites and the Egyptians to come attack us!" ⁷ And they rose up and fled in the dusk, and left their tents, and their horses, and their asses, the camp as it was, and fled for their life. ⁸ And these lepers came to the edge of the camp, and came into one tent, and ate and drank, and took up from there silver and gold and garments, and went and hid them. And they returned and went into another tent, and took from there, and went and hid them .

¹⁵ They went out in the direction of the Jordan River, and the entire roadway was strewn with clothes and equipment that the Assyrians had abandoned in their haste to leave! So the messengers returned and reported to the king.

¹⁴ what then will I do when God rises up? When he visits, what will I answer him?

¹⁶ Do not be afraid when one becomes rich, when the glory of his house increases; ¹⁷ For he shall take nothing when he dies; neither shall his glory descend with him.

⁴ Wealth cannot profit on the day of wrath; but righteousness deliver from death.

²⁰ For on that day men will cast to the bats their abominations both of silver and gold, which they made to worship vanities; ²¹ They will go into caves in the rocks and into cracks in the cliffs because of the LORD's terrifying presence and the honor of his majesty when he rises to shake the earth.

¹⁴ Therefore hell has enlarged its desire and opened its mouth without ceasing: and her glorious and great, and her rich and her pestilent men shall go down into it.

²⁶ He will lift up a banner to the nations from far, and he will whistle for them from the end of the earth. Look, they will come speedily and swiftly.

⁶ "That day the people who live on this coast will say: 'See what has happened to those we relied on, those we fled to for help and deliverance from the king of Assyria! How then can we escape?"'

²¹ Behold! the LORD is coming out of his dwelling to punish the people of the earth for their sins. The earth will disclose (reveal) the bloodshed upon her. She will conceal her slain no longer.

¹ "Woe to the rebellious children," says the LORD, "who take counsel, but not from me; and who make an alliance, but not with my Spirit, that they may add sin to sin, ² They are setting out to go down to Egypt, without having consulted me; to be assisted by Pharao and protected by the Egyptians. ³ For the protection by Pharaoh will be to you for shame, and the ones relying upon Egypt for scorn.

¹⁶ and you said, "No! For we will flee on horses!" Therefore you shall flee! And, "We will ride on swift horses!" Therefore your pursuers shall be swift!

²⁷ Behold, the name of the LORD comes from far, burning with His anger, and uplifting of smoke; His lips are full of fury, and His tongue like a devouring fire. ²⁸ His breath is like an overflowing stream. It raises neck high and sifts the nations with a sieve of destruction. It places a bit in the mouths of the people to lead them astray.

¹ Woe to those who go down to Egypt for help and rely on horses and trust in chariots because they are many and in horsemen because they are very strong, but they do not look to the Holy One of Israel, nor seek the LORD! ² Yet he also is wise, and will bring disaster, and will not call back his words, but will arise against the house of the evildoers, and against those who help evildoers. ³ Now the Egyptians are men, and not God; and their horses flesh, and not spirit. When the LORD stretches out his hand, both he who helps shall stumble, and he who is helped shall fall, and they all shall be consumed together.

¹⁴ The sinners in Zion are terrified. The godless tremble. Who of us can dwell with the consuming fire? Who of us can dwell with long lasting fire?

³ Isaiah the prophet went to King Hezekiah and asked: "What did those men say, and where did they come from?" Hezekiah replied: "They came from the distant land of Babylon."

⁶ "'The time will come when everything in your palace, and all that your fathers have stored up until this day, will be carried off to Babylon. Nothing will be left,' says the LORD. ⁷ "'Some of your descendants, your own flesh and blood who will be born to you, will be taken away! They will become officers in the palace of the king of Babylon.'"

³¹ "The prophets prophesy falsely, the priests rule by their own authority, and my people love it this way. But what will you do in the end?

¹³ In your uncleanness is obscene conduct, because I cleansed you, but you were not clean from your uncleanness; you will not be clean again until ⌊I fully vent my rage⌋ on you. ¹⁴ I the LORD have spoken. It shall come, and I will do it. I will not let go, nor will I spare, nor will I repent. According to your ways, and according to your doings, they shall judge you, says the Sovereign LORD.

¹³ When Ephraim saw his disease and Judah his wound, then Ephraim went to Assyria and sent to the great king; but he is not able to make you well or give you help for your wound.

⁷ The days of visitation are come, the days of recompense are come, Israel shall know it. The prophet is a fool, the man of the spirit is mad! For the multitude of thine iniquity, the enmity is great.

¹⁸ Neither their silver nor their gold will be able to deliver them in the day of the LORD's wrath, but the whole land will be devoured by the fire of his jealousy; for he will make an end, yes, a terrible end, of all those who dwell in the land.

⁴⁴ They will level you to the ground—you and the children within your walls. They will not leave one stone on another, because you did not recognize the time of your visitation from God.”

¹² Conduct yourselves with such honor among the Gentiles that, though they slander you as evildoers, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day He visits us.

¹⁵ Then the kings of the earth, the nobles, the commanders, the rich, the mighty, and every slave and free man, hid in the caves and among the rocks of the mountains. ¹⁶ They told the mountains and the rocks, "Fall on us, and hide us from the face of him who sits on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb,

¹⁷ I will set my face against you, and you will be struck before your enemies. Those who hate you will rule over you; and you will flee when no one pursues you.

³⁶ "'As for those of you who are left, I will send a faintness into their hearts in the lands of their enemies: and the sound of a driven leaf will put them to flight; and they shall flee, as one flees from the sword; and they will fall when no one pursues. ³⁷ They will stumble over one another, as it were before the sword, when no one pursues: and you will have no power to stand before your enemies.

¹⁵ And the LORD appeared at the tent in the pillar of cloud; and the pillar of cloud stood over the entrance to the tent. ¹⁶ And the Lord said to Moses, Now you are going to rest with your fathers; and this people will be false to me, uniting themselves to the strange gods of the land where they are going; they will be turned away from me and will not keep the agreement I have made with them. ¹⁷ Then my anger will be kindled against them in that day and I will forsake them and I will hide my face from them and they will be devoured and many evils and troubles will come upon them, so that they will say in that day, Have not these evils come upon us because our God is not among us? ¹⁸ But I will certainly hide my face on that day, because of all of the evil that they did because they turned to other gods.

³⁰ How could one chase a thousand, and two put ten thousand to flight, unless their Rock had sold them, and the LORD had delivered them up?

²⁵ Therefore the LORD's anger burns against his people, and he has stretched out his hand against them, and has struck them. The mountains tremble, and their dead bodies are as refuse in the midst of the streets. For all this, his anger is not turned away, but his hand is still stretched out.

¹² The Arameans from the east and the Philistines from the west have devoured Israel with open mouth. For all this his anger has not turned away. His hand (power) is still stretched out (extended).

¹⁷ Therefore the Lord will have no joy in their young men, neither will have mercy on their fatherless and widows: for every one is a hypocrite and an evil-doer, and every mouth speaketh folly. For all this his anger is not turned away, but his hand is stretched out still.

²¹ Manasseh, Ephraim and Ephraim, Manasseh and together they will be against Judah. For all this his anger is not turned away, but his hand is stretched out still.

² You are a town full of commotion, a city of tumult and revelry. The sword did not kill your slain, nor did they die in battle.

²² And they will be gathered in a gathering, like a prisoner in a pit. And they will be shut in a prison and be punished after many days.

³ Their slain also will be cast out. And the stench of their dead bodies will come up and the mountains will be melted with their blood.

¹⁶ For by fire and by His sword the LORD will execute judgment with all flesh; and the slain of the LORD will be many.

¹⁰ "Even if you would defeat the entire Babylonian army so that they had only a few badly wounded men left in their tents, they would get up and burn down this city!"’"

¹² Even if they rear their children, I will, in turn, make them childless in fact, woe to them when I turn away from them!

¹¹ From that land he went to Assyria, where he built Nineveh, Rehoboth-Ir, Calah,

¹⁴ from men by your hand, Yahweh, from men of the world, whose portion is in this life. You fill the belly of your cherished ones. Your sons have plenty, and they store up wealth for their children.

³ For the scepter of wickedness won't remain over the allotment of the righteous; so that the righteous won't use their hands to do evil.

⁴ "Before the boy knows how to say "Father" or "Mother" the wealth of Damascus and the loot from Samaria will be carried away to the king of Assyria."

⁵ They come from a distant land, from the end of the heavens, the LORD and the weapons of His wrath, to destroy all the land.

⁵ The LORD has broken the staff of the wicked, the scepter of the rulers, ⁶ He whose rod was on the peoples with an unending wrath, ruling the nations in passion, with an uncontrolled rule.

²⁵ To break Assur in my land, and upon my mountain I will tread him down: and his yoke was removed from off them, and his burden shall remove from off their shoulder.

³⁰ And the LORD shall make the majesty of His voice heard; and He shows His arm coming down with raging anger and flame of consuming fire, cloudburst and storm, and hailstones.

¹⁴ When you see it, your heart will rejoice and you will flourish like new grass. The power of the LORD will be made known to his servants, but he will condemn his enemies.

²⁰ You are My war club and weapons of war, for with you I will shatter nations and with you I will destroy kingdoms. ²¹ and with you, I shatter the horse and his rider; and with you, I shatter the chariot and his rider; ²² and with you, I shatter man and woman; and with you, I shatter aged and lad; and with you, I shatter the youth and the virgin; ²³ I'll smash the shepherd and his flock with you. I'll smash the farmer and his team of oxen with you. I'll smash governors and officials with you. ²⁴ "Before your eyes I'll repay Babylon and all the inhabitants of Chaldea for all the evil that they did in Zion," declares the LORD.

¹³ And He will stretch out His hand against the north, and destroy Assyria, and will make Nineveh a desolation, dry like the desert.

⁴³ I beat them small as the dust of the earth; I trampled them like the dirt of highways.

²⁹ They roar like a lioness. They growl like a young lion. They growl as they snatch their prey and carry it off to where no one can rescue it.

¹⁹ By the wrath of the Lord of hosts the land is troubled, and the people shall be as fuel for the fire: no man shall spare his brother.

¹³ For he has said, “By the strength of my hand I have done it, and by my wisdom; for I have understanding. I have removed the boundaries of the peoples, and have robbed their treasures. Like a valiant man I have brought down their rulers. ¹⁴ and my hand found, as a nest, the valuables of the people: and as one gathers abandoned eggs, I gathered all the earth; and no one flapped the wing or gaped the mouth or chirped.

¹⁷ And the land of Judah will become a terror to Egypt, everyone to whom one mentions it will be afraid in himself because of the plan of the LORD Almighty that he is planning against him.

