Before you were born, I sanctified you. I have appointed you a prophet to the nations.” 6 I, Jeremiah, said: "Sovereign LORD, I do not know how to speak. I am only a child!" 7 the LORD said to me: "'Do not say, 'I am only a child.' You must go wherever I send you. You must say whatever I command you to say. 8 Do not be afraid of them, for I am with you to deliver you," declares the LORD. 9 Then the LORD stretched out his hand and touched my mouth. the LORD said to me: »I have put my words in your mouth. 10 See, today I've appointed you to prophesy about nations and kingdoms, to pull up and tear down, to destroy and overthrow, to build and to plant." 11 The word of the LORD came to me, asking, "What do you see, Jeremiah?" I replied, "I see an almond branch." 12 Then the LORD said to me, "You have seen well; for I watch over my word to perform it." 13 The word of the LORD came to me a second time: "What do you see?" I replied, "I see a boiling pot, and its mouth is tilted away from the north." 14 Then the LORD said to me, "From the north disaster will pour out on all who live in the land, 15 For, look, I am calling to all the clans of the kingdoms of the north," declares the LORD, "and they will come and set each one his throne at the entrance of the gates of Jerusalem, and against all its surrounding walls, and against all the cities of Judah. 16 "I will pronounce judgment against my people because of all their wickedness. They abandoned me. They burned incense to other gods. They worshiped what their hands have made. 17 But you, you must gird your loins, and stand, and speak to them all that I command you. Do not be afraid of them, or I will shatter you before them. 18 For, behold, today I have made you a fortified city, and an iron pillar, and bronze walls against the whole land, against the kings of Judah, against her princes, against her priests, and to the people of the land. 19 "They will fight you but they will not defeat you. I am with you, and I will rescue you," declares the LORD.

2 Chronicles 34:1-33

1 Josiah was eight years old when he began to reign, and he reigned in Jerusalem thirty-one years. 2 And he did the right in the eyes of the LORD, and walked in the ways of his father David, and did not turn aside to the right or to the left. 3 In the eighth year of his reign, while he was still a boy, he began to seek the God of David his ancestor. And in the twelfth year he began to cleanse Judah and Jerusalem of the high places, the Asherahs, the idols, and the images. 4 He tore down the altars of the Baal gods. He cut down the incense altars that were above them. He destroyed the Asherah poles, carved idols, and metal idols. He ground them into powder and scattered the powder over the tombs of those who had sacrificed to them. 5 He burned the bones of the priests on their altars, and purged Judah and Jerusalem. 6 In the cities of Manasseh, Ephraim, Simeon, and as far as Naphtali and their surrounding ruins, 7 Then he tore down the altars, beat the Asherah poles and idols into powder, and cut down all the incense altars everywhere in Israel. Then he went back to Jerusalem. 8 And, in the eighteenth year of his reign, when he had purified the land and the house, he sent Shaphan son of Azaliah and Maaseiah the ruler of the city and Joah son of Joahaz the recorder, to repair the house of the LORD his God. 9 And they came to Hilkiah the high priest and gave the money that was brought for the house of God, which the Levites, the guardians of the threshold, had gathered from the hand of Manasseh, Ephraim, and from the whole remnant of Israel, and from all Judah and Benjamin and the inhabitants of Jerusalem. 10 They gave the money to the foremen who were in charge of the LORD's Temple. These foremen gave it to the workmen who were restoring and repairing the Temple. 11 They, in turn, paid the carpenters and builders to purchase quarried stone and timber for binders and beams for the buildings that previous kings of Judah had let deteriorate. 12 The men did their work faithfully under the supervision of Jahath and Obadiah; Levites descended from Merari, and Zechariah and Meshullam descendants of Kohath. The Levites, who were skilled musicians, 13 were over the porters and were directing all who worked on each task. And some of the Levites were scribes, officials, and gatekeepers. 14 While they were bringing out the money that had come in as gifts to the LORD's temple, Hilkiah the priest discovered the Book of the Law of the LORD that had been handed down by Moses. 15 And Hilkiah answered and said to Shaphan the scribe, "I have found the book of the law in the house of the LORD," and gave the book to Shaphan. 16 Shaphan took the book to the king and reported: »We are doing everything you told us to do. 17 They've removed the money that was found in the Lord's temple and have passed it on to the supervisors and the workmen." 18 And Shaphan the scribe informed the king saying, Hilkijah the priest has given me a book. And Shaphan read out of it before the king. 19 When the king had heard the words of the law, he tore his clothes. 20 The king commanded Hilkiah, Ahikam the son of Shaphan, Abdon the son of Micah, Shaphan the scribe, and Asaiah the king's servant, saying, 21 Go inquire of the LORD for me, and for those who are left in Israel and in Judah, concerning the words of the book that is found. Great is the wrath of the LORD that is poured out on us, because our fathers have not kept the word of the LORD, to do according to all that is written in this book. 22 So Hilkiah, and those whom the king [had commanded], went to Huldah the prophetess, the wife of Shallum the son of Tokhath, the son of Hasrah, keeper of the wardrobe (now she dwelt in Jerusalem in the second quarter), and they spok 23 She told them: "This is what the LORD the God of Israel says: "Tell the man who sent you to me, 24 "This is what the LORD says: 'I am going to bring disaster on this place and on the people living here. This is according to the curses written in the book that was read to the king of Judah. 25 because they have abandoned me and burned incense to other gods so as to provoke me to anger with all the works of their hands. And my wrath will be poured out on this place and it will not be quenched.' 26 But to the king of Judah, who sent you to inquire of the LORD, you shall tell him this, 'the LORD, the God of Israel says: “About the words which you have heard, 27 "Because your heart was sensitive, and you humbled yourself before God when you heard what he had to say about this place and its inhabitants indeed, because you humbled yourself before me, tore your clothes, and cried out to me, I have heard you," declares the LORD. 28 “Behold, I will gather you to your fathers, and you will be gathered to your grave in peace. Your eyes won’t see all the evil that I will bring on this place and on its inhabitants.”’” They brought back word to the king. 29 Then the king sent and convened all the elders of Judah and Jerusalem. 30 And the king went up into the house of the LORD, and all the men of Judah, and the people of Jerusalem, and the priests, and the Levites, and all the people from the great to the small. And he read in their ears all the words of the Book of the Covenant that was found in the house of the LORD. 31 And the king stood at his standing and made a covenant before the LORD, to follow the LORD and to keep his commandments, his witnesses and his statutes with all his heart and with all his soul and to fulfill the words of the covenant written in the said book. 32 He caused all who were found in Jerusalem and Benjamin to stand to it. The inhabitants of Jerusalem did according to the covenant of God, the God of their fathers. 33 And Josiah removed all the detestable things from the whole land that belonged to the Israelites and obligated all who were found in Israel to serve the LORD their God. All his days they did not turn aside from following the LORD, the God of their ancestors.

