¹ And these are the names of the sons of Israel who came to Egypt; with Jacob, they each came with his family: ² Reuben, Simeon, Levi, and Judah, ³ Issachar, Zebulun, and Benjamin, ⁴ Dan and Naphtali, Gad and Asher. ⁵ All those who descended from Jacob totaled 75 persons. Now Joseph was already in Egypt. ⁶ And Yoseph and all his brothers and all that generation die: ⁷ And the Israelites were fruitful and multiplied and were many and were very, very numerous, and the land was filled with them. ⁸ A new king, who knew nothing about Joseph, began to rule in Egypt. ⁹ And he said to his people, "Look, the people of the Israelites are greater and more numerous than us. ¹⁰ Come on, let's be careful how we treat them, so that when they grow numerous, if a war breaks out they won't join our enemies, fight against us, and leave our land." ¹¹ So the Egyptians put slave masters over them in order to oppress them through forced labor. They built Pithom and Rameses as supply (storage) cities for Pharaoh. ¹² But the more they vexed them, the more they multiplied and grew: so that they abhorred the children of Israel. ¹³ They forced the Israelites to work hard as slaves. ¹⁴ and they made their lives bitter with hard labor, in mortar and in brick, and in all manner of labor in the field, all their labors which they ruthlessly made them do. ¹⁵ The king of Egypt spoke to the Hebrew midwives. Shiphrah and Puah were among them. ¹⁶ "When you help the Hebrew women give birth," he said, "watch them as they deliver. If it's a son, kill him; but if it's a daughter, let her live." ¹⁷ But the midwives feared God and did not do what the king of Egypt told them. Instead, they let the boys live. ¹⁸ And the king of Egypt summoned the midwives, and he said to them, "Why have you done this thing and let the boys live?" ¹⁹ The midwives said to Pharaoh, "Because the Hebrew women aren't like the Egyptian women; for they are vigorous, and give birth before the midwife comes to them." ²⁰ God was good to the midwives, and the people multiplied, and became very mighty. ²¹ And so because the midwives feared God, he gave them families. ²² Then Pharaoh commanded all his people: Every son who is born must be thrown into the Nile River. However, keep every daughter alive.

³¹ When the LORD saw that Leah was unloved he opened her womb, but Rachel was barren.

¹⁸ As her soul was departing (for she died), she named him Benoni, but his father named him Benjamin.

²³ The sons of Leah: Reuben (Jacob's firstborn), Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, and Zebulun. ²⁴ The sons of Rachel: Joseph and Benjamin. ²⁵ The sons of Rachel's slave Bilhah were Dan and Naphtali. ²⁶ The sons of Zilpah, the female servant of Leah: Gad and Asher. These were the sons of Jacob who were born to him in Paddan-Aram.

⁸ Now these are the names of the sons of Israel, who came into Egypt, Jacob and his sons. Reuben, the firstborn of Jacob ⁹ The sons of Reuben: Hanoch, Pallu, Hezron, and Carmi. ¹⁰ The sons of Simeon: Jemuel, Jamin, Ohad, Jakin, Zohar, and Shaul, the son of a Canaanite woman. ¹¹ The sons of Levi: Gershon, Kohath, and Merari. ¹² The sons of Judah: Er, Onan, Shelah, Perez, and Zerah; but Er and Onan died in the land of Canaan. The sons of Perez were Hezron and Hamul. ¹³ The sons of Issachar: Tola, Puah, Jashub, and Shimron. ¹⁴ The sons of Zebulun: Sered, Elon, and Jahleel. ¹⁵ These are the sons of Leah that she bore to Jacob in Paddan-Aram, and Dinah his daughter. His sons and daughters were thirty-three persons in all. ¹⁶ The sons of Gad: Ziphion, Haggi, Shuni, Ezbon, Eri, Arodi, and Areli. ¹⁷ The sons of Asher were Imnah, Ishvah, Ishvi, and Beriah. Their sister was Serah. The sons of Beriah were Heber and Malchiel. ¹⁸ These are the children of Zilpah, whom Laban gave to his daughter Leah, and Jacob had these sixteen children by her. ¹⁹ The sons of Jacob's wife Rachel: Joseph and Benjamin. ²⁰ In Egypt, Manasseh and Ephraim were born to Joseph by Asenath, daughter of Potiphera, priest from the city of On. ²¹ The sons of Benjamin: Bela, Beker, Ashbel, Gera, Naaman, Ehi, Rosh, Muppim, Huppim, and Ard. ²² These are the sons of Rachel who were born to Jacob—fourteen persons in all. ²³ The son of Dan: Hushim. ²⁴ The sons of Naphtali: Jahzeel, Guni, Jezer, and Shillem. ²⁵ These were the children of Bilhah, whom Laban gave to his daughter Rachel, seven persons. ²⁶ All the souls who came with Jacob into Egypt, who were his direct descendants, besides Jacob's sons' wives, all the souls were sixty-six.