⁵ The Sovereign LORD Almighty has a day of tumult, trampling and terror in the Valley of Vision. It is a day of battering down walls and of crying out to the mountains.

¹³ And so the LORD declares, "These people draw near to me with their mouths, and honor me with their lips, but their hearts remain distant from me. Their fear of me consists of commands dictated by men.

⁹ These people are rebellious and deceitful children. They refuse to listen to the LORD's Law. ¹⁰ That say to the seers: 'See not,' and to the prophets: 'Prophesy not unto us right things, speak unto us smooth things, prophesy delusions; ¹¹ Remove from the way, turn aside from the path, cause to cease from before us the Holy One of Israel.

²⁶ "Have you not heard? Long ago I ordained it. In days of old I planned it! And now I have brought it to pass, that you have turned fortified cities into piles of stone. ²⁷ "Their people are drained of power. They are dismayed and put to shame. They are like plants in the field, like tender green shoots, like grass sprouting on the roof, parched before it grows.

²⁵ "I have stirred up one from the north, and he comes! One from the rising sun calls on my name. He treads on rulers as if they were mortar, as if he were a potter treading the clay.

¹ Thus says the LORD to his anointed, to Cyrus, whose right hand I have held, to subdue nations before him, and strip kings of their armor; to open the doors before him, and the gates shall not be shut: ² "I myself will go before you, and I will level the mountains. I will break the doors of bronze and cut throughthe bars of iron. ³ And I will give you the treasures of darkness, even treasures in secret places, that you may know that I am the LORD, who calls you by your name, the God of Israel. ⁴ "For the sake of my servant Jacob, and Israel my chosen one, I have called you by name. I have given you a title of honor, although you do not know me. ⁵ I am the LORD, and there is no other. Besides me, there is no God. I will strengthen you, though you have not known me;

³ “I have trodden the wine press alone. Of the peoples, no one was with me. Yes, I trod them in my anger and trampled them in my wrath. Their lifeblood is sprinkled on my garments, and I have stained all my clothing.

⁶ "In my wrath I trampled on people. In my rage I made them drunk and poured their blood on the ground."

¹⁰ Yet even in all this her treacherous sister Judah did not return to me with all her heart, but only in pretense," declares the LORD.

¹⁴ "O Jerusalem, wash the evil from your heart so that you may be saved. How long will your wicked thoughts lodge within you?

⁹ I'm now sending for all the tribes from the north, declares the LORD, and for my servant Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon. I'll bring them against this land, against its inhabitants, and against all these surrounding nations. I'll utterly destroy them and make them an object of horror and scorn, and an everlasting desolation.

²² "'I am going to give a command,' declares the LORD. 'I will bring that army back to this city to attack it, capture it, and burn it down. I will destroy the cities of Judah so that no one will live there.'"

⁶ O you sword of the LORD, how long will you be quiet? Put up yourself into your scabbard. Rest and be still. ⁷ How can it be quiet, since the LORD has given it a command? He has set it there against Ashkelon, and against the seashore.

¹⁰ And my hater will see it and be covered with shame; she who said to me, Where is the Lord your God? my eyes will see their desire effected on her, now she will be crushed under foot like the dust of the streets.

⁵ And they will be like warriors, trampling in the mud of the streets in the battle. They will fight, because the LORD is with them, and they will put to shame the riders on horses.

⁷ You hypocrites! Isaiah prophesied correctly about you:

²⁰ Ye thought evil unto me: but God turned it unto good to bring to pass, as it is this day, even to save much people alive.

¹⁸ lest Hezekiah mislead you, saying, 'the LORD will save us!' Did the gods of the nations each save his land from the hand of the king of Assyria? ¹⁹ Where are the gods of Hamath and Arpad? Where are the gods of Sepharvaim? Have they delivered Samaria from my hand? ²⁰ Who among all the gods of these lands who delivered their land from my hand, that the LORD will deliver Jerusalem from my hand?

¹¹ »‘You have heard what the kings of Assyria have done to all the countries. He destroyed them completely. And will you be delivered? ¹² "'Did the gods of the nations that were destroyed by my forefathers deliver them? And what about the gods of Gozan, Haran, Rezeph and the people of Eden who were in Tel Assar? ¹³ "'Where is the king of Hamath, the king of Arpad, the king of the city of Sepharvaim, or of Hena or Ivvah?'"

¹¹ Now also many nations are gathered against you, who say, Let her be defiled, and let our eyes look on Zion. ¹² But they do not know the thoughts of the LORD, and they do not understand his plan, that he has gathered them as sheaves to his threshing floor.

²³ He was handed over by God’s set plan and foreknowledge, and you, by the hands of the lawless, put Him to death by nailing Him to the cross.

²⁷ The people of Jerusalem and their rulers did not recognize Jesus, yet in condemning Him they fulfilled the words of the prophets that are read every Sabbath. ²⁸ Though they found no ground for a death sentence, they asked Pilate to have him executed. ²⁹ When they had carried out all that was written about him, they took him down from the tree and laid him in a tomb. ³⁰ But God raised him from the dead,

²⁴ How can you refuse even one official from the least of my master's servants and rely on Egypt for chariots and horsemen?

¹⁰ 'Tell Hezekiah king of Judah this: “Don't let your God in whom you trust deceive you, saying, Jerusalem will not be given into the hand of the king of Assyria.

⁸ »Now, make a deal with my master, the king of Assyria. I will give you two thousand horses if you can put riders on them.

⁷ For thus says the Sovereign LORD: Behold, I will bring on Tyre Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, king of kings, from the north, with horses, with chariots, with horsemen and a company, and many people.

³⁷ You, O king, are a king of kings: for the God of heaven has given you a kingdom, power, and strength, and glory.

¹⁰ The first centers of his kingdom were Babylon, Erech, Accad, and Calneh, in Shinar.

⁹ When Toi king of Hamath heard that David had defeated all the armies of Hadadezer,

⁹ The king of Assyria, in answer to his request, went up against Damascus and captured it. He took its people away as prisoners to Kir, and put Rezin to death.

⁵ Then the king of Assyria invaded the land and advanced to Samaria. He besieged the city for three years. ⁶ In the ninth year of Hoshea, the king of Assyria captured Samaria. He led the Israelites away to Assyria. He stationed them in Halah and Habor on the Gozan River, and in the towns of the Medes.

²⁴ Because the king of Assyria brought captives from Babylon, Cuthah, Avva, Hamath, and Sephar-vaim and settled them in the cities of Samaria to replace the Israelites, the settlers possessed Samaria and lived in its cities.

⁹ It was the fourth year of King Hezekiah, the seventh year of Hoshea son of Elah king of Israel. Shalmaneser king of Assyria came up against Samaria and laid siege to it. ¹⁰ And at the end of three years they took it. Samaria was taken in the sixth year of Hezekiah, which was the ninth year of Hoshea king of Israel.

²⁰ After all this, when Josiah had prepared the temple, Necho king of Egypt came up to fight at Carchemish on the Euphrates: and Josiah went out against him.

⁸ "'"Because the head of Aram is Damascus, and the head of Damascus is only Rezin. Within sixty-five years Ephraim will be too shattered to be a people.

³ And the fortified city will disappear from Ephraim, and the kingdom from Damascus; and the remnant of Aram will be like the glory of the children of Israel," declares the LORD Almighty.

¹⁹ Where are the gods of Hamath and Arpad? Where are the gods of Sepharvaim? Have they delivered Samaria from my hand?

¹³ "'Where is the king of Hamath, the king of Arpad, the king of the city of Sepharvaim, or of Hena or Ivvah?'"

² To Egypt against the army of Pharaoh-Necho, king of Egypt, that was upon the river Phrath in Carchemish, which Nebuchadnezzar king of Babel smote in the fourth year to Jehoiakim son of Josiah, king of Judah.

²³ Concerning Damascus: Hamath and Arpad are put to shame, for they have heard bad news. They are melted; anxiety is in the sea; it cannot be quiet.

¹ Woe to those who are at ease in Zion, and to those who are secure on the mountain of Samaria, the notable men of the foremost of nations, to whom the house of Israel come. ² Cross to Calneh and see; and from there go to the great Hamath; then go down to Gath of the Philistines. Are they better than these kingdoms, or their border than your border?

³³ Has any of the gods of the nations ever delivered his land out of the hand of the king of Assyria? ³⁴ Where are the gods of Hamath and Arpad? Where are the gods of Sepharvaim, Hena, and Ivvah? For did they rescue Samaria from my hand? ³⁵ Who among all the gods of these lands has delivered their land from my control, so that the LORD should deliver Jerusalem from me?"'"

¹² "'Did the gods of the nations that my ancestors destroyed rescue Gozan, Haran, Rezeph, and the people of Eden who were in Telassar? ¹³ Where is the king of Hamath, the king of Arpad, the king of the city of Sepharvaim, of Hena, and Ivah?

¹⁷ Of a truth, LORD, the kings of Assyria have laid waste the nations and their lands ¹⁸ and have thrown their gods into the fire; for they were no gods, but the work of men's hands, wood and stone, and they have destroyed them. ¹⁹ And now, O Lord our God, deliver us out of his hand, and all the kingdoms of the earth shall know that You alone are the Lord God.

¹² Has not this same Hezekiah taken away his high places and his altars, saying to Judah and Jerusalem, Give worship before one altar only, burning offerings on it? ¹³ Do you not know what I and my fathers have done to all the peoples of the lands? Were the gods of the nations of the lands in any way able to deliver their land out of my hand? ¹⁴ Who from all the gods of these nations that my fathers utterly destroyed, which were able to deliver his people from my hand, that your God shall be able to deliver you from my hand? ¹⁵ And now, do not let Hezekiah deceive you, nor persuade you in this way, nor believe him, for no god of any nation or kingdom has been able to deliver his people from my hand, from the hand of my fathers; also, surely your god shall not deliver you from my hand. ¹⁶ Sennacherib's officers said more against the LORD God and his servant Hezekiah.

¹⁹ And they spoke of the God of Jerusalem as of the gods of the peoples of the earth, the work of man`s hand.

¹⁴ and my hand found, as a nest, the valuables of the people: and as one gathers abandoned eggs, I gathered all the earth; and no one flapped the wing or gaped the mouth or chirped.

⁸ Their land is full of idols. They worship the work of their own hands, that which their own fingers have made.

¹⁰ "Say to Hezekiah king of Judah: 'Do not let your God in whom you trust deceive you. He says to you: "Jerusalem will not be given into the hand of the king of Assyria."