And so Judah was transported into exile from the land. 22 ¶ And as for the people whom Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon, left in the land of Judah, he made Gedaliah, the son of Ahikam, the son of Shaphan, governor over them. 23 When all of the commanders of the troops heard, they and the men, that the king of Babylon had appointed Gedaliah, they came to Gedaliah at Mizpah, even Ishmael the son of Nethaniah, Johanan the son of Kareah, Seriah the son of Tanhumeth the Netophathite, Jaazaniah the son of the Maacathite, they and their men. 24 Gedaliah made this promise to them and to their men: "Don't be afraid of the servants of the Chaldeans. Live in the land and serve the king of Babylon, and things will go well with you." 25 In the seventh month, Ishmael, the son of Nethaniah, the son of Elishama, of the king's seed, came with ten men and made an attack on Gedaliah, causing his death and the death of the Jews and the Chaldaeans who were with him at Mizpah. 26 Then all the people, small and great, and the captains of the forces, got up and went away to Egypt, for fear of the Chaldaeans. 27 And it came to pass in the thirty-seventh year of the captivity of Jehoiachin king of Judah, in the twelfth month, on the twenty-seventh day of the month, that Evil-merodach king of Babylon, in the year that he began to reign, lift 28 He spoke kindly to him, and he gave him a better seat than the seat of the kings who were with him in Babylon. 29 and changes his prison clothes: and he eats bread continually at his face all the days of his life: 30 And for his food, the king gave him a regular amount every day for the rest of his life.

He did not humble himself before Jeremiah the prophet who spoke for the LORD. 13 And he also rebelled against king Nebuchadnezzar, who had made him take oath by God; and he stiffened his neck, and hardened his heart from returning to the LORD the God of Israel. 14 All the leaders of the priests and the people likewise increased in unfaithfulness according to all the detestable things of the nations. And they polluted the house of the LORD that he had consecrated in Jerusalem. 15 The LORD, the God of their fathers, sent to them by his messengers, rising up early and sending, because he had compassion on his people, and on his dwelling place: 16 But they mocked the messengers of God, and despised his words, and scoffed at his prophets, until the wrath of the LORD arose against his people, till there was no remedy. 17 And he brought up [against] them the king of the Chaldees, and slew their young men with the sword in the house of their sanctuary, and spared not young man nor maiden, old man nor him of hoary head: he gave [them] all into his hand. 18 He brought to Babylon each of the utensils from God's temple, the treasures from the LORD's Temple, and the treasures of the king and his officials. 19 They burned God's house, and broke down the wall of Jerusalem, and burned all its palaces with fire, and destroyed all of its valuable vessels. 20 And all who had not come to death by the sword he took away prisoners to Babylon; and they became servants to him and to his sons till the kingdom of Persia came to power: 21 To fill up the word of the LORD in the mouth of Jeremiah, till the land delighted in her Sabbaths: all the days she was laid waste she rested, to complete seventy years.

Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon is warring against us. Perhaps the LORD will deal with us with all his wonderful acts, so that the enemy will withdraw from us." 3 Then Jeremiah said to them, “Tell Zedekiah: 4 'This is what the LORD God of Israel says: "I'm about to turn against you the weapons of war that are in your hands and with which you are fighting the king of Babylon and the Chaldeans who are besieging you outside the walls. I'll gather them into the center of this city. 5 And I myself will fight against you with an outstretched hand and with a strong arm, and in anger, and in fury, and in great wrath. 6 I'll strike down the residents of this city, both people and animals, and they'll die from a terrible plague. 7 "'"Afterwards," declares the LORD: "I will hand over Judah's King Zedekiah, his officials, the people, and everyone else in this city who survives the plague, war, and famine. They will be handed over to King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon and to their enemies who want to kill them. Nebuchadnezzar will kill them with swords. He will not spare them, show them compassion, or care for them."' 8 "You shall say to this people, 'This is what the LORD says: "I'm about to set before you the way of life and the way of death. 9 Whoever stays in this city will die by the sword, by famine, and by the plague. But whoever goes out and surrenders to the Chaldeans who are besieging you will live. He will save his life as a spoil of war. 10 For I have set my face against this city for evil and not for good," declares the LORD. It will be given into the hand of the king of Babylon, and he will burn it with fire." ' 11 "'Then say to the household of the king of Judah: 'Hear the word of the LORD, 12 O house of David! Thus, saith the LORD, Administer justice betimes, And deliver the robbed out of the hand of the oppressor,—Lest mine indignation come forth like fire And burn and there be none to quench it, Because of the wickedness of your doings: 13 Behold, I am against you, O dweller of the valley, rock of the plain, says the LORD, those who say, Who can come down against us? Or, Who can enter our dwellings? 14 But I'll punish you according to what you have done," declares the LORD. "I'll start a fire in her forest, and it will consume everything around her."'"

Jeremiah 25:1-3

1 The word coming to Jeremiah concerning all the people of Judah, in the fourth year of Jehoiakim son of Josiah king of Judah; it was the first year to Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon; 2 which Jeremiah the prophet spoke to all the people of Judah, and to all the inhabitants of Jerusalem: 3 "From the thirteenth year of the reign of Ammon's son Josiah, the king of Judah, until the present time, for 23 years the word of the LORD has come to me, and I've spoken to you again and again, but you haven't listened.