³ "Reuben, you are my firstborn, my might, and the beginning of my strength; excelling in dignity, and excelling in power. ⁴ Unstable as water, you shall not excel; because you went up to your father's bed; then defiled you it: he went up to my couch. ⁵ "Simeon and Levi are brothers. Their swords are weapons of violence. ⁶ My soul, don't come into their council. My glory, don't be united to their assembly; for in their anger they killed men. In their self-will they hamstrung cattle. ⁷ Cursed be their anger, for it is fierce; and their wrath, for it is cruel: I will divide them in Jacob, and scatter them in Israel. ⁸ "Judah, your brothers will praise you. Your hand will be on the neck of your enemies. Your father's sons will bow down before you. ⁹ Judah is a lion's whelp. My son, you have risen up from the prey; he stoops, he crouches like a lion; and like a lioness, who can rouse him? ¹⁰ The scepter will not depart from Judah, nor the ruler's staff from between his feet, until he comes to whom it belongs. To him will the obedience of the peoples be. ¹¹ "He will tie his donkey to a grapevine, his colt to the best vine. He will wash his clothes in wine, his garments in the blood of grapes. ¹² "His eyes are darker than wine. His teeth are whiter than milk. ¹³ Zebulun shall live at the sea shore. And he shall be a haven for ships, and his border beside Sidon. ¹⁴ "Issachar is a strong donkey, lying down between the saddlebags. ¹⁵ "When he sees that his resting place is good and that the land is pleasant, he will bend his back to the burden and will become a slave laborer. ¹⁶ Dan will be the judge of his people, as one of the tribes of Israel. ¹⁷ Dan will be a serpent on the trail, an adder in the path, that bites the horse's heels, so that his rider falls backward. ¹⁸ I waited for thy deliverance, the LORD. ¹⁹ "Gad will be attacked by a band of raiders. He will strike back at their heels. ²⁰ "Asher's food will be rich. He will provide delicacies fit for a king. ²¹ "Naphtali is a doe set free, who bears beautiful fawns. ²² "Joseph is a fruitful vine, a fruitful vine by a spring. His branches run over the wall. ²³ The archers have fiercely attacked him, and shot at him, and hated him: ²⁴ »His bow stayed steady! His arms remained limber because of the help of the Mighty One of Jacob, because of the name of the Shepherd, the Rock of Israel, ²⁵ even by the God of your father, who will help you, by the Almighty, who will bless you, with blessings of heaven above, blessings of the deep that lies below, blessings of the breasts, and of the womb. ²⁶ »The blessings of your father are greater than the blessings of the oldest mountains and the riches of the ancient hills. May these blessings rest on the head of Joseph, on the crown of the prince among his brothers. ²⁷ “Benjamin is a ravenous wolf. In the morning he will devour the prey. At evening he will divide the plunder.”

¹⁴ These are the heads of their families. The sons of Reuben, the firstborn of Israel, are Enoch and Pallu, Hezron and Carmi. These are the clans of Reuben. ¹⁵ The sons of Simeon are Jemuel, Jamin, Ohad, Jachin, Zohar and Shaul, the son of the Canaanitess; these are the families of Simeon. ¹⁶ These are the names of Levi's sons according to their genealogies: Gershon, Kohath, and Merari. Levi lived 137 years.

¹ These were the sons of Israel: Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, Zebulun, ² Dan, Joseph, Benjamin, Naphtali, Gad, and Asher.

²³ These are the numbers of the chiefs of the armed men, ready for war, who came to David at Hebron, to give the kingdom of Saul into his hands, as the Lord had said. ²⁴ The sons of Judah bearing shield and spear: six thousand eight hundred armed troops. ²⁵ the elite warriors of Simeon numbered 7,100, ²⁶ and the Levites numbered 4,600. ²⁷ Jehoiada, a senior officer in the house of Aaron, brought with him 3,700. ²⁸ and Zadok, a valiant young man, and his father`s house two and twenty chief men. ²⁹ The tribe of Benjamin, relatives of Saul numbered 3,000, of whom most had remained allied to what remained of Saul's dynasty. ³⁰ From the tribe of Ephraim, there were twenty thousand eight hundred warriors, each famous in his own clan. ³¹ And from the half-tribe of Manasseh, eighteen thousand, listed by name, came to make David king. ³² And of the sons of Issachar, having understanding for the times, to know what Israel should do; their heads [are] two hundred, and all their brethren [are] at their command. ³³ The tribe of Zebulun supplied 50,000 experienced troops, trained in the use of every kind of war weapon, in order to help David with undivided loyalty. ³⁴ And of Naphtali, a thousand captains with thirty-seven thousand spearmen. ³⁵ The tribe of Dan supplied 28,600 battle-ready troops. ³⁶ And of Asher ones going forth to help in war—forty thousand. ³⁷ And from the country beyond the Jordan, from Reuben, and the Gadites, and from the half-tribe of Manasseh, a hundred and twenty thousand, with all weapons of war. ³⁸ All these being men of war, who could order the battle array, came with a perfect heart to Hebron, to make David king over all Israel. All the rest of Israel were also of one heart to make David king. ³⁹ They were there with David three days, eating and drinking; for their brothers had supplied provisions for them. ⁴⁰ Their neighbors came from as far away as the territories of Issachar, Zebulun, and Naphtali, bringing provisions loaded on donkeys, camels, mules, and oxen. They brought abundant provisions of meal, fig bars, raisins, wine, oil, oxen, and sheep, because there was joy in Israel.