³¹ For out of Jerusalem shall go forth a remnant, and out of Mount Zion they that shall escape; the zeal of the LORD Almighty shall do this.

¹¹ "Unleash the fury of your wrath, look at every proud man and bring him low! ¹² "Look at every proud man and humble him, crush the wicked where they stand.

²⁷ You save humble people, but you humiliate the proud.

¹⁰ You will destroy their descendants from the earth, their posterity from among the children of men.

¹⁰ Surely the wrath of man praises you. The survivors of your wrath are restrained.

¹³ A generation, whose eyes are lofty, and their eyelids lifted up on high.

¹¹ The lofty looks of man shall be humbled, and the pride of men shall be bowed down, and the LORD alone shall be exalted in that day.

¹⁵ So man is brought low, mankind is humbled, and the eyes of the arrogant ones are humbled;

⁹ All the people will know it. Ephraim and the inhabitants of Samaria who say with pride and arrogance of heart:

⁵ Wo to Assur the rod of mine anger, and that rod in their hand, my wrath. ⁶ "I send him against a godless nation. I commission him against the people of my fury to capture booty and to seize plunder, and to trample them down like mud (clay) in the streets.

¹⁶ Therefore the Lord, the LORD of Armies, will send among his fat ones leanness; and under his glory a burning will be kindled like the burning of fire. ¹⁷ The Light of Israel will become a fire and his Holy One a flame. It will burn and consume his thorns and his briers in a single day! ¹⁸ It will completely destroy the splendor of his forests and fertile fields, as when a sick man wastes away. ¹⁹ And the remaining trees of his forests will be so few that a child could write them down.

²⁵ "Very soon my anger against you will end and my wrath will be directed to their destruction. ²⁶ "the LORD Almighty will stir up enemies against you as when he struck down Midian at the rock of Oreb. His wrath will come by way of the sea, as he did in Egypt. ²⁷ "In that day your burden will be lifted from your shoulders, their yoke from your neck; the yoke will be broken because you have grown so fat." ²⁸ They enter Aiath and they pass through Migron. They store supplies at Micmash. ²⁹ they pass over the passage: they take up their lodging at Geba; Ramah trembles; Gibah of Shaul flees. ³⁰ Lift up thy voice, O daughter of Gallim, attend, O Laisa, poor Anathoth. ³¹ Madmenah has fled; the people of Gebim take cover. ³² This day they will halt at Nob. They will shake their fist at the mount of the Daughter of Zion, at the hill of Jerusalem. ³³ Behold, the Sovereign Sovereign LORD Almighty will lop off the boughs with great power. The lofty trees will be cut down! The tall ones will be brought low. ³⁴ He will cut down the forest thickets with an ax. Lebanon will fall before the Mighty One.

²⁴ the LORD Almighty has sworn, saying, Surely as I have thought, so it shall come to pass; and as I have purposed, it shall stand; ²⁵ To break Assur in my land, and upon my mountain I will tread him down: and his yoke was removed from off them, and his burden shall remove from off their shoulder. ²⁶ This is the plan that is determined for the whole earth. This is the hand that is stretched out over all the nations. ²⁷ For the LORD Almighty has purposed, and who shall reverse it? And His hand is stretched out, and who shall turn it back?

¹² Ah! The noise of many peoples, they make a noise like the noise of the seas! And the roar of nations, they roar like the roar of mighty waters! ¹³ The nations roar like the roar of many waters, but he will rebuke him, and he will flee far away. And they are chased like chaff of the mountains before the wind and like tumbleweed before the storm. ¹⁴ In the evening, sudden terror! Before the morning, they are gone! This is the portion of those who loot us, the lot of those who rob us.

⁹ By this Jacob's guilt will be atoned for, and this will be the full fruitage of the removal of his sin. When he makes all the altar stones to be like chalk stones crushed to pieces, no Asherah poles or incense altars will be left standing.

²¹ For the LORD shall rise up, as at Mount Perazim; He shall be stirred as in the Gibeon Valley; to do His work, His strange work; and to perform His task, His alien task. ²² And now you must not scoff, or your bonds will be strong, for I have heard from the Lord, the LORD Almighty: complete destruction decreed upon all the land.

⁷ The multitude of all the nations that fight against Ariel, even all who fight against her and her stronghold, and who distress her, will be like a dream, a vision of the night. ⁸ And it will be as when a hungry man dreams, and behold, he eats. But he awakes and his soul is empty. Or as when a thirsty man dreams, and behold, he drinks. But he awakes, and behold, he is faint and his soul has appetite. So will the multitude of all the nations be that fight against Mount Zion.

³⁰ And the LORD shall make the majesty of His voice heard; and He shows His arm coming down with raging anger and flame of consuming fire, cloudburst and storm, and hailstones. ³¹ For from the voice of the LORD shall Assur be broken down, he will smite with a rod. ³² And every stroke of the appointed staff, which the LORD will lay upon him, will be with the sound of tambourine and harps. And he will fight with them in battles with the brandishing of his arm. ³³ For a place of fire has long been ready; yes, it has been made ready for the king; he has made it deep and wide: it is massed with fire and much wood; the breath of the Lord, like a stream of fire, puts a light to it.

⁵ Like birds flying overhead, so the LORD Almighty will protect Jerusalem; he will protect and deliver it; he will pass over and rescue it. ⁶ Return as you had deeply revolted, O children of Israel. ⁷ When that day comes, all of you will reject the worthless gods of silver and gold, the idols that your sinful hands have made. ⁸ And Assyria shall fall by a sword not of a man, and a sword not of a human shall devour him; and he shall flee from the sword, and his young men shall be put to forced labor. ⁹ And his rock will pass away because of terror and his rulers will be dismayed at the ensign, says the LORD, whose fire is in Zion and his furnace in Jerusalem.

³⁶ The angel of the LORD put to death a hundred and eighty-five thousand men in the Assyrian camp. The people got up the next morning and saw all the dead bodies! ³⁷ So Sennacherib king of Assyria broke camp and withdrew. He returned to Nineveh and stayed there. ³⁸ One day, while he was worshiping in the temple of his god Nisroch, his sons Adrammelech and Sharezer cut him down with the sword. They escaped to the land of Ararat. Esarhaddon his son succeeded him as king.

¹⁰ "I make known the end from the beginning, from ancient times, what is still to come. I say: 'My purpose will stand, and I will do all that I please.' ¹¹ I summon a bird of prey from the east. I summon a man to fulfill my purpose from a far off land. What I have said I will bring about. What I have determined (purposed) I will do.

¹¹ But all of you light fires and arm yourselves with flaming torches. So walk in your own light and among the torches you have lit. This is what you will receive from me: You will be tormented.

⁷ both your sins and the sins of your fathers, says the LORD. This is because they burned sacrifices on the mountains and defied me on the hills. I will measure into their laps the full payment for their former deeds."

¹⁸ "This is what the LORD Almighty, the God of Israel, says: 'I am going to punish the king of Babylon and his land as I punished the king of Assyria.

¹⁰ “Therefore thus said the Sovereign LORD: 'Because you are exalted in stature, and he has set his top among the thick boughs, and his heart is lifted up in his height;

¹⁴ so that all the trees by the waters may not be exalted in their stature, nor set their top among the clouds, nor their well-watered mighty ones stand erect in their height. For they have all been given over to death, to the earth beneath, among the sons of men, with those who go down to the pit.'

³⁷ Now I Nebuchadnezzar praise and exalt and honor the King of heaven, all whose works are truth and His ways judgment. And those who walk in pride He is able to humble.

³³ Make a tree good and its fruit will be good, or make a tree bad and its fruit will be bad; for a tree is known by its fruit.

¹⁹ For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false testimony, and slander.

¹⁷ For it is time for judgment to begin with the family of God; and if it begins with us, what will the outcome be for those who disobey the gospel of God?

¹⁷ Say not then, in your hearts, My power and the strength of my hands have got me this wealth.

²⁹ In the days of Pekah king of Israel, Tiglath Pileser king of Assyria came and took Ijon, Abel Beth Maacah, Janoah, Kedesh, Hazor, Gilead, and Galilee, all the land of Naphtali; and he carried them captive to Assyria.

⁸ And Ahaz took the silver and gold that was found in the house of the LORD, and in the treasures of the king's house, and sent it for a present to the king of Assyria.

⁶ In the ninth year of Hoshea, the king of Assyria captured Samaria. He led the Israelites away to Assyria. He stationed them in Halah and Habor on the Gozan River, and in the towns of the Medes.

¹¹ Then the king of Assyria deported Israel to Assyria and settled them in Halah, in Habor, in the river regions of Gozan, and in the cities of the Medes,

¹⁵ Hezekiah gave him all the silver that was found in the house of the LORD, and in the treasures of the king's house.

³² Until I come and take you to a land like your land, a land of grain and new wine, a land of bread and vineyards, a land of olive trees, olive oil, and honey, that you may live and not die! You must not listen to Hezekiah, for he has misled you by saying, "the LORD will deliver us!"

²² Whom have you defied and blasphemed? Against whom have you exalted your voice and lifted up your eyes on high? Against the Holy One of Israel! ²³ By your messengers you have insulted the LORD. You have claimed, "With my many chariots I ascended the heights of the mountains, including the remotest regions of Lebanon; I cut down its tall cedars and the best of its cypress trees. I entered its most remote lodging place and its most fruitful forest. ²⁴ I have dug and drunk foreign waters, and with the sole of my feet I have dried up all the rivers of Egypt.

²⁶ So the God of Israel stirred up the spirit of Pul king of Assyria (that is, Tiglath-Pileser king of Assyria), who took the Reubenites, the Gadites and the half-tribe of Manasseh into exile. He took them to Halah, Habor, Hara and the river of Gozan, where they are to this day.

⁸ For he says, Are not my commanders all like kings?

²³ "Who is it you have insulted and blasphemed? Against whom have you raised your voice and lifted your eyes in pride? It is against the Holy One of Israel! ²⁴ "By your messengers you have heaped insults on the LORD. You said: With my many chariots I have ascended the heights of the mountains, the utmost heights of Lebanon. I cut down its tallest cedars, the choicest of its pines. I reach its remotest heights, the finest of its forests. ²⁵ "I dug wells and drank the water there. With the bottom of my feet I dried up all the streams of Egypt.

³ "Tell the Ammonites: 'Hear the word of the Sovereign LORD! The Sovereign LORD says: "Because you said, Aha! Against My sanctuary when it was profaned, and against the land of Israel when it was made desolate, and against the house of Judah when they went into exile,

² Son of man, because Tyre hath said of Jerusalem: Aha, the gates of the people are broken, she is turned to me: I shall be filled, now she is laid waste.