Jeremiah 26:1-24

1 In the beginning of the reign of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, king of Judah, this word came from the LORD: 2 “the LORD says: 'Stand in the court of the LORD's house, and speak to all the cities of Judah, which come to worship in the LORD's house, all the words that I command you to speak to them. Don't omit a word. 3 Perhaps they will listen and turn back each from his evil way, and I will relent of the disaster that I am planning to do to them because of their evil deeds. 4 Say to them, "This is what the LORD says: 'If you don't listen to me to follow my Law which I've set before you, 5 to listen to the words of my servants the prophets whom I have sent to you, over and over again, though you have not listened, 6 then I will make this house like Shiloh, and this city I will make a curse for all the nations of the earth.'" '" 7 The priests and the prophets and all the people heard Jeremiah speaking these words in the house of the LORD. 8 As soon as Jeremiah finished saying everything that the LORD had commanded him to say to all the people, the priests, the prophets, and all the people seized him, telling him as they did: "You must certainly die! 9 Why have you prophesied in the LORD's name, saying, 'This house will be like Shiloh, and this city will be desolate, without inhabitant?'” All the people were crowded around Jeremiah in the LORD's house. 10 When the officials of Judah heard these things, they came up from the king's house to the house of the LORD; and they sat in the entry of the New Gate of the LORD's house. 11 The priests and the prophets said to the leaders and to the people: "This man deserves to be sentenced to death because he has spoken against our city. You heard him with your own ears." 12 Then Jeremiah said to all the officials and to all the people, saying, "the LORD sent me to prophesy against this house and against this city all the words that you have heard. 13 Now therefore amend your ways and your doings, and obey the LORD your God's voice; then the LORD will relent from the evil that he has pronounced against you. 14 Look, I'm in your hands, so do with me what you think is good and right. 15 Only know for certain that, if you put me to death, you will bring innocent blood on yourselves, and on this city, and on its inhabitants; for of a truth the LORD has sent me to you to speak all these words in your ears." 16 Then the officials and all the people said to the priests and to the prophets: "This man is not worthy of death; for he has spoken to us in the name of the LORD our God." 17 Some of the elders of the land got up and said to all the assembled people, 18 Micah the Morasthite prophesied in the days of Hezekiah king of Judah and spoke to all the people of Judah, saying, Thus hath the LORD of the hosts said; Zion shall be plowed like a field, and Jerusalem shall become heaps, and the temple mount as the high places of a forest. 19 "Did Hezekiah king of Judah or anyone in Judah kill him? Didn't he fear the LORD and seek the LORD's favor, and so the LORD changed his mind about the disaster that he had spoken to them about. We're bringing great disaster on ourselves. 20 "There was another man prophesying in the name of the LORD. His name was Uriah, son of Shemaiah, from Kiriath Jearim. He prophesied against this city and this land as Jeremiah did. 21 "When King Jehoiakim and all his personal troops and officials heard what Uriah said the king wanted to put him to death. But Uriah heard about it and fled in fear to Egypt. 22 And Jehoiakim the king sent Elnathan, the son of Achbor, and certain men with him, into Egypt. 23 "They brought Uriah from Egypt and took him to King Jehoiakim. The king executed Uriah and threw his body into the burial ground for the common people." 24 Ahikam, son of Shaphan, supported Jeremiah. So Jeremiah was not handed over to the people to be put to death.

Jeremiah 28:1-17

1 And it happened in that year, in the beginning of the reign of Zedekiah king of Judah, in the fourth year, in the fifth month, Hananiah the son of Azur the prophet, of Gibeon, spoke to me in the house of the LORD, in the presence of the priests and of all the people, saying, 2 "Thus says the LORD Almighty, the God of Israel, saying, 'I have broken the yoke of the king of Babylon. 3 and within two years I'll bring back to this place all the vessels of the LORD's temple that Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon took from this place and carried to Babylon. 4 I will bring again to this place Jeconiah the son of Jehoiakim, king of Judah, with all the captives of Judah, who went to Babylon,' says the LORD; 'for I will break the yoke of the king of Babylon.'” 5 Then the prophet Jeremiah said to the prophet Hananiah, before the priests and all the people who had come into the house of the Lord, 6 even the prophet Jeremiah said, Amen. May the LORD do so. May the LORD confirm your words which you have prophesied, to bring again the vessels of the LORD's house, and all that is exiled from Babylon into this place. 7 But please listen to this what I'm speaking in your hearing and in the hearing of all the people. 8 The prophets who came before us from ancient times prophesied war, famine, and plague against many lands and great kingdoms. 9 "A prophet who predicts peace can only be recognized as a prophet whom the LORD has truly sent when that prophet's predictions come true." 10 Then the prophet Hananiah took the yoke from the neck of Jeremiah the prophet and broke it. 11 Hananiah, in front of all the people, said, "This is what the LORD says: 'In the same way, within two years, I'll break the yoke of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon from the neck of all the nations.'" Then Jeremiah the prophet went on his way. 12 And after Hananiah the prophet had broken the yoke from off the neck of the prophet Jeremiah, the word of the LORD came unto Jeremiah, saying, 13 "Go and say to Hananiah, 'This is what the LORD says: "You have broken wooden yokes, but you have made iron yokes in their place." 14 For so says the LORD Almighty, the God of Israel, I have put a yoke of iron on the neck of all these nations, that they may serve Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon. And they shall serve him. And I have given him the beasts of the field also. 15 Then the prophet Jeremiah said to Hananiah the prophet, Hear now, Hananiah, the LORD has not sent you, but you have made this people trust in a lie. 16 Therefore, this is what the LORD says: 'I'm about to remove you from the face of the earth. This year you will die because you have preached rebellion against the LORD.'" 17 And Hananiah died the same year in the seventh month.