¹⁶ And over the tribes of Israel: for the Reubenites, the leader, Eliezer son of Zichri: for the Simeonites Shephatiah son of Maacah ¹⁷ Of Levi, Hashabiah, son of Kemuel. Of Aaron, Zadok. ¹⁸ Over Juda, Eliu the brother of David over Issachar, Amri the son of Michael: ¹⁹ of Zebulun, Ishmaiah son of Obadiah; of Naphtali, Jerimoth son of Azriel; ²⁰ for the tribe of Ephraim, Hoshea, son of Azaziah for half of the tribe of Manasseh, Joel, son of Pedaiah ²¹ For the half-tribe of Manasseh in Gilead: Iddo the son of Zechariah. For Benjamin: Jaasiel son of Abner. ²² Of Dan, Azarel, son of Jeroham. These, were the rulers of the tribes of Israel.

⁴ And I heard the number of those who were sealed, one hundred forty-four thousand from all the tribes of Israel: ⁵ Of the tribe of Judah, 12,000 were sealed; Of the tribe of Reuben, 12,000; Of the tribe of Gad, 12,000; ⁶ Of the tribe of Asher, 12,000; Of the tribe of Naphtali, 12,000; Of the tribe of Manasseh, 12,000; ⁷ 12,000 from the tribe of Simeon, 12,000 from the tribe of Levi, 12,000 from the tribe of Issachar, ⁸ Of the tribe of Zebulun, 12,000; Of the tribe of Joseph, 12,000; Of the tribe of Benjamin, 12,000.

²² While Israel lived in that region, Reuben went to bed with his father's concubine Bilhah. Israel heard about it. Jacob had twelve sons. ²³ The sons of Leah: Reuben (Jacob's firstborn), Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, and Zebulun.

²⁰ and the fourth row a chrysolite, an onyx, and a jasper. They shall be enclosed in gold in their settings.

²⁶ All the souls who came with Jacob into Egypt, who were his direct descendants, besides Jacob's sons' wives, all the souls were sixty-six. ²⁷ And the sons of Joseph which were born to him in Egypt, two souls: to the house of Jacob coming to Egypt, seventy.

²⁰ God was good to the midwives, and the people multiplied, and became very mighty.

²² Your ancestors went down to Egypt with seventy people, but the LORD your God has now made you as numerous as the stars in the sky."

³⁰ Gideon had seventy sons conceived from his body, for he had many wives.

²⁴ And Joseph said to his brothers, "I am about to die, but God will certainly visit you and bring you up from this land to the land that he swore to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob."

²⁶ So Joseph died, being one hundred and ten years old. They embalmed him and he was placed in a coffin in Egypt.

¹⁴ Then Joseph sent for his father Jacob, and for all his family, seventy-five in all. ¹⁵ So Jacob went down to Egypt, where he and our fathers died. ¹⁶ Their bones were carried back to Shechem and placed in the tomb that Abraham had bought from the sons of Hamor at Shechem for a price he paid in silver.

²⁰ God said, “Let the waters abound with living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth in the open expanse of the sky.”

²⁸ God blessed them and said to them: "Be fruitful and increase in number. Fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish of the sea and dominate the birds of the air. Have dominion over every living creature that moves on the ground."

¹ God blessed Noah and his sons. He said: "Be fruitful and increase in number and fill the earth.

² "I will make you into a great nation. I will bless you. I will make your name great. You will be a blessing.

¹⁶ "I will make your offspring like the dust of the earth. If anyone could count the dust, your offspring could be counted.

⁵ And he brought him outside and said, "Look toward the heavens and count the stars if you are able to count them." And he said to him, "So shall your offspring be."

⁴ »This is my covenant with you: You will be the father of many nations. ⁵ And your name shall no longer be called Abram, but your name shall be Abraham, for I have made you a father of many nations. ⁶ "I will make you very fruitful. I will make nations of you, and kings will come from you.

¹⁶ "I will bless her and will surely give you a son by her. I will bless her so that she will be the mother of nations. Kings of peoples will come from her."

¹⁷ '"I will certainly bless you and make your descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky and the grains of sand on the seashore. Your descendants will take possession of their enemies' cities.