² "Son of man, tell the ruler of Tyre: 'This is what the Sovereign LORD says: "'"In your arrogance you say, 'I am a god (strong deity). I sit on God's throne in the sea.' But you are only human and not a god, although you think you are a god. (2 Thes 2:4) ³ Look, are you wiser than Daniel, so that no secret is hidden from you? ⁴ By your wisdom and by your understanding You have made for you wealth, And make gold and silver in your treasuries." ⁵ By thy great skill and thy traffic thou hast increased thy wealth; and with thy wealth thy heart is elated; ⁶ Therefore thus says the Sovereign LORD: Because you have set your heart as the heart of God, ⁷ '"I will bring strangers, ruthless nations, upon you. They will draw their swords against the beauty of your wisdom and defile your splendor. ⁸ They will thrust you down to the pit, and you will die a violent death in the heart of the seas. ⁹ '"You will no longer say that you are a god when you face those who kill you. You will be a human, not a god, in the hands of those who kill you."'

³ Speak and say, Thus said the Sovereign LORD: Behold me against thee Pharaoh, king of Egypt, the great sea-monster lying in the midst of his rivers, who said, The, river is to me, and I made me.

³⁰ The king spoke: "Is this not great Babylon, which I have built for the royal dwelling-place, by the might of my power and for the glory of my majesty?"

¹⁵ Though he is fruitful among his brothers, an east wind will come, the breath of Yahweh coming up from the wilderness; and his spring will become dry, and his fountain will be dried up. He will plunder the storehouse of treasure. ¹⁶ Samaria will be guilty, because she has rebelled against her God; they will fall by the sword, their children will be dashed to pieces, and their pregnant women will be ripped open.

²⁷ Therefore I will cause you to go into captivity beyond Damascus," says the LORD, whose name is the God of hosts.

¹³ you who rejoice in a thing of nothing, who say, Have we not taken to us horns by our own strength?

¹⁶ Therefore he sacrifices to his net, and burns incense to his dragnet, because by them his life is luxurious, and his food is good.

²⁵ If I have rejoiced over my great riches, and because my hand had gotten much.

¹² Before shattering, a man's heart is haughty, but humility goes before honor.

⁶ A fortune gained by deceit is a fleeting vapor and a deadly snare. ⁷ The violence of the wicked will drive them away, because they refuse to do what is right.

¹⁶ Your terror has deceived you, the pride of your heart, O you who dwell in the clefts of the rock, you who seize the height of the hill. Though you make your nest high like the eagle, from there I will bring you down," declares the LORD.

⁷ A merchant has dishonest scales in his hand. He loves to defraud. ⁸ Ephraim said, "Surely I have become rich, I have found myself wealth. In all my wealth they won't find in me any iniquity that is sin."

⁴ Even if you soar like the eagle, even if your nest is set among the stars, from there I will bring you down!" declares the LORD:

⁹ Plunder the silver, plunder the gold; for there is no end of the splendid store of all precious vessels.

⁵ Yes, moreover, wine is treacherous: an arrogant man who doesn’t stay at home, who enlarges his desire as Sheol; he is like death, and can’t be satisfied, but gathers to himself all nations, and heaps to himself all peoples. ⁶ "Will not all of these ridicule him with mocking scorn? They will say, 'Woe to the one who hordes for himself what isn't his. How long will you enrich yourself by extortion?' ⁷ Won’t your debtors rise up suddenly, and wake up those who make you tremble, and you will be their victim? ⁸ Because you have plundered many nations, all the nations that are left shall plunder you, because of the blood of men, and the sins of the land and city, and of all that dwell in it. ⁹ Woe to him who robs evil booty for his house, to set his nest on high, to be delivered from the hand of evil! ¹⁰ You have plotted shame for your house, cutting off many peoples and sinning against your life. ¹¹ For the stone from the wall shall cry out, and the cross-beam from the wood shall answer it.

¹³ Arise, O LORD, confront him, cast him down: deliver my soul from the wicked, by your sword: ¹⁴ from men by your hand, Yahweh, from men of the world, whose portion is in this life. You fill the belly of your cherished ones. Your sons have plenty, and they store up wealth for their children.

⁵ Wo to Assur the rod of mine anger, and that rod in their hand, my wrath.

¹⁶ You turn things upside down. Should the potter be thought to be like clay; that the thing made should say about him who made it, "He did not make me;" or the thing formed say of him who formed it, "He has no understanding?"

⁹ Woe to him who fights with the One who formed him! A potsherd among the potsherds of the earth! Shall the clay say to its former, What are you making? Or does your work say, He has no hands?

²⁰ You are My war club and weapons of war, for with you I will shatter nations and with you I will destroy kingdoms. ²¹ and with you, I shatter the horse and his rider; and with you, I shatter the chariot and his rider; ²² and with you, I shatter man and woman; and with you, I shatter aged and lad; and with you, I shatter the youth and the virgin; ²³ I'll smash the shepherd and his flock with you. I'll smash the farmer and his team of oxen with you. I'll smash governors and officials with you.

⁹ '"You will no longer say that you are a god when you face those who kill you. You will be a human, not a god, in the hands of those who kill you."'

²⁰ But who are you, O man, to talk back to God? Shall what is formed say to Him who formed it, “Why have you made me like this?” ²¹ Does not the potter have the right to make from the same lump of clay one vessel for noble use, and another for common use?

²¹ The LORD sent an angel, who cut off all the mighty men of valor, and the leaders and captains, in the camp of the king of Assyria. So he returned with shame of face to his own land. When he had come into the house of his god, some of his own offspring killed him there with the sword.

¹⁵ And he gave them their request, but sent a wasting disease into their souls.

¹⁷ Then the lambs will graze as in their pasture, and kids will eat the ruins of the rich.

⁷ now therefore, behold, the Lord brings upon them the mighty flood waters of the River: the king of Assyria and all his glory. It will come up over all its channels, and go over all its banks.

⁵ Every warrior's boot used in battle and every garment rolled in blood will be destined for burning, will be fuel for the fire.

¹⁸ It will completely destroy the splendor of his forests and fertile fields, as when a sick man wastes away.

⁴ And it was in that day the glory of Jacob shall be feeble, and the fatness of his flesh shall waste away.

⁵ »Your cruel enemies will be swept away like dust in a windstorm. It will be sudden and unexpected like chaff in the wind. ⁶ She shall be visited by LORD of hosts with thunder, and with earthquake, and great noise, with whirlwind and tempest, and the flame of a devouring fire.

¹⁰ Now will I rise!saying is the LORD. "Now will I be exalted! Now will I be lifted up!" ¹¹ You will conceive chaff. You will give birth to stubble. Your breath is a fire that will devour you. ¹² "The peoples will be burned as if to lime. Like thorn bushes they will be set ablaze. ¹³ You who are far away, hear what I have done; and you who are near, know my might!" ¹⁴ The sinners in Zion are terrified. The godless tremble. Who of us can dwell with the consuming fire? Who of us can dwell with long lasting fire?

⁶ Isaiah said to them, "Tell your master, 'Thus says the LORD, "Do not be afraid of the words that you have heard, with which the servants of the king of Assyria have blasphemed me. ⁷ Look! I am about to put a spirit in him so that he shall hear a rumor and he shall return to his land, and I will cause him to fall by the sword in his land." '"

²⁹ "For the reason that you rage against me and because your insolence (arrogance) has reached my ears, I will put my hook in your nose and my bit in your mouth. I will make you return by the way you came."

³⁶ The angel of the LORD put to death a hundred and eighty-five thousand men in the Assyrian camp. The people got up the next morning and saw all the dead bodies!

²³ Immediately, because Herod did not give glory to God, an angel of the Lord struck him down, and he was eaten by worms and died.

¹ Now the people complained about hunger speaking evil in the ears of the LORD, so that when the LORD heard it, his anger flared and the fire of the LORD burned against them and even consumed the outskirts of the camp. ² Then the people cried out to Moses, and Moses prayed to the LORD, and the fire died down. ³ That place was called Taberah (Fire) because fire from the LORD burned among them there.

³⁵ And fire came forth from the LORD and consumed the two hundred and fifty men that offered the incense.

⁸ Smoke went up from his nostrils. A raging fire came out of his mouth. Glowing coals were kindled by it.

⁹ When you appear, you will set them ablaze like a fire furnace. In his wrath, the LORD will consume them, and the fire will devour them.

¹ The LORD is my light and my salvation. Whom shall I fear? The LORD is the stronghold of my life. Of whom shall I be afraid?

³ Our God comes, and does not keep silent. A fire devours before him. It is very stormy around him.

¹⁴ As a fire burneth a forest,—And as a flame setteth mountains ablaze, ¹⁵ so pursue them with your tempest, and terrify them with your storm.

¹¹ For the LORD God is a sun and shield; the LORD will give grace and glory; no good thing will He withhold from those who walk uprightly.

³ A fire goes before him, and burns up his adversaries on every side.

¹⁸ For wickedness burns like a fire, it devours the briers and thorns; yes, it kindles in the thickets of the forest, and they roll upward in a column of smoke.

⁴ "I am not angry. If only there were briers and thorns confronting me! I would march against them in battle. I would set them all on fire.

⁹ And his rock will pass away because of terror and his rulers will be dismayed at the ensign, says the LORD, whose fire is in Zion and his furnace in Jerusalem.

²³ "Who is it you have insulted and blasphemed? Against whom have you raised your voice and lifted your eyes in pride? It is against the Holy One of Israel!

¹⁹ The sun will be no more your light by day; nor will the brightness of the moon give light to you, but the LORD will be your everlasting light, and your God will be your glory.

¹ Oh that You would tear the heavens and come down, that mountains would quake before You. ² Be like the fire that kindles brushwood and makes water boil. Come down to make your name known to your enemies. The nations may tremble in your presence.

¹⁵ For behold, the LORD will come with fire, and his chariots like a whirlwind, to render his anger with fury, and his rebuke with flames of fire. ¹⁶ For by fire and by His sword the LORD will execute judgment with all flesh; and the slain of the LORD will be many.

²⁴ “They will go out, and look at the dead bodies of the men who have transgressed against me; for their worm will not die, nor will their fire be quenched, and they will be loathsome to all mankind.”

⁴ Circumcise yourselves to the LORD and remove the foreskin of your heart, you men of Judah and residents of Jerusalem, or else my wrath will break out like fire and burn with no one to put it out, because of your evil deeds."

²⁰ Therefore the Sovereign LORD says: "My anger and my wrath will be poured out on this place, on man and on beast, on the trees of the field and on the fruit of the ground. It will burn and not be quenched."