Jeremiah 34:1-35:19

1 the LORD spoke his word to Jeremiah when King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon, his entire army, and all the kingdoms and people that he ruled were attacking Jerusalem and all its cities. This is what he said: 2 "This is what the LORD the God of Israel says: 'Go to King Zedekiah of Judah, and tell him, the LORD says: "I am going to hand this city over to the king of Babylon. He will burn it down. 3 "You will not escape from him. You will certainly be captured and handed over to him. You will see the king of Babylon with your own eyes, and he will talk to you face to face. Then you will go to Babylon. 4 Yet hear the word of the LORD, O Zedekiah king of Judah: thus says the LORD concerning you, 'You shall not die by the sword; 5 You will die peacefully, and as they burned fires for your ancestors, the former kings who were before you, so they'll burn fires for you, wailing, "Oh how terrible, your majesty!"' For I've spoken the word," declares the LORD. 6 Then Jeremiah the prophet said all these things to Zedekiah, king of Judah, in Jerusalem, 7 while the army of the king of Babylon was fighting against Jerusalem and all the cities of Judah that were left, namely Lachish and Azekah. (They were the only fortified cities that remained among the cities of Judah.) 8 The Word that came to Jeremiah from the LORD, after King Zedekiah had cut a covenant with all the people at Jerusalem, to proclaim liberty to them, 9 Everyone was supposed to free his Hebrew slaves, both male and female. No one was supposed to keep another Jew as a slave. 10 All the officials and all the people who had entered into the covenant agreed that each would set his male and female slaves free so that they would not enslave them any longer. They obeyed and they released them. 11 Later they changed their minds and took back the men and women they had freed and made them their slaves again. 12 And the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah, saying, 13 "This is what the LORD God of Israel says: 'I made a covenant with your ancestors on the day I brought them out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery. I told them: 14 "Every seven years each of you must free any Hebrews who sold themselves to you. When they have served you for six years, you must set them free. But your ancestors refused to obey me or listen to me. 15 You recently repented and did what was right in my eyes by proclaiming release for one another, and you made a covenant before me in the house that is called by my name. 16 But then you turned around and profaned my name when each of you took back his male and female slaves whom you had set free according to their desire, and you forced them to become male and female slaves."' 17 "Therefore, this is what the LORD says: 'You haven't obeyed me by each of you proclaiming a release for your brothers and neighbors. Now I'm going to proclaim a release for you,' declares the LORD, 'a release to the sword, to plague, and to famine, and I'll make you a horrifying sight to all the kingdoms of the earth. 18 I'll give over the men who transgressed my covenant, who haven't fulfilled the terms of the covenant that they made before me when they cut the calf in two and passed between its parts 19 the princes of Judah, the princes of Jerusalem, the eunuchs, the priests, and all the people of the land, who passed between the parts of the calf;

Jeremiah 35:1-19

1 This is the word that came to Jeremiah from the LORD, in the days of Jehoiakim, the son of Josiah, king of Judah: 2 Go to the family of Archabin and thou shalt bring them to the house of the Lord, into one of the courts, and give them wine to drink. 3 Then I took Jaazaniah the son of Jeremiah, the son of Habazziniah, and his brothers, all his sons and the whole family of the Rechabites; 4 And I brought them into the house of the LORD, into the room of the sons of Hananiah son of Gedaliah, the man of God, which was by the room of the officials, which was above the room of Maaseiah the son of Shallum, the keeper of the threshold. 5 And I set pots full of wine, and cups, before the sons of the house of the Rechabites. And I said to them, Drink wine! 6 But they said, "We won't drink wine, because our ancestor, Rechab's son Jonadab commanded us: 'You and your descendants are never to drink wine! 7 Neither shall you build house, nor sow seed, nor plant vineyard, nor have any: but all your days you shall dwell in tents; that you may live many days in the land where you are sojourners. 8 We have obeyed everything that our ancestor, Rechab's son Jonadab, commanded us. So we, our wives, our sons, and our daughters have drunk no wine all our lives, 9 and have built no houses to live in. We don't have vineyards, fields, or seed. 10 We have lived in tents. We have obeyed and have done everything that our ancestor Jonadab commanded us. 11 "But when King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon invaded this land, we said: 'Let's go to Jerusalem to escape the Babylonian and Aramean armies. That is why we are living in Jerusalem.'" 12 Then the word of the LORD came to Jeremiah, saying, 13 "This is what the LORD Almighty, the God of Israel, says: 'Tell the people of Judah and those who live in Jerusalem, Will you ever learn your lesson and obey my words?" Declares the LORD. 14 "The words of Jonadab the son of Rechab, that he commanded his sons, not to drink wine, are performed; and to this day they drink none, for they obey their father's commandment: but I have spoken to you, rising up early and speaking; and you have not listened to me. 15 I have also sent to you all My servants the prophets, rising up early and sending, saying, Each man now return from his evil way, and amend your doings, and do not go after other gods to serve them, and you shall live in the land which I have given to you and to your fathers. But you have not bowed your ear, nor listened to Me. 16 Indeed the descendants of Rechab's son Jonadab have carried out the command of their ancestor that he gave them, but this people has not obeyed me. 17 "This is what the LORD Almighty, the God of Israel, says: 'I am going to bring on Judah and on all those who live in Jerusalem all the disasters that I threatened. I have spoken to them, but they did not listen. I called to them, but they did not answer.'" 18 Then Jeremiah said to the family of Rechab: "This is what the LORD Almighty, the God of Israel, says: 'You obeyed the order of your ancestor Jonadab, followed all his instructions, and did exactly what he told you to do. 19 So this is what the LORD Almighty, the God of Israel, says: "A descendant of Jonadab, Rechab's son, will always serve me."'"