⁴ I will multiply your offspring as the stars of the sky, and will give all these lands to your offspring. In your offspring all the nations of the earth will be blessed,

³ May God Almighty bless you, and make you fruitful, and multiply you, that you may be a company of peoples, ⁴ "He will bless you and your descendants as he blessed Abraham. You may take possession of this land, in which you have lived and which God gave to Abraham!"

¹⁴ "Your descendants will be like the dust on the earth. You will spread out to the west and to the east, to the north and to the south. Every family on earth will be blessed through you and through your descendants.

¹¹ God said to him, I am God Almighty: be fruitful and multiply. A nation and a company of nations will be from you, and kings will come out of your body.

³ Then he said, "I am the God of your father. Do not be afraid to go down to Egypt, for I will make you a great nation there.

²⁷ The Israelites lived in Egypt in the region of Goshen. They became rich and had many children.

⁴ and said to me, Behold, I will make you fruitful and will multiply you, and will make you a multitude of peoples. And I will give this land to your seed after you as a continual possession.

¹⁶ the Angel who delivered me from all evils, bless these children! And let them be called by my name and by the name of my fathers Abraham and Isaak; and may they be increased to a great multitude on the earth!

³⁷ The Israelites left Rameses to go to Succoth. There were about six hundred thousand men on foot, plus all the women and children.

⁵ And you shall speak and say before the LORD your God, My father was a perishing Aramean! And he went down to Egypt with few men, and lived there, and became a nation there, great, mighty and many.

²³ You made their children numerous like the stars of the heavens and brought them to the land that you told their ancestors to enter in order to take possession.

²⁴ And he made his people very fruitful. He also made them stronger than their enemies.

¹⁷ As the time drew near for God to fulfill His promise to Abraham, our people in Egypt increased greatly in number. ¹⁸ until another king, who knew nothing about Joseph, became ruler of Egypt.

¹⁸ I hated all the work I had done under the sun, because I would leave it behind for the man who comes after me. ¹⁹ And who knows whether he will be a wise man or a fool? Yet he will have rule over all my labor in which I have labored, and in which I have shown myself wise under the sun. This also is vanity.

¹⁵ but there was found therein, a man, poor [but] wise, and, he, delivered the city by his wisdom,—yet, no one, remembered that poor man.

¹⁸ until another king, who knew nothing about Joseph, became ruler of Egypt.

⁴ And Moab said to the elders of Midian, Now this assembly is licking up all that is around us, as the ox licks up the grass of the field. And Balak the son of Zippor was king of Moab at that time. ⁵ And he sent messengers to Balaam the son of Beor, to Pethor which is beside the River of the land of the sons of his people, to call for him, saying, Behold! A people has come out of Egypt. Behold! it has covered the face of the earth, and it is setting next to me.

² For vexation kills the fool, and envy slays the simple one.

²⁴ And he made his people very fruitful. He also made them stronger than their enemies. ²⁵ He turned their heart to hate his people, to conspire against his servants.

²⁸ A large population is a king's glory, but a shortage of people is a ruler's ruin.

⁴ Fury is cruel, and anger overwhelming, Yet who can stand before jealousy?

⁴ And I saw all labor, and all the diligent work, that this is a man's envy from his neighbor. This also is vanity and grasping for the wind.

³ For at one time we too were foolish, disobedient, misled, enslaved to all sorts of desires and pleasures, living in malice and envy, hateful, and hating one another.

¹⁴ But if you have bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast in it or deny the truth. ¹⁵ Such wisdom does not come from above, but is earthly, unspiritual, demonic. ¹⁶ For where there is jealousy and selfish ambition, there is disorder and every evil practice.

⁵ Or do you think the Scripture says without reason that the Spirit He caused to dwell in us yearns with envy?

⁶ Now, please go, curse this people for me because they are stronger than me; perhaps I will be able to strike them and drive them out from the land because I know whoever you bless is blessed, and whoever you cursed is cursed."

¹³ He is capturing the wise in their craftiness, and the schemes of the wily are rushed.

² In arrogance, the wicked hunt down the weak. They are caught in the schemes that they devise.

³ They conspire with cunning against your people. They plot against your cherished ones. ⁴ “Come,” they say, “let’s destroy them as a nation, that the name of Israel may be remembered no more.”

²⁵ He turned their heart to hate his people, to conspire against his servants.

¹¹ If they say: 'Come with us, let us lie in wait for blood, let us lurk for the innocent without cause;

²⁵ There is a way which seems right to a man, but in the end it leads to death.

³⁰ There is no wisdom nor understanding nor counsel against the LORD.

¹⁹ "He dealt craftily with our race, and oppressed our forefathers, by making them expose their infants so that they should not live.

¹² When daylight came, the Jews formed a conspiracy and bound themselves with an oath not to eat or drink until they had killed Paul.