⁵ The mountains quake before him, and the hills melt away. The earth trembles at his presence, yes, the world, and all who dwell in it. ⁶ His indignation—who can stand before it? Who can endure his fierce anger? His wrath is poured out like fire; rocks are shattered before him.

¹⁰ Entangled like thorns and drunken from drink, they are consumed like dry stubble.

¹ "For look! The day is about to come, burning like an oven, and all the arrogant and every evildoer will be stubble. The coming day will consume them," says the LORD of hosts. "It will not leave behind for them root or branch. ² But for you who revere my name, the sun of righteousness will rise, with healing in its wings, and you will go out and leap like fattened calves. ³ You will trample down the wicked, for they will be ashes under the soles of your feet on the day that I am going to act," says the LORD of hosts.

¹² His winnowing fork is in his hand, and he will clear his threshing floor and gather his wheat into the barn, but the chaff he will burn up with unquenchable fire."

⁷ and to grant relief to you who are oppressed, and to us as well, when the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven with His mighty angels ⁸ Taking vengeance on those who do not know God, and who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ. ⁹ who will be punished with everlasting destruction proceeding from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of his power,

²⁹ for our God is a consuming fire.

²³ The city does not need the sun nor the moon to shine in it, for the glory of God lighted it, and the Lamb is its lamp.

⁵ And there will be no more night. They will not need the light of a lamp or the light of the sun, for the Lord God will give them light; and they will reign for ever and ever.

²³ By your messengers you have insulted the LORD. You have claimed, "With my many chariots I ascended the heights of the mountains, including the remotest regions of Lebanon; I cut down its tall cedars and the best of its cypress trees. I entered its most remote lodging place and its most fruitful forest.

²⁸ Because your wrath against me and your words of pride have come up to my ears, I will put my hook in your nose and my cord in your lips, and I will make you go back by the way you came.

¹⁴ But I'll punish you according to what you have done," declares the LORD. "I'll start a fire in her forest, and it will consume everything around her."'"

⁴⁷ And say to the forest of the South, Hear the word of the LORD. The Sovereign LORD says thus: Behold, I will kindle a fire in you and it will devour every green tree in you and every dry tree. The flaming flame will not be quenched and all faces from the south to the north will be burnt by it. ⁴⁸ All flesh will see that I, the LORD, have kindled it. It will not be quenched.”'”

¹⁷ "The survivors of the bowmen, the warriors of Kedar, will be few." the LORD, the God of Israel, has spoken!

⁷ So Ahaz sent messengers to Tiglath Pileser king of Assyria, saying, "I am your servant and your son. Come up, and save me out of the hand of the king of Syria, and out of the hand of the king of Israel, who rise up against me."

²⁰ Tilgath Pilneser king of Assyria came to him, and gave him trouble, but didn't strengthen him.

¹⁴ Shall we again break your commandments and intermarry with the peoples who practice these detestable things? Would you not be angry with us until you destroy us with no remnant or remainder?

⁹ Unless the LORD of hosts had left us a few survivors, we would have been as Sodom, and we would have been like Gomorrah.

² On that day the branch of the LORD shall become beautiful and glorious, and the fruit of the land shall become the pride and glory of the survivors of Israel. ³ It will come about that he who is left in Zion and remains in Jerusalem will be called holy along with everyone who is recorded among the living in Jerusalem.

¹³ If there is a tenth left in it, that also will in turn be consumed, as a terebinth, and as an oak, whose stump remains when they are cut down; so the holy seed is its stock.”

¹¹ It will happen in that day that the Lord will set his hand again the second time to recover the remnant that is left of his people from Assyria, from Egypt, from Pathros, from Cush, from Elam, from Shinar, from Hamath, and from the islands of the sea.

⁷ In that day men will look to their maker and their eyes will have respect for the Holy One of Israel. ⁸ He will not be looking to the altars, the work of his hands, or to the wood pillars or to the sun-images which his fingers have made.

³ You will keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on you: because he trusts in you. ⁴ "Trust in the LORD forever, for Jah, the LORD, is the Rock eternal.

⁴ "'Perhaps the LORD your God will hear the words of Rabshakeh. His master the king of Assyria has sent him to reproach the living God! He will rebuke the words the LORD your God has heard. Therefore, offer a prayer for the remnant that survives.'"

³¹ »‘Again a remnant of the house of Judah will take root below and bear fruit above. ³² "'Out of Jerusalem will come a remnant, and out of Mount Zion a band of survivors. The zeal of the Sovereign LORD will accomplish this.

¹ Hear this, house of Jacob, who are called by the name of Israel and came out from the waters of Judah, who swear by the name of the LORD, and invoke the God of Israel, but not in truth and not in righteousness. ² for they call themselves citizens of the holy city, and rely on the God of Israel; the LORD of Armies is his name.

¹⁰ Who among you fears the LORD, who obeys the voice of His servant, who walks in darkness and has no light? Let him trust in the name of the LORD and rest on his God.

³ Assyria shall not save us; we will not ride on horses. We shall not say any more to the work of our hands, Our gods! For in You the fatherless finds mercy.

²⁷ Isaiah cries out concerning Israel: “Though the number of the Israelites is like the sand of the sea, only the remnant will be saved. ²⁸ For the Lord will carry out his sentence on the earth with speed and finality." ²⁹ It is just as Isaiah predicted: “Unless the Lord of Hosts had left us descendants, we would have become like Sodom, we would have resembled Gomorrah.”

³ Then the LORD said to Isaiah, "Go out to meet Ahaz, you and Shear-Jashub your son, at the end of the conduit of the upper pool on the highway of the washer's field.

⁶ For to us a child is born. To us a son is given; and the government will be on his shoulders. His name will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

¹³ Yet the people have not turned to him who killed them, nor have they sought the LORD Almighty.

²² The LORD will strike Egypt, striking and healing. They will return to the LORD, and he will listen to their pleas, and will heal them.

⁷ Let the wicked forsake his way and the evil man his thoughts. Let him turn to the LORD, and he will have mercy on him, and to our God, for he will freely pardon.

⁸ the LORD says: "As when juice is still found in a cluster of grapes and men say, 'Do not destroy it, there is yet some good in it,' so will I do in behalf of my servants; I will not destroy them all. ⁹ I will bring forth offspring from Jacob, and from Judah those who will possess my mountains. My chosen people will inherit them and my servants will live there.

¹ "Come, and let us return to the LORD; for he has torn us to pieces, and he will heal us; he has injured us, and he will bind up our wounds.

¹⁰ Israel's arrogance testifies against him; but they do not return to the LORD their God, nor seek him in all of this.

¹⁶ They return, but not to the Most High. They are like a faulty bow. Their leaders will fall by the sword for the rage of their tongue. This will be their derision in the land of Egypt.

¹ "Return, Israel, to the LORD your God, for you have fallen due to your own iniquity.

²⁰ but to those in Damascus first, and in Jerusalem and all the region of Judea and to the Gentiles, I proclaimed that they should repent and turn to God, doing deeds worthy of repentance.

¹⁴ But their minds were closed. For to this day the same veil remains at the reading of the old covenant. It has not been lifted, because only in Christ can it be removed. ¹⁵ And even to this day when Moses is read, a veil covers their hearts. ¹⁶ But whenever anyone turns to the Lord, the veil is taken away.

²⁵ Far be it from you to do such a thing as this, to kill the righteous with the wicked, that the righteous would be as the wicked! Far be it from you! Will not the Judge of all the earth do justice?"

²⁰ The people of Judah and Israel were as numerous as the grains of sand on the seashore. They ate and drank and were very happy.

¹¹ Then I said: "How long, O LORD? And He answered: "Until the cities are laid waste and without inhabitant, until the houses are deserted and the land is utterly desolate.

⁸ and it will sweep onward into Judah. It will overflow and pass through; it will reach even to the neck. And the stretching out of its wings will fill the breadth of your land, O Immanuel.

¹⁰ The fortified city stands desolate, abandoned settlements, forsaken like the desert. There the calves will graze, there they lie down; they strip its branches bare. ¹¹ When its twigs are dry, they are broken off and women come and make fires with them. For they have no understanding (discernment). Their Maker has no compassion on them, and their Creator shows them no favor.

¹⁵ Because ye have said, “We have entered into a covenant with death, and with the nether world have we made an agreement; the overflowing scourge, when it passeth by, shall not come at us; for we have made lies our refuge, and under falsehood have we sought a hiding-place.” ¹⁶ Therefore the Sovereign LORD says this: "Look! I am laying a stone in Zion, a tested stone, a precious cornerstone, a founded foundation: 'The one who trusts will not panic.' ¹⁷ I will make justice the measuring line, and righteousness the plumb line. The hail will sweep away the refuge of lies, and the waters will overflow the hiding place. ¹⁸ "Your covenant with death will be annulled. Your agreement with the grave will not stand when the overflowing scourge passes through. Then you will be trampled down by it. ¹⁹ As often as it passes through, it will take you, for morning by morning it will pass through, in the day and in the night, and understanding the message will be only terror." ²⁰ For the bed is too short to stretch out on, and the blanket is too narrow to wrap oneself in.

²⁷ And he shall confirm a covenant with the many for one week. And in the middle of the week he shall cause the sacrifice and the offering to cease. And on a wing of the altar will be abominations that desolate, even until the end. And that which was decreed shall pour out on the desolator.

¹⁰ The number of the children of Israel will be like the sand of the sea that cannot be measured or counted; and in the place where it is said to them, "You are not my people," it will be said to them, "Children of the living God."

³¹ For He has set a day when He will judge the world with justice by the Man He has appointed. He has given proof of this to all men by raising Him from the dead.”

⁵ But because of your hard and unrepentant heart, you are storing up wrath against yourself for the day of wrath, when God’s righteous judgment will be revealed.

⁵ But if our unrighteousness highlights the righteousness of God, what shall we say? That God is unjust to inflict His wrath on us? I am speaking in human terms. ⁶ Certainly not! For then how could God judge the world?

²⁷ Isaiah cries out concerning Israel: “Though the number of the Israelites is like the sand of the sea, only the remnant will be saved. ²⁸ For the Lord will carry out his sentence on the earth with speed and finality."

⁵ So too at the present time there is a remnant, chosen by grace. ⁶ And if it is by grace, then it is no longer by works. Otherwise, grace would no longer be grace.

⁸ and will go out to deceive the nations in the four corners of the earth, Gog and Magog, to assemble them for battle. Their number is like the sand of the seashore.