Jeremiah 37:1-21

1 Jedekiah the son of Josiah, which was made king through Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, reigned in the land of Judah, in the stead of Coniah the son of Jehoiakim. 2 But neither he, nor his servants, nor the people of the land had hearkened unto the words of the LORD, which he had spoken through Jeremiah the prophet. 3 King Zedekiah sent Jehucal son of Shelemiah and the priest Zephaniah son of Maaseiah to the prophet Jeremiah. They asked him: "Please pray to the LORD our God for us." 4 Now Jeremiah was still going in and out among the people since he had not yet been put in prison. 5 Pharaoh's army had come out of Egypt, and when the Chaldeans who were besieging Jerusalem heard the report about them, they withdrew from Jerusalem. 6 Then the word of the LORD came to Jeremiah the prophet: 7 "This is what the LORD the God of Israel says: 'Say this to the king of Judah, who sent you to get advice from me: "Pharaoh's army has come out to help you. But it will go back to Egypt, its own land. 8 "Then the Babylonians will return. They will attack the city, capture it, and burn it down." 9 This is what the LORD says: "Don't deceive yourselves by saying, 'The Chaldeans will surely go away from us,' for they won't go. 10 "Even if you would defeat the entire Babylonian army so that they had only a few badly wounded men left in their tents, they would get up and burn down this city!"’" 11 When the Chaldean army was leaving Jerusalem because of Pharaoh's army, 12 Jeremiah wanted to leave Jerusalem and go to the territory of Benjamin to take possession of his property there among the people. 13 When he came to Benjamin Gate, the captain of the guard there, whose name was Irijah, son of Shelemiah and grandson of Hananiah, arrested the prophet Jeremiah. He said: "You are deserting to the Babylonians!" 14 Jeremiah answered: "That is not true! I am not deserting to the Babylonians." But Irijah would not listen to him. Irijah arrested Jeremiah and took him to the officials. 15 The princes were angry with Jeremiah and struck him and imprisoned him in the house of Jonathan the scribe; for they had made that the prison. 16 Jeremiah went into a prison cell, and he stayed there a long time. 17 Then King Zedekiah sent for Jeremiah, and the king asked him privately in the palace: "Is there any message from the LORD? Jeremiah answered: Yes! There is a message from the LORD. You will be handed over to the king of Babylon." 18 Then Jeremiah asked King Zedekiah, "What offense have I committed against you, your officials, or these people that you have put me in prison? 19 "Where are the prophets who told you that the king of Babylon would not attack you and this land? 20 Now then, my lord the king, please let my plea fall before you. You must not send me back to the house of Jonathan the secretary, so that I will not die there." 21 So King Zedekiah gave the order, and they assigned Jeremiah to the courtyard of the guard. Each day they gave him a loaf of bread from the bakers' street until all the bread in the city was gone. So Jeremiah remained in the courtyard of the guard.

Jeremiah 39:2

2 On the ninth day of the fourth month of Zedekiah's eleventh year as king, the city walls were broken through.

Jeremiah 52:1-34

1 Zedekiah was twenty-one years old when he began to reign; and he reigned eleven years in Jerusalem; and his mother`s name was Hamutal, daughter of Jeremiah of Libnah. 2 And he did evil in the eyes of the Lord, as Jehoiakim had done. 3 For because of the anger of the LORD this happened in Jerusalem and Judah until his casting them from his presence. And Zedekiah rebelled against the king of Babylon. 4 and in the ninth year of his reign, in the tenth month, on the tenth day, King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon came against Jerusalem with all his army. He encamped near it and set up siege works all around it. 5 So the city came under siege until the eleventh year of King Zedekiah. 6 By the ninth day of the fourth month the famine became so severe that there was no food for the people of the land. 7 The wall of the city was broken through, and all the soldiers fled, leaving the city at night by way of the gate between the two walls next to the king's garden, even though the Chaldeans were all around the city. They went in the direction of the Arabah. 8 The Babylonian army pursued King Zedekiah and caught up with him in the plain of Jericho. His entire army had deserted him. 9 Then they captured the king and brought him up to the king of Babylon at Riblah in the land of Hamath, and he passed sentence on him. 10 And the king of Babylon slaughtered the sons of Zedekiah before his eyes, and he also slaughtered all the officials of Judah at Riblah. 11 And he put out Zedekiah's eyes; and the king of Babylon, chaining him in iron bands, took him to Babylon, and put him in prison till the day of his death. 12 Now the tenth day of the fifth Month, in the nineteenth year of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, Nebuzaradan the chief captain and the king of Babylon's servants came unto Jerusalem, 13 He burned down the LORD’s Temple, the royal palace, and all the houses in Jerusalem. Every important building was burned down. 14 The entire Babylonian army that was with the captain of the guard tore down the walls around Jerusalem. 15 Nebuzaradan the captain of the bodyguard carried into exile some of the poorest of the people, the rest of the people left in the city, the deserters who had defected to the king of Babylon, and the rest of the craftsmen. 16 Nebuzaradan, the captain of the guard, left some of the poorest people in the land to work in the vineyards and on the farms. 17 The Chaldeans broke in pieces the bronze pillars that were in the LORD's temple and the stands and the bronze sea that were in the LORD's temple, and they carried all the bronze to Babylon. 18 they took the pots, shovels, snuffers, bowls, dishes, and all the copper utensils used in the Temple service. 19 The captain of the bodyguard took away the bowls, the fire pans, the basins, the pots, the lamp stands, the pans, and the bowls for libations, both those made of gold and those made of silver. 20 The copper from the two pillars, the pool, and the twelve copper bulls under the stands that King Solomon had made for the LORD’s Temple could not be weighed. 21 One pillar was twenty-seven feet high and eighteen feet in circumference. It was three inches thick and hollow. 22 And there was a crown of brass on it: the crown was five cubits high, circled with a network and apples all of brass; and the second pillar had the same. 23 There were ninety-six pomegranates on the sides. The total number of pomegranates on the surrounding filigree was one hundred. 24 And the captain of the guard took Serayah the chief priest, and Zephanyah the priest second in rank, and the three door-keepers; 25 From the city he also took an army commander, seven men who had access to the king whom he found in the city, the scribe who was in charge of the militia, and sixty common people whom he found in the city. 26 Nebuzaradan, the captain of the guard, brought them to the king of Babylon at Riblah. 27 And the king of Babylon put them to death at Riblah in the land of Hamath. So Judah was taken prisoner away from his land. 28 These are the people Nebuchadnezzar took into exile: in the seventh year, 3,023 Judeans; 29 in Nebuchadnezzar's eighteenth year, 832 people from Jerusalem; 30 in Nebuchadnezzar's twenty-third year, Nebuzaradan the captain of the bodyguard took 745 people from Judah into exile. All the people taken into exile numbered 4,600. 31 And it came to pass in the thirty-seventh year of the captivity of Jehoiachin king of Judah, in the twelfth month, in the twenty-fifth day of the month, that Evil-merodach king of Babylon, in the [first] year of his reign, lifted u 32 He spoke kindly to him, and set his throne above the throne of the kings who were with him in Babylon, 33 Jehoiachin changed his prison clothes and regularly dined with the king as long as he lived. 34 The king of Babylon gave him a daily food allowance as long as he lived.