¹⁸ Let no one deceive himself. If any of you thinks he is wise in this age, he should become a fool, so that he may become wise. ¹⁹ For the wisdom of this world is foolishness in God’s sight. As it is written: “He catches the wise in their craftiness.” ²⁰ And again, “The Lord knows that the thoughts of the wise are futile.”

¹⁵ Such wisdom does not come from above, but is earthly, unspiritual, demonic. ¹⁶ For where there is jealousy and selfish ambition, there is disorder and every evil practice. ¹⁷ But the wisdom from above is first of all pure, then peaceable, gentle, accommodating, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial, and sincere. ¹⁸ Peacemakers who sow in peace reap the fruit of righteousness.

¹³ And he said to Abram, "Know for sure that your descendants will live as foreigners in a land that is not theirs; and they will serve them. And they will oppress them four hundred years.

¹¹ Joseph settled his father and his brothers in Egypt. He gave them property in the best of the land near the city of Rameses. This was as the king had commanded.

¹¹ Years later, after Moses had grown up, he went out to his own people, and took notice of their heavy burdens. He saw an Egyptian beating up a Hebrew, one of his own people.

⁷ The LORD said, "I have surely seen the affliction of my people who are in Egypt, and have heard their cry because of their taskmasters, for I know their sorrows.

⁴ The king of Egypt replied to them, "Moses and Aaron, why are you keeping the people from their labor? Go back to your work!" ⁵ Then Pharaoh said, "Look, the people in the land are now numerous, and you are stopping them from working." ⁶ Pharaoh gave these orders to the slave drivers and foremen:

¹⁵ The Israelite supervisors came and cried out to Pharaoh, "Why are you doing this to us?

⁶ Therefore say to the Israelites, 'I am the LORD, and I will bring you out from under the forced labor of Egypt, and I will deliver you from their slavery, and I will redeem you with an outstretched arm and with great punishments. ⁷ I'll take you for my own people, and I'll be your God. Then you will know that I am the LORD your God who brings you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians.

¹⁵ how our fathers went down into Egypt, and we lived in Egypt a long time. The Egyptians mistreated us and our fathers.

⁶ But the Egyptians oppressed us, afflicted us, and assigned us to hard labor.

¹⁹ and all the store cities that Solomon had, and cities for his chariots, and cities for his horsemen and all that his lust was to build in Jerusalem and Lebanon and in all the land of his kingdom.

⁴ And he built Tadmor in the wilderness, and all the store cities that he built in Hamath.

¹³ while you sleep among the campfires, the wings of a dove sheathed with silver, her feathers with shining gold.

⁶ I removed his shoulder from the burden: his hands were freed from the basket.

¹³ they wandered from nation to nation, from one kingdom to another.

⁹ And he said to his people, "Look, the people of the Israelites are greater and more numerous than us.

¹⁹ Then the Pharisees said to one another, “You can see that this is doing you no good. Look how the whole world has gone after Him!”

² being greatly disturbed because they were teaching the people and proclaiming in Jesus the resurrection of the dead. ³ They seized Peter and John, and because it was already evening, they put them in custody until the next day. ⁴ But many who heard the message believed, and the number of men grew to about five thousand.

²⁸ “We gave you strict orders not to teach in this name,” he said. “Yet you have filled Jerusalem with your teaching and are determined to make us responsible for this man’s blood.” ²⁹ Peter and the other Apostles replied, "We must obey God rather than man. ³⁰ The God of our fathers raised Jesuswhom you had killed by hanging him on a tree. ³¹ God exalted him to his own right hand as Prince and Savior, to give repentance and forgiveness of sins to Israel. ³² We are witnesses of these things, and so is the Holy Spirit, whom God has given to those who obey him." ³³ When they heard this, they were furious, and wanted to kill them.

²⁸ And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who are called according to his purpose.

⁶ For the Lord disciplines the one he loves, and he punishes every son he accepts." ⁷ Endure suffering as discipline; God is treating you as sons. For what son is not disciplined by his father? ⁸ If you do not experience discipline like everyone else, then you are illegitimate children and not true sons. ⁹ Furthermore, we have all had earthly fathers who disciplined us, and we respected them. Should we not much more submit to the Father of our spirits and live? ¹⁰ Our fathers disciplined us for a short time as they thought best, but God disciplines us for our good, so that we may share in His holiness. ¹¹ No discipline seems enjoyable at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it yields a peaceful harvest of righteousness to those who have been trained by it.

²⁰ For the LORD took you and brought you out of the iron-smelting furnace out of Egypt to be the people of his inheritance, as you are today.

¹³ They forced the Israelites to work hard as slaves.

²³ And then during those many days, the king of Egypt died, and the Israelites groaned because of the work, and they cried out, and their cry for help because of the work went up to God.