¹ the LORD lays the earth waste, annihilates it, disfigures its surface and scatters its inhabitants. ² And it comes to be, as people, so priest, as servant, so his lord, as maid, so her mistress, as buyer, so seller, as borrowee, so borrower, as lender, so him to whom is lent." ³ The earth will be completely uninhabitable and totally plundered. the LORD has spoken this word. ⁴ The earth mourns and withers; the world languishes and withers; the high people of the earth languish: ⁵ The earth also is polluted under its inhabitants, because they have transgressed the laws, violated the statutes, and broken the everlasting covenant. ⁶ Therefore a curse devours the earth, and the inhabitants in it suffer for their guilt. Therefore the inhabitants of the earth burn, and few men are left. ⁷ The new wine dries up; the vine languishes. All the merry of heart sigh; ⁸ the joy of the tambourine has stopped. The noise of the jubilant has ceased; the joy of the lyre has stopped. ⁹ They no longer drink wine with a song. The beverage is bitter to its drinkers. ¹⁰ The ruined city lies desolate. The entrance to every house is barred and none may enter. ¹¹ In the streets they cry out for wine. Joy turns to gloom and rejoicing is banished from the earth. ¹² The city is left in ruins; its gate is battered to pieces. ¹³ So will it be on the earth and among the nations, as when an olive tree is beaten, or as when gleanings are left after the grape harvest. ¹⁴ They raise their voices and shout for joy. From the west they acclaim the LORD's majesty. ¹⁵ Therefore in the east give glory to the LORD. Exalt the name of the LORD the God of Israel, in the islands of the sea. ¹⁶ From the uttermost part of the earth have we heard songs: 'Glory to the righteous.' But I say: I waste away, I waste away, woe is me! The treacherous deal treacherously; yea, the treacherous deal very treacherously. ¹⁷ Terror and traps and snares will be your lot, you people of the earth. ¹⁸ And it comes that the one fleeing from the awful sound shall fall into the pit. And the ascender from the midst of the pit shall be seized in a snare. For the crevices of the heights are opened, and the foundations of the earth shall quake." ¹⁹ The earth is utterly broken, the earth is rent asunder, the earth is shaken violently. ²⁰ The earth reels to and fro like a drunkard and it quakes like a shack in the wind. Its transgression is heavy upon it, and it will fall, never to rise again. ²¹ That day the LORD will punish the host of heaven on high and the kings of the earth below. ²² And they will be gathered in a gathering, like a prisoner in a pit. And they will be shut in a prison and be punished after many days. ²³ Then the moon will be abashed and the sun ashamed, For the LORD Almighty will reign on Mount Zion and in Jerusalem, And his glory will be before his elders.

²² And now you must not scoff, or your bonds will be strong, for I have heard from the Lord, the LORD Almighty: complete destruction decreed upon all the land.

³⁵ And all the people of the earth are as nothing: he does his pleasure in the army of heaven and among the people of the earth: and no one is able to keep back his hand, or say to him, What are you doing?

²⁸ For the Lord will carry out his sentence on the earth with speed and finality."

¹⁰ Come on, let's be careful how we treat them, so that when they grow numerous, if a war breaks out they won't join our enemies, fight against us, and leave our land." ¹¹ So the Egyptians put slave masters over them in order to oppress them through forced labor. They built Pithom and Rameses as supply (storage) cities for Pharaoh. ¹² But the more they vexed them, the more they multiplied and grew: so that they abhorred the children of Israel. ¹³ They forced the Israelites to work hard as slaves. ¹⁴ and they made their lives bitter with hard labor, in mortar and in brick, and in all manner of labor in the field, all their labors which they ruthlessly made them do. ¹⁵ The king of Egypt spoke to the Hebrew midwives. Shiphrah and Puah were among them. ¹⁶ "When you help the Hebrew women give birth," he said, "watch them as they deliver. If it's a son, kill him; but if it's a daughter, let her live."

¹⁴ The officers of the children of Israel, whom Pharaoh's taskmasters had set over them, were beaten, and were asked, “Why haven't you fulfilled your quota both yesterday and today, in making brick as before?”

⁹ The Egyptians pursued them. All the horses and chariots of Pharaoh, his horsemen, and his army overtook them encamping by the sea, beside Pihahiroth, before Baal Zephon.

²¹ Moses stretched out his hand over the sea. the LORD swept the sea back by a strong east wind all night and turned the sea into dry land. The waters were divided. ²² The Israelites went through the middle of the sea on dry ground. The water stood like a wall on their right and on their left. ²³ The Egyptians pursued them. Pharaoh's horses, chariots, and cavalry followed them into the sea. ²⁴ Just before dawn, the LORD looked down from the column of fire and smoke and threw the Egyptian camp into a panic. ²⁵ He made the wheels of their chariots wobble so that they drove them with difficulty. The Egyptians said, "Let's flee from Israel because the LORD is fighting for them and against us." ²⁶ And the LORD said to Moses, Stretch out your hand over the sea, that the waters may come again on the Egyptians, on their chariots, and on their horsemen. ²⁷ Moses held out his hand over the sea. At daybreak the water returned to its normal level. The Egyptians tried to escape from the water. But the LORD threw them into the sea. ²⁸ The water returned and covered the chariots, the drivers, and all the Egyptian army that had followed the Israelites into the sea. None of them were left. ²⁹ On the other hand, the Israelites walked through the sea on dry ground, with walls of water on both sides. ³⁰ On that day the LORD delivered Israel from the hand of the Egyptians, and Israel saw the Egyptians dead along the seashore. ³¹ And Israel saw the great hand that the LORD displayed against Egypt, and the people feared the LORD, and they believed in the LORD and in Moses his servant.

⁶ Your right hand, LORD, was majestic in strength, your right hand, LORD, shattered the enemy. ⁷ In the greatness of your majesty you broke down your enemies. You sent forth your anger, it consumed them like stubble. ⁸ By the breath of your nostrils the waters were piled up, the flowing waters stood up like a hill, the deep waters congealed in the heart of the sea. ⁹ The enemy said, I will pursue, I will overtake, I will divide the spoil; my soul shall be filled with them; I will draw my sword; my hand will destroy them. ¹⁰ You blew with your breath, and the sea covered them; they sank like lead in the mighty waters.

⁵ Yes, of Zion it will be said, "This one and that one was born in her;" the Most High himself will establish her. ⁶ The LORD shall count in the register of the peoples: 'This one was born there.' Selah

³ It will come about that he who is left in Zion and remains in Jerusalem will be called holy along with everyone who is recorded among the living in Jerusalem.

¹² Do not say, A conspiracy, to everything of which this people says, A conspiracy! And do not fear its fear, and do not dread. ¹³ The LORD of hosts is who you must regard as holy. He is the one you must fear. He is the one you must dread.

⁴ As in the day of Midian's defeat, you have shattered the yoke of his burdens: the bar across their shoulders, the rod of their oppressor.

⁶ "Shout aloud and sing for joy, people of Zion, for great is the Holy One of Israel among you."

²⁹ You must not rejoice, all you Philistines, that the rod that struck you is broken, for a viper will come forth from the root of the snake, and its fruit will be a flying serpent.

⁷ Has the LORD struck her as he struck down those who struck her? Has she been killed as those were killed who killed her?

¹⁹ You will live in Zion, in Jerusalem. You will not cry anymore. the LORD will certainly have pity on you when you cry for help. As soon as he hears you, he will answer you.

¹⁴ The sinners in Zion are terrified. The godless tremble. Who of us can dwell with the consuming fire? Who of us can dwell with long lasting fire? ¹⁵ He who walks righteously and speaks what is right, who rejects gain from extortion and keeps his hand from accepting bribes, who stops his ears against plots of murder and shuts his eyes against contemplating evil. ¹⁶ This man will dwell on the heights. His refuge will be the mountain fortress. His bread will be supplied, and he will have water.

⁴ Tell those who have a fearful heart, "Be strong. Do not be afraid. Look, your God will come with vengeance, God's retribution. He will come and save you.

⁶ Isaiah said to them, "Tell your master, 'Thus says the LORD, "Do not be afraid of the words that you have heard, with which the servants of the king of Assyria have blasphemed me.

²² this is the word the LORD spoke against him: "The Virgin Daughter of Zion despises and mocks you. The Daughter of Jerusalem tosses her head as you flee.

³³ "'Therefore this is what the LORD says concerning the king of Assyria: "He will not enter this city or shoot an arrow here. He will not come before it with shield, or build a siege ramp against it. ³⁴ By the way that he came, he will return by the same and he will not come to this city, says the LORD. ³⁵ "'I will defend this city and save it, for my sake and for the sake of David my servant!'"

¹³ "I bring near my righteousness. It is not far away. My salvation will not be delayed. I will grant salvation to Zion, my splendor to Israel."

³ to give for those in mourning in Zion, to give them a head wrap instead of ashes, the oil of joy instead of mourning, a garment of praise instead of a faint spirit. And they will be called oaks of righteousness, the planting of the LORD, to show his glory.

²² But you have come to Mount Zion and to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to myriads of angels, to the joyful assembly ²³ and to the church of the firstborn, who are enrolled in heaven; and to God the Judge of all, and to the spirits of righteous men made perfect; ²⁴ to Jesus the mediator of a new covenant, and to the sprinkled blood that speaks a better word than the blood of Abel.

³⁵ That night, the LORD's angel went out, and struck one hundred eighty-five thousand in the camp of the Assyrians. When men arose early in the morning, behold, these were all dead bodies.

¹⁰ For yet a little while, and the wicked will be no more. Yes, though you look for his place, he isn’t there.

¹ In that day you will say: "I will praise you, O LORD. Although you were angry with me, your anger has turned away and you have comforted me. ² "Truly God is my salvation! I will trust and not be afraid. the LORD… the LORD is my strength and my song! He has become my salvation."

²⁴ the LORD Almighty has sworn, saying, Surely as I have thought, so it shall come to pass; and as I have purposed, it shall stand; ²⁵ To break Assur in my land, and upon my mountain I will tread him down: and his yoke was removed from off them, and his burden shall remove from off their shoulder.

⁴ This is what the LORD said to me: "A lion, even a young lion, growls over its prey when a crowd of shepherds is called to fight it. It is not frightened by their voices or disturbed by the noise they make. So the LORD Almighty will come to fight for Mount Zion and on its hill.

⁷ "For a brief moment I abandoned you, but with deep compassion I will bring you back.

³⁶ "'The king will do as he pleases. He'll exalt and magnify himself above every god, speaking amazing things against the God of Gods. He'll succeed until the indignation is completed, because what has been determined must be carried out.

³⁷ For in a very little while, “He who is coming will come and will not delay.

¹⁶ And you raise your staff, and stretch out your hand over the sea, and divide it so that the sons of Israel may go in the midst of the sea on dry ground.

