1 Now these are the descendants of Esau (that is, Edom).

Genesis 22:17

17 '"I will certainly bless you and make your descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky and the grains of sand on the seashore. Your descendants will take possession of their enemies' cities.

Genesis 25:24-34

24 And when the time came for her to give birth, there were two children in her body. 25 The first came out red all over, like a hairy garment. They named him Esau. 26 And after him, his brother came out, gripping Esau's foot; and he was named Jacob: Isaac was sixty years old when she gave birth to them. 27 The boys grew. Esau was a skillful hunter, a man of the field. Jacob was a quiet man, living in tents. 28 Isaac loved Esau because he did eat of his venison, but Rebekah loved Jacob. 29 One day while Jacob was cooking some stew, Esau came in from hunting. He was hungry. 30 He said to Jacob: »I am starving! Give me some of that red stuff.« (That is why he was named Edom.) 31 Jacob said, "First, sell me your birthright." 32 Esau said, "Look, I am about to die. What good is the birthright to me?" 33 Jacob said, "Swear to me first." He swore to him. He sold his birthright to Jacob. 34 Then Jacob gave Esau bread, and thick lentil stew, and he ate and drank. Then he got up and went away. So Esau despised his birthright.

Genesis 27:35-41

35 And he said, "Your brother came in deceit and took your blessing." 36 Then he said, "Isn't that why he is named Jacob? He has deceived me these two times. He took my birthright and, look, now he has taken my blessing!" Then he said, "Have you not reserved a blessing for me?" 37 And Isaac answered and said to Esau, If I have made him your master, and have made all his brethren his servants, and have strengthened him with grain and wine, what then shall I do for you, son? 38 And Esau said to his father, "Have you only one blessing, my father? Bless me also, my father!" And Esau lifted up his voice and wept. 39 And his father Isaac answered and said to him, Behold, your dwelling shall be from the fat of the earth and from the dew of the heavens above; 40 You will live by your sword, and you will serve your brother. It will happen, when you will break loose, that you will shake his yoke from off your neck.” 41 So Esau bore a grudge against Jacob because of the blessing with which his father had blessed him. Esau said to himself: "The days of mourning for my father are near. Then I will kill my brother Jacob."

Genesis 32:3-7

3 Jacob sent messengers ahead of him to his brother Esau in Seir, the country of Edom. 4 And he instructed them, saying, "Thus you must say to my lord, to Esau, 'Thus says your servant Jacob, I have dwelled as an alien with Laban, and I have remained there until now. 5 And I have oxen and donkeys, flocks and men-servants and maid-servants. And I have sent to tell my lord, that I may find favor in your sight. 6 And the messengers returned to Jacob and said, "We came to your brother, to Esau, and he is coming to meet you, and four hundred men are with him." 7 Then Jacob was greatly afraid, and distressed: and he divided the people that were with him, and the flocks, and herds, and camels, into two bands;

Numbers 20:14-21

14 Moses sent messengers from Kadesh to the king of Edom. He said: "This is what your brother Israel says: 'You know all the hardships we have had. 15 how our fathers went down into Egypt, and we lived in Egypt a long time. The Egyptians mistreated us and our fathers. 16 When we cried to the LORD, he heard our voice, sent an angel, and brought us out of Egypt. Behold, we are in Kadesh, a city in the edge of your border. 17 Please let us go through your land. We will not go through a field or vineyard, and we will not drink water from a well. We will go along the road of the king; we will not turn aside right or left until we have gone through your territory.'" 18 Then Edom said to him, "You will not pass through us lest we will go out to meet you with the sword." 19 The Israelites said to him, "We will go up on the main road, and if we and our livestock drink your water, we will pay for it. It is only a small matter; let us pass through on our feet." 20 And he said, You shall not pass through. And Edom came out against him with many people, and with a strong hand. 21 Thus Edom refused to give Israel passage through his territory; and Israel turned away from him.