Jeremiah 46:1-28

1 This is the word of the LORD that came to Jeremiah the prophet concerning the nations. 2 To Egypt against the army of Pharaoh-Necho, king of Egypt, that was upon the river Phrath in Carchemish, which Nebuchadnezzar king of Babel smote in the fourth year to Jehoiakim son of Josiah, king of Judah. 3 Prepare you the buckler and shield and draw near to battle. 4 Harness the horses and mount the steeds! And take your stand with helmets! Polish the spears! Put on the body armor! 5 "What do I see in them? They are terrified. They are retreating. Their warriors are defeated. They flee without looking back. Terror is all around them!" declares the LORD. 6 "The swift cannot flee, nor can the strong escape. In the north, beside the Euphrates River, they stumble and fall. 7 Who is this that rises like the Nile, like the rivers whose waters surge? 8 Egypt is rising like the Nile, like rivers whose waters surge. He says, 'I'll rise and cover the land. I'll destroy city and its inhabitants.' 9 Horses, get up! Chariots, drive furiously! Let the warriors go forward, Ethiopia and Put who carry shields, and the Lydians who handle and bend the bow. 10 That day belongs to the LORD of the Heavenly Armies. It is a day of vengeance to take vengeance on his foes. The sword will devour and be satisfied, and will drink its fill of their blood. For the Lord GOD of the Heavenly Armies will hold a sacrifice in the land of the north, by the Euphrates river. 11 Go up to Gilead and get balm, virgin daughter of Egypt! In vain you multiply remedies, but there is no healing for you. 12 The nations have heard of your shame. Your cry fills the earth. One warrior will stumble over another, and both will fall together. 13 The word that the LORD spoke to Jeremiah the prophet about the coming of Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon to attack the land of Egypt: 14 "Announce in Egypt, proclaim in Migdol. Proclaim also in Memphis and Tahpanhes. Say, 'Take your positions and be ready, for the sword will devour all around you.' 15 "Why should your soldiers be cut down? They cannot stand because the LORD will push them down. 16 They repeatedly stumble and fall. They say to each other, 'Get up! Let's go back to our people and to the land of our birth, away from the oppressor's sword.' 17 "There they will cry: 'Pharaoh, king of Egypt, is a big windbag. He has missed his chance.' 18 As surely as I live," declares the king, whose name is the LORD of the Heavenly Armies. Indeed, one will come like Tabor among the mountains and like Carmel by the sea. 19 Prepare your baggage for exile, daughter living in Egypt, for Memphis will become a desolate place. It will become a ruin without inhabitant. 20 Egypt is a very fair heifer; the gad-fly cometh, it cometh from the north. 21 "'Egypt's hired soldiers are like fattened calves. They will turn and run away together. They will not stand their ground. The day of destruction is coming. At that time they will be punished.' 22 Its sound is like a serpent's going, for they shall go in force, and come against her with axes, like woodcutters. 23 "'They will cut down the forest,' declares the LORD, 'since Egypt cannot be found. They are more numerous than locusts. They cannot be counted. 24 "'The people of Egypt will be put to shame. They will be handed over to the people from the north.' 25 the LORD Almighty, the God of Israel, said, "Look, I am going to punish Amon of Thebes, and Pharaoh, and Egypt, and her gods, and her kings, even Pharaoh and those who trust in him. 26 I'll give them to those who are seeking their lives and to King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon and his officers. Then afterwards, Egypt will be inhabited as in times past," declares the LORD. 27 But do not fear, O Jacob my servant, nor be dismayed, O Israel. For behold, I will save you from afar and your seed from the land of their captivity. And Jacob will return and will be quiet and at ease and none will make him afraid. 28 "'Do not be afraid, my servant Jacob," declares the LORD. "I am with you. I will completely destroy all the nations where I scattered you, but I will not completely destroy you. I will correct you with justice. I will not let you go entirely unpunished.'"

1 In the ninth year of Zedekiah king of Judah, in the tenth month, Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon and all his army came against Jerusalem, and besieged it. 2 On the ninth day of the fourth month of Zedekiah's eleventh year as king, the city walls were broken through. 3 And all the officials of the king of Babylon came and sat in the Middle Gate: Nergal-sharezer, Samgar-nebo, Sarsechim the chief officer, Nergal-sharezer the high official, with all the rest of the officials of the king of Babylon. 4 When Zedekiah king of Judah and all the soldiers saw them, they fled and went out of the city at night by way of the king's garden through the gate between the two walls. Then he went out on the road toward the Arabah. 5 But the Chaldean army pursued them and overtook Zedekiah in the plains of Jericho. And they took him, and made him go up to Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, to Riblah in the land of Hamath, where he gave judgment on him. 6 At Riblah, the king of Babylon executed Zedekiah's sons right before his eyes. He also executed all the nobles of Judah. 7 Then he put out Zedekiah's eyes and bound him with bronze fetters to take him to Babylon. 8 The Babylonians burned down the royal palace and the houses of the people and tore down the walls of Jerusalem. 9 Nebuzaradan, the captain of the Babylonian guard, took into exile in Babylon the rest of the people who remained in the city, those who had deserted to Nebuchadnezzar, and the rest of the people who remained. 10 Nebuzaradan the captain of the guard left in the land of Judah some of the poor people who did not have anything, and he gave them vineyards and fields on that day. 11 Now Nebuchadrezzar, king of Babylon, gave orders about Jeremiah to Nebuzaradan, the captain of the armed men, saying, 12 Go and find Jeremiah and take good care of him. Do not harm him, but do for him whatever he wants. 13 So Nebuzaradan, the captain of the guard, sent word, along with Nebushazban the chief officer, and Nergal-sharezer the high official, and all the chief officers of the king of Babylon. 14 they sent, and took Jeremiah out of the court of the guard, and committed him to Gedaliah the son of Ahikam, the son of Shaphan, that he should carry him home. So he lived among the people. 15 Now while Jeremiah lay yet bound in the fore entry of the prison, the word of the LORD came unto him, saying, 16 "Go and say to Ebed-melech the Cushite, saying, 'Thus says the LORD Almighty, the God of Israel: "Look, I am about to bring my words to pass against this city for evil and not for good. And they will be before you on that day. 17 But I'll deliver you on that day," declares the LORD. Fill it with choice bones. 5 "Take the choicest of the flock. Also pile wood under the pot. Make it boil vigorously. Also boil its bones in it."'" 6 Therefore thus says the Sovereign LORD: "Woe to the city of bloodguilt! A pot that has its rust in it; its rust did not go out from it. Bring it out piece by piece; one is as good as another. 7 ""Her blood is in her midst. She placed it on the bare rock. She did not pour it on the ground to cover it with dust. 8 That it may cause wrath to come up to take vengeance, I have set her blood on the bare rock, that it should not be covered.' 9 Therefore thus says the Sovereign LORD: Woe to the city of blood! I also will make the pile great. 10 ‘»Heap on the wood and kindle the fire. Boil the flesh well and mix in the spices and let the bones be burned. 11 '"Then set it empty on its coals so that it may be hot and its copper may glow and its filthiness may be melted in it. Let its rust be consumed. 12 Great pains have been taken, and the great rust thereof is not gone out, not even by fire. 13 In your uncleanness is obscene conduct, because I cleansed you, but you were not clean from your uncleanness; you will not be clean again until ⌊I fully vent my rage⌋ on you. 14 I the LORD have spoken. Ezekiel 3:14-18