⁷ "You're no longer to give the people straw for making bricks, as in the past. They must gather straw for themselves. ⁸ But see that they make the same number of bricks as before, and no less: for they have no love for work; and so they are crying out and saying, Let us go and make an offering to our God. ⁹ "Make the work harder for these people so that they will be too busy to listen to lies." ¹⁰ The slave drivers and the Israelite foremen went out and said to the Israelites: "The king has said that he will not supply you with any more straw. ¹¹ Go get straw for yourselves wherever you can find it, but your work quotas won't be reduced at all.'" ¹² And the people is scattered over all the land of Egypt, to gather stubble for straw, ¹³ The taskmasters kept pressing them, saying, "Fulfill your work quota, your daily amount, as when there was straw." ¹⁴ The officers of the children of Israel, whom Pharaoh's taskmasters had set over them, were beaten, and were asked, “Why haven't you fulfilled your quota both yesterday and today, in making brick as before?” ¹⁵ The Israelite supervisors came and cried out to Pharaoh, "Why are you doing this to us? ¹⁶ No straw is given to your servants, and they tell us, 'Make brick.' and look, your servants are beaten; but the fault is in your own people." ¹⁷ Then Pharaoh said, "You are lazy, lazy! That's why you're saying, 'Let's go offer sacrifices to the LORD.' ¹⁸ "Get back to work! You will not be given straw, but you must still make the same number of bricks." ¹⁹ The Israelite foremen realized they were in trouble when they were told: "Do not make fewer bricks each day than you are supposed to." ²⁰ Leaving the Pharaoh, they found Moses and Aaron waiting for them. ²¹ and they said unto them, The LORD look upon you and judge because ye have made our savour to be a stench before Pharaoh and his slaves, putting a sword in their hands to slay us.

⁹ And Moses spoke thus to the Israelites, but they did not listen to Moses, because of discouragement and because of hard work.

² "I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage.

⁴³ "'Do not treat them harshly. Respect your God.

⁴⁶ "'You may leave them as an inheritance to your children, whom they must serve as long as they live. But you must not treat any Israelites harshly.

⁵³ He shall be with him as a servant hired year by year. He shall not rule with rigor over him in thy sight.

²⁰ She said: "Do not call me Naomi (meaning pleasant). Call me Mara, because the Almighty has made my life bitter.

⁶ He whose rod was on the peoples with an unending wrath, ruling the nations in passion, with an uncontrolled rule.

²³ "I will put it into the hands of your tormentors, who said to you: 'Lie down that we may walk all over you. You made your back like the ground like a street to be walked over."'

⁵ "What do I have here?" Declares the LORD. "For my people have been taken away for nothing. Those who rule them mock," declares the LORD. "And all day long my name is constantly blasphemed.

⁶ Is not this the fast that I have chosen? to loose the bonds of wickedness, to undo the bands of the yoke, and to let the oppressed go free, and that ye break every yoke

³³ Thus says the LORD Almighty: "The people of Israel are oppressed, and the people of Judah likewise, for all their captors have seized them, they refuse to let them go free. ³⁴ Their Redeemer is strong; the LORD Almighty, is His name. He shall thoroughly plead their cause, so that he may give rest to the land, and give trouble to the people of Babylon.

³ Who eat the flesh of my people? They strip their skin and they break their bones; and spread them as for the caldron and as flesh within the caldron.

¹⁴ Draw water for the siege. Strengthen your fortresses. Go into the clay, and tread the mortar. Make the brick kiln strong.

³⁴ I have indeed seen the oppression of My people in Egypt. I have heard their groaning and have come down to deliver them. Now come, I will send you back to Egypt.’

²² Then Pharaoh commanded all his people: Every son who is born must be thrown into the Nile River. However, keep every daughter alive.

³⁸ But when the tenants saw the son, they said to themselves, ‘This is the heir; come, let us kill him, and take his inheritance!’

⁴ And his tail swept away a third of the stars of heaven, and threw them to the earth. And the dragon stood before the woman who was about to give birth, so that he might devour her child when it was born.

¹¹ And Abraham will say, For I said, Surely there is not the fear of God in this place; and they will kill me because of my wife.

¹⁸ On the third day Joseph said to them, "Do this and you will live; I fear God.

²¹ And so because the midwives feared God, he gave them families.

¹⁵ But the former governors that were before me laid burdens upon the people, and took of them for bread and wine above forty shekels of silver; yea, even their servants lorded over the people; but so did not I, because of the fear of God.

¹⁹ Oh how great is your goodness, which you have stored up for those who fear you, which you have worked for those who take refuge in you, before the sons of men.

¹³ The fear of the LORD is to hate evil. I hate: pride and arrogance and the evil way and the perverse mouth.

⁶ Through kindness and truth is iniquity atoned for; and by the fear of the Lord men depart from evil.

¹¹ Rescue those who are being led away to death, and save those who stumble toward slaughter. ¹² if you say, "Look, we do not know this," does not he who weighs hearts perceive it? And he who keeps your soul, he knows and will repay humankind according to his deeds.