²⁵ He made the wheels of their chariots wobble so that they drove them with difficulty. The Egyptians said, "Let's flee from Israel because the LORD is fighting for them and against us." ²⁶ And the LORD said to Moses, Stretch out your hand over the sea, that the waters may come again on the Egyptians, on their chariots, and on their horsemen. ²⁷ Moses held out his hand over the sea. At daybreak the water returned to its normal level. The Egyptians tried to escape from the water. But the LORD threw them into the sea.

²⁵ They captured the two Midianite chiefs, Oreb and Zeeb; they killed Oreb at Oreb Rock, and Zeeb at the Winepress of Zeeb. They continued to pursue the Midianites and brought the heads of Oreb and Zeeb to Gideon, who was now east of the Jordan.

¹⁰ and showed signs and wonders against Pharaoh, and against all his servants, and against all the people of his land; for you knew that they dealt proudly against them, and made a name for yourself, as it is this day. ¹¹ And you divided the sea before them, and they passed through the sea on dry ground, but their pursuers you threw into the depths like a stone into mighty waters.

²³ Wake up, and rise to my defense. Plead my case, O my God the LORD.

¹¹ Make their nobles like Oreb and Zeeb, yes, all their princes like Zebah and Zalmunna,

¹⁰ He saved them from the hand of the one who hated them and redeemed them from the hand of the enemy. ¹¹ But waters covered their adversaries; not one of them survived.

²⁴ Therefore, this is what the Sovereign LORD Almighty, declares: "O my people who live in Zion, do not be afraid of the Assyrians. They beat you with a rod and lift up a club against you, as Egypt did.

¹⁶ And there shall be a highway for the remnant of His people, those left from Assyria; as it was to Israel in the day that he came up out of the land of Egypt.

⁹ Awake, awake! Clothe yourself with strength, O arm of the LORD. Awake, as in days gone by, as in generations of old. Was it not you who cut Rahab to pieces, who pierced that monster through? ¹⁰ Was it not you who dried up the sea, the waters of the great deep, who made a road in the depths of the sea so that the redeemed might cross over?

⁷ I saw the tents of Cushan in distress, and the tent curtains of the land of Midian in anguish. ⁸ Was the anger of Yahweh against the rivers? Was your wrath against the rivers, or your fury against the sea, when you mounted upon your horses, upon your victory chariot? ⁹ You uncovered your bow. You called for your sworn arrows. Selah. You split the earth with rivers. ¹⁰ The mountains saw you, and were afraid. The storm of waters passed by. The deep roared and lifted up its hands on high. ¹¹ The sun and moon stood still in their dwelling. At the light of Your arrows they go, at the shining of Your gleaming spear. ¹² In fury you marched through the earth; in anger you trampled the nations. ¹³ You went out for the salvation of your people, for the salvation of your anointed. You crushed the head of the land of wickedness. You stripped them head to foot. Selah. ¹⁴ With his own lances you pierced the heads of his warriors, who came out like a windstorm to scatter us their joy is to devour the afflicted who are in hiding. ¹⁵ You trampled the sea with your horses, churning mighty waters.

¹⁸ The nations were enraged, and Your wrath has come. The time has come to judge the dead, and to reward Your servants, the prophets and saints, and those who fear Your name, both small and great, and to destroy those who destroy the earth.”

¹⁵ And from His mouth proceeds a sharp sword with which to strike down the nations, and He will rule them with an iron scepter. He treads the winepress of the fury of the wrath of God, the Almighty.

²¹ Ye mountains of Gilboa, upon you be neither dew nor rain, nor fields whence heave offerings come: For there the shields of the mighty were cast from them, the shield of Saul as though he had not been anointed with oil.

¹³ In the fourteenth year of King Hezekiah, Sennacherib king of Assyria came up against all of the fortified cities of Judah and captured them. ¹⁴ So Hezekiah king of Judah sent word to the king of Assyria at Lachish, saying, "I have done wrong. Withdraw from me. What you impose on me I will bear." So the king of Assyria imposed on Hezekiah king of Judah three hundred talents of silver and thirty talents of gold.

¹ Why do the nations rage, and the peoples plot in vain? ² The kings of the earth take their stand and the rulers gather together against the LORD and against his Anointed One. ³ "Let us break their bands asunder and throw off from us their yoke."

⁶ "But I myself have installed my king on Zion, my holy hill."

⁶ Now I know that the LORD saves His anointed; He answers him from His holy Heaven with the saving strengths of His right hand.

⁷ You love righteousness and hate wickedness. Therefore God, your God, has anointed you from among your companions with festive oil.

⁹ Look at our shield, O God. Look with favor on the face of your anointed one.

²⁰ I have found David my servant. With my holy oil I have anointed him, ²¹ For My hand shall support him; and My arm shall strengthen him. ²² No enemy will tax him, no wicked man will oppress him. ²³ I will crush his enemies before him and strike those who hate him. ²⁴ My faithfulness and gracious love will be with him, and in my name his power will be exalted. ²⁵ I will place his hand over the sea, and his right hand over the rivers. ²⁶ He will call out to me, 'You are my Father, my God, and the rock of my salvation.' ²⁷ I will also appoint him my firstborn, the highest of the kings of the earth. ²⁸ I will keep my mercy for him for ever; my agreement with him will not be changed. ²⁹ I will establish his dynasty forever, and his throne as long as heaven endures. ³⁰ If his sons forsake my law and do not walk in my judgments, ³¹ if they profane my statutes; and do not keep my commands, ³² then I will punish their sin with the rod, and their iniquity with stripes. ³³ But I will not annul My mercy from him, and I will not be false in My faithfulness. ³⁴ I will not break my covenant, nor alter what my lips have uttered. ³⁵ Once for all I have sworn by my holiness; that I will not be false to David. ³⁶ His offspring will endure forever, and his throne as the sun before me. ³⁷ It will be established forever like the moon, the faithful witness in the sky." Selah. ³⁸ But you have rejected and spurned. You have been angry with your anointed. ³⁹ You have renounced the covenant of your servant. You have defiled his crown in the dust. ⁴⁰ You have broken through all his walls; you have laid his fortresses in ruin. ⁴¹ All who pass by the way rob him. He has become a reproach to his neighbors. ⁴² You have exalted the right hand of his foes; You have made all his enemies rejoice. ⁴³ Yes, you turn back the edge of his sword, and haven’t supported him in battle. ⁴⁴ You put an end to his splendor and hurled his throne to the ground. ⁴⁵ You have cut short the days of his youth; you have covered him with shame. Selah ⁴⁶ How long, O LORD? Will you hide yourself forever? Shall your wrath burn like fire? ⁴⁷ Remember how transient is my life, For what futility have You created all the sons of humanity? ⁴⁸ What man can live on and not see death? Can he deliver his life from the power of Sheol? Selah ⁴⁹ Where is your gracious love of old, Lord, that in your faithfulness you promised to David? ⁵⁰ Remember, Lord, the reproach of your servants, how I bear in my heart the taunts of all the mighty peoples, ⁵¹ With which your enemies have mocked, LORD, with which they have mocked the footsteps of your anointed one. ⁵² Blessed be the LORD forever. ¹⁵ "Do not touch my anointed ones. Do my prophets no harm."

¹⁰ For the sake of your servant David do not reject your anointed one.

¹⁷ There I will cause a horn to grow for David; I will set a lamp for my anointed one. ¹⁸ I will clothe his enemies with shame, but on himself, his crown will be resplendent."

³⁵ "'I will defend this city and save it, for my sake and for the sake of David my servant!'"

²⁴ Seventy weeks are decreed on your people and on your holy city, to put an end to the transgression, and to make an end to sin, and to atone for iniquity, and to bring in everlasting righteousness, and to seal up vision and prophecy, and to anoint the most holy place. ²⁵ “Know therefore and discern that from the going out of the commandment to restore and to build Jerusalem to the Anointed One, the prince, will be seven weeks and sixty-two weeks. It will be built again, with street and moat, even in troubled times. ²⁶ After the sixty-two weeks the Anointed One will be cut off, and will have nothing. The people of the prince who come will destroy the city and the sanctuary. Its end will be with a flood, and war will be even to the end. Desolations are determined.

⁹ What do you plot against the LORD? He will completely destroy it; trouble will not rise up a second time! ¹⁰ Entangled like thorns and drunken from drink, they are consumed like dry stubble. ¹¹ From you goes out one who plots evil against the LORD, one who plans wickedness. ¹² the LORD declares: »Though they are strong and are many they will be destroyed! They will pass away. Though I have afflicted you [O Judah] I will not afflict you any more. ¹³ Now I will break off Assyria's yoke from you, and tear apart your shackles."

¹⁸ “The Spirit of the Lord is on Me, because He has anointed Me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent Me to proclaim deliverance to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to release the oppressed,

⁴¹ The first thing Andrew did was to find his brother Simon and say to him, "We have found the Messiah!" (which is translated "Christ").

²⁷ For in truth both Herod and Pontius Pilate, together with the Gentiles and the peoples of Israel, assembled together in this city against your holy servant Jesus whom you anointed,

²⁰ But you have an anointing from the Holy One, and you all know the truth.

²⁷ And as for you, the anointing which you received from him remains in you, and you do not have need that anyone teach you. But as his anointing teaches you about all things, and is true and is not a lie, and just as it has taught you, you reside in him.

² Now Joshua sent men from Jericho to Ai, which is near Beth Aven, east of Bethel, and he said to them, "Go up and spy out Ai." And the men went up and spied out Ai.

²¹ And they turned and went and put the little children, the livestock, and the valuable property in front of them.

² Saul chose three thousand men of Israel, of which two thousand were with Saul in Michmash and in the Mount of Bethel, and one thousand were with Jonathan in Gibeah of Benjamin, and the rest of the people he sent back to their tents.

⁵ The Philistines assembled to fight Israel. They had thirty thousand chariots, six thousand horsemen, and as many soldiers as the sand on the seashore. They camped at Michmash, east of Beth Aven.

² Saul stayed on the edge of Gibeah under a pomegranate tree in Migron. There were about six hundred men with him.

⁵ One crag rose on the north opposite Michmash, and the other on the south opposite Geba.

³¹ That day they struck down the Philistines from Michmash to Aijalon, and the army was very weary.

²² David left his things with the keeper of supplies and ran to the army and came and greeted his brothers.