14 So the Spirit lifted me up, and took me away; and I went in bitterness, in the anger of my spirit; and the hand of the LORD was strong on me. 15 And I went to the exiles at Tel Abib, who were dwelling near the Kebar River, and I sat where they were dwelling. I sat there seven days in the midst of them, stunned. 16 And at the end of seven days the word of the Lord came to me, saying: 17 Son of man, I have made you a watchman to the house of Israel: therefore hear the word at my mouth, and give them warning from me. 18 "When I tell a wicked man that he will surely die, but you do not warn him or speak out so that he can change his wicked way in order to save his life; that wicked man will die because of his sin. 4 'This is what the LORD God of Israel says: "I'm about to turn against you the weapons of war that are in your hands and with which you are fighting the king of Babylon and the Chaldeans who are besieging you outside the walls.

Jeremiah 22:4-30

4 "'If you do what I say, then the kings who sit on David's throne will ride through the gates of this palace in chariots and on horses along with their officials and their people."' 5 But if you don't listen to these words, I swear," declares the LORD, "that this house will become a ruin."'" 6 For this is what the LORD says about the house of the king of Judah, "You are like Gilead to me, like the summit of Lebanon. Yet I'll surely make you a desert, towns where no one lives. 7 And I will prepare destroyers against you, each one with his weapons. And they shall cut down your choice cedars, and throw them into the fire. 8 »Many nations will pass by this city. They will say to one another: Why has the LORD done thus to this great city? 9 Then shall it be answered: Because they have broken the covenant of the LORD their God, and have worshipped and served strange gods.'" 10 "Do not weep for the dead or mourn for him. Weep continually for the one who goes away. For he will never return or see his native land. 11 "'This is what the LORD says about King Josiah's son Shallum, who succeeded his father as king of Judah and left this place: 'He will never come back here again. 12 "'He will die in the place where they led him captive. He will not see this land again.' 13 Woe to him who builds his house by unrighteousness and his upper rooms without justice; his neighbor serves without pay, and he does not give him for his work; 14 who says, I will build myself a wide house and large upper rooms. And he cuts out windows for it and covers with cedar, and paints with vermilion. 15 Do you become a king because you are competing in cedar? Did not your father eat and drink and do justice and righteousness? Then it was well with him. 16 He pled the cause of the afflicted and needy. Then it was well. "Is that not what it means to know me?" Says the LORD. 17 But your eyes and your heart are not, Except on your dishonest gain, And on shedding of innocent blood, And on oppression, and on doing of violence." 18 Therefore the LORD tells us about Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, king of Judah: "They will not cry for him: 'Alas, my brother!' And, 'Alas, sister!' They will not mourn him: 'Alas for the master!' And, "Alas for his splendor!" 19 He will be buried with the burial of a donkey. He will be dragged away and thrown outside the gates of Jerusalem. 20 Go up to Lebanon and cry. And lift up your voice in Bashan, and cry out from Abarim; for all your lovers are destroyed. 21 I spoke to you when you were secure, but you said, "I won't listen!" This has been your way since your youth, for you haven't obeyed me. 22 The wind will shepherd all your shepherds, and your lovers will go into exile. Indeed, you will then be ashamed and humiliated because of all your wickedness. 23 You who live in Lebanon, who build your nest in the cedars, how you will groan when pains come upon you, pain like that of a woman giving birth. 24 "As surely as I live," declares the LORD, "even if Jehoiakim's son King Jehoiachin of Judah were a signet ring on my right hand, I would pull you off 25 "As I live," says the LORD, "I will hand you over to those who want to kill you, those you fear, King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon and the Babylonians. 26 I'll hurl you and the mother who gave birth to you into another land where you were not born, and there you will die. 27 As for the land to which you want to return, you won't return there! 28 "Is this man Jehoiachin a despised and shattered jar, a vessel no one wants? Why were he and his descendants hurled away, thrown into a land that they didn't know? 29 O land, land, land, hear the word of the LORD. 30 Thus says the LORD: "Record this man as childless, a man who will not succeed in his days, for no man from his offspring will succeed him, sitting on the throne of David and ruling again in Judah."

Jeremiah 26:12-15

12 Then Jeremiah said to all the officials and to all the people, saying, "the LORD sent me to prophesy against this house and against this city all the words that you have heard. 13 Now therefore amend your ways and your doings, and obey the LORD your God's voice; then the LORD will relent from the evil that he has pronounced against you. 14 Look, I'm in your hands, so do with me what you think is good and right. 15 Only know for certain that, if you put me to death, you will bring innocent blood on yourselves, and on this city, and on its inhabitants; for of a truth the LORD has sent me to you to speak all these words in your ears."