¹² Though a sinner commits crimes a hundred times, and lives long, yet surely I know that it will be better with those who fear God, who are reverent before him.

¹³ Now that all has been heard, here is the final conclusion: Fear God and obey his commandments, for this is the whole duty of man.

¹⁶ Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego answered the king, “Nebuchadnezzar, we have no need to answer you in this matter. ¹⁷ "If it is so, our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the blazing furnace. He will deliver us out of your hand, O king. ¹⁸ But if not, let it be known to you, O king, that we will not serve your gods or worship the golden image which you have set up.”

¹³ Then they said to the king, "Daniel, who is one of the Judean exiles, pays no attention to you, your majesty, or to the written decree, since he is still praying three times a day."

¹¹ Ephraim is crushed, broken by judgment, because he willingly pursued idols.

¹⁶ For you have observed the regulations of Omri and all the works of the house of Ahab. And you have walked in their counsels, so that I am making you a desolation and your inhabitants an object of scorn. So you will bear the scorn of my people.

²⁸ Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Instead, fear the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell.

⁵ But I will show you whom you should fear: Fear the One who, after you have been killed, has power to throw you into hell. Yes, I tell you, fear Him!

¹⁸ Then they called them in again and commanded them not to speak or teach at all in the name of Jesus. ¹⁹ But Peter and John replied, “Judge for yourselves whether it is right in God’s sight to listen to you rather than God. ²⁰ For we cannot stop speaking about what we have seen and heard.”

²⁹ Peter and the other Apostles replied, "We must obey God rather than man.

²⁸ Absalom commanded his servants saying, Mark now, when Amnon's heart is merry with wine; and when I tell you, 'Strike Amnon', then kill him. Don't be afraid. Haven't I commanded you? Be courageous, and be valiant!

⁴ for the king's word is supreme. Who can say to him, "What are you doing?"

⁴ But the woman took the two men and hid them. And she said, "Yes, the men came to me, but I did not know where they were from. ⁵ At dusk, when it was time to close the city gates, the men left. I don't know where the men went. Go after them quickly, and you might overtake them." ⁶ But she had brought them up to the roof, and hidden them under the stalks of flax which she had laid in order on the roof. ⁷ Now they that were sent, pursued after them, by the way that leadeth to the fords of the Jordan: and as soon as they were gone out, the gate was presently shut. ⁸ Before the scouts had lain down, she went up to them on the roof ⁹ and said to the men, "I know that the LORD has given you the land, and that dread of you has fallen on us, and that all the inhabitants of the land melt away in fear because of your presence. ¹⁰ For we have heard how the LORD dried up the water of the reed sea before you, when you came out of Egypt, and what you did unto the two kings of the Amorites on the other side Jordan; Sihon, and Og, which ye utterly destroyed. ¹¹ When we heard these reports, we all became terrified and discouraged because of you, for the LORD your God is God in heaven above and on the earth beneath. ¹² Now therefore, I pray you, swear to me by the LORD, since I have showed you kindness, that you will also show kindness to my father's house, and give me a true token: ¹³ and you will spare my father and mother, my brothers and sisters, and all that belongs to them; you will deliver our lives from death." ¹⁴ And the men said to her, "Our lives for yours. If you do not report this business of ours, we will show you loyalty and faithfulness when the LORD gives us the land." ¹⁵ Then she let them down by a rope through the window, for her house was in the side of the wall, and she lived in the wall. ¹⁶ And she said to them, "Go to the mountain, so that the pursuers will not find you, and hide yourselves there three days until the pursuers return, and afterward you may go on your way." ¹⁷ The men said to her: »We will be free from this oath you made us swear. ¹⁸ When we come to the land, you must tie this scarlet cord in the window through which you let us down, and you must gather your father and mother, and your brothers, and your whole family to your house. ¹⁹ Then if anyone goes out of your house into the street, his blood will be on his head, we will not be responsible; but if any damage comes to anyone in the house, his blood will be on our heads. ²⁰ »if you tell what we are doing we will be released from the oath you made us swear.« ²¹ She said, “Let it be as you have said.” She sent them away, and they departed. Then she tied the scarlet line in the window. ²² And they came to the hill-country, and remained there three days; and the pursuers searched all the roads, and found them not. ²³ The two men returned and went down from the mountain, and they crossed over and came to Joshua son of Nun, and they told him everything that happened to them. ²⁴ And they said to Joshua, The Lord has delivered all the land into our power, and all the inhabitants of that land tremble because of us.

² David said to Ahimelech the priest, The king has charged me with a task and has said to me 'Let no-one know anything about it or what I have commanded you'. I have told the young men to go to a meeting place.

¹⁹ The man's wife took a covering and spread it over the opening of the cistern. She scattered grain over it so that no one would notice anything. ²⁰ When the servants of Absalom came to the woman at the house, they said, "Where are Ahimaaz and Jonathan?" And she said to them, "They crossed over the brook of water." So they searched but could not find them, so they returned to Jerusalem.