³¹ The descendants of Benjamin from Geba, Micmash, Aija, Bethel and their settlements,

²⁴ Kephar Ammoni, Ophni, and Geba; twelve cities and their villages. ²⁵ Gibeon, Ramah, Beeroth,

¹⁷ From the territory of Benjamin they were given four cities: Gibeon, Geba,

¹² His master said to him, We won't go into the city of a foreigner whose people are not Israelites; we will go on to Gibeah. ¹³ "We will pass by and go a little farther and spend the night at Gibeah or Ramah." ¹⁴ So they went on and towards evening they were near Gibeah, which belongs to Benjamin. ¹⁵ They stopped there to spend the night in Gibeah. They went in and sat down in the street, because no-one took them into his house for the night.

¹⁷ He always returned to Ramah where his home was, and there he judged Israel. He built there an altar to the LORD.

⁴ Then the messengers came to Gibeah of Saul and reported these words to the people, and they all wept aloud.

¹⁶ Saul and his son Jonathan and the troops with them stayed at Geba (Gebeah) in Benjamin. The Philistines camped at Michmash.

²³ Now a garrison of the Philistines had gone out to the pass of Michmash.

⁴ On each side of the pass by which Jonathan intended to go over to the Philistines' garrison there was a rocky crag; one was called Bozez and the other Seneh.

³⁴ Then Samuel went to Ramah, and Saul went up to his house in Gibeah of Saul.

²³ Now the rest of all the acts of Asa, and all his might, and all that he did, and the cities which he built, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Judah? But in the time of his old age he was diseased in

¹⁵ Thus says the LORD: A voice is heard in Ramah, lamentation, and bitter weeping, Rachel weeping for her children; she refuses to be comforted for her children, because they are no more.

⁸ "Sound the trumpet in Gibeah, and the alarm in Ramah. Cry out at Beth-aven Go out, Benjamin!

⁹ They have gone deep in depravity as in the days of Gibeah. He will remember their iniquity. He will punish their sins.

⁹ From the days of Gibeah you have sinned, O Israel; there they have remained. Will not war in Gibeah overtake them against the children of evil?

¹⁸ Anathoth and Almon with their grass-lands, four towns.

⁷ Then the five men departed and came to Laish. They saw that the people there lived in security like the Sidonians, quiet and unsuspecting, and they were prosperous, lacking nothing. Also they were far from the Sidonians and had no dealings with anyone else.

²⁹ They called the city Dan, after the name of Dan their father, who was born to Israel, but the name of the city before was Laish.

²⁶ The king spoke to Abiathar the priest: "Go to your fields at Anathoth. You deserve death. But I will not put you to death now, because you carried the Ark of the LORD God before David my father. You were with him in all his troubles."

¹ The words of Jeremiah, son of Hilkiah. He was one of the priests at Anathoth in the territory of Benjamin.

⁸ So Hanamel the son of Shallom my father's brother came to me into the court of the prison, and said, Buy my field that is in the land of Benjamin, in Anathoth: for you have a right to buy it, and you are the elder. So I knew that it was the word of the Lord.

³¹ Ziklag, Madmannah, Sansannah,

¹ Then David went to Nob, to Ahimelech the priest. Ahimelech came to meet David trembling and said to him, Why are you alone and no-one with you?

¹⁹ He also killed the people of Nob, the city of the priests. Using his sword, he killed men and women, children and infants, cows, donkeys, and sheep.

⁸ The daughter of Zion is left like a shelter in a vineyard, like a hut in a field of melons, like a besieged city.

² In the last days the mountain of the house of the LORD will be established as the highest of the mountains and exalted above the hills. All the nations will stream to it.

¹⁵ the LORD will utterly destroy the tongue of the Egyptian sea; and with his scorching wind he will wave his hand over the River, and will split it into seven streams, and cause men to march over in sandals.

² Raise a signal on a bare hill, lift up your voice to them; wave the hand and may they enter the gateways of the noblemen.

¹⁶ In that day the Egyptians will be like women and they will tremble and fear because of the shaking of the hand of the LORD Almighty, which he shakes over them.

²³ They grab bow and spear; they're cruel and show no mercy. Their sound roars like the sea as they ride on horses, deployed like men ready for battle against you, daughter of Zion."

⁹ "Behold! I will shake my hand (power) over them, and they will be a spoil to those who served them." Then you will know that the LORD Almighty has sent me.

²¹ This is the word that the LORD has spoken concerning him: "The virgin daughter of Zion has despised you and ridiculed you. The daughter of Jerusalem has shaken her head at you. ²² Whom have you defied and blasphemed? Against whom have you exalted your voice and lifted up your eyes on high? From days of old I formed it. Now I have caused it to come, that you should make fortified cities desolate ruin heaps. ²⁶ "The inhabitants of these cities are weak, discouraged, and ashamed. They will be like plants in the field, like fresh green grass on the roofs, scorched before it grows up. ²⁷ But I know thy down-sitting, and thy going forth, and thy rage against me. ²⁸ Because your wrath against me and your words of pride have come up to my ears, I will put my hook in your nose and my cord in your lips, and I will make you go back by the way you came. ²⁹ “This will be the sign to you: This year, you will eat that which grows of itself, and in the second year that which springs from that; and in the third year sow, and reap, and plant vineyards, and eat its fruit. ³⁰ The remainder of the house of Judah which survives will again take root below and bear fruit above. ³¹ For out of Jerusalem shall go forth a remnant, and out of Mount Zion they that shall escape; the zeal of the LORD Almighty shall do this. ³² “Therefore the LORD says concerning the king of Assyria, 'He will not come to this city, nor shoot an arrow there. He will not come before it with shield, nor cast up a mound against it. ³³ By the way that he came, by the same will he return and he will not come to this city, says the LORD. ³⁴ And I will defend this city to save her for my sake and for the sake of David my servant.'" ³⁵ That night, the LORD's angel went out, and struck one hundred eighty-five thousand in the camp of the Assyrians. When men arose early in the morning, behold, these were all dead bodies. ³⁶ So Sennacherib king of Assyria brake up, and went his way, and returned,—and remained in Nineveh. ³⁷ And he will be worshiping in the house of Nisroch his god, and Adrammelech and Sharezer struck him with the sword: and they escaped to the land of Ararat: and Esarhaddon his son will reign in his stead.

¹¹ The lofty looks of man shall be humbled, and the pride of men shall be bowed down, and the LORD alone shall be exalted in that day. ¹² For the day of the LORD Almighty shall be on all the proud and lofty ones, and on all that is lifted up; and it will be abased; ¹³ for all the cedars of Lebanon, that are high and lifted up, for all the oaks of Bashan, ¹⁴ against all the high mountains and all the lofty hills, ¹⁵ for every lofty tower, for every fortified wall, ¹⁶ for all the ships of Tarshish, and for all pleasant imagery. ¹⁷ And every man shall be brought low, and the pride of men shall fall: and the Lord alone shall be exalted in that day.

²⁴ "By your messengers you have heaped insults on the LORD. You said: With my many chariots I have ascended the heights of the mountains, the utmost heights of Lebanon. I cut down its tallest cedars, the choicest of its pines. I reach its remotest heights, the finest of its forests. ²⁵ "I dug wells and drank the water there. With the bottom of my feet I dried up all the streams of Egypt. ²⁶ "Have you not heard? Long ago I ordained it. In days of old I planned it! And now I have brought it to pass, that you have turned fortified cities into piles of stone. ²⁷ "Their people are drained of power. They are dismayed and put to shame. They are like plants in the field, like tender green shoots, like grass sprouting on the roof, parched before it grows. ²⁸ »I know where you stay and when you come and go and how you rage against me. ²⁹ "For the reason that you rage against me and because your insolence (arrogance) has reached my ears, I will put my hook in your nose and my bit in your mouth. I will make you return by the way you came." ³⁰ "'This will be the sign for you, O Hezekiah: 'This year you will eat what grows by itself. The second year you will eat what springs from that. But in the third year sow and reap, plant vineyards and eat their fruit. ³¹ »‘Again a remnant of the house of Judah will take root below and bear fruit above. ³² "'Out of Jerusalem will come a remnant, and out of Mount Zion a band of survivors. The zeal of the Sovereign LORD will accomplish this. ³³ "'Therefore this is what the LORD says concerning the king of Assyria: "He will not enter this city or shoot an arrow here. He will not come before it with shield, or build a siege ramp against it. ³⁴ By the way that he came, he will return by the same and he will not come to this city, says the LORD. ³⁵ "'I will defend this city and save it, for my sake and for the sake of David my servant!'" ³⁶ The angel of the LORD put to death a hundred and eighty-five thousand men in the Assyrian camp. The people got up the next morning and saw all the dead bodies!

³⁸ One day, while he was worshiping in the temple of his god Nisroch, his sons Adrammelech and Sharezer cut him down with the sword. They escaped to the land of Ararat. Esarhaddon his son succeeded him as king.

⁹ Yet I destroyed the Amorite before them, who was as tall as cedars and was as strong as the oaks. I destroyed his fruit above and his roots beneath.

¹¹ For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted."

²⁰ Bless the LORD, you his angels, you mighty heroes who do his word by obeying the sound of his word.

⁸ And Assyria shall fall by a sword not of a man, and a sword not of a human shall devour him; and he shall flee from the sword, and his young men shall be put to forced labor.

²⁴ "By your messengers you have heaped insults on the LORD. You said: With my many chariots I have ascended the heights of the mountains, the utmost heights of Lebanon. I cut down its tallest cedars, the choicest of its pines. I reach its remotest heights, the finest of its forests.

⁷ And I will prepare destroyers against you, each one with his weapons. And they shall cut down your choice cedars, and throw them into the fire.

²² Its sound is like a serpent's going, for they shall go in force, and come against her with axes, like woodcutters. ²³ "'They will cut down the forest,' declares the LORD, 'since Egypt cannot be found. They are more numerous than locusts. They cannot be counted.

¹² the LORD declares: »Though they are strong and are many they will be destroyed! They will pass away. Though I have afflicted you [O Judah] I will not afflict you any more.

¹ Open your doors, O Lebanon, so that the fire may devour your cedars. ² Wail, cypress tree, for the cedar has fallen while the stately trees are destroyed. Wail, oak trees of Bashan, for the old growth forest has been cut down.

⁷ and to grant relief to you who are oppressed, and to us as well, when the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven with His mighty angels

¹¹ Yet even angels, although they are greater in strength and power, do not bring a slanderous accusation against them from the Lord.

¹ Then I saw another mighty angel coming down from heaven. He was clothed in a cloud, with a rainbow over his head; his face was like the sun, his legs were like pillars of fire,

²¹ Then a mighty angel picked up a stone the size of a great millstone and cast it into the sea, saying: “With such violence the great city of Babylon will be cast down, never to be seen again.