'I will bring that army back to this city to attack it, capture it, and burn it down. I will destroy the cities of Judah so that no one will live there.'"

Jeremiah 36:27-32

27 After the king burned up the scroll that Baruch had written and that Jeremiah had dictated, the LORD spoke his word to Jeremiah: 28 "Take again another scroll, and write on it all the former words that were in the first scroll, which Jehoiakim the king of Judah has burned. 29 "Say about King Jehoiakim of Judah: 'This is what the LORD says: You burned this scroll, and you asked Jeremiah: "Why did you write that the king of Babylon would certainly come to destroy this land and take away people and animals?"'" 30 Therefore, this is what the LORD says concerning Jehoiakim king of Judah, 'He will have no one to sit on the throne of David, and his corpse will be thrown out to rot during the heat of the day and the frost of the night. 31 I will punish him and his seed and his servants for their iniquity; and I will bring on them, and on the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and on the men of Judah, all the evil that I have pronounced against them, because they didn't listen. 32 Jeremiah took another scroll and gave it to the scribe Baruch, son of Neriah. As Jeremiah dictated, Baruch wrote on it everything that was on the scroll that King Jehoiakim of Judah had burned. They added many similar messages.

Jeremiah 15:10-21

10 How terrible for me, my mother, that you gave birth to me, a man of strife and contention for the whole land! I've neither lent nor borrowed, yet everyone curses me. 11 the LORD said: "I will certainly rescue you for a good. I will certainly make your enemies plead with you in times of evil and in times of distress. 12 Can anyone break iron, iron from the north, or bronze? 13 Your wealth and your treasures will I give as plunder without price, and that for all your sins, even in all your borders. 14 I'll make you serve your enemies in a land you don't know, for my anger has started a fire that will burn against you." 15 Thou knowest—O the LORD Remember me and visit me and avenge me upon my persecutors, Do not of thy longsuffering, take me away,—Know—I have borne for thy sake, reproach. 16 But to me your word is a joy, making my heart glad; for I am named by your name, O Lord God of armies. 17 I didn't sit in the assembly of those who make merry and rejoice. I sat alone because of your hand, for you have filled me with indignation. 18 Why is my pain unending and my wound incurable, refusing to be healed? You are like a deceptive brook, whose waters cannot be depended on. 19 Therefore the LORD says: "If you return I will restore you. You will stand before me. If you extract the precious from the worthless, you will become my spokesman. They for their part may turn to you. But you must not turn to them."

Jeremiah 20:1-6

1 Pashhur the priest, son of Immer, who was chief officer in the house of the LORD, heard Jeremiah prophesying these things. 2 Pashur struck Jeremiah the prophet and put him in the stocks that were at the upper Benjamin Gate of the temple. 3 The next day Pashur released Jeremiah from the stocks, and Jeremiah said to him, "The LORD has not named you Pashur, but rather Magor-missabib. 4 For the LORD says, 'Behold, I will make you a terror to yourself and to all your friends. They will fall by the sword of their enemies, and your eyes will see it. I will give all Judah into the hand of the king of Babylon, and he will carry them captive to Babylon, and will kill them with the sword. 5 I'll turn over all the wealth of this city, all its possessions, all its valuables, and all the treasures of the kings of Judah right into the hands of their enemies, and they'll plunder them, capture them, and take them to Babylon. 6 »‘You, Pashhur, and all who live in your house will go into captivity. You will enter Babylon, and there you will die and be buried, you and all your friends to whom you have falsely prophesied.’«

Jeremiah 29:25-32

25 'This is what the LORD Almighty, the God of Israel, says: "You sent letters in your own name to all the people who are in Jerusalem, to the priest Zephaniah, son of Maaseiah, and to all the priests. These letters said: 26 'the LORD made you priest instead of Jehoiada so that there would be officials for the LORD's temple. You should put every madman who acts like a prophet in prison and in shackles. 27 ‘Why have you not arrested Jeremiah from Anathoth? After all, he acts like a prophet among you. 28 So he sent a message to us in Babylon: 'The exile will be long, so build houses and live in them. Plant gardens and eat their produce.'"'" 29 Then Zephaniah the priest read this letter to Jeremiah the prophet, 30 and the word of the LORD came to Jeremiah: 31 "Send a message to all the exiles: 'This is what the LORD says about Shemaiah from Nehelam, "Because Shemaiah has prophesied to you, even though I didn't send him, and has made you trust a lie," 32 therefore the LORD says thus: Behold, I will punish Shemaiah the Nehelamite and his seed. He will not have a man to dwell among this people, nor will he behold the good that I will do to my people, says the LORD, because he has spoken rebellion against the LORD.

Jeremiah 38:6-13

6 So they took Jeremiah and threw him into the pit of Malchiah, the son of the king, which was in the courtyard of the guard. And they let Jeremiah down by ropes. Now in the pit there was no water, but only mud, and Jeremiah sank in the mud. 7 Ebed-melech the Ethiopian, a eunuch in the king's house, heard that Jeremiah had been put in the cistern. The king was sitting in the Benjamin Gate, 8 so Ebed-melech went out of the palace and spoke to the king: 9 "My lord the king, these men have done evil in all that they have done to Jeremiah the prophet, in that they have thrown him into the pit, and he will die there because of starvation, for there is no longer any bread in the city." 10 Then the king commanded Ebed-melech the Ethiopian saying,—Take with thee from hence thirty men, and lift Jeremiah the prophet out of the dungeon before he die. 11 So Ebed-melech took the men with him and went to the palace, underneath the storeroom. He took worn out rags and worn out clothes from there, and using ropes he lowered them down to Jeremiah in the cistern. 12 Ebedmelech the Ethiopian said to Jeremiah, Put now these rags and worn-out clothes under your armpits under the cords. Jeremiah did so. 13 And they pulled him up with the ropes, and lifted him out of the dungeon. And Jeremiah remained in the court of the prison.