⁷ And the Israelites were fruitful and multiplied and were many and were very, very numerous, and the land was filled with them.

¹² But the more they vexed them, the more they multiplied and grew: so that they abhorred the children of Israel.

¹ To the Chief Musician. A Psalm of David. Blessed is he who acts wisely toward the poor; the LORD will deliver him in time of trouble. ² The LORD will protect him and keep him alive; he will be blessed in the land; and he will not be handed over to the desires of his enemies.

⁵ For you, God, have heard my vows. You have given me the heritage of those who fear your name.

⁹ Surely his salvation is near those who fear him, that glory may dwell in our land.

¹¹ For as the heavens are high above the earth, so great is His grace toward those who fear Him.

⁵ He gives food to those who fear him; he remembers his covenant forever.

¹⁹ He fulfilleth the desire of them that fear him; he heareth their cry, and saveth them.

¹⁸ A wicked man earns deceitful wages, but he who sows righteousness [has] a sure reward.

¹⁷ He who has pity on the poor lends to the LORD, and He will reward his dealing to him.

¹⁰ Say you to the righteous, that it shall be well with him: for they shall eat the fruit of their deeds.

⁴² And if anyone gives even a cup of cold water to one of these little ones because he is My disciple, truly I tell you, he will never lose his reward.”

⁴⁰ And the King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of Mine, you did for Me.’

⁵⁰ His mercy extends to those who fear Him, from generation to generation.

¹⁰ God is not unjust. He will not forget your work and the love you have shown for His name as you have ministered to the saints and continue to do so.

³⁵ I will raise up for Myself a faithful priest who will do according to what is in My heart and My mind. I will build him a sure house, and he shall minister before My anointed one forever.

²⁸ Please forgive the offense of your servant. For the LORD will certainly make a strong dynasty for your majesty, for your majesty is fighting the LORD's battles. May evil not be found in you for all of your life.

¹¹ In the manner that I appointed judges over my people Israel, I will give you rest from all your enemies. And the LORD declares to you that the LORD will build a house for you. ¹² When your days are full and you lie down with your ancestors, I will raise up your offspring after you who will go out from your body, and I will establish his kingdom. ¹³ It is he who shall build a house for my name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom for ever.

²⁷ For You, O LORD Almighty, God of Israel, have revealed to Your servant, saying, I will build you a house. Therefore Your servant has found in his heart to pray this prayer to You. ²⁸ Now, O Sovereign LORD, You are God, and Your words are truth, and You have promised this good thing to Your servant. ²⁹ Now therefore let it please you to bless the house of your servant, that it may continue everlasting before you, for you, O Sovereign LORD, have spoken it. And with your blessing let the house of your servant be blessed forever.

²⁴ And now [as] the LORD liveth, who has established me, and set me on the throne of David my father, and who has made me a house, as he promised, Adonijah shall be put to death this day.

³⁸ And it will be, if you will listen to all that I command you and will walk in my ways and do what is right in my eyes, to keep my statutes and my commandments, as David my servant did. That I will be with you and will build you a sure house as I built for David and will give Israel to you.

³ Trust in the LORD, and do good. Dwell in the land, and enjoy safe pasture.

¹ A Song of Ascents. By Solomon. Unless the LORD builds the house, they who build it labor in vain. Unless the LORD watches over the city, the watchman guards it in vain.

³ Children are an inheritance from the LORD. They are a blessing from him.

³ By wisdom a house is built; and by understanding it is established.

² Go to the family of Archabin and thou shalt bring them to the house of the Lord, into one of the courts, and give them wine to drink.

¹ Two years later Pharaoh had a dream. He dreamed he was standing by the Nile River.

¹⁶ "When you help the Hebrew women give birth," he said, "watch them as they deliver. If it's a son, kill him; but if it's a daughter, let her live."

¹⁹ the LORD then spoke to Moses: "Tell Aaron, Take your staff and stretch out your hand over the waters of Egypt; its rivers, canals, ponds, and all its reservoirs. They will turn into blood. There will be blood everywhere in Egypt, even in the buckets of wood and stone pitchers." ²⁰ Moses and Aaron did as the LORD commanded. Aaron raised his staff and struck the Nile in front of Pharaoh and his officials. All the water in the river turned into blood. ²¹ The fish in the Nile died. The river smelled bad. The Egyptians could not drink any water from the river. There was blood everywhere in Egypt.

¹⁶ for their feet run to evil. They hurry to shed blood.

¹⁶ For they do not sleep, unless they do evil. Their sleep is taken away, unless they make someone fall.

⁴ The third angel poured out his bowl upon the rivers and the springs of water, and they became blood. ⁵ Then I heard the angel in charge of the water say, "You are just. You are the one who is and who was, the Holy One, because you have judged these things. ⁶ for they shed the blood of your people and prophets, and you have given them blood to drink, as they deserve."
